Abstract:Forest age structure, shaped by past land-use and land-cover changes (LULCC), is pivotal for estimating ecosystem carbon sinks. China's extensive LULCC in recent decades has led to a complex forest age structure, but its impact on the carbon sink remains uncertain. Here, using a process-based ecosystem model with an explicit representation of forest age cohorts, we estimate China's terrestrial carbon sink as 198 +/- 54 TgC yr-1- 1 in the 2010s, mainly contributed by middle-aged forests. The existing forests in 2020 contribute most to the future total carbon sink, but its contribution will decrease significantly by- 1.1 ti- 0.35 TgC yr-1- 1 until 2100 due to forest aging and the slowdown of CO2 2 concentration growth. Future re/afforestation will enhance carbon sink by increasing forest area and rejuvenating forest demography. Our study emphasizes the limited future carbon sink due to forest aging, implying that realizing China's carbon neutrality should not rely excessively on ecosystem carbon sink.
Large potential of strengthening the land carbon sink in China through anthropogenic interventions

Abstract:The terrestrial ecosystem in China mitigates 21%-45% of the national contemporary fossil fuel CO2 emissions every year. Maintaining and strengthening the land carbon sink is essential for reaching China's target of carbon neutrality. However, this sink is subject to large uncertainties due to the joint impacts of climate change, air pollution, and human activities. Here, we explore the potential of strengthening land carbon sink in China through anthropogenic interventions, including forestation, ozone reduction, and litter removal, taking advantage of a well-validated dynamic vegetation model and meteorological forcings from 16 climate models. Without anthropogenic interventions, considering Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) scenarios, the land sink is projected to be 0.26-0.56 Pg C a-1 at 2060, to which climate change contributes 0.06-0.13 Pg C a-1 and CO2 fertilization contributes 0.08-0.44 Pg C a-1 with the stronger effects for higher emission scenarios. With anthropogenic interventions, under a close-to-neutral emission scenario (SSP1-2.6), the land sink becomes 0.47-0.57 Pg C a-1 at 2060, including the contributions of 0.12 Pg C a-1 by conservative forestation, 0.07 Pg C a-1 by ozone pollution control, and 0.06-0.16 Pg C a-1 by 20% litter removal over planted forest. This sink can mitigate 90%-110% of the residue anthropogenic carbon emissions in 2060, providing a solid foundation for the carbon neutrality in China.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon budget accounting relies heavily on Food and Agriculture Organization land-use data reported by governments. Here we develop a new land-use and cover-change database for China, finding that differing historical survey methods biased China’s reported data causing large errors in Food and Agriculture Organization databases. Land ecosystem model simulations driven with the new data reveal a strong carbon sink of 8.9 ± 0.8 Pg carbon from 1980 to 2019 in China, which was not captured in Food and Agriculture Organization data-based estimations due to biased land-use and cover-change signals. The land-use and cover-change in China, characterized by a rapid forest expansion from 1980 to 2019, contributed to nearly 44% of the national terrestrial carbon sink. In contrast, climate changes (22.3%), increasing nitrogen deposition (12.9%), and rising carbon dioxide (8.1%) are less important contributors. This indicates that previous studies have greatly underestimated the impact of land-use and cover-change on the terrestrial carbon balance of China. This study underlines the importance of reliable land-use and cover-change databases in global carbon budget accounting.

Abstract:The magnitude and distribution of China's terrestrial carbon sink remain uncertain due to insufficient constraints at large scales, whereby satellite data offer great potential for reducing the uncertainty. Here, we present two carbon sink estimates for China constrained either by satellite CO2 column concentrations (XCO2) within the Global Carbon Assimilation System or by remotely sensed soil moisture and Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) in addition to in situ CO2 observations within the Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System. They point to a moderate size of carbon sinks of 0.34 ± 0.14 (mean ± unc.) and 0.43 ± 0.09 PgC/yr during 2010–2015, which are supported by an inventory‐based estimate for forest and soil carbon sink (0.26 PgC/yr) and fall in the range of contemporary ensemble atmospheric inversions (0.25–0.48 PgC/yr). They also agree reasonably well on interannual variations, which reflect the carbon sink anomalies induced by regional droughts in southwest China. Furthermore, their spatial distributions are broadly consistent that of the forest inventory‐based estimate, indicating that the largest carbon sinks locate in central and eastern China. Their estimates for forest carbon sink coincide fairly well with the inventory‐based estimate across different regions, especially when aggregated to the north and south of China. Although enhanced recently by afforestation, China's carbon sink was also significantly weakened by regional droughts, which were often not fully represented in previous in situ CO2‐based inversions due to insufficient observations. Our results suggest that satellite‐based atmospheric CO2 and land surface observations are vital in characterizing terrestrial net carbon fluxes at regional scales.

