Abstract:Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of risk factors related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Given that early identification of MetS might decrease CVD risk, it is imperative to establish a simple and cost-effective method to identify individuals at risk of MetS. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between several atherogenic indices (including AIP, TyG index, non-HDL-C, LDL-c/HDL-c, and TC/HDL-c) and MetS, and to assess the ability of these indices to predict MetS.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to evaluate the ability of several atherosclerotic indices (including AIP, TyG index, non - HDL - C, LDL - c/HDL - c and TC/HDL - c) in predicting metabolic syndrome (MetS), and to determine the optimal cut - off values of these indices to identify individuals with metabolic syndrome in the Iranian Arab population. The research background points out that metabolic syndrome is related to risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and early identification of metabolic syndrome may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it is particularly important to establish a simple and cost - effective method to identify individuals at high risk of metabolic syndrome. By comparing the predictive abilities of these atherosclerotic indices, the study aims to provide an effective screening tool in clinical practice, especially for the Iranian Arab population. Specifically, the study analyzed the baseline data of 9,809 participants in the Hoveyzeh Cohort Study (HCS), used the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) to analyze the discriminatory ability of these atherosclerotic indices, and evaluated the relationship between these indices and metabolic syndrome through logistic regression analysis. The research results show that the TyG index exhibits the highest area under the curve (AUC) in both men and women, which are 0.79 and 0.85 respectively, followed by the AIP index. This indicates that the TyG index has high accuracy and reliability in predicting metabolic syndrome, especially in the Iranian Arab population.
