Abstract:Since the mid-1980s it has been known that Byzantine Agreement can be solved with probability 1 asynchronously, even against an omniscient, computationally unbounded adversary that can adaptively corrupt up to f < n /3 parties. Moreover, the problem is insoluble with f ≥ n /3 corruptions. However, Bracha’s [13] 1984 protocol (see also Ben-Or [8]) achieved f < n /3 resilience at the cost of exponential expected latency 2 Θ ( n ) , a bound that has never been improved in this model with f = ⌊( n − 1)/3⌋ corruptions. In this paper, we prove that Byzantine Agreement in the asynchronous, full information model can be solved with probability 1 against an adaptive adversary that can corrupt f < n /3 parties, while incurring only polynomial latency with high probability . Our protocol follows an earlier polynomial latency protocol of King and Saia [33,34], which had suboptimal resilience, namely f ≈ n /10 9 [33,34]. Resilience f = ( n − 1)/3 is uniquely difficult, as this is the point at which the influence of the Byzantine and honest players are of roughly equal strength. The core technical problem we solve is to design a collective coin-flipping protocol that eventually lets us flip a coin with an unambiguous outcome. In the beginning, the influence of the Byzantine players is too powerful to overcome, and they can essentially fix the coin’s behavior at will. We guarantee that after just a polynomial number of executions of the coin-flipping protocol, either (a) the Byzantine players fail to fix the behavior of the coin (thereby ending the game) or (b) we can “blacklist” players such that the blacklisting rate for Byzantine players is at least as large as the blacklisting rate for good players. The blacklisting criterion is based on a simple statistical test of fraud detection .

Abstract:The surging interest in blockchain technology has revitalized the search for effective Byzantine consensus schemes. In particular, the blockchain community has been looking for ways to effectively integrate traditional Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) protocols into a blockchain consensus layer allowing various financial institutions to securely agree on the order of transactions. However, existing BFT protocols can only scale to tens of nodes due to their $O(n^2)$ message complexity. In this paper, we propose FastBFT, a fast and scalable BFT protocol. At the heart of FastBFT is a novel message aggregation technique that combines hardware-based trusted execution environments (TEEs) with lightweight secret sharing. Combining this technique with several other optimizations (i.e., optimistic execution, tree topology and failure detection), FastBFT achieves low latency and high throughput even for large scale networks. Via systematic analysis and experiments, we demonstrate that FastBFT has better scalability and performance than previous BFT protocols.

Efficient Signature-Free Validated Agreement

Abstract:Byzantine agreement enables n processes to agree on a common L-bit value, despite up to t > 0 arbitrary failures. A long line of work has been dedicated to improving the bit complexity of Byzantine agreement in synchrony. This has culminated in COOL, an error-free (deterministically secure against a computationally unbounded adversary) solution that achieves O(nL + n^2 logn) worst-case bit complexity (which is optimal for L >= n logn according to the Dolev-Reischuk lower bound). COOL satisfies strong unanimity: if all correct processes propose the same value, only that value can be decided. Strong unanimity is, however, not sufficient for today's state machine replication (SMR) and blockchain protocols. These systems value progress and require a decided value to always be valid, excluding default decisions (such as EMPTY) even in cases where there is no unanimity a priori. Validated Byzantine agreement satisfies this property (called external validity). Yet, the best error-free (or even signature-free) validated agreement solutions achieve only O(n^2L) bit complexity, a far cry from the Omega(nL + n^2) Dolev-Reishcuk lower bound. In this paper, we present two new synchronous algorithms for validated Byzantine agreement, HashExt and ErrorFreeExt, with different trade-offs. Both algorithms are (1) signature-free, (2) optimally resilient (tolerate up to t < n / 3 failures), and (3) early-stopping (terminate in O(f+1) rounds, where f <= t is the actual number of failures). On the one hand, HashExt uses only hashes and achieves O(nL + n^3 kappa) bit complexity, which is optimal for L >= n^2 kappa (where kappa is the size of a hash). On the other hand, ErrorFreeExt is error-free, using no cryptography whatsoever, and achieves O( (nL + n^2) logn ) bit complexity, which is near-optimal for any L.

