Abstract:Compton backscatter imaging (CBI) has the advantage in the inspection of large structures because the X-ray source and the detector can be set on the same side. Limited by the energy resolution of detectors and the requirement of monoenergetic sources, there is little activity in the field of energy-analysed CBI. To improve the efficiency and accuracy of energy-analysed CBI, this study proposed a novel deep learning-based reconstruction method. An end-to-end neural network is used to learn the relationship between the detector data with spectral information and the electron density along the incident direction, enabling fast and high-accuracy three-dimensional CBI reconstructions. Monte Carlo simulations of an uncollimated CBI system with an X-ray tube and a scintillator detector were conducted to build the dataset for network training. In addition, comparative experiments were conducted on the input dimension of the network. The results indicate that the resolution of the proposed method is about 3 mm and the proposed method can rapidly obtain high-precision images compared to collimation-based CBI. For the input dimension, there is an optimal value for the number of input channels for specific performance and measurement time. Besides, the imaging of carbon and aluminium is also compared and discussed.
