Abstract:Silica (SiO2) glass, an essential material in human civilization, possesses excellent formability near its glass-transition temperature (Tg > 1100 °C). However, bulk SiO2 glass is very brittle at room temperature. Here we show a surprising brittle-to-ductile transition of SiO2 glass nanofibers at room temperature as its diameter reduces below 18 nm, accompanied by ultrahigh fracture strength. Large tensile plastic elongation up to 18% can be achieved at low strain rate. The unexpected ductility is due to a free surface affected zone in the nanofibers, with enhanced ionic mobility compared to the bulk that improves ductility by producing more bond-switching events per irreversible bond loss under tensile stress. Our discovery is fundamentally important for understanding the damage tolerance of small-scale amorphous structures.
The Dissociated Amorphous Silica Surface: Model Development and Evaluation.

Abstract:At pH 7, amorphous silica has a characteristic negative charge due to the deprotonation of silanol groups on the surface. Electrokinetic phenomena and transport of biomolecules in devices depend sensitively on the surface morphology, distribution of ions and solvent, and adsorption properties of solutes close to the surface in the electrical double layer region. Hence, simulation of these phenomena requires detailed atomistic models of the double layer region. In this Article, we extend our undissociated silica surface model [J. Phys. Chem. B 2007, 111, 11181-11193] to include dissociated Si-O(-) groups, which interact with both water and salt (Na(+) and Cl(-)). We have also conducted ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of a smaller system consisting of a hydrated silica slab. The radial distribution functions predicted by the empirical model are in qualitative agreement with those from the AIMD simulations. The hydrophobic and hydrophilic nature of silanol-poor and silanol-rich regions of the amorphous silica surface observed in our empirical model is reproduced in the AIMD simulations of the smaller slab. In the initial stages of our AIMD simulations, we observe various chemical processes that represent different hydroxylation mechanisms of the surface.
Understanding phase transitions of $α$-quartz under dynamic compression conditions by machine-learning driven atomistic simulations

Abstract:Characteristic shock effects in silica serve as a key indicator of historical impacts at geological sites. Despite this geological significance, atomistic details of structural transformations under high pressure and shock compression remain poorly understood. This ambiguity is evidenced by conflicting experimental observations of both amorphization and crystallization transitions. Utilizing a newly developed machine-learning interatomic potential, we examine the response of $\alpha$-quartz to shock compression with a peak pressure of 60 GPa over nano-second timescales. We initially observe amorphization before recrystallization into a d-NiAs-structured silica with disorder on the silicon sublattice, accompanied by the formation of domains with partial order of silicon. Investigating a variety of strain conditions enables us to identify the non-hydrostatic stress and strain states that allow the direct diffusionless formation of rosiaite-structured silica.

Abstract:Hydrothermal activity in the crust results in the precipitation of large volumes of silica and often involves the formation of ore deposits, the shaping of geothermal systems, and recurring earthquakes. Pore fluid pressures fluctuate between lithostatic and hydrostatic, depending on seismic activity, and some models suggest the possibility of flash vaporization, given that fluid pressures can drop to the level of vapour at fault jogs during seismic slip. The phase changes of water could create extremely high supersaturations of silica, but the mechanisms of quartz vein formation under such extreme conditions remain unclear. Here we describe flash experiments conducted with silica-saturated solutions under conditions ranging from subcritical to supercritical. We found that amorphous silica is produced instantaneously as spherical nano- to micron-scale particles via nucleation and aggregation during the evaporation of water droplets. The nanoparticles are transformed to microcrystalline quartz very rapidly by dissolution and precipitation in hydrothermal solutions, with this process requiring less than one day under supercritical conditions because of the huge surface areas involved. We suggest that such short-lived silica nanoparticles have significant impacts on the dynamic changes in mechanical behaviour and hydrology of hydrothermal systems in volcanic areas.
Composition, Thermal Expansion and Phase Transitions in Framework Silicates: Revisitation and Review of Natural and Synthetic Analogues of Nepheline-, Feldspar- and Leucite-Mineral Groups