Multi-Valued Connected Consensus: A New Perspective on Crusader Agreement and Adopt-Commit

Abstract:Algorithms to solve fault-tolerant consensus in asynchronous systems often rely on primitives such as crusader agreement, adopt-commit, and graded broadcast, which provide weaker agreement properties than consensus. Although these primitives have a similar flavor, they have been defined and implemented separately in ad hoc ways. We propose a new problem called connected consensus that has as special cases crusader agreement, adopt-commit, and graded broadcast, and generalizes them to handle multi-valued inputs. The generalization is accomplished by relating the problem to approximate agreement on graphs. We present three algorithms for multi-valued connected consensus in asynchronous message-passing systems, one tolerating crash failures and two tolerating malicious (unauthenticated Byzantine) failures. We extend the definition of binding, a desirable property recently identified as supporting binary consensus algorithms that are correct against adaptive adversaries, to the multi-valued input case and show that all our algorithms satisfy the property. Our crash-resilient algorithm has failure-resilience and time complexity that we show are optimal. When restricted to the case of binary inputs, the algorithm has improved time complexity over prior algorithms. Our two algorithms for malicious failures trade off failure resilience and time complexity. The first algorithm has time complexity that we prove is optimal but worse failure-resilience, while the second has failure-resilience that we prove is optimal but worse time complexity. When restricted to the case of binary inputs, the time complexity (as well as resilience) of the second algorithm matches that of prior algorithms.

Abstract:Given a system with $n > 3t + 1$ processes, where $t$ is the tolerated number of faulty ones, we present a fast asynchronous Byzantine agreement protocol that can reach agreement in $O(t)$ expected running time. This improves the $O(n^2)$ expected running time of Abraham, Dolev, and Halpern [PODC 2008]. Furthermore, if $n = (3 + \varepsilon) t$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$, our protocol can reach agreement in $O (1 / \varepsilon)$ expected running time. This improves the result of Feldman and Micali [STOC 1988] (with constant expected running time when $n > 4 t$).
On the Hardness of Decentralized Multi-Agent Policy Evaluation under Byzantine Attacks

Abstract:In this paper, we study a fully-decentralized multi-agent policy evaluation problem, which is an important sub-problem in cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning, in the presence of up to $f$ faulty agents. In particular, we focus on the so-called Byzantine faulty model with model poisoning setting. In general, policy evaluation is to evaluate the value function of any given policy. In cooperative multi-agent system, the system-wide rewards are usually modeled as the uniform average of rewards from all agents. We investigate the multi-agent policy evaluation problem in the presence of Byzantine agents, particularly in the setting of heterogeneous local rewards. Ideally, the goal of the agents is to evaluate the accumulated system-wide rewards, which are uniform average of rewards of the normal agents for a given policy. It means that all agents agree upon common values (the consensus part) and furthermore, the consensus values are the value functions (the convergence part). However, we prove that this goal is not achievable. Instead, we consider a relaxed version of the problem, where the goal of the agents is to evaluate accumulated system-wide reward, which is an appropriately weighted average reward of the normal agents. We further prove that there is no correct algorithm that can guarantee that the total number of positive weights exceeds $|\mathcal{N}|-f $, where $|\mathcal{N}|$ is the number of normal agents. Towards the end, we propose a Byzantine-tolerant decentralized temporal difference algorithm that can guarantee asymptotic consensus under scalar function approximation. We then empirically test the effective of the proposed algorithm.

Toward Optimal-Complexity Hash-Based Asynchronous MVBA with Optimal Resilience

Abstract:Multi-valued validated Byzantine agreement (MVBA), a fundamental primitive of distributed computing, enables n processes to agree on a valid L-bit value, despite t faulty processes behaving arbitrarily. Among hash-based protocols for the asynchronous setting with adaptive faults, the state-of-the-art HMVBA protocol has optimal O(1) time complexity and near-optimal O(n L + n^2 kappa log n) bit complexity, but tolerates only t < n/5 faults. We present REDUCER, an MVBA protocol that matches HMVBA's time and bit complexity and improves resilience to t < n/4. Like HMVBA, REDUCER relies solely on collision-resistant hash functions. Toward optimal one-third resilience, we also propose REDUCER++, an MVBA protocol with further improved t < (1/3 - epsilon)n resilience, for any fixed epsilon > 0, assuming hash functions modeled as random oracles. Time and bit complexity of REDUCER++ remain constant and quasi-quadratic, respectively, with constants depending on epsilon.

