Abstract:The Malabar ricefish Oryzias setnai is an adrianichthyid species endemic to the western coastal plains of India. Despite its divergence from the other adrianichthyids in the late Mesozoic, no closely related species are known. We collected O. setnai samples from throughout almost their entire geographic range and examined their mitochondrial cyt b sequences. Haplotype network and phylogenetic analyses revealed that the O. setnai sequences were clearly separated into northern and southern haplotypes. There was no site where the northern and southern haplotypes overlapped, which indicated that reproductive isolation may exist between the northern and southern populations. However, the genetic difference between them was rather small ( p -distance = 2.8%). Whether the O. setnai northern and southern populations represent cryptic species must be determined by examining nuclear genes in the future.
