Abstract:This article examines how Robert Park’s work, first at the American Congo Reform Association (ACRA) as a secretary/publicity agent and later at Tuskegee Institute as Booker T Washington’s researcher, ghostwriter, and co-author, influenced how he conceptualized what academic sociology could do and should be. Once he secured an academic position at the University of Chicago, Park, like many of his peers, sought to establish his difference from and superiority over practical reformers by defining his object of study – society – as a ‘social organism’ which was governed by natural laws. Park’s definition of sociology and its object of study made it possible not only to exclude non-academic researchers from the discipline but also to place his own actions as a ‘reformer’ (i.e. imperial consultant at Tuskegee and the ACRA) beyond scholarly inquiry. Park’s relationship to Washington helps to explain the relationship between sociology’s separation from the reform movement and the erasure of colonialism and imperialism from disciplinary history. It also partially accounts for why contemporary sociology’s analytical structure still struggles to account for and theoretically capture the complexities of colonial history.

Abstract:The technological innovations developed in Africa have an important place in the history of invention and date back to the ancient world. Africans had a knowledge of astronomy, agricultural science, engineering, and medicine based on natural plant products. Although this knowledge was often more developed in Africa than anywhere else in the world, African contributions were mostly ignored by the rest of the world. Many contributions of Blacks to modern technology are still not widely known. In 1913 alone, more than a thousand inventions were patented by African Americans who were fortunate enough to be accepted at the patent office. Many other black inventors discovered medicines as well as laborsaving devices, but were not allowed to patent them in their own names; others who controlled their labor stole credit, authorship, and profit for their discoveries. In this article, we hope to inspire young people of all colors by telling the stories of black scientists who developed products, medicines, and systems that changed lives. All scientists presented here were born before the 20th century, when Blacks were up against severe forms of oppression and inhumanity. Black people faced unparalleled obstacles in accessing both primary and higher education, and the few educational facilities that were available to Blacks were inadequate compared to those available to whites. Additionally, black people could not obtain housing or jobs, and they were not recognized or included as members of society. Despite these challenges, some of the greatest scientific discoveries were made by black people. The black scientists highlighted here did not have equal access to education during their lifetime, and it was only through perseverance that they were able to overcome obstacles and earn educational degrees. We highlight the scientific discoveries made by some of the most brilliant black scientists during this era, depicting how racist laws and practices affected them, and we discuss them chronologically by their date of birth to identify the social changes that occurred over the years.

Abstract:While the population of minorities is increasing in the USA, the numbers obtaining advanced degrees in science/engineering and medicine are minimal. Underrepresented groups make up 19% of the USA labor pool, but less than 6% of science (engineering and medicine) Ph.D.'s. Diversifying the universities and health-care institutions is important to improve the academic experience of faculty, staff, students and everyone regardless of race. To prepare for the approaching diverse environments, educational institutions must create programs that allow underrepresented groups thrive in higher education; and logistically to be sustaining, the recruitment programs must begin at the student level. One approach is the integration of the history (the linking of past-heroes with present-heroes) of science; which is an interesting and important paradigm that can be implemented. As such, a day-long symposium highlighting the life and accomplishments of an African American Scientist; Dr. Ernest Everett Just, Ph.D., is used as a working model to inspire, educate on admission requirements, and to recruit into graduate science and medical programs.

Abstract:Over the past few years, there has been an increasing realization that we need a more equal, diverse and inclusive culture for truly successful cancer research to happen. Moreover, that research itself must be relevant to and engage a diverse patient population to achieve effective cancer care. Abstract:Integrating diverse perspectives in psychological science can enhance innovation in research and allow research teams to better study diverse populations of individuals through an authentic lens. Despite recent efforts to better address issues of race and ethnicity in research samples, the field of psychology broadly-and the area of mathematics cognition specifically-has largely failed to support scientists from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. In this essay, we consider the unique contributions that scholars of color can make to psychological research in mathematics cognition. Next, we reveal common challenges faced by scholars of color and challenges to recruiting and maintaining scholars of color in our community with a focus on Black scholars. Finally, we propose actions for diversifying the "pipeline" of promising scholars.

Breaking Stereotypes: How Undergraduates' Life Experiences of Scientists Shape their Scopes of Possibility

Abstract:Building on decades of scholarship critiquing scientist representation in classrooms and textbooks, the present study characterizes the lifetime experiences of undergraduate students regarding their perceptions of scientists and science identity. Informed by the theoretical framework of Cultural Learning Pathways (CLP), we conducted 31 semistructured interviews with undergraduates who completed six Scientist Spotlights (scientistspotlights.org), which are inclusive curricular supplements that feature counterstereotypical scientists. Despite decades of progress in curricular representation, our results revealed almost all students (94%, n = 29) recounted exposure to predominantly (if not exclusively) stereotypical scientists across social institutions (e.g., media, K12, universities, healthcare environments) throughout their lifetime, which limited their Scopes of Possibility to pursue science. All students (100%, n = 31) reported that Scientist Spotlights enhanced Scopes of Possibility for themselves and others from marginalized backgrounds to pursue science. Last, almost all students (97%, n = 30) shared characteristics they hoped to see when imagining Scopes of Possibility, emphasizing the need for a concerted effort to increase representation of counterstereotypical scientists across science curriculum and social institutions more broadly.