Strong Byzantine Agreement with Adaptive Word Complexity

Abstract:The strong Byzantine agreement (SBA) problem is defined among n processes, out of which t < n can be faulty and behave arbitrarily. SBA allows correct (non-faulty) processes to agree on a common value. Moreover, if all correct processes have proposed the same value, only that value can be agreed upon. It has been known for a long time that any solution to the SBA problem incurs quadratic worst-case word complexity; additionally, the bound was known to be tight. However, no existing protocol achieves adaptive word complexity, where the number of exchanged words depends on the actual number of faults, and not on the upper bound. Therefore, it is still unknown whether SBA with adaptive word complexity exists. This paper answers the question in the affirmative. Namely, we introduce STRONG, a synchronous protocol that solves SBA among n = (2 + Omega(1))t + 1 processes and achieves adaptive word complexity. We show that the fundamental challenge of adaptive SBA lies in efficiently solving certification, the problem of obtaining a constant-sized, locally-verifiable proof that a value can safely be decided.

Abstract:We provide the first protocol that solves Byzantine agreement with optimal early stopping ($\min\{f+2,t+1\}$ rounds) and optimal resilience ($n>3t$) using polynomial message size and computation. All previous approaches obtained sub-optimal results and used resolve rules that looked only at the immediate children in the EIG (\emph{Exponential Information Gathering}) tree. At the heart of our solution are new resolve rules that look at multiple layers of the EIG tree.

Abstract:Byzantine agreement, the underlying core of blockchain, aims to make every node in a decentralized network reach consensus. Classical Byzantine agreements unavoidably face two major problems. One is $1/3$ fault-tolerance bound, which means that the system to tolerate $f$ malicious players requires at least $3f+1$ players. The other is the security loopholes from its classical cryptography methods. Here, we propose a Byzantine agreement framework with unconditional security to break this bound with nearly $1/2$ fault tolerance due to multiparty correlation provided by quantum digital signatures. \textcolor{black}{It is intriguing that quantum entanglement is not necessary to break the $1/3$ fault-tolerance bound, and we show that weaker correlation, such as asymmetric relationship of quantum digital signature, can also work.} Our work strictly obeys two Byzantine conditions and can be extended to any number of players without requirements for multiparticle entanglement. We experimentally demonstrate three-party and five-party consensus for a digital ledger. Our work indicates the quantum advantage in terms of consensus problems and suggests an important avenue for quantum blockchain and quantum consensus networks.

Prioritized-MVBA: A New Approach to Design an Optimal Asynchronous Byzantine Agreement Protocol

Abstract:The multi-valued byzantine agreement protocol (MVBA) in the authenticated setting has been widely used as a core to design atomic broadcast and fault-tolerant state machine replication protocols in asynchronous networks. Originating from the seminal work of Cachin et al. \cite{CACHIN01}, subsequent research endeavors have sought to optimize protocol efficiency in terms of communication complexity. Notable advancements following Cachin's contributions include: i) VABA \cite{BYZ17}, requiring multiple protocol instances to achieve agreement on a party's request, and ii) Dumbo-MVBA \cite{LU20}, employing a cryptographic asynchronous dispersal and recovery methods to manage communication complexity alongside additional computational and communication rounds overheads. Our objective is to devise an MVBA protocol that achieves agreement in each instance without extra computation and communication rounds while maintaining the optimal metrics. Central to our design approach is the introduction of the committee in the classic MVBA protocol, wherein a randomly selected subset of ($f+1$, where $n=3f+1$) parties get selected and simultaneously broadcast their requests (transactions) to gather verifiable proofs. Successive distributions of these proofs afford us the necessary properties to employ the asynchronous binary Byzantine agreement (ABBA) protocol for reaching an agreement on a selected party's requests. By integrating the committee and ABBA protocols, we devise the optimal MVBA protocol, termed pMVBA (Prioritized-MVBA). This protocol exhibits resilience to tolerate up to $\lfloor \frac{n}{3}\rfloor$ Byzantine failures, with an expected runtime of $O(1)$, optimal message complexity of $O(n^2)$, and optimal communication complexity $O((l+\lambda)n^2)$ .

Abstract:We consider Byzantine-robust distributed learning with asynchronous participation of clients at a certain probability, where Byzantine clients can send malicious messages to the server. Instead of relying on traditional robust aggregation rules, such as Krum and Median, that can only tolerate a limited proportion of Byzantine clients, we propose an asynchronous Byzantine-robust stochastic aggregation method that employs regularization-based techniques to mitigate Byzantine attacks, and adopts variance-reduced techniques to eliminate the effect of stochastic noise of gradient sampling. Leveraging a properly designed Lyapunov function, we show that the proposed algorithm converges linearly to an error ball that is independent of stochastic gradient variance. Extensive experiments are conducted to show its efficacy in dealing with Byzantine attacks compared to the existing counterparts.
Asynchronous Approximate Byzantine Consensus: A Multi-hop Relay Method and Tight Graph Conditions