Abstract:Unleashing the land sector's potential for climate mitigation requires purpose-driven changes in land management. However, contributions of past management changes to the current global and regional carbon cycles remain unclear. Here, we use vegetation modelling to reveal how a portfolio of ecological restoration policies has impacted China's terrestrial carbon balance through developing counterfactual 'no-policy' scenarios. Pursuing conventional policies and assuming no changes in climate or atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) since 1980 would have led China's land sector to be a carbon source of 0.11 Pg C yr-1 for 2001-2020, in stark contrast to a sink of 175.9 Tg C yr-1 in reality. About 72.7% of this difference can be attributed to land management changes, including afforestation and reforestation (49.0%), reduced wood extraction (21.8%), fire prevention and suppression (1.6%) and grassland grazing exclusion (0.3%). The remaining 27.3% come from changes in atmospheric CO2 (42.2%) and climate (-14.9%). Our results underscore the potential of active land management in achieving 'carbon-neutrality' in China.

Abstract:Land use and cover change (LUCC) significantly impacts global carbon cycles and land surface properties, accounting for 25% of the historical atmospheric CO 2 increase. We explore a previously overlooked role of LUCC in driving the land carbon cycle by using a three-level meta-analysis and Land Use Harmonization data to drive an ecosystem model. Our findings reveal that a loss of 39.2% of soil organic carbon (SOC) change in China due to LUCC, mitigated by afforestation, doubles gross primary productivity at 0.02 Pg C yr −1 , countering central China's urbanization decline. Indirect climate effects, especially soil bulk density, significantly impact SOC compared to direct climate effects. LUCC has significantly increased the Chinese terrestrial carbon sink, with net ecosystem productivity reaching 0.02 ± 0.12 Pg C yr −1 . Our study underscores the importance of reforestation and afforestation in addressing climate change and enhancing carbon sinks in future carbon management.

Abstract:Abstract Land use policies have turned southern China into one of the most intensively managed forest regions in the world, with actions maximizing forest cover on soils with marginal agricultural potential while concurrently increasing livelihoods and mitigating climate change. Based on satellite observations, here we show that diverse land use changes in southern China have increased standing aboveground carbon stocks by 0.11 ± 0.05 Pg C y −1 during 2002–2017. Most of this regional carbon sink was contributed by newly established forests (32%), while forests already existing contributed 24%. Forest growth in harvested forest areas contributed 16% and non-forest areas contributed 28% to the carbon sink, while timber harvest was tripled. Soil moisture declined significantly in 8% of the area. We demonstrate that land management in southern China has been removing an amount of carbon equivalent to 33% of regional fossil CO 2 emissions during the last 6 years, but forest growth saturation, land competition for food production and soil-water depletion challenge the longevity of this carbon sink service.

The carbon sink potential of southern China after two decades of afforestation

Abstract:Afforestation and land use changes that sequester carbon from the atmosphere in the form of woody biomass have turned Southern China into one of the largest carbon sinks globally, which contributes to mitigating climate change. However, forest growth saturation and available land that can be forested limit the longevity of this carbon sink, and while a plethora of studies have quantified vegetation changes over the last decades, the remaining carbon sink potential of this area is currently unknown. Here, we train a model with multiple predictors characterizing the heterogeneous landscapes of Southern China and predict the biomass carbon carrying capacity of the region for 2002‐2017. We compare observed and predicted biomass carbon density and find that during about two decades of afforestation, 2.34 PgC have been sequestered between 2002 and 2017, and a total of 5.32 Pg carbon can potentially still be sequestrated. This means that the region has reached 73% of its aboveground biomass carbon carrying capacity in 2017, which is 12% more than in 2002, equal to a decrease of 0.77% per year. We identify potential afforestation areas that can still sequester 2.39 PgC, while old and new forests have reached 87% of their potential with 1.85 PgC remaining. Our work locates areas where vegetation has not yet reached its full potential but also shows that afforestation is not a long‐term solution for climate change mitigation.

