Abstract:Although the recently synthesized nanotwinned diamond was found with Vickers hardness exceeding 200 GPa, almost twice the commonly quoted hardness of single crystal diamond, there are still some controversies about the twin-size effects on its hardness and the related plastic deformation mechanisms under Vickers indentations. Through molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the behaviors of nanotwinned diamond models under Vickers indentations. Our results indicate that the hardness of nanotwinned diamond would increase with the decreasing of twin boundary separations, but the increasing rate would be reduced due to the concentrated twin boundaries. A formula was given to depict the relationship between hardness and twin thickness, and was consistence with the simulation results. We found that the hardness of nanotwinned diamond is mainly resulted from the competition between strengthening and softening effects of twin boundaries, and the related mechanisms are qualitatively discussed. This work not only provide an answer for the questions about the hardness of nanotwinned diamond versus twin boundary separations, but also offer insights into the plasticity of nanotwinned diamond, which could be beneficial to the design of novel nano structured ultrahard materials and evaluate their origins of hardness and strength.

Abstract:Grain boundaries (GBs), with their diversity in both structure and structural transitions, play an essential role in tailoring the properties of polycrystalline materials 1 – 5 . As a unique GB subset, {112} incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs) are ubiquitous in nanotwinned, face-centred cubic materials 6 – 9 . Although multiple ITB configurations and transitions have been reported 7 , 10 , their transition mechanisms and impacts on mechanical properties remain largely unexplored, especially in regard to covalent materials. Here we report atomic observations of six ITB configurations and structural transitions in diamond at room temperature, showing a dislocation-mediated mechanism different from metallic systems 11 , 12 . The dominant ITBs are asymmetric and less mobile, contributing strongly to continuous hardening in nanotwinned diamond 13 . The potential driving forces of ITB activities are discussed. Our findings shed new light on GB behaviour in diamond and covalent materials, pointing to a new strategy for development of high-performance, nanotwinned materials.
Interactions Between Dislocations and Penta-Twins in Metallic Nanocrystals

Abstract:Dislocation interactions with twin boundary (TB) have been well-established in nanotwinned metals. Penta-twins, as an extreme of crystal twinning, are tacitly assumed to be more effective at blocking dislocation motions than conventional single or coplanar nanotwins. However, the mechanism underlying the interactions between dislocations and penta-twins remains largely unclear. Here, by combining in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) nanomechanical testing and atomistic simulations, we rationalize the fundamental interactions between dislocations and penta-twins in Au nanocrystals. Our results reveal that the interactions between dislocations and penta-twins show some similar behaviors to the ones in the cases of coplanar nanotwins, including dislocation impedance at TBs, cross-slip into the twinning plane and transmission across the TB. In addition, penta-twins also exhibit some unique behaviors during dislocation interactions, including multiple cross-slip, dislocation-induced core dissociation and climb-induced annihilation/absorption at the penta-twin core. These findings enhance our mechanistic understanding of dislocation behaviors in penta-twins, shedding light on the accessible design of high-performance nanomaterials with multi-twinned nanostructures.

Abstract:Twinning is commonly activated in plastic deformation of low stacking-fault face-centered cubic (Fcc) metals but rarely found in body-centered cubic (Bcc) metals under room temperature and slow strain rates. Here, by conducting in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at atomic scale, we discover that, in stark contrast to those in most Fcc metals, a majority of deformation twins in Bcc metals are unstable and undergo spontaneously detwinning upon unloading. Such unexpected instability of Bcc twins is found to be closely related to the prevalence of the inclined twin boundaries-a peculiar structure where twin boundaries are not parallel to the twinning plane, and the degree of instability is in direct proportion to the fraction of the inclined twin boundary. This work provides significant insights into the structure and stability of deformation twins in Bcc metals.

