Abstract:Background: Salmonella gastroenteritis is a global health concern. Recently, increased resistance to Salmonella typhimurium has been reported in several countries. Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTX-M, blaPSE-1, sipB/C, and cmlA/tetR genes in S. typhimurium isolates and determine their antibiotic resistance. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 110 fecal samples, which were collected from the patients referred to the hospitals and medical centers in Tabriz, Iran during eight months. After phenotypic identification, the antibiogram test and double-disc synergy test were performed on the isolates. Following that, the prevalence of resistance genes was evaluated using multiplex PCR and specific primers. Results: Out of 110 fecal samples, 26 samples (23.63%) were positive for S. typhimurium. The highest resistance of the isolates was against ceftazidime, cefotaxime, amikacin, and tetracycline (100%), and the lowest resistance was against imipenem (3.85%) and nalidixic acid (7.69%). In total, 15 S. typhimurium isolates (57.69%) were positive for the extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. In addition, the most common resistance genes in the isolates were cmlA/tetR (38.46%), blaTEM (34.61%), and blaCTX-M (26.92%). Four isolates (15.38%) carried sipB, three isolates (11.53%) contained blaSHV, and two isolates (7.69%) carried blaPSE-1. Conclusions: The obtained results indicated the high prevalence of antibiotic-resistant S. typhimurium. Therefore, the identification of resistance genes is an important strategy for identifying and counteracting antibiotic resistance.

Abstract:To understand the distribution of the serotypes of Shigella spp. and to investigate the drug-resistant genes of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) in Shigella in Zhejiang province, we have collected clinically isolated Shigella isolates from 2 hospitals in Zhejiang province during August to December of 2006. There are 11 Shigella flexneri and 13 Shigella sonnei isolates, respectively. Among the 11 S. flexneri, 9 are serotype F4 and the remaining 2 are F1a and F2a. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests revealed that 20.8% of the isolates were resistant to cefotaxime and 20.8% of the isolates were intermediate to cefotaxime. Isoelectric focusing demonstrated that the ESBL-positive isolates and their transconjugants produce a single β-lactamase with a pI of 7.9 or 9.0. DNA sequence analysis demonstrated that they harbor either CTX-M-14 or CTX-M-15 gene. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis showed that 9 F4 S. flexneri isolates belong to the same clone and 13 S. sonnei isolates from different regions in Zhejiang province belong to different subclones of the same clone. In summary, resistance and reduced susceptibility to β-lactam antibiotics were mainly caused by the production of CTX-M-type ESBLs. This is the first report of CTX-M-15-type ESBLs in S. sonnei in China.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the phenotypes and genotypes of extended -spectrum β-lacta-mases (ESBLs) and AmpC β-lactamases produced by cefoxitin-resistant Shigella strains isolated from Zhe-jiang province and the virulence of those strains .Methods Kirby-Bauer antibiotic testing was performed to screen cefoxitin-resistant strains from 356 Shigella isolates.The serotypes of the cefoxitin-resistant strains were detected .The phenotypes of ESBLs and AmpC β-lactamases from cefoxitin-resistant strains were detec-ted by ESBLs confirmatory test and AmpC-three-dimensional test ,respectively .The genotypes of ESBLs and AmpC β-lactamases were analyzed by PCR and sequence analysis .The virulence genes ( virA, ial, iapH, set1A, set1B and sen) in the cefoxitin-resistant strains were screened by PCR .Results Eight cefoxitin-re-sistant strains were identified from 356 Shigella isolates.Among them,six strains were identified as Shigella flexneri (S.fleaneri) strain (four F2a,one F2b and one F2c),and the rest were identified as Shigella sonnie (S.sonnei) strain.Among all eight cefoxitin-resistant strains,five strains showed positive results for ESBLs confirmatory test and two strains showed positive results for AmpC-three-dimensional test .Seven out of the eight strains harbor ESBLs genes (CTX-M-14,15,57 and/or OXA-30),two of which were positive for AmpC genes (DHA-1 and CMY-2).Five out of the eight cefoxitin-resistant strains carried all of the six tested viru-lence genes,while the other three strains possessed four virulence genes except for set1A and set1B.The two strains producing both ESBLs and AmpC β-lactamases were susceptible only to imipenem .Conclusion ESBLs positive isolates are prevalent strains of cefoxitin-resistant Shigella with potential high virulence .Some of them also produce AmpC β-lactamases ,and the DHA-1 type of AmpCβ-lactamase is identified for the first time in China .

