Abstract:HCl-assisted propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is an attractive route for propene production with good selectivity. In this study, the doping of CeO 2 with different transition metals, including V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, and Cu, in the presence of HCl was investigated for PDH. The dopants have a pronounced effect on the electronic structure of pristine ceria that significantly alters the catalytic capabilities. The calculations indicate the spontaneous dissociation of HCl on all surfaces with a facile abstraction of the first hydrogen atom except on V- and Mn-doped surfaces. The lowest energy barrier of 0.50 and 0.51eV was found for Pd- and Ni-doped CeO 2 surfaces. The surface oxygen is responsible for hydrogen abstraction, and its activity is described by the p-band center. Microkinetics simulation is performed on all doped surfaces. The increase in the turnover frequency (TOF) is directly linked with the partial pressure of propane. The adsorption energy of reactants aligned with the observed performance. The reaction follows first-order kinetics to C 3 H 8 . Furthermore, on all surfaces, the formation of C 3 H 7 is found as the rate-determining step confirmed by the degree of rate control (DRC) analysis. This study provides a decisive description of catalyst modification for HCl-assisted PDH.

Rationalizing kinetic behaviors of isolated boron sites catalyzed oxidative dehydrogenation of propane

Abstract:Boron-based catalysts exhibit high alkene selectivity in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) but the mechanistic understanding remains incomplete. In this work, we show that the hydroxylation of framework boron species via steaming not only enhances the ODHP rate on both B-MFI and B-BEA, but also impacts the kinetics of the reaction. The altered activity, propane reaction order and the activation energy could be attributed to the hydrolysis of framework [B(OSi≡)3] unit to [B(OSi≡)3-x(OH···O(H)Si≡)x] (x = 1, 2, "···" represents hydrogen bonding). DFT calculations confirm that hydroxylated framework boron sites could stabilize radical species, e.g., hydroperoxyl radical, further facilitating the gas-phase radical mechanism. Variations in the contributions from gas-phase radical mechanisms in ODHP lead to the linear correlation between activation enthalpy and entropy on borosilicate zeolites. Insights gained in this work offer a general mechanistic framework to rationalize the kinetic behavior of the ODHP on boron-based catalysts.

Abstract:Engineering surface oxygen species to tune catalytic selectivity of oxides is an emerging hot topic in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we demonstrate that HCl treatment can controllably chlorinate CeO2 at surface oxygen vacancies and tightly regulate the content of surface oxygen vacancies (O-s). Structure-property studies reveal that the decreased ratio of O-s quasi-linearly promotes the C3H6 selectivity in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP).