Abstract:Enhancing the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink (referred to as terrestrial C sink) is an important way to slow down the continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality target. To better understand the characteristics of terrestrial C sinks and their contribution to carbon neutrality, this review summarizes major progress in terrestrial C budget researches during the past decades, clarifies spatial patterns and drivers of terrestrial C sources and sinks in China and around the world, and examines the role of terrestrial C sinks in achieving carbon neutrality target. According to recent studies, the global terrestrial C sink has been increasing from a source of (−0.2±0.9) Pg C yr−1 (1 Pg=1015 g) in the 1960s to a sink of (1.9±1.1) Pg C yr−1 in the 2010s. By synthesizing the published data, we estimate terrestrial C sink of 0.20–0.25 Pg C yr−1 in China during the past decades, and predict it to be 0.15–0.52 Pg C yr−1 by 2060. The terrestrial C sinks are mainly located in the mid- and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, while tropical regions act as a weak C sink or source. The C balance differs much among ecosystem types: forest is the major C sink; shrubland, wetland and farmland soil act as C sinks; and whether the grassland functions as C sink or source remains unclear. Desert might be a C sink, but the magnitude and the associated mechanisms are still controversial. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration, nitrogen deposition, climate change, and land cover change are the main drivers of terrestrial C sinks, while other factors such as fires and aerosols would also affect ecosystem C balance. The driving factors of terrestrial C sink differ among regions. Elevated CO2 concentration and climate change are major drivers of the C sinks in North America and Europe, while afforestation and ecological restoration are additionally important forcing factors of terrestrial C sinks in China. For future studies, we recommend the necessity for intensive and long term ecosystem C monitoring over broad geographic scale to improve terrestrial biosphere models for accurately evaluating terrestrial C budget and its dynamics under various climate change and policy scenarios.

Abstract:China announced its national goal to reach the peak of carbon emission by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, during the General Assembly of the United Nations in September 2020. In this context, the potential of the carbon sink in China's terrestrial ecosystems to mitigate anthropogenic carbon emissions has attracted unprecedented attention from scientific communities, policy makers and the public. Here, we reviewed the assessments on China's terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink, with focus on the principles, frameworks and methods of terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink estimates, as well as the recent progress and existing problems. Looking forward, we identified critical issues for improving the accuracy and precision of China's terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink, in order to serve the more realistic policy making in pathways to achieve carbon neutrality for China.

Abstract:China's carbon balanceThe publication of a comprehensive assessment of China's terrestrial carbon budget fills a major gap in the geographical spread of carbon balance data, and helps to further reduce uncertainties in the Northern Hemisphere carbon balance. Three different indicators were used to monitor China's carbon balance and its driving mechanisms during the 1980s and 1990s: biomass and soil carbon inventories extrapolated from satellite greenness measurements, ecosystem models and atmospheric inversions. The three methods produce similar estimates for the net carbon sink at 0.19 to 0.26 petagrams per year. Global terrestrial ecosystems, in comparison, have absorbed carbon at a rate of 1 to 4 Pg carbon per year during the 1980s and 1990s, which offsets 10–60% of fossil fuel emissions. Northeast China is a net source of CO2 to the atmosphere as a result over-harvesting and degradation of forests. In contrast, southern China accounts for over 65% of the carbon sink, attributable to regional climate change, tree planting and shrub recovery.