Abstract:Aims Escherichia coli is one of the most important causes of hospital-acquired and community-acquired infections in humans and can easily gain resistance to antibiotics consumed by humans and animals. The main objectives of this study were to assess antibiotic resistance outlines and detection of antibiotic resistance and virulence genes, including the blaCTX-M and pap among the E. coli isolates recovered from the urine of patients referred to Shaheed Madani Hospital (Bejestan, Northeast of Iran). Methods & Materials This cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2016 to March 2018. A total of 100 non-duplicate isolates of E. coli were recovered from the urine of patients referred to Shaheed Madani Hospital (Bejestan, Northeast of Iran). Antimicrobial susceptibility test and extended-spectrum-beta-Lactamases (ESBLs) production were performed according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. The polymerase chain reaction was carried out for the detection and distribution of the pap virulence gene and blaCTX-M antibiotic resistance gene. Findings About 100 E. coli isolates were recovered from the urine sample of patients (21 male, and 79 female). Carbapenems were the most effective antibiotic against isolates. Four strains (4%) were resistant to colistin. Twenty-seven strains (27%) were ESBL-positive. Carbapenems were the most effective antibiotic against ESBL-positive strains. Also, 82% and 89% of isolates were blaCTX-M and pap gene positive, respectively. Conclusion This study has shown that ESBL-positive strains with a high level of drug resistance and virulence factors are a potential risk for hospital wards. Colistin resistant isolates found in our study are quite alarming.

Abstract:Abstract Bckground : Increasing use of beta-lactam antimicrobials in the treatment of bacterial infections has increased resistance against them. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the patterns of antibiotic susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics and to investigate the presence of beta-lactamase and Metallo-beta-lactamase genes blaKPC, blaTEM, blaAmpc, blaIND, blaSIM, and blaGIM in clinical specimens of Escherichia coli . Methods : In this study, 100 urine samples were collected from different wards of hospitals and treatment centers in the west of Tehran province, and 100 strains of Escherichia coli were confirmed by biochemical tests. In the next step, a susceptibility test was performed on 3 selected antibiotics. Then, using the Combine Disk Test method, ESBL and MBL strains were identified. Finally, using the multiplex PCR method, the strains producing KPC, TEM, Ampc, IND, GIM, and SIM enzymes were identified. Results : In this study, the highest resistance of strains to cefotaxime was observed. n = 52 (52%) and their highest sensitivity to imipenem was seen n = 95 (95%). Also, n = 53 (53%) of the samples had ESBL genes. Also, 41 isolates (77%) of the studied strains contained the blaTEM gene, 12 isolates (23%) of the strains contained the blaAmpc gene and 20 isolates (38%) of the strains contained blakpc gene. Also, n= 19 (19%) of the samples had MBL genes. Also, 4 isolates (21%) of the strains contained the IND gene, 4 isolates (21%) of the strains contained the GIM gene, 7 isolates (37%) contained the SIM gene. Conclusion : Due to the high percentage of resistance to third-generation cephalosporins, careful antibiogram testing before antibiotic administration in infections caused by ESBL and MBL-producing organisms is an unavoidable necessity. Therefore, by quickly and correctly identifying the pattern of antibiotic resistance, the physician will be able to select the appropriate antibiotic therapy and prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance.