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of propane as a representative molecule of light hydrocarbons (LHs) is of special interest for energy utilization and pollution abatement but is challengeable due to its stable C–H bonds. Here, Ru supported on porous and defect-rich CeO2 nanosheets catalysts were prepared and investigated for catalytic oxidation of propane, and the Ru/CeO2 catalyst using chlorine-free Ru precursor (RuN/CeNS) presented an ultra-high activity with complete conversion at 150 °C. A series of well-designed experiments and characterizations illustrated that the high-density and uniform Ru-O-Ce interfaces were determinant for propane oxidation due to the possible asymmetric bridged adsorption and activation. The presence of chlorine species suppressed the dispersion of RuOx species and the formation of Ru-O-Ce interfaces, which also accelerated the sintering of CeO2 and Ru-O-Ce interfaces at high temperatures. This work highlighted the experimental insights into the active interfacial sites of ultra-active Ru/CeO2 for propane oxidation. It contributed to an in-depth understanding of the activation of C–H bonds in LHs and the preparation of supported noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:CO 2 ‐oxidative dehydrogenation of propane ( CO 2 ‐ODHP ) provides a promising route for propylene production. Sufficient propane conversion and propylene selectivity remain a great challenge due to the difficulty in activating inert propane and CO 2 simultaneously. Here, we reported a Sn doped CeO 2 supported Pt (Pt/Sn‐CeO 2 ) catalyst in CO 2 ‐ODHP reaction. Sn doping appears to kill two birds with one stone for propane and CO 2 activation. On the one side, it increases the electron density of Pt species via a formation of PtSn alloy, promoting propane adsorption and C–H bond cleavage. On the other side, it improves concentrations of oxygen vacancy in CeO 2 support, facilitating CO 2 dissociation. A higher propylene selectivity (63.9% vs 22.3%) was obtained on 0.1 wt% Pt/1.0 wt% Sn‐CeO 2 than that on 0.1 wt% Pt/CeO 2 with a comparable propane conversion (15.1% vs 14.3%) at 550 o C after 240 min on stream. This work provides a reference for designing efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Using CO2 as a mild oxidizing agent in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) presents an attractive pathway for the generation of propene while maintaining high selectivity. Cr2O3 is one of the most important catalysts used for the CO2-assisted PDH process. In this study, the doping of Cr2O3 with single atoms such as Ge, Ir, Ni, Sn, Zn, and Zr was used for the PDH process. The introduction of dopants significantly modifies the electronic structure of pristine Cr2O3, leading to substantial alterations in its catalytic capabilities. The dehydrogenation reactions were explored both in the absence and presence of CO2. The addition of CO2 introduces two distinct pathways for PDH. On physisorbed CO2 surfaces, Ge and Ni-Cr2O3 enhance dehydrogenation. On the dissociated surface, the CO* and O* species actively participate in the reaction. All doped surfaces exhibit low energy barriers for dehydrogenation, except undoped Cr2O3 on dissociated CO2 surfaces. The Ni-Cr2O3 surface emerges as the most active surface for dehydrogenation of propane in all scenarios. Additionally, the catalytic surface is re-oxidized through H2 release, and doped surfaces facilitate coke removal via the reverse Boudouard reaction more efficiently than undoped Cr2O3. Microkinetics simulations identify the removal of the first H-atom as the rate-determining step. CO2 reduces the apparent activation energy, directly impacting C3H8 conversion and C3H6 formation. This study offers a decisive description of Cr2O3 modification for the CO2-assisted PDH process.

Abstract:Chromium oxide is the conventional catalyst for propane direct dehydrogenation. However, the active site and reaction mechanism are still remaining unresolved due to the complicated valence of chromium and co-exists of several active sites. In this work, DFT calculations are performed to reveal the nature of active center and reaction mechanism for the supported chromium catalyst on silica. Three valences of chromium including Cr3+, Cr5+, and Cr6+ are examined to give a unbiased survey of reactivity. The reaction pathway and C–H activation are carefully examined. Moreover, a detailed analysis of active site regeneration is performed. The reactivities of different oxygen groups attached to Cr including terminal, bridge, and OH group are evaluated at the same footing. Furthermore, the calculations also reveal the intrinsic catalytic properties of chromium which show comparable abilities with oxygen groups. The influence from OH group on support is also evaluated. The comparisons of different reaction pathway give useful indication on the possible reaction mechanism. In the end, the most favorable active site is identified. The current work not only deepen the understanding of catalytic properties of supported chromium catalyst but also supply the doable optimization methods for further improvements.

Abstract:In order to investigate the reaction pathway of propane total oxidation on Pt/CeO2–ZrO2 (Pt/CZ) catalyst and the promoting effect of Pt, CeO2–ZrO2 (CZ) mixed oxides were prepared by sol–gel method and Pt was impregnated. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, BET, TPR, in situ FTIR spectroscopy of propane adsorption/transformation/desorption and propane catalytic oxidation activity experiments. The propane oxidation activity is greatly enhanced by the addition of Pt while there is no obvious structure change based on XRD and BET. It is shown by the adsorption experiments that at 250°C, propane can react with oxygen-containing species; there is obvious destruction of CeO bonds, from which oxygen consumption can be inferred, on both CZ and Pt/CZ catalysts, as well as the generation of some bicarbonate ions on CZ and carbonate on Pt/CZ. Moreover, there are more δ(CH) and δ(CH2) species on CZ than Pt/CZ. When oxygen was introduced into the reactor, the CeO bonds re-formed immediately on Pt/CZ but not on CZ. The propane desorption results show that the intermediate products and desorption process are almost the same on both catalysts. Furthermore, some bidentate carbonate has been detected on both catalysts during the total oxidation process, and it is thought to be the intermediate product of the reaction. Based on the IR results, a possible propane oxidation pathway and the role of Pt as well as the possible electrochemical mechanism have been proposed.

