Abstract:The complex ClRh(P approximately O)(P O) (1; P O = eta2(O,P)-chelated Cy2PCH2CH2OCH3 ligand; P approximately O = eta1(P) coordinated) exhibits fluxional behavior on the P-31 NMR time scale. Line-shape analysis of variable-temperature P-31{H-1) NMR spectra of 1 yields values of DELTAH(double-dagger) = 43.0 +/- 3.4 kJ mol-1 and DELTAS(double dagger) = -42 +/- 11.8 J mol-I K-1, indicating an associative mechanism of the dynamic process involving a five-coordinate species. Hydrogenation of 1-hexene to n-hexane over complex 1 as precatalyst proceeds with 100% selectivity and excellent activity (turnover number 7920 h-1) under mild conditions (300 K, 40 bar of H-2). Oxidative addition of H-2 and 02 results in the formation of the unstable dihydridorhodium(III) complex ClRhH2(P approximately O)2 (2) and the relatively stable (dioxygen)rhodium(III) complex ClRhO2(P approximately O)(P O) (3), respectively. The reaction of methyl iodide and acetyl chloride with complex 1 affords the products of the oxidative addition in trans fashion (CH3(Cl)(I)Rh(P approximately 0)(P O) (5a), CH3C(O)Cl2Rh(P approximately 0)(P O) (6a)) and cis fashion (CH3(Cl)(I)Rh(P approximately O)2 (5b), CH3(I)(CI)Rh(P approximately O)2 (5c), CH3C(O)Cl2Rh(P approximately O)2 (6b)). The use of labeled (CH3I)-C-13 and (CH3C(O)Cl)C-13 supports the structural characterization of all isomers by P-31{H-1} and C-13{H-1} NMR spectroscopy. When it is warmed in CDC13, 5a' is irreversibly converted into 5b' and 5c' (5a', 5b', and 5c' = (CH3)-C-13-labeled isomers of complex 5). First-order kinetics in 5a' with a rate constant of 7.67 X 10(-5) s-I at 287 K is established. The carbonylation of 5b (5b') gives a mixture of IRhCO(P approximately 0)2 (8) and CH3C(0)Rh(I) (Cl) (P approximately O)2 (9; 9' = (CH3C)-C-13-(O)-labeled analogue of 9) via the unstable intermediate 7. The progress of the reaction is monitored, and the compounds 8,9 (9'), and (CH3Cl)-C-13 are identified by P-31{H-1} and C-13{H-1} NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Rhodium complex based on 9-(p-methoxybenzyl)-1,2,3,4- tetrahydrofluorenyl ligand was found to be an efficient catalyst for various C–H annulation reactions such as couplings of benzoic acids with alkynes, pivaloyl hydroxamate with alkenes, or the tandem reaction of p-anisaldehyde and p-toluidine with tolane. The catalyst demonstrated higher catalytic performance than the unsubstituted analog due to the stabilization of the rhodium–tetrahydrofluorenyl bond. Tetrahydrofluorenyl rhodium complexes also effectively catalyzed the synthesis of tetramethyl thiophene-2,3,4,5- tetracarboxylate from elemental sulfur and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:New examples of the rare class of rhodium(I) ferrocenyl Fischer carbene complexes 1–8, [Rh(LL)Cl{C(XR)Fc}] [LL = cod, (CO)2, (CO, PR3) (R = Ph, Cy or OPh), and (CO, AsPh3); XR = OEt or NH n Pr] were prepared, and the electronic effects of coligands and alkoxy vs aminocarbene substituents were investigated by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. The molecular structures of complexes 1, 2, and 4–6 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The use of the complexes 1–8 as homogeneous catalysts for the hydroformylation of 1-octene was demonstrated, and the influence of the carbene substituents and coligands on the activity and regioselectivity of the catalysts evaluated. Finally, the stability of the Rh–Ccarbene bond of complex 1 under hydroformylation conditions was confirmed with 13C NMR experiments.