Abstract:Recent studies have revealed unprecedented fracture toughness in synthesized nanotwinned diamond (nt-diamond) due to the obstruction of dislocations by twin boundary. However, the atomic-scale interactions between dislocations and twin boundary in diamond remain elusive and unclear. In this work, we take advantage of the recently published interatomic potential for diamond’s dislocation activity to study the interactions between (001) dislocation and (111) twin boundary in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The twin boundaries show obvious hindrance for (001) dislocation. In the penetrations, the shuffle-set dislocation will climb to the upper gliding plane and leave a vacancy tube behind. With the gradual increase of applied shear stress, the vacancy left on the twin boundary could launch another shuffle-set dislocation in the opposite direction in matrix. The mechanism revealed in this work show obvious difference between the interaction between twinning and dislocation in metals. This study will provide a fundamental understanding of the dislocation behaviors and their strengthening and toughing mechanisms in nt-diamond materials and the related materials.
Giant thermal conductivity in diamane and the influence of horizontal reflection symmetry on phonon scattering

Abstract:Diamane, a chemically derived two-dimensional material, shows many superior physical and chemical properties similar to diamond thin films. Through the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation, we reveal giant thermal conductivity in diamane with a stacking order of both AB and AA (respectively, abbreviated as D-AB and D-AA, hereafter) which are both comparable to that of diamond. Like in graphene, the phonon transport falls into the hydrodynamic regime even at room temperature, and the major contribution to the total thermal conductivity comes from the out-of-plane acoustic phonon modes (>40%). In addition, the thermal conductivity shows a dependence on the stacking order, namely, the thermal conductivity of D-AA, ∼2240 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K, is around 15% larger than that of D-AB, which is due to the strong restriction on the phonon scattering phase space induced by the horizontal reflection symmetry in D-AA. Such a kind of restriction, not limited to single atomic plane systems, is a general feature in two-dimensional materials with a horizontal reflection symmetry.

Abstract:Twin boundary defects form in virtually all crystalline materials as part of their response to applied deformation or thermal stress. For nearly six decades, graphite has been used as a textbook example of twinning with illustrations showing atomically sharp interfaces between parent and twin. Using state-of-the-art high-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, we have captured atomic resolution images of graphitic twin boundaries and find that these interfaces are far more complex than previously supposed. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the presence of van der Waals bonding eliminates the requirement for an atomically sharp interface, resulting in long-range bending across multiple unit cells. We show these remarkable structures are common to other van der Waals materials, leading to extraordinary microstructures, Raman-active stacking faults, and sub-surface exfoliation within bulk crystals.

Tunable band gap of diamond twin boundaries by strain engineering

Abstract:Diamond thin films are promising wide band gap semiconductor materials for applications in electronic and microwave devices. Revealing the mechanism of how twin boundaries impact the band gap of diamond is of critical importance since they are the most common defects in polycrystalline diamond films. Here, nanocrystalline diamond films are synthesized by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The atomic and electronic structures of diamond lamellar and fivefold twins, and their evolution behaviors with the increase of axial tensile strain, are investigated by combining aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy with first-principles calculations. There is no intrinsic stress concentration at the lamellar twin boundary, and its band gap equals to that of the bulk diamond (i.e., 5.3 eV). An intrinsic in-plane compressive stress field is formed and the band gap is increased evidently (i.e., 0.6 eV) in the center of fivefold twins. When applying an axial tensile strain up to 15%, the band gaps of the bulk diamond, lamellar and fivefold twins reduce significantly to 2.2 eV, 2.1 eV and 2.4 eV, respectively, which are mainly due to the decrease of pz orbital energy caused by the increase of axial bond length during the tensile process. Under the same axial tensile strain, the band gap of the fivefold twin is always larger than those of the lamellar twin and the bulk diamond due to the formation of in-plane five-membered carbon rings in the center. The findings of the tunable band gap by strain engineering will benefit for the innovation and design of advanced diamond functional devices.