Abstract:Framework silicates form about 70% of the Earth’s crust, mainly feldspars ~50–60% and quartz ~10–15%. Less-abundant feldspathoids include nepheline-, leucite-, and sodalite-group minerals, rich in structurally challenging properties. This review paper deals with anhydrous feldspar-, nepheline-, and leucite/pollucite groups, emphasising the importance of parallel studies on natural and synthetic samples. Four topics are covered. For decades, petrologists have analysed nephelines and recalculated their compositions as endmember molecules but, by not following rules of stuffed-tridymite crystal chemistry, have not estimated reliably the excess SiO2 present in solid solution. Some materials scientists make similar mistakes, and a new approach is described here. Synthesis studies of analogue feldspars, nephelines, and leucite/pollucites led to collaborative studies, mainly using laboratory and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction methods at room and elevated temperatures, to study thermal expansion and displacive phase transitions. Such work was recently expanded to address the spontaneous strain relations. Topics covered here include work on nepheline/kalsilite analogues in the system SrAl2O4—BaAl2O4; thermal expansion of (K,Na)Al-, RbAl-, RbGa-, and SrAl-feldspars; and thermal expansion and phase transitions in analogue leucites KGaSi2O6 (tetragonal to cubic) and K2MgSi5O12 (monoclinic to orthorhombic). Results are reviewed in the context of research published in mineralogical and more-widely in physical sciences journals.
Pressure-induced Amorphization of Crystalline Silica

Abstract:The crystalline-to-amorphous transformation in the solid state is currently the subject of intense study. With the seminal discovery of amorphization of H2O ice I under pressure1, interest has focused on the possible occurrence of pressure-induced amorphization in other systems, the thermodynamic and mechanistic basis of the process, and the relationship between amorphization by pressure and by other means2–5. Here we report in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements of α-quartz and coesite in a diamond-anvil cell that demonstrate that these crystalline materials transform to amorphous solids at 25–35 GPa and 300 K. We show that an internally consistent thermodynamic description of the process is possible, extending into the pressure domain recent thermodynamic calculations of thermally-induced amorphization of silica polymorphs4. The measurements provide constraints on the equations of state and melting relations in this system at high pressures, shed light on the mechanism for glass formation in SiO2 in laboratory shock-wave experiments and meteorite-impact events, and provide insights into the thermoelastic stability of tetrahedral network structures at high compression.

Abstract:The nitrogen cycling between the surficial and deep Earth is vital for the evolution of atmosphere and life. Silicate minerals are the main nitrogen carriers and their stabilities dictate the recycling efficiency of nitrogen to the deep Earth. Although extensive studies have explored silicate stabilities, the impacts of nitrogen on the stability of silicate minerals have received very few attentions. Feldspar is one of the most important nitrogen carriers and nitrogen is mainly incorporated as ammonium. Here, we reveal nitrogen impacts on the structural stability of feldspar, using in situ high temperature and high pressure spectroscopy and machine learning. The results show that the thermal expansion coefficient of the feldspar with 0.12 wt% ammonium is 14.9 +/- 0.5 K-1, smaller than 18.3 +/- 1.83 K-1 of the nitrogen-free feldspar with similar other elemental compositions. The nitrogen-bearing feldspar experiences a structural transition near 15.3 GPa, while the reported structural tran-sition pressures of nitrogen-free feldspars were generally lower than 13 GPa. By comparing with previous studies, we also reveal that ammonium reduces the thermal stability of tectosilicates when the ammonium content is high enough while it enhances the thermal stability of phyllosilicates regardless of content. These findings provide crucial constraints on the densities and phase stabilities of nitrogen-bearing silicates. The nitrogen-bearing feldspar has a higher density than those nitrogen-free counterparts, and can survive in polymorph modifica-tions to greater depths. The role of nitrogen-bearing silicates is thus highlighted for not only deep nitrogen recycling, but also potential contribution to physical properties of the subducting slab.