Abstract:Background: China's terrestrial ecosystems play a pronounced role in the global carbon cycle. Here we combine spatially-explicit information on vegetation, soil, topography, climate and land use change with a process-based biogeochemistry model to quantify the responses of terrestrial carbon cycle in China during the 20th century. Results: At a century scale, China's terrestrial ecosystems have acted as a carbon sink averaging at 96 Tg C yr- 1, with large inter-annual and decadal variabilities. The regional sink has been enhanced due to the rising temperature and CO2 concentration, with a slight increase trend in carbon sink strength along with the enhanced net primary production in the century. The areas characterized by C source are simulated to extend in the west and north of the Hu Huanyong line, while the eastern and southern regions increase their area and intensity of C sink, particularly in the late 20th century. Forest ecosystems dominate the C sink in China and are responsible for about 64% of the total sink. On the century scale, the increase in carbon sinks in China's terrestrial ecosystems is mainly contributed by rising CO2. Afforestation and reforestation promote an increase in terrestrial carbon uptake in China from 1950s. Although climate change has generally contributed to the increase of carbon sinks in terrestrial ecosystems in China, the positive effect of climate change has been diminishing in the last decades of the 20th century. Conclusion: This study focuses on the impacts of climate, CO2 and land use change on the carbon cycle, and presents the potential trends of terrestrial ecosystem carbon balance in China at a century scale. While a slight increase in carbon sink strength benefits from the enhanced vegetation carbon uptake in China's terrestrial ecosystems during the 20th century, the increase trend may diminish or even change to a decrease trend under future climate change.

Abstract:Accurately assessing the carbon sink and spatial distribution pattern of China's terrestrial ecosystems is of great significance to the implementation of climate change and carbon neutrality strategy. However, the views of various studies are still very controversial due to the differences in carbon sink estimation methods and data sources. In this study, vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) and ecosystem heterotrophic respiration (Rh) estimation models were constructed based on machine learning methods by fusing multisource data, such as remote sensing and ground observation data. The magnitude and spatial pattern of carbon sink in China from 2000 to 2018 were then revealed, and the carbon sink capacity of various ecosystems was quantitatively assessed. The main conclusions include the following: (1) The use of scale-matched carbon input and output data can help reduce the system error in carbon sink estimation. (2) China's terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink since the twenty-first century is approximately 0.458 Pg C/yr, which is equivalent to 22.72% of China's anthropogenic carbon emissions. (3) Deciduous forest has a higher carbon sink capacity than evergreen forest , while coniferous forest has a more stable carbon sink capacity than broad-leaved forest. Abstract:Significance Previous estimations of carbon budgets in China’s terrestrial ecosystems varied greatly because of the multiplicity of data sources and the inconsistency of methodologies. By conducting a methodologically consistent field campaign across the country, we estimated that the total carbon pool in China’s forests, shrublands, grasslands, and croplands was 79.24 ± 2.42 Pg C. The carbon density exhibited a strong dependence on climate regime: it decreased with temperature but increased with precipitation. The country’s forests have a large potential of biomass carbon sequestration of 1.9–3.4 Pg C in the next 10 to 20 years assuming no removals. Our findings provide a benchmark to identify the effectiveness of the government’s natural protection policies.

Abstract:Increasing the carbon sink capacity of terrestrial ecosystems is a primary strategy to mitigate climate change and achieve the "carbon neutrality" goal. Clarifying the status and future dynamics of carbon sink of terrestrial ecosystems in Northeast China is crucial for achieving "carbon neutrality" as this region is a core contributor to carbon sink in China's terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we systematically summarized current research on carbon sink of terrestrial ecosystems across Northeast China, including the measurements and spatial-temporal patterns of carbon sinks, driving mechanisms of carbon sinks, the assessments of carbon sink potential, and technologies for increasing carbon sequestration. There are substantial uncertainties in quantifying terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink in Northeast China due to differences in data sources and methods, especially for forest carbon sink measurements, ranging from 0.020 to 0.157 Pg C·a-1. Carbon sink function depends on carbon exchange processes across plant-soil-atmosphere interfaces. The key pathways to enhance carbon sequestration in Northeast China under different temporal and spatial scales remains unclear. Improving terrestrial ecosystem quality is the key and core of carbon sequestration and sink enhancement. However, there is an urgent need to develop a multi-ecosystem collaborative carbon sequestration and sink enhancement technology system for the "dual carbon" goal. Future research needs to develop an accurate carbon sink measurement system that integrates multi-source data and multi-scale technologies to accurately assess the function and potential of carbon sink in Northeast China, focus on the multi-scale driving mechanism of carbon sink functions, develop new technical systems for coordinated enhancement of carbon sink for the Northeast terrestrial ecosystems, and carry out demonstrations of carbon sink enhancement technologies. These efforts will provide the scientific and technological supports for achieving the "carbon neutrality" goal.