Abstract:Coherent twin boundaries form periodic lamellar twinning in a wide variety of semiconductor nanowires, and are often viewed as near-perfect interfaces with reduced phonon and electron scattering behaviors. Such unique characteristics are of practical interest for high-performance thermoelectrics and optoelectronics; however, insufficient understanding of twin-size effects on thermal boundary resistance poses significant limitations for potential applications. Here, using atomistic simulations and ab-initio calculations, we report direct computational observations showing a crossover from diffuse interface scattering to superlattice-like behavior for thermal transport across nanoscale twin boundaries present in prototypical bulk and nanowire Si examples. Intrinsic interface scattering is identified for twin periods larger than or equal to 22.6 nm, but also vanishes below this size to be replaced by ultrahigh Kapitza thermal conductances. Detailed analysis of vibrational modes shows that modeling twin boundaries as atomically-thin 6H-Si layers, rather than phonon scattering interfaces, provides an accurate description of effective cross-plane and in-plane thermal conductivities in twinning superlattices, as a function of the twin period thickness.

Abstract:Two-dimensional diamond, also called diamane, has attracted great research attention for its novel physical properties and potential applications in nanoelectronics, ultrasensitive resonator and thermal management. Compared with the hexagonal diamane, the physical properties of rectangular diamane are less explored. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we conducted a comprehensive study on electronic, phononic, thermal and mechanical properties of three types of rectangular diamane. We found that rectangular diamanes possess high Debye temperature (722-788 K) and strong in-plane Young modulus (405.9-575.9 N/m). We further show close to zero Poisson's ratio in rectangular Pmma diamane. Moreover, based on the phonon Boltzmann transport equation, high room temperature lattice thermal conductivity (910-1807 W/mK) and strong configuration and orientation dependence are demonstrated. Phonon group velocity, relaxation time and characteristic square velocity are explored and it is demonstrated that phonon harmonic behavior is responsible for the remarkable configuration dependent thermal conductivity in rectangular diamanes. The present work underscores the use of nanostructure engineering to manipulate thermal conductivity of 2D diamond, which provides opportunities for developing effective thermal channeling devices.

Abstract:Comprehensive understanding of phonon transport will facilitate the exploration of materials. Four-phonon scattering is find to be important to determine thermal conductivity in many materials, and normal scattering (N process) could lead to some unique phonon transport behaviors, especially in 2D materials. In this work, we studied four-phonon and normal scattering in hexagonal structures, both of which were found to be significant. With the increase of atomic mass ratio, the relative four-phonon scattering is gradually enhanced, whereas N process is weakened. Callaway model and Allen’s modified models were used to approximate the thermal conductivity, and we find that the models are applicable in some cases with relative weak N scattering intensity.

Abstract:The success in enhancing diamond by introducing nanotwins opens a new frontier in the development of superhard materials. However, the underlying hardening mechanism of nanotwinned diamond (nt-diamond) remains elusive and a persistent research focus. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to unveil the performance enhancement in nt-diamond mediated by quantum confinement effect. This effect is characterized by the non-uniform valence charge density of C-C bonds near the twin boundary, leading to incomplete bond breakage at the onset of elastic instability and identified as the key factor in delaying cracking. These findings not only contribute to establishing the theory of hardness in superhard materials, but also suggest new avenues for enhancing their mechanical performance through the introduction of heterogeneous structures and dopant atoms aligned with the principle of quantum confinement effect.

A New Approach to Measure Phonon Dispersion Relation (pdr) by Raman Scattering and A Downbending Observation in Diamond Pdr

Abstract:The phonon dispersion relation (PDR), i.e., the dependence of phonon frequency co on its wavevector q, omega(q), was measured traditionally by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) or inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS). A new approach to measure PDR by Raman scattering (RS) of nanostructures was proposed and applied to observe the longitudinal optical (LO) PDR of diamond successfully. Due to the higher resolution and accuracy of co and q in RS, a clear downbending feature of co with increasing q away from the Brillouin zoon center was observed for the first time.The validity of the new approach has been confirmed also by the appearing of the downward bending in PDR, which is originally measured by traditional high-resolution IXS experiment.The downbending feature may give us a clue for deep understanding of the interactions occur in diamond, while the overbending feature observed by INS and IXS has been attributed to strong effective second-nearest neighbor forces.
Twinning induced by elastic anisotropy in FCC crystals