Abstract:The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) is an attractive reaction for increasing the production of light olefins due to its favorable thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics. However, the overoxidation of propene to thermodynamically favored COx leads to a trade-off between propane conversion and propene selectivity, limiting the optimization of the overall catalytic performance. Here we show that photo-thermal synergistic catalysis driven by a spherical superstructure of semiconducting boron carbon nitride nanosheets (SS-BCNNSs) breaks the conversion-selectivity trade-off, resulting in a remarkable enhancement of propane conversion, along with a well-maintained selectivity for propene under mild conditions. The mechanism study shows that the introduction of light irradiation during the ODHP process could change the reaction order, activate the reactants, and reduce the activation energy for ODHP. DFT calculations reveal that the photogenerated electrons provided by SS-BCNNSs promote oxygen adsorption and significantly reduce the energy barrier for generating active B-O center dot species, which in turn produces more active sites and enhances the reactivity.
Photothermal catalytic CO2 oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propylene over BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocatalysts

Abstract:CO2 oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (CO2-ODHP) is a strategy of "two birds with one stone" to synthesize propylene and utilize CO2. However, the reaction is always conducted at high temperatures (> 550 °C). In the present work, we first conducted the reaction at 270 °C under photothermal conditions over several BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocatalysts. Among them, a BiOI nanosheet catalyst exhibited the highest C3H6 formation activity of 282.6 μmol·gcat-1·h-1 with 89% selectivity. The lattice oxygen species on the catalyst could catalyze the propane dehydrogenation to propylene, and simultaneously, oxygen vacancies are formed. The oxygen vacancies are responsible for the CO2 reduction to CO. In addition, the catalyst is facet-dependent, and the (001) facets are more active than the (110). The present work successfully verifies the feasibility of photothermal catalytic CO2-ODHP over the BiOI nanosheets and also provides a new insight to construct other facet-dependent dual-functional redox catalysts.
Nonoxidative propane dehydrogenation by isolated Co2+ in BEA zeolite: Dealumination-determined key steps of propane C H activation and propylene desorption

Abstract:With BEA (Si/Al = 20) zeolite and dealuminated Si-BEA as supports, the non-noble metal Co catalysts are prepared by vacuum impregnation method to study the correlation between the catalyst structure and catalytic performance in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction . The optimal 0.5 wt% Co@Si-BEA catalyst exhibits over 93 % selectivity to propylene, high single-pass yield and great regeneration stability in the recycling PDH reactions at 590 °C. The isolated Co2+ cations are anchored in the micropores of Si-BEA zeolites through interacting with the silanol groups generated by dealumination treatment, and serve as the catalytically active sites to selectively activate the CH bonds of propane rather than dissociate the CC bonds. Furthermore, Co@Si-BEA catalyst adsorbs propylene in a favorable configuration, leading to desired adsorption features with respect to less amount and weaker strength in comparison with that on non-dealuminated Co@BEA catalyst. Therefore, the facile propylene desorption can be achieved on Co@Si-BEA catalyst, which is responsible for its high propylene selectivity, activity, and long-term stability in PDH reaction. By contrast, Co@BEA catalyst with higher density of surface Brønsted acid sites, facing with severe issues of propane CC bond scission, strong propylene adsorption and coke deposition-caused deactivation.

Abstract:Ce-doped LaBO3 (Ce0.05La0.95BO3) and a corresponding incorporation with 3d transition metals (TMs) were prepared and evaluated for eliminating propane. Our results showed the catalytic activity toward propane combustion has a close relationship with the loaded TMs, which promoted oxygen vacancies density and further enhanced the reduction and acidity of this material. This eventually led to 90% propane conversion at 718 K for a Cu-loaded Ce0.05La0.95BO3 catalyst. During 10 h of catalytic propane oxidation, the propane-elimination rate was maintained very well, with no degradation of the catalyst.