Abstract:The widespread utilization of fossil fuels has emitted large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution, leading to climate warming and frequent occurrence of extreme climate events. To effectively alleviate climate change, the international community has made various efforts to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate CO2 from the atmosphere. In 2020, the Chinese government announced that carbon emission peaking and carbon neutrality will be achieved by 2030 and 2060, respectively. According to the current forecast, by the time carbon neutrality is achieved in 2060, even under the minimum conditions of fossil energy use, production, and living emissions, China will still have to emit about 1/4 of the current total emissions. These carbon must primarily be absorbed by ecosystems. Furthermore, approximately 140 ppm increase in CO2 in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution still needs to be removed by ecosystems. Forests are the main component of terrestrial ecosystems, contributing more than 80% of the carbon sequestration capacity of all terrestrial ecosystems. However, due to the long periodicity, complexity and dynamic variability of forests, the basic concepts of ecosystem carbon sink and its time effect are still unclear, leading to problems, such as lacking technologies for improving carbon sink capacity and disorganized rules in the carbon sink trading market. In this review, we introduced carbon sink concept according to the processes of absorbing and fixing CO2 by plant photosynthesis in forest ecosystems. Then, we analyzed the processes of time-scale-dependent carbon sinks of forest ecosystems, discussed the time effects of forest carbon sinks, and suggested using "t-year" as the unit of carbon sink (taking 3-6 months as the minimum measurement time, i.e., the beginning of carbon sequestration). Third, we proposed the approaches to improve the carbon sink capacity of forest ecosystems. One way is to improve the carbon sink capacity (expanding forest area, improving forest quality, and increasing forest soil carbon storage) of forest ecosystems. Another approach is to maintain the carbon sink of forest ecosystems as long as possible, i.e., to reduce temporary carbon sink (definition: carbon in the forest ecosystems emit into the atmosphere for a certain period) and to increase persistent carbon sink (definition: carbon in the forest ecosystems no longer emit into the atmosphere for a certain period; according to the relevant provisions of the Paris Agreement, the upper time limit for carbon sink measurement can be considered to be the year 2100. In order to maintain the persistent carbon sink, strateges such as efficient use of wood products (replace steel, cement, plastic with wood), control of forest fires or other disturbances-induced emissions, and turning forest biomass into biochar should be taken. Finally, we proposed to develop climate-smart forestry driven by artificial intelligence (AI), which would provide new theoretical and technical support for improving the carbon sink of forest ecosystems and facilitating sustainable forest management.

Abstract:China's terrestrial ecosystems have functioned as important carbon sinks. However, previous estimates of carbon budgets have included large uncertainties owing to the limitations of sample size, multiple data sources, and inconsistent methodologies. In this study, we conducted an intensive field campaign involving 14,371 field plots to investigate all sectors of carbon stocks in China's forests, shrublands, grasslands, and croplands to better estimate the regional and national carbon pools and to explore the biogeographical patterns and potential drivers of these pools. The total carbon pool in these four ecosystems was 79.24 ± 2.42 Pg C, of which 82.9% was stored in soil (to a depth of 1 m), 16.5% in biomass, and 0.60% in litter. Forests, shrublands, grasslands, and croplands contained 30.83 ± 1.57 Pg C, 6.69 ± 0.32 Pg C, 25.40 ± 1.49 Pg C, and 16.32 ± 0.41 Pg C, respectively. When all terrestrial ecosystems are taken into account, the country's total carbon pool is 89.27 ± 1.05 Pg C. The carbon density of the forests, shrublands, and grasslands exhibited a strong correlation with climate: it decreased with increasing temperature but increased with increasing precipitation. Our analysis also suggests a significant sequestration potential of 1.9-3.4 Pg C in forest biomass in the next 10-20 years assuming no removals, mainly because of forest growth. Our results update the estimates of carbon pools in China's terrestrial ecosystems based on direct field measurements, and these estimates are essential to the validation and parameterization of carbon models in China and globally.