Abstract:Mononuclear cationic rhodium complexes of dioxygen have been synthesized and characterized. Crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational results support the conclusion that these complexes are best described as Rh-III{O-2(2-)} (rhodium(III) peroxo) complexes, in contrast to recently reported neutral analogues that are best described as Rh-I(O-1(2)) adducts. The nature of the ligand trans to the O-2 ligand is crucial in defining the electronic nature of the RhO2 bonding. It is determined that pi-donor ligands such as the halides-in conjunction with sufficient steric bulk-can stabilize the formation of Rh-I{O-1(2)}. adducts, whereas stronger field ligands lead to the stabilization of asymmetric O-2 binding that ultimately favors formation of higher coordinate Rh-III peroxo species. The factors that control the relative stabilization of Rh-III{O-2(2-)} versus Rh-I{O-1(2)} species are related to the well established Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model that has been successfully used to describe the bonding in isoelectronic transition metal alkene complexes. The specific factors that control the stabilization of one electromer (resonance structure) over another are explored and discussed in detail.

Abstract:A facile [3 + 2] cycloaddition / aromatization cascade reaction with broad substrate scopes in up to 94% isolated yield was disclosed herein. This tandem approach was accomplished by employing isoquinolines and bromoacetyl derivatives with methyl perfluoroalk-2-ynoates as readily available starting materials. In the presence of base, this method provides an efficient access to synthesize perfluoroalkylated pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines with ambient air as a terminal oxidant at room temperature in one-pot.

Abstract:We report rhodium complexes bearing PAlP pincer ligands with an X-type aluminyl moiety. IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a carbonyl complex exhibit the considerable sigma-donating ability of the aluminyl ligand, whose Lewis acidity is confirmed through coordination of pyridine to the aluminum center. The X-type PAlP-Rh complexes catalyze C2-selective monoalkylation of pyridine with alkenes.

Abstract:Synthetic strategies for electron-deficient meso-perfluoroalkylporphyrins bearing diverse functional groups are described. Scalable and efficient syntheses for 5-triisopropylsilylethynyl-10,15,20-tris(heptafluoropropyl)porphyrin and 5-triisopropylsilylethynyl-10,20-bis(heptafluoropropyl)porphyrin that equip meso-ethynyl functional groups via the bilane route have been established, along with a refined route to [5,15-bis(heptafluoropropyl)porphinato]zinc(II). meso-Position halogenation of [5,15-bis(heptafluoropropyl)porphinato]zinc(II) was achieved by selective meso-nitration and subsequent reduction, diazonium salt formation, and iodination reactions. Computational data describe the low energy excited states of these chromophores and the electronic structural factors that control reactivity of these meso-perfluoroalkyl substituted porphyrin complexes. meso-Functionalized [5-triisopropylsilylethynyl-10,20-bis(heptafluoropropyl)porphinato]zinc(II) and [5-iodo-10,20-bis(heptafluoropropyl)porphinato]zinc(II) building blocks lay the foundation for the construction of highly conjugated multiporphyrin arrays that feature electronic structural properties important for the development of n-type materials and high potential photooxidants.

Abstract:Rhodium carboxylato complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, [Rh(IPr)(CO)(2)(OAc)] (1) and [Rh(IPr)(2)(CO)(OAc)] (2), have been synthesized and characterized. The two complexes are catalytically active for the regioselective hydroformylation of both aryl and aliphatic alkenes with regioselectivities of up to 40:1, without concomitant isomerization or hydrogenation.

Abstract:Rh(II) porphyrin complexes display pronounced metal-centered radical character and the ability to activate small molecules under mild conditions, but catalysis with Rh(II) porphyrins is extremely rare. In addition to facile dimerization, Rh(II) porphyrins readily engage in kinetically and thermodynamically facile reactions involving two Rh(II) centers to generate stable Rh(III)-X intermediates that obstruct turnover in thermal catalysis. Here we report site isolation of Rh(II) metalloradicals in a MOF host, which not only protects Rh(II) metalloradicals against dimerization, but also allows them to participate in thermal catalysis. Access to PCN-224 or PCN-222 in which the porphyrin linkers are fully metalated by Rh(II) in the absence of any accompanying Rh(0) nanoparticles was achieved via the first direct MOF synthesis with a linker containing a transition-metal alkyl moiety, followed by Rh(III)–C bond photolysis.