Abstract:Silica (SiO2) has been widely used as a support for various heterogeneous catalysts because of its Earth abundance, low cost, and large specific surface area. Except for the families of mesoporous and microporous silica, ordinary silica has long been perceived as just an inert support for better dispersion and mechanistic studies. However, recent advances have demonstrated new functionalities of structurally engineered silica to directly maneuver the catalytic performance, of which researchers are largely unaware. In this review, we start with a brief discussion about the fundamental merits of silica. Subsequently, we discuss distinctive features of silica through ingenious designs, which could enhance the activity, stability, and selectivity of heterogeneous catalysts. Finally, we put forward prospects and challenges for designing innovative silica-based catalysts, providing insights into viable techniques for high-performance heterogeneous catalysis.
Transformation Pathways of Silica under High Pressure

Abstract:Concurrent molecular dynamics simulations and ab initio calculations show that densification of silica under pressure follows a ubiquitous two-stage mechanism. First, anions form a close-packed sub-lattice, governed by the strong repulsion between them. Next, cations redistribute onto the interstices. In cristobalite silica, the first stage is manifest by the formation of a metastable phase, which was observed experimentally a decade ago, but never indexed due to ambiguous diffraction patterns. Our simulations conclusively reveal its structure and its role in the densification of silica.

Abstract:Silica (SiO_{2}), as a raw material of silicon, glass, ceramics, abrasive, and refractory substances, etc., is of significant importance in industrial applications and fundamental research such as electronics and planetary science. Here, using a crystal structure searching method and first-principles calculations, we predicted that a ground state crystalline phase of silica with R3[over ¯] symmetry is stable at around 645-890 GPa, which contains six-, eight-, and nine-coordinated silicon atoms and results in an average coordination number of eight. This mixed-coordination silica fills in the density, electronic band gap, and coordination number gaps between the previously known sixfold pyrite-type and ninefold Fe_{2}P-type phases, and may appear in the core or mantle of super-Earth exoplanets, or even the solar giant planets such as the Neptune. In addition, we also found that some silicon superoxides, Cmcm SiO_{3} and Ccce SiO_{6}, are stable in this pressure range and may appear in an oxygen-rich environment. Our finding enriches the high-pressure phase diagram of silicon oxides and improves understanding of the interior structure of giant planets in our solar system.

Abstract:The physical state and properties of silicates at conditions encountered in the cores of gas giants, ice giants and of Earth like exoplanets now discovered with masses up to several times the mass of the Earth remains mostly unknown. Here, we report on theoretical predictions of the properties of silica, SiO$_2$, up to 4 TPa and about 20,000K using first principle molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory. For conditions found in the Super-Earths and in ice giants, we show that silica remains a poor electrical conductor up to 10 Mbar due to an increase in the Si-O coordination with pressure. For Jupiter and Saturn cores, we find that MgSiO$_3$ silicate has not only dissociated into MgO and SiO$_2$, as shown in previous studies, but that these two phases have likely differentiated to lead to a core made of liquid SiO$_2$ and solid (Mg,Fe)O.

Stability of Diatomaceous Silica and Its Geochemical Implication

Abstract:An experiment of stability of diatomaceous silica was performed. The results show that pH value and temperature dominantly influence the stability. The pH value concerning largely dissolving diatomaceous silica is 2–3 higher than that amorphous silica due to the buffer action of coexistent clay minerals. The solubility of diatomaceous silica rises distinctly when temperature is over 40 °C, which suggests the cause of distribution of large-scale diatomite deposits in the middle to high latitude areas over the world. There is no close relationship between the solubility of diatomaceous silica and time, which shows that the content of diatomaceous silica in diatomite deposits are determined by the latest environment condition since they formed and bore no relation to the time they experienced.
Slow weathering of a sandstone-derived Podzol (Falkland Islands) resulting in high content of a non-crystalline silicate