The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of antibiotics resistance and virulence genes among Escherichia coli strains isolated from UTIs in the north of Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed at 5 teaching hospitals in Rasht in the north of Iran. Totally, 129 E. coli isolates were identified by standard microbiologic tests. Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern was determined using disk diffusion method. The presence of virulence genes was detected by PCR method. Results: The results of antibiotic susceptibility showed that the highest resistance rates were to ampicillin (78.3%) followed by nalidixic acid (74.4%) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (69.8%). On the other hand, the highest susceptibility was toward nitrofurantoin (96.1%) and imipenem (92.2%). Further analysis revealed that the rate of ESBL-producing and multiple-drug resistant isolates was 51.2% and 84.5%, respectively. Molecular analysis revealed that traaT (87.6%) gene was the most prevalent virulence factors followed by fyuA (86%) and kpsmt (76%) genes. Also, fimH gene was the most frequently detected adhesion-associated gene with 74.4%. Conclusion: In summary, our results showed a remarkable rate of drug resistance and heterogeneity for virulence factors among E. coli strains isolated from UTIs in the north of Iran. The emergence of such strains can be a predictive marker for their persistence in the hospital and consequently a significant threat for hospitalized patients. High-level aminoglycoside resistance and distribution of aminoglycoside resistance genes among Enterococcus spp. clinical isolates in Tehran, Iran

Abstract:Objectives: Enterococci have gained attention during the past decade as important nosocomial pathogens. Their increasing prevalence has been paralleled by the occurrence of multidrug-resistant and high-level aminoglycoside-resistant strains. This study isolated Enterococcus spp. from hospital samples and determined their antibiotic resistance profile, focusing on aminoglycosides, and associated resistance mechanisms. Methods: A total of 195 enterococci from hospital samples in Tehran were studied. Isolates were identified by biochemical reactions. Antimicrobial resistance was determined by disk diffusion. The vancomycin MIC for vancomycin-resistant isolates was determined by agar dilution. Detection of aminoglycoside resistance genes and intI1 and intI2 gene was performed by PCR. Results: The majority of isolates were Enterococcus faecalis (65.1%), followed by Enterococcus faecium (31.8%), Enterococcus gallinarum (2.6%) and Enterococcus solitarius (0.5%). According to antibiogram results, 42.1% of isolates were high-level gentamicin-resistant (HLGR) and 40.5% were high-level streptomycin-resistant (HLSR). There was a high prevalence of aac(6')-Ie-aph(2")-Ia (96.3%) among HLGR isolates. ant(6)-Ia and aadA were identified in 93.7% and 64.6% of HLSR isolates, respectively. aph(2'')-Ic was detected in 7 isolates (3.6%) and aph(2'')-Ib in only 4 isolates (2.1%); no isolates harboured aph(2'')-Id, intI1 or intI2. Conclusion: Multidrug resistance was higher among HLGR and HLSR isolates compared with non-HLGR and non-HLSR isolates, which may result in limited treatment options. More than 50% of isolates were susceptible to aminoglycosides, thus correct identification in clinical laboratories and administration of these antibiotics can result in decreased used of antibiotics such as vancomycin and linezolid and help to reduce the emergence of resistance to these drugs.
Characterization of integrons, extended spectrum beta lactamases and genetic diversity among uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolates from Kerman, south east of Iran

Abstract:Background and objectives: The study aimed to investigate the distribution of genes encoding integrons, extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) in E. coli isolated from UTIs, as well as the genetic diversity among the isolates. Materials and methods: E. coli isolates were recovered from the patients with UTI in Kerman Iran. Antibiotic susceptibility was done according to CLSI guidelines. The presence of ESBL genes and integrons was evaluated using PCR. PCR and sequencing were applied for the evaluation of cassette content of integrons. Genotyping of the isolates was performed by multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA). Results: Imipenem was the most effective antibiotic, while the highest resistance was observed to streptomycin. In total 40.2% of isolates were ESBL producers. Of 69 integron-positive isolates, 59 only had class I integrons, 4 only had class II integrons and 6 had both types. The most common gene cassette found within class I integrons was dfrA17-aadA5 (n=27). The E. coli isolates were divided into 16 MLVA clusters. Conclusion: The current study demonstrated the simultaneous presence of class I integrons and ESBLs involved in the resistance of UPEC isolates to antibacterial agents. Our finding also revealed that the E. coli isolates belonged to diverse clones.