Abstract:The purpose the present study is to explore African American undergraduate students' perceptions of their experiences and academic motivation within a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) learning environment. As part of a larger study, we collected 212 open-ended survey responses from first year students in STEM majors about how the HBCU context shapes their academic motivation. We used semantic thematic data analysis and found three major themes and corresponding sub themes that were salient in the development of students' academic motivation: place (institutional climate, HBCU mission and tradition, and absence of marginalization); pedagogy (culturally relevant pedagogy, positive faculty-student relationships, African American curriculum and instruction, racial socialization); and people (people "like me"; student, faculty and alumni models of high achieving African Americans). We discovered that HBCU institutional factors engendered academic motivation that is rooted in students' racial identity and suggest the construct of racial identity-rooted academic motivation. Given the important and unique realities of African American students that impact their educational experiences, engagement, identity development, and achievement in various types of school contexts, self and sociocultural variables must be included in research and theory on the motivational psychology of African American students. Implications for higher education practice and future research are discussed.
A Novel Undergraduate Seminar Course Celebrating Scientific Contributions by Scientists from Historically Marginalized Communities

Abstract:Scientific contributions by members from historically marginalized communities (HMCs) have been largely ignored, uncredited, and in some cases erased from history. This has contributed to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curricula lacking diversity. In this study, we present an Honors seminar course aimed to highlight the discoveries of scientists from HMCs, centered around reading primary literature in a way that builds our students' research skills. The course provides students with opportunities for active learning, skill building, and mentorship that are key for persistence of students in the STEM "leaky pipeline." Students also read biographies of scientists from HMCs, interact with guest speakers, and choose scientists to highlight (in final papers and presentations) and publicize (through the creation of Wikipedia pages). Additionally, students use community-building methodologies to build a safe classroom and gain tools to have conversations about diversity, inequities, and intersectionality in STEM. In self-reporting surveys, 93.7% of students strongly agreed that their appreciation for marginalized scientists increased and 92.6% reported that the course met very well the goal of refining their research skills. These findings support the effectiveness of this novel course. We provide two lists (one of 137 scientists and one of 57 scientist biographies) that will allow faculty teaching a wide range of science classes to select examples of scientists and discoveries to highlight in their courses. This course represents a novel platform to diversify STEM curricula while engaging and empowering students from historically marginalized communities.

Abstract:The continued low numbers of Blacks in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) represent an American crisis that threatens growing awareness and efforts to effectively address health disparities that affect the Black population. Regenerative engineering is an emerging STEMM field that seeks to combine principles from engineering, life sciences, physics, and medicine to develop new technologies for repairing and regenerating damaged tissues and organs. We believe that regenerative engineering has the potential to address some of the root causes of health disparities by developing new approaches that are more accessible and affordable, particularly for low-income communities and people living in rural areas. We have developed a new education program targeting to K-12 groups "A Scientific Program in Regenerative Engineering (ASPIRE)" that supports the mentoring and education of Black K-12 students to enter successfully and thrive as professionals in STEMM particularly in the area of regenerative engineering. We have been collaborating with several public-school systems in Connecticut, especially among the regions with health disparities to implement the program. We believe our new educational K-12 program would serve as a vehicle to reduce health disparities in the region.

Abstract:A history of systemic racism has led to too few Black Americans working in the sciences. Autism research is not immune to this problem, and the dearth of Black scientists and clinicians likely has contributed to health disparities among Black autistic people (Jackson & Nadine Gracia, 2014). People from underrepresented minority groups who are trained in science and medicine are much more likely to study and care for disenfranchised minorities than White scientists and practitioners (Cantor et al., 1996; Komaromy et al., 1996). By recruiting and supporting Black scientists and clinicians, we can address the underrepresentation of Black autistic people in research studies, helping to reduce health disparities and benefitting autism research as a whole.

Historical exploration: This narrative review chronicles the significant contributions of underrepresented radiologists from the early 20th century to the present. By synthesizing historical data, biographical sketches, and contemporary medical literature, we highlight the pivotal roles these pioneers have played in advancing radiology. Their groundbreaking work not only enhanced medical imaging technologies and practices but also championed the cause of diversity and inclusion within the field. These stories of perseverance and innovation underscore the ongoing need for an inclusive approach in the medical community, reflecting on how diversity has shaped and will continue to influence the evolution of radiology. Findings and conclusion: The study identifies several pivotal figures, such as Marcus F. Wheatland, the first known African American radiologist, and Ivy O. Roach Brooks, the first woman to lead a radiology department at a major U.S. hospital. It explores their wide-ranging contributions from clinical practice and education to leadership and advocacy for diversity within the medical profession. The legacies of these radiologists illuminate not just their individual accomplishments but also reflect the broader struggle for equality and representation in the medical field. Their determination and excellence have paved the way for future generations, significantly enhancing the inclusivity and diversity of the radiology field. Clinical relevance and application: Understanding the contributions of these underrepresented radiologists enriches the field's perspective on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