Abstract:Mineral weathering processes in soils are important controls on soil characteristics and on bio- and geochemical cycling. Elucidation of these processes and their mechanisms is crucial for understanding soil environments and their influence globally. An Umbric Podzol from the Falkland Islands was studied while investigating possible ways to counteract soil degradation and loss. The soil had lost the O, E, and Bs horizons through erosion, thus revealing the transitional B/C horizon, which grades into the underlying parent material. Samples were taken from the B/C surface and 5 cm below the surface, then analyzed with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, organic C and N analysis, analysis of extractable Fe and Al with the dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate and ammonium oxalate methods, and Fourier-transform infrared analysis. The soil fabric and mineralogy were compatible with derivation from sandstone rock. Clasts of heterogeneous mineral composition as well as loose material from disaggregated clasts were present. The soil had large proportions of quartz and albite, and minor amounts of muscovite, chlorite, plagioclase, feldspar, kaolinite, and non-diffracting Fe oxide (goethite and/or ferrihydrite). The most peculiar characteristic was a large component (~7 wt% of the bulk soil) of an amorphous (non-X-ray diffracting) silicate phase of small particle size (<1 μm), non-extractable, with heterogeneous composition. The average composition of this phase is similar to that of the bulk soil and approaches that of Al-Fe-rich smectite. The amorphous phase is not allophane or imogolite by any of the analyses carried out. The amorphous silicate phase is formed partly by the translocation of metals from O, E, and Bs horizons and partly by dissolution of the primary minerals of the B/C horizon, both of which precipitated in combination with low water mobility causing rapid saturation of the interstitial water. There are no reports of amorphous silicate phases with these characteristics or abundances from soils or other weathering environments. Thus, our observations indicate the existence of complex, successive weathering steps not yet identified that could be investigated in materials subjected to slow weathering such as the soil described here.

Structural response of alpha-quartz under plate-impact shock compression

Abstract:Due to its far-reaching applications in geophysics and materials science, quartz has been one of the most extensively examined materials under dynamic compression. Despite 50 years of active research, questions remain concerning the structure and transformation of SiO2 under shock compression. Continuum gas-gun studies have established that under shock loading quartz transforms through an assumed mixed-phase region to a dense high-pressure phase. While it has been often assumed that this high-pressure phase corresponds to the stishovite structure observed in static experiments, there has been no atomic-level structure data confirming this. In this study, we use gas-gun shock compression coupled with in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction to interrogate the crystal structure in shock-compressed alpha-quartz up to 65 GPa. Our results reveal that alpha-quartz undergoes a phase transformation to a disordered metastable phase as opposed to crystalline stishovite or an amorphous phase, challenging long-standing assumptions about the dynamic response of this fundamental material.

Abstract:α‐Quartz undergoes metastable phase transformations when statically compressed outside of its stability field at 300 K. Crystalline‐crystalline and crystalline‐amorphous transformations in α‐quartz are documented by a variety of techniques which probe the structure from macroscopic to interatomic length scales. Material recovered from static α‐quartz compression experiments exhibits a number of similarities to quartz experiencing shock compression and comminution.

Abstract:Solid-state amorphization is a transformation that has been observed in a growing number of materials. Microscopic observations indicate that amorphization of a-quartz begins with formation of crystallographically controlled planar defects and is followed by growth of amorphous silicon dioxide at these defect sites. Similar transformation microstructures are found in quartz upon quasihydrostatic and nonhydrostatic compression in a diamond-anvil cell to 40 gigapascals and from simple comminution. The results suggest that there is a common mechanism for solid-state amorphization of silicates in static and shock high-pressure experiments, meteorite impact, and deformation by tectonic processes. In general, these results are consistent with recently proposed shear instability models of amorphization.