Abstract:Aim: This study aimed to investigate the frequency and molecular epidemiology of class A ESBLs producing Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) isolates among patients with diarrhea. Background: Antibiotic resistance is widespread among diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) in developing countries. Information regarding Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases (ESBLs) in diarrheagenic pathogens should be considered in clinical management when an optimal treatment is required. Methods: A total of 581 stool samples were collected from patients with diarrhea in Ahvaz, Iran. PCR was used for the presence of the ipaH gene to confirm EIEC strains. The antibiotic resistance pattern of all EIEC isolates was determined by the disk diffusion method. EIEC isolates were screened for class A β-lactamase genes. Genotyping of harboring β-lactamase genes was performed by Multi-Locus VNTR Analysis (MLVA). Results: Among 13 EIEC isolates, 9 isolates (69.2%) were found ESBL positive by double-disk synergy test (DDST) and PCR. Furthermore, blaCTX-M-15 and blaCTX-M-1 genes were detected in 77.8% (n=7) and 44.5% (n=4) of the blaCTX-M-1 group. On the other hand, the blaTEM-1 gene was detected in 66.6% (n=6). None of the isolates had blaSHV-1, blaKPC, or blaGES genes. Six MLVA genotypes were identified. Conclusion: The current study revealed that the presence of ESBLs genes mediates the resistance of EIEC isolates to the majority of antibiotics in this region. The presence of ESBLs genes in different MLVA types showed that one specific clone was not responsible for spreading the EIEC isolates.

Abstract:Background Shigellae have become increasingly resistant to the extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC) worldwide and pose a great challenge to anti-infection treatment options. The purpose of this study was to determine the resistance, cephalosporin resistance mechanisms, virulence characteristic and genotype of ESC-resistant Shigella . Methods From 2008 to 2012, Shigella isolates collected from diarrhea patients were detected for antibiotics sensitivity by disk diffusion, cephalosporin resistance determinants and virulence genes using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and genotyping through enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence PCR (ERIC-PCR). Results A total of 356 Shigella isolates were gathered, and 198 (55.6%, 58 S. flexneri and 140 S. sonnei ) were resistant to ESC. All ESC-resistant isolates were susceptible to imipenem, and only 0.5% isolate was resistant to piperacillin/tazobactam. ESC-resistant S. flexneri showed high degrees of resistance to ampicillin (100%), ampicillin/sulbactam (96.6%), piperacillin (100%), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (74.1%), ciprofloxacin (74.1%), levofloxacin (53.4%), ceftazidime (58.6%) and cefepime (58.6%). ESC-resistant S. sonnei exhibited high resistance rates to ampicillin (100%), piperacillin (100%) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (96.4%). Cephalosporin resistance genes were confirmed in 184 ESC-resistant isolates. bla CTX-M types (91.8%, mainly bla CTX-M-14 , bla CTX-M-15 and bla CTX-M-57 ) were most prevalent, followed by bla OXA-30 (26.3%). Over 99.0% ESC-resistant isolates harbored virulence genes ial , ipaH , virA and sen . However, set1 were more prevalent in ESC-resistant S. flexneri isolates than in S. sonnei isolates. ERIC-PCR results showed that 2 and 3 main genotypes were detected in ESC-resistant S. flexneri and S. sonnei , respectively. Conclusion Our findings indicated that a high prevalence of ESC-resistant Shigella mediated mainly by bla CTX-M with stronger resistance and virulence, and the existence of specific clones responsible for these Shigella infection in the region studied.
Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence Factors in Clinical Isolates of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia from Hospitalized Patients in Tehran, Iran