Abstract:Boron oxide-based catalysts have been shown to be both active and selective for driving the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) without the use of metal promoters. However, this reaction occurs at temperatures where boron oxide melts, challenging experimental identification of the molecular structures within the boron oxide phase under reaction conditions and thus hindering the understanding of its active sites and reaction mechanism(s). By combining density functional theory computations, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, in situ Raman characterization, and microkinetic modeling, we propose that dimerized di-coordinated boron sites (>B–B<)dynamically formed in liquid boron oxideare the active species for O2 activation under reaction conditions. The resulting peroxy-like species (>B–O–O–B<) is then responsible for propane activation but is a moderate oxidant for ODHP and thus inert to propene. These peroxy-like structures rapidly activate propane, homolytically cleaving the >B–O–O–B< bond, producing a propyl radical and a >B–O• dangling bond. These > B–O• originate from the >B–O–O–B< sites as well as the liquid B2O3 structure itself and play a critical role in the abstraction of H atoms from propane and propyl. In fact, microkinetic modeling reveals that the formation of adsorbed C3H7* radicals is the main rate-controlling step due to the highly endergonic adsorption of propane into the system. Otherwise, the only activated processes were found to be the dehydration steps that lead to water formation, which exhibit an intriguing dependence on the concentration of surface hydroxyl species. These findings provide significant insights into the ODHP mechanisms on boron-based catalysts and emphasize the importance of understanding the liquid nature of the oxide to account for its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) presents a promising alternative to naphtha steam cracking processes for propene production. However, the current commercial catalysts are plagued by the toxicity of Cr (VI) and the exorbitant cost of Pt. We have developed an efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective catalyst (CoO x @MFI) in which reduction-resistant CoO x clusters are embedded in situ into the zeolite framework. This catalyst exhibits good catalytic performances (59.0% propane conversion and 93.0% propene selectivity) in PDH reactions, surpassing most Co-based catalysts and competing with Pt-based ones. Crucially, both in situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the MFI zeolite-stabilized Co–O moieties are highly favorable for C–H bond activation via an O atom as a Lewis base, which can attach to an H atom and generate [CoOH]+ intermediate with remarkable efficiency.

Abstract:The on-purpose direct propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has received extensive attention to meet the ever-increasing demand of propylene. In this work, by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we systematically studied the intrinsic coordinating effect of Fe single-atom catalysts in PDH. Interestingly, the N and P dual-coordinated single Fe (Fe-N3P-C) significantly outperform the Fe-N4-C site in catalysis and exhibit desired activity and selectivity at industrial PDH temperatures. The mechanistic origin of different performance on Fe-N3P-C and Fe-N4-C has been ascribed to the geometric effect. To be specific, the in-plane configuration of Fe-N4 site exhibits low H affinity, which results in poor activity in C-H bond activations. By contrast, the out-of-plane structure of Fe-N3P-C site exhibits moderate H affinity, which not only promote the C-H bond scission but also offer a platform for obtaining appropriate H diffusion rate which ensures the high selectivity of propylene and the regeneration of catalysts. This work demonstrates promising applications of dual-coordinated single-atom catalysts for highly selective propane dehydrogenation.

Abstract:During propane dehydrogenation in the CO2 atmosphere (PDH-CO2), Fe-based catalysts deactivate due to undue reduction of active FeOx to Fe or FeCx and thus engender carbon deposits. Herein, CoFeZr@Silicalite-1 (S-1) with the embedment of Co, Fe, and Zr nanostructures in S-1 was constructed and exhibited stable catalysis for the PDH-CO2 reaction at 550 degrees C with high selectivity to propylene. 0.5CoFeZr@S-1 persisted a propylene selectivity of 97% and a propane conversion of 23% over a time-on-stream of 120 h. X-ray diffraction, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen characterization confirmed the interactions between Co, Fe, and Zr, due to their incorporation into the S-1 framework. On the one hand, the interconversion of the formed Co2+-O tetrahedron and Co2+-O octahedron during the reaction promoted electron transfer between Fe3+ and Fe2+ of the FeOx species, stabilizing the active phase and the catalytic cycle. On the other hand, the resulting medium-strong base sites improved C3H8 conversion and diminished carbon deposition by exerting the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) and the reverse Boudouard reactions, respectively. Moreover, the HCOO*- and CH3O*-mediated pathway for this RWGS-propelled PDH was proposed based on in situ DRIFTS characterization.
Oxidative Co-Dehydrogenation of Ethane and Propane over H-Bn As an Effective Means for C–H Bond Activation and Mechanistic Investigations