Abstract:Defects in the crystalline structure of quartz facilitate the connection with the alkali hydroxides, since under a high alkalinity condition (e.g., in concrete), the Si-O bonds of quartz are easily broken. This study set out to investigate the influence of the deformation structures of quartz on its susceptibility to the alkali–silica reaction. A granite, a protomylonite, and a mylonite were selected for this study. Using optical microscopy, the quartz grains contained in these rocks were quantified and their texture characterized. The quartz samples extracted from the rocks were analyzed by magnetic nuclear resonance, to evaluate their potential for dissolving silica as well as changes in their atomic scale before and after the reaction with alkali hydroxides. These analyses were compared with the results of the accelerated mortar bar test. The study showed that the quartz with intense undulatory extinction and deformation bands denotes the most favorable condition to the development of the alkali–silica reaction. However, on an atomic scale, the slightly deformed grains were highly prone to react. Thus, in a high alkalinity condition, over a long period of time, any quartz tends to develop the alkali–silica reaction, regardless of the deformation degree of the grain.

Groundwater silcrete linked to brine migration in a continental rift: An alternative to the near-surface model of silcrete

Abstract:Silcretes have long been recognized as modern and ancient duricrusts, but more recently also as silicified layers precipitated at groundwater tables, termed groundwater silcrete. However, the silica sources, transport mechanisms, and precipitation processes of groundwater silcrete are not well understood, and models are limited to the near-surface groundwater environment, where silica saturation is low. Here, an example of a groundwater silcrete from Upper Cambrian strata of the Potsdam Group is described and interpreted to be formed in a rift where Cambrian fault reactivation coincided with silcrete formation. Field relationships strongly support a connection between fault activity and silicification, including a systematic thickening and development of massive silcrete horizons above shear zones, brecciated silcrete near where faults intersect shear zones, and nodules along the margins of shear zones. Petrographic and cathodoluminescence microscopy of silcrete reveal early pre-compaction overgrowth cements with abundant primary fluid inclusions. Fluid inclusion microthermometry indicates that these fluids were high salinity (22.7–25.8 eq. wt% NaCl+CaCl2) brines with homogenization temperatures of ~120.2 °C–151.6 °C, which implies that silica precipitated from a hot, silica-saturated crustal brine from Grenville Province basement. A combination of weathering reactions and direct quartz dissolution explains the chemical evolution of the source fluid, which likely originated as infiltrated meteoric water that had chemically equilibrated with Grenville crust at depth. Later, this brine was mobilized upward along reactivated faults during the Late Cambrian, and ultimately to the water table, where a combination of reduced pH and temperature promoted quartz supersaturation and quartz overgrowths on detrital quartz. This case example, therefore, expands the definition of silcrete to include near-surface silicification from externally sourced crustal fluids, here termed brine silcrete, and provides a basis for interpreting silcrete as a feature of deformation and fluid migration along shear zones in fault-bounded continental basins.

Abstract:First-principles calculations and analysis of the thermodynamic, structural, and electronic properties of liquid SiO$_2$ characterize the bonded-to-atomic transition at 0.1--1.6 TPa and 10$^4$--10$^5$ K (1--7 eV), the high-energy-density regime relevant to understanding planetary interiors. We find strong ionic bonds that become short-lived due to high kinetics during the transition, with sensitivity of the transition temperature to pressure, and our calculated Hugoniots agree with past experimental data. These results reconcile previous experimental and theoretical findings by clarifying the nature of the bond dissociation process in early Earth and "rocky" (oxide) constituents of large planets.

Abstract:Understanding the kinetics of shock-compressed SiO2 is of great importance for mitigating optical damage for high-intensity lasers and for understanding meteoroid impacts. Experimental work has placed some thermodynamic bounds on the formation of high-pressure phases of this material, but the formation kinetics and underlying microscopic mechanisms are yet to be elucidated. Here, by employing multiscale molecular dynamics studies of shock-compressed fused silica and quartz, we find that silica transforms into a poor glass former that subsequently exhibits ultrafast crystallization within a few nanoseconds. We also find that, as a result of the formation of such an intermediate disordered phase, the transition between silica polymorphs obeys a homogeneous reconstructive nucleation and grain growth model. Moreover, we construct a quantitative model of nucleation and grain growth, and compare its predictions with stishovite grain sizes observed in laser-induced damage and meteoroid impact events.