Abstract:We study a multi-agent resilient consensus problem, where some agents are of the Byzantine type and try to prevent the normal ones from reaching consensus. In our setting, normal agents communicate with each other asynchronously over multi-hop relay channels with delays. To solve this asynchronous Byzantine consensus problem, we develop the multi-hop weighted mean subsequence reduced (MW-MSR) algorithm. The main contribution is that we characterize a tight graph condition for our algorithm to achieve Byzantine consensus, which is expressed in the novel notion of strictly robust graphs. We show that the multi-hop communication is effective for enhancing the network's resilience against Byzantine agents. As a result, we also obtain novel conditions for resilient consensus under the malicious attack model, which are tighter than those known in the literature. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can be viewed as a generalization of the conventional flooding-based algorithms, with less computational complexity. Lastly, we provide numerical examples to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:It is well known that a trusted setup allows one to solve the Byzantine agreement problem in the presence of $t<n/2$ corruptions, bypassing the setup-free $t<n/3$ barrier. Alas, the overwhelming majority of protocols in the literature have the caveat that their security crucially hinges on the security of the cryptography and setup, to the point where if the cryptography is broken, even a single corrupted party can violate the security of the protocol. Thus these protocols provide higher corruption resilience ($n/2$ instead of $n/3$) for the price of increased assumptions. Is this trade-off necessary? We further the study of crypto-agnostic Byzantine agreement among $n$ parties that answers this question in the negative. Specifically, let $t_s$ and $t_i$ denote two parameters such that (1) $2t_i + t_s < n$, and (2) $t_i \leq t_s < n/2$. Crypto-agnostic Byzantine agreement ensures agreement among honest parties if (1) the adversary is computationally bounded and corrupts up to $t_s$ parties, or (2) the adversary is computationally unbounded and corrupts up to $t_i$ parties, and is moreover given all secrets of all parties established during the setup. We propose a compiler that transforms any pair of resilience-optimal Byzantine agreement protocols in the authenticated and information-theoretic setting into one that is crypto-agnostic. Our compiler has several attractive qualities, including using only $O(\lambda n^2)$ bits over the two underlying Byzantine agreement protocols, and preserving round and communication complexity in the authenticated setting. In particular, our results improve the state-of-the-art in bit complexity by at least two factors of $n$ and provide either early stopping (deterministic) or expected constant round complexity (randomized). We therefore provide fallback security for authenticated Byzantine agreement for free for $t_i \leq n/4$.

Abstract:We study the Byzantine lattice agreement (BLA) problem in asynchronous distributed message passing systems. In the BLA problem, each process proposes a value from a join semi-lattice and needs to output a value also in the lattice such that all output values of correct processes lie on a chain despite the presence of Byzantine processes. We present an algorithm for this problem with round complexity of $O(\log f)$ which tolerates $f < \frac{n}{5}$ Byzantine failures in the asynchronous setting without digital signatures, where $n$ is the number of processes. We also show how this algorithm can be modified to work in the authenticated setting (i.e., with digital signatures) to tolerate $f < \frac{n}{3}$ Byzantine failures.

Partial Synchrony for Free? New Upper Bounds for Byzantine Agreement

Abstract:Byzantine agreement allows n processes to decide on a common value, in spite of arbitrary failures. The seminal Dolev-Reischuk bound states that any deterministic solution to Byzantine agreement exchanges Omega(n^2) bits. In synchronous networks, solutions with optimal O(n^2) bit complexity, optimal fault tolerance, and no cryptography have been established for over three decades. However, these solutions lack robustness under adverse network conditions. Therefore, research has increasingly focused on Byzantine agreement for partially synchronous networks. Numerous solutions have been proposed for the partially synchronous setting. However, these solutions are notoriously hard to prove correct, and the most efficient cryptography-free algorithms still require O(n^3) exchanged bits in the worst case. In this paper, we introduce Oper, the first generic transformation of deterministic Byzantine agreement algorithms from synchrony to partial synchrony. Oper requires no cryptography, is optimally resilient (n >= 3t+1, where t is the maximum number of failures), and preserves the worst-case per-process bit complexity of the transformed synchronous algorithm. Leveraging Oper, we present the first partially synchronous Byzantine agreement algorithm that (1) achieves optimal O(n^2) bit complexity, (2) requires no cryptography, and (3) is optimally resilient (n >= 3t+1), thus showing that the Dolev-Reischuk bound is tight even in partial synchrony. Moreover, we adapt Oper for long values and obtain several new partially synchronous algorithms with improved complexity and weaker (or completely absent) cryptographic assumptions.