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a highly selective catalyst for oxidative dehydrogenation of light alkanes to produce the corresponding alkenes. Despite intense recent research effort, many aspects of the reaction mechanism, such as the observed supra-linear reaction order of alkanes, remain unresolved. In this work, we show that the introduction of a low concentration of propane in the feed of ethane oxidative dehydrogenation is able to enhance the C2H6 conversion by 47%, indicating a shared reaction intermediate in the activation of ethane and propane. The higher activity of propane makes it the dominant radical generator in the oxidative co-dehydrogenation of ethane and propane (ODEP). This unique feature of the ODEP renders propane an effective probe molecule to deconvolute the two roles of alkanes in the dehydrogenation chemistry, i.e., radical generator and substrate. Kinetic studies indicate that both the radical generation and the dehydrogenation pathways exhibit a first order kinetics toward the alkane partial pressure, leading to the observed second order kinetics of the overall oxidative dehydrogenation rate. With the steady-state approximation, a radical chain reaction mechanism capable of rationalizing observed reaction behaviors is proposed based on these insights. This work demonstrates the potential of ODEP as a strategy of both activating light alkanes in oxidative dehydrogenation on BN and mechanistic investigations.
Unraveling the role of single-atom metal dopant over CeO2 catalyst in tuning catalytic performance of ethane oxidative dehydrogenation

Abstract:Single-atom metal doped CeO2 (M1@CeO2) catalysts have exhibited better catalytic performance in methane and propane dehydrogenation, which may be applied to ethane dehydrogenation, revealing structure-activity relationship of M1@CeO2 catalysts is of great importance. In this work, DFT + U calculations together with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations were implemented to investigate the oxidative dehydrogenation stage (ODH) in ethane chemical looping-oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) over thirteen types of M1@CeO2 catalysts (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ga, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, In, Ir and Pt). The results show that the doped single-atom metal and its adjacent O atoms act as active sites over four catalysts Rh, Pd, Ir and Pt doped CeO2, while only O atoms act as active sites over other nine catalysts M1@CeO2. Rh1@CeO2 was screened out to perform higher C2H4(g) selectivity of 98.8 % and C2H4(g) formation activity of 8.72×103 s−1 site−1 at 823.15 K with C2H6(g) partial pressure <0.2 bar, which is superior to the previously reported catalysts Pt, Pt3Sn, Pt3Ir, Ni3Mo, Co/g-C3N4 and Rh/ZrO2, and so on. A quantitative and quick descriptor, the binding strength of C2H5* intermediate is proposed to evaluate C2H4(g) formation activity. This study unravels the role of doped single-atom metal over CeO2 catalyst and help rationally design high-efficiency alkane dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) catalyst has recently been reported to be highly selective in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) for olefin production. In addition to propene, ethylene also forms with much higher overall selectivities to C2-products than to C1-products. In this work, we report that the reaction pathways over the h-BN catalyst are different from the V-based catalysts in ODHP. Oxidative coupling reaction of methyl, an intermediate from the cleavage of C─C bond of propane, contributes to the high selectivities to C2-products, leading to more C2-products than C1-products over the h-BN catalyst. This work not only provides insight into the reaction mechanisms involved in ODHP over the boron-based catalysts but also sheds light on the selective oxidation of alkanes such as direct upgrading of methane via oxidative upgrading to ethylene or CH x O y on boron-based catalysts.