Abstract:Dislocation slip and deformation twin are widely regarded as two important mechanisms of active competition in the process of plastic deformation. Calculating and comparing the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of two deformation modes are the key to discussing the mechanical properties reflected by different mechanisms in crystals. Here, the paper proposes a model to predict the CRSS of discrete twins, resembling thin layers, using the elastic anisotropy theory and a macroscopic energy perspective. In addition, the directionality of deformation twinning is also verified. We investigated twinning in FCC crystals to illustrate the methodology, and predicted the CRSS of twinning under different variables such as temperature and strain rate, both of which were in excellent agreement with experimental and other theory results. It draws the conclusion that we can promote twinning nucleation by applying shear stress along the <112> direction to reduce the interface energy as a resistance term and increase the difference in strain energy for twinning nucleation. This conclusion provides a guiding direction for exploring and accurately predicting the conditions of twinning in FCC crystals in future.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation method was used to study the influence of co-lattice twin boundary (TB) spacing on the deformation behavior of Al 0.1 CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy single crystal under uniaxial tension. Studies have shown that there is a “critical distance” between the twin boundaries, and the sensitivity of the two sides to the change of the twin spacing is different, and the influence of the evolution of the deformation mechanism of the different twin spacing is analyzed from the number of defects and the evolution of the dislocation density. The results show that as the distance between twins decreases, the deformation mechanism gradually transforms from dislocation slip accompanied by defects, such as stacking faults and secondary twins, to a deformation mode of amorphous phase transition. The research aims to provide guidance and reference for the design of high-performance high-entropy alloys.

Abstract:Twin boundary (TB) plays an important role in the deformation process of materials. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to investigate the nanoindentation deformation behaviour of single-crystal FeCoCrNiCu high entropy alloy (SC-HEA) and nano-twinned FeCoCrNiCu high entropy alloy (NT-HEA) with different twin spacings. It is found that the main characteristic of plastic deformation of SC-HEA is the dislocation loop emission. The dislocation movement and distribution of NT-HEA are very different from that of SC-HEA. We found that partial dislocation slip parallel to the twin boundary (PSPTB) and twin partial slip (TPS) can lead to alloy softening. The hindrance of the TB causes the dislocation to slip within a single layer (known as confined layer slip, CLS), which strengthens the material. In the process of nanoindentation, the softening and strengthening mechanisms are constantly competing. When the twin spacing is larger than 1.23 nm, CLS dominates the competition with the hardening mechanism, and the hardness of the material increases with the decrease of the twin spacing. When the twin spacing is less than 1.23 nm, the dominant mechanism of plastic deformation changes to the softening mechanism controlled by TPS, and the hardness thus decreases as twin spacing increases.

Abstract:The orientation between twin boundary (TB) and loading direction may play an intriguing role in the deformation behaviors of twinned metallic materials. In this aspect, its essential effect on the high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanocrystals is elusive. Attention herein is focused on the atomicscaled deformation mechanisms and fracture behaviors of HEA nanocrystals containing twins of even smaller spacings via a combined approach of in situ tensile tests inside a high-resolution transmission electron microscope and molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the deformation mechanisms (especially dislocation activities) of HEA nanocrystals depend on the load orientation with respect to TBs. Because of the low activation energy and uneven local composition of HEA, the surface acts as an effective dislocation source and, together with Schmid factor, dominate the activated dislocation slip system. The load orientation-dependent TB-dislocation interactions may transform the type of fracture from semi-brittle to ductile. Our results indicate that the deformation mechanisms and the types of fracture in HEA nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the orientation. The nanotwinned materials attract extensive attention because of their exceptional combination of high strength and ductility. The deep understanding of the role of twin will bring advances to design new strong and ductile materials. The orientation between twin boundary (TB) and loading direction plays an intriguing role in the deformation behaviors. In this work, we use a novel method, in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) melting, to produce nanotwin with special load/TB orientation. The strong load/TB orientation dependences of deformation mechanisms and fracture modes are revealed via in situ TEM strain and molecular dynamics simulations. The free surface together with Schmid factor dominate the activated dislocation slip system. This work points out an alternative route in designing advanced twin-inducedplasticity materials by controlling load/TB orientations.