Abstract:Stenotrophomonas maltophilia causes challenging infections in immunocompromised patients, exhibiting increasing resistance to multiple antimicrobials and possessing various virulence genes, including emerging resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. A total of 80 clinical isolates of S. maltophilia were collected from multiple hospitals in Tehran, Iran. This study conducted an analysis of antibiotic susceptibility by disc diffusion method and E-test assay, resistance and virulence gene frequencies were examined by PCR-sequencing, and multilocus sequencing typing (MLST) was performed for strain typing. Across the tested isolates, we observed notably high resistance rates for imipenem 80 (100%), meropenem 78(97.5%), and ceftazidime 72 (90%), while trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT) showed a lower resistance rate of 2 (2.5%). Minocycline and levofloxacin demonstrated the highest susceptibility rates, with 70 (87.5%) and 80 (100%), respectively. The prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes bla L1, and bla L2 was 71 (88.75%) and 76 (95%), respectively. Additionally, the PCR analysis revealed that the frequency of virulence genes (fliC, virB, papD, pilU, hlyIII, stmPr1, and stmPr2) was 78 (97.5%), 77 (96.25%), 58 (72.5%), 77 (96.2%), 76 (95%), 31 (38.75%), and 80 (100%), respectively. Resistance to SXT isolate belong to the sequence type (ST15) and exhibits allelic profiles of (10, 29, 21, 21, 32, 32, and 10). The data obtained from our investigation have indicated that SXT remains an efficacious antibiotic and also highlighted the importance of effective management, identification of resistant isolates, and typing methods to address the global prevalence of antibiotic resistance in S. maltophilia.

Abstract:Escherichia coli is one of the most important pathogens causing bloodstream infections (BSIs) throughout the world. We sought to characterize the phylogroup classification, major human sequence types (STs), antimicrobial resistance, presence of selected antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes, and genetic diversity of E. coli isolated from patients with BSIs at the University Hospital in Iran. A total of 100 E. coli bloodstream isolates were collected between December 2020 and June 2022. This study used PCR to investigate phylogenetic groups (A, B1, B2, C, D, E, and F), four major STs (ST69, ST73, ST95, and ST131), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence-associated genes (VAGs), and pathogenicity islands (PAIs). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done by disk diffusion method. Genetic diversity was analyzed by repetitive element sequence-based PCR (REP-PCR). The phylogenetic group B2 (32%) predominated, followed by phylogenetic group E (25%). ST131 (28%) was the most prevalent ST and the majority of these isolates (89.3%) were of serotype O25b. Most of E. coli isolates (75%) were categorized as multidrug resistant (MDR) with high rates of resistance (>55%) to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, cefazolin, and ceftriaxone. The most frequent ARGs were bla TEM (66%), sul1 (57%), and sul2 (51%). The most prevalent VAGs and PAIs were fimH (type 1 fimbriae adhesin; 85%), aer ( iucC ) (aerobactin; 79%), traT (serum resistance; 77%), iutA (aerobactin siderophore receptor; 69%), and PAI IV 536 (75%), respectively. The highest rate of ARGs and VAGs was observed in the ST131 isolates. REP-PCR analysis showed high diversity among the studied isolates. The high prevalence of MDR septicemic E. coli with different types of ARGs, VAGs and genotypes is an extremely worrisome sign of BSIs treatment and poses a major threat for hospitalized patients. Active surveillance, stringent prescribing policies, increasing the awareness of ARGs among clinicians and re-defining the infection control measures are essential to curb the dissemination of these strains.

Abstract:Shigellosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children, especially in developing countries. The increased extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) resistance in Shigella poses a challenge for effective treatment. To examine the antibiotic resistance and ESBL profile of Shigella isolates from children with acute diarrhea. Shigella was isolated from stool cultures from pediatric patients suffering from acute diarrhea. The isolates were identified by bacteriological tests, serotyping, and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The antimicrobial resistance was examined by disc diffusion. Phenotypic tests and PCR examined the ESBLs and CTX-M, SHV, and TEM genes. A total of 100 Shigella (10% prevalence rate) were isolated. The S. sonnei and S. dysenteries were the most prevalent species (33% and 31%, respectively), followed by S. flexneri (27%), and only 9% were S. boydii . The isolates had complete resistance (100%) to ampicillin. There was lower resistance to ciprofloxacin (24%), and no resistance to imipenem. By phenotypic tests, 54% of isolates had ESBL. By PCR, bla -CTX-M gene was the most prevalent (50%), followed by bla- TEM (48.1%). Only one isolate (1.9%) had the bla -SHV gene. The alarmingly high rates of antibiotic resistance and ESBL resistance among Shigella spp highlight the urgent need to restrict the unguided use of these drugs. Continuous monitoring of local and global antibiotic resistance patterns is required to prevent the spread of resistance.

