Abstract:Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) are photochromic molecules derived from furfural that exhibit reversible isomerization under visible light and thermal stimuli. Achieving efficient and rapid reversible isomerization of DASAs within solid matrices under mild conditions is crucial for their practical application. However, such examples remain scarce, posing significant challenges related to the selection of solid matrices and the molecular design of DASAs to overcome the constraints imposed by solid-state conditions. Here, we report, for the first time, that a DASA (DASA-1) exhibits highly efficient and rapid reversible isomerization within sustainable nano/micro capsules composed of a polymethylmethacrylate/lauric–stearic acid eutectic mixture (PMMA/L–SEM, bio-content = 57%). Specifically, the forward and backward isomerization of DASA-1 in sustainable PMMA/L–SEM capsules achieve 84% (620 nm, 25 °C) and 90% (50 °C) within a few minutes, respectively. By leveraging these capsules and the encapsulation technique, the application of these capsules in producing a color-rich, photopatternable, and erasable paper is demonstrated. Lastly, considering the zwitterionic properties, we preliminarily conclude that achieving highly efficient reversible isomerization within our system requires accounting for the zwitterionic nature of DASAs, with a lower zwitterionic character being preferable. This work provides a novel and sustainable solid matrix for the efficient and rapid reversible isomerization of DASAs under mild conditions, potentially guiding the design of efficient solid-state DASA systems and stimulating further applications of DASAs in various fields.