Abstract:The effect of ancillary phosphine ligands on the structure and hydroformylation activity of Rh-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of type [Rh(IMes)(PR3)(CO)Cl] and [Rh(SIMes)(PR3)(CO)Cl] is described. Very high selectivities for the branched isomer (>95:5) were obtained in the hydroformylation of vinylarenes in all cases except for R = OPh. The new complexes were characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray crystallography.Key words: hydroformylation, rhodium, N-heterocyclic carbene, IMes.

Abstract:Hybrid phosphines usually combine a phosphine moiety with another heteroatom secondary donor group in their structures while compounds equipped with hydrocarbyl π-donor moieties remain still uncommon. This contribution reports the synthesis and structural characterization of the first P/π-allyl-chelating complexes that were obtained using the structurally flexible and redox-active ferrocene unit as the scaffold, viz. [PdCl(R2PfcCHCHCH2-η3:κP)] (1R; R = Ph and cyclohexyl (Cy); fc = ferrocene-1,1'-diyl). These compounds were synthesized from the respective phosphinoferrocene carboxaldehydes R2PfcCHO via reaction with vinylmagnesium bromide to generate 1-(phosphinoferrocenyl)allyl alcohols, which were subsequently acetylated. The resulting allyl acetates reacted smoothly with [Pd2(dba)3]/[Et3NH]Cl (dba = dibenzylideneacetone) to produce the target compounds. Complexes 1R and their nontethered analogues [PdCl(η3-C3H5)(FcPR2-κP)] (5R; Fc = ferrocenyl) were evaluated as pre-catalysts for the Pd-catalysed allylic amination of cinnamyl acetate with aliphatic amines and Suzuki-Miyaura-type cross-coupling of 4-tolylboronic acid with benzoyl chloride. In these reactions, better results were achieved with compounds 5R (particularly with 5Ph), presumably because they form more stable LPd(0)-type catalysts.

Abstract:Popular carbene‐based CCC‐pincer platforms have been utilized to access a less studied 5‐/6‐coordinate Rh(III) system, exhibiting high E‐regioselectivity in catalytic alkyne hydrosilylations. NHC pincers (NHC = N‐heterocyclic carbene), which combine the structural benefits of both carbenes and pincer platforms, have shown diverse applications, spanning from fundamental organometallic chemistry to homogeneous catalysis. Although aryl‐bridged bis(NHCs) represent the earliest developed and most studied type of NHC pincers, such [C^C^C]‐platforms have been underutilized in the synthesis of rhodium complexes. In this study, we present several less explored organorhodium(III) complexes featuring [C^C^C]‐pincers. Their synthetic route via a convenient oxidative addition approach has been explored, and the obtained cyclorhodium(III) complexes show versatile coordination geometry (square pyramidal or octahedral). Additionally, these cyclorhodium(III) complexes exhibit very different regioselectivity in catalytic alkyne hydrosilylations compared to known Rh(III) NHC catalytic systems. Finally, a few mechanistic studies have also been conducted, and a plausible mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:This article reports on the selective oxidation of unactivated alkenes to ketones and epoxides through the intermediacy of beta-hydroxyalkyl rhodium porphyrin complexes which are formed by reactions of terminal alkenes with tetra(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin rhodium(III) complex. The beta-hydroxyalkyl rhodium porphyrin complexes in water undergo beta-C-H elimination to produce ketones in aqueous pH 9.0 solutions and O-H deprotonation in KOH/DMSO solutions resulting in the rapid and quantitative intramolecular nucleophilic displacement to form 1,2-epoxyalkanes.