Detection of Virulence Factors and Antibiotic Resistance among Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolates from Iran

Abstract:The current study assessed the detection of virulence genes and drug resistance among Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from Iran. During 2018 to 2020, 52 K. pneumoniae isolates were obtained from patients at Iran hospitals. By disk diffusion method, the antimicrobial susceptibility of K. pneumoniae isolates was assessed, and ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae isolates were detected by CDDT method. PCR analysis was done to detect virulence genes (iucB, iutA, iroN, kfu, allS, fimH, ybtS, mrkD, and entB); ESBL-encoding genes (blaTEM, blaPER, blaCTX-M, blaVEB, and blaSHV); and class D (blaOXA-48), class B (blaVIM, blaNDM, and blaIMP), and class A (blaKPC and blaGES) carbapenemase genes. Among all isolates, 84.6%, 13.5%, and 1.9% isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and pandrug-resistant (PDR), respectively. Also, 84.6% were ESBL-producing and 71.2%, 53.8%, 40.4%, and 9.6% of all isolates were carrying blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTX-M, and blaOXA-48 genes, respectively. Six isolates (11.5%) were positive for blaNDM gene. In contrast, no isolates were positive for the presence of blaKPC, blaIMP, and blaVIM. Virulence factor genes including iucB, iutA, iroN, kfu, allS, fimH, ybtS, mrkD, and entB were carried by 24%, 46.2%, 25%, 11.5%, 17.3%, 86.5%, 75%, 88.5%, and 100% isolates, respectively. This study evaluated the distribution and prevalence of virulence factor genes among K. pneumoniae isolates. The treatment of these infections is challenging due to the existence of particular virulence factors and the rise of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, the current study accentuates the necessity of finding new and efficient solutions for stopping the increase of antibiotic resistance.

Abstract:Introduction This study aims to analyze clinical isolates of E. coli causing septicemia across various phylogroups utilizing the PFGE method. Materials and Methods A total of 100 clinical isolates were collected. The presence of CTX - M, TEM, SHV, KPC, MBL and OXA - 48 genes was detected by PCR. Additionally, phylotyping, serotyping, and virulence-typing assay were done by PCR and PFGE methods to investigate the genetic diversity of the isolates. Results The O1 serotype and the HlyA gene were the most prevalent serotype and virulence gene, respectively. Notably, 34% of the isolates harbored SHV, TEM , and CTX-M-1 β-lactamase genes. All isolates showed resistance to amoxicillin and tetracycline, but no resistance to fosfomycin was seen. The most and least common phylotypes, according to PFGE analysis, belonged to phylogroups B2 and B1, respectively. Conclusion The data offers valuable insights into the genetic diversity and antibiotic resistance patterns of E. coli isolates responsible for septicemia.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and AmpC β-lactamases enzyme are major sources of resistance to β-lactam antibiotics especially in Enterobacteriaceae such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Increasing frequency of the co-existence of ESBLs with AmpC-β-lactamases in bacteria is a serious threat for treating bacterial infections.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the presence of AmpC and CTX-M types of β-lactamases in clinical isolates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae producing ESBLs.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Resistance to different antibiotics was determined using the standard disk diffusion method. ESBLs, MBLs and AmpC-β-lactamases were detected by the combination double disk test (CDDT) method and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to determine bla CTX -M genes in the ESBLs and AmpC positive isolates.RESULTS: The prevalence of ESBLs and AmpC-β-lactamase producer isolates was 181 (43.8%) and 133 (37.2%), respectively. The prevalence of bla CTX -M among isolates was 61 (14.7%).CONCLUSIONS: Outbreak of isolates co-expressing AmpC-β-lactamases and ESBLs can cause serious problems in the future, regarding the treatment of infections caused by these common enteric pathogens.
