Abstract:Hydrogels containing various mounts of tetraalkylammonium salts were used to modify microcantilevers for measurements of the concentration of CrO4(2-) in aqueous solutions. These microcantilevers undergo bending deflection upon exposure to solutions containing various CrO4(2-) concentrations as a result of swelling or shrinking of the hydrogels. The microcantilever deflection as a function of the concentration of CrO4(2-) ions is nearly linear in most concentration ranges. It was found that a concentration of 10(-11) M CrO4(2-) can be detected using this technology in a fluid cell. Other ions, such as Br-, HPO4(2-), and NO3-, have minimal effect on the deflection of this cantilever. The anions SO4(2-) and CO3(2-) could interfere with the CrO4(2-) detection, but only at high concentrations (> 10(-5) M). Such hydrogel-coated microcantilevers could potentially be used to prepare microcantilever-based chemical and biological sensors when molecular recognition agents are immobilized in the hydrogel.

Abstract:A series of new compounds (1-4) based on pyrrole hydrazone Schiff bases were designed and synthesized. The interactions of these new compounds with metal ions and their fluorescent recognition were investigated. All compounds showed "turn-on" fluorescence in the presence of Al3+ in aqueous solution. Their sensing behaviors with Al3+ were studied using photophysical experiments, ESI-MS spectrometry analysis, 1H NMR titration, and DFT calculation. The detection limits of 1-4 for the analysis of Al3+ were found to reach a 10−8 M level in aqueous solution, which are far lower than the WHO guidelines for drinking water (7.41 mM for Al3+). A high selectivity test paper has been fabricated for Al3+ detection based on sensor 3. Theoretical calculations (DFT) have been carried out to elucidate the configuration of 1-4 and their Al complexes and rationalize experimental absorption data.

Abstract:Many Al 3+ sensors have been reported in the literature, the lack of spectral features and poor coordination of Al 3+ pose a significant challenge to detection. Herein, the design and synthesis of a Schiff 's base ( HL ) sensor is reported, which exhibits a turn -on response to Al 3+ in an aqueous solution, and the fluorescence color of HL from light green to cyan upon the addition of Al 3+ . The limit of detection (LOD) for Al 3+ was determined to be 2.20 x 10 -8 M. The mechanism for fluorescence sensing was revealed through the analysis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, DFT, and UV -vis absorption spectra. HL gradually coordinated with Al 3+ during the titration process, leading to the formation of HL -Al crystals. The outcome of this study resulted in the successful preparation and application of flexible and foldable films for visual detection of Al 3+ .

Abstract:A novel fluorescent probe tetrastyrene derivative (L) with aggregation induced emission (AIE) and high quantum yields prosperities is synthesized by a simple method. The optical properties of probe L to Al3+ are investigated using fluorescence emission spectral analysis and a low detection limit of 1.587 × 10-7 M for Al3+ in MeOH/H2O (v/v = 9/1, Tris = 20 mM, pH = 7.40) is obtained. The combination ratio of L to Al3+ (1:1) is determined by ESI-MS and Job's plot. Meanwhile, probe L has a good response to Al3+ in a wide pH range of 2-12. More importantly, the probe L shows very low cytotoxicity and strong fluorescence emission in living cells. This indicates that the probe L has potential application prospects in the detection of Al3+ in environmental and biological systems.

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor 1 was developed for the detection of Al(3+) in aqueous solution based on aggregation-induced emmision (AIE). The chemosensor showed the fluorescence of its aggregated state and Al(3+)-chelated soluble state in the absence and in the presence of Al(3+), respectively, and resulted in a fluorescence ratio (I461/I537) response to Al(3+) in neutral aqueous solution at a detection limit as low as 0.29 μmol L(-1). The method was also highly selective to Al(3+) over other physiological relevant metal ions investigated in this study. Taking advantage of its AIE characteristics, the chemosensor was successfully applied on test papers for simple and rapid detection of Al(3+). Moreover, the application of 1 for the imaging of Al(3+) in living cells by ratiometric fluorescence changes was also achieved.

Abstract:Supramolecular gels with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) are recognized as excellent chemosensor. The combination of gelators and metal ions gives rise to a synergistic effect, which induces functional behaviors of anions and amino acids. 3, 4, 5-tris(hexadecyl) benzoyl hydrazine functionalized naphthalimides gelator G with multi self-assembly driving forces was devised and synthesized. G could self-assemble into stable supramolecular organogel (OG) in cyclohexanol solution with blue-green AIE. Notably, the OG could coordinate with different metal ions through coordination bonds to form series metallogels (OGMs). In addition, these metallogels (OGMs) could selectively sense various anions (I–, N3–, CN–,) and amino acids (L-Trp and L-His) via synergistic coordination interaction between target ions/ amino acids and presetting metal ions in OGMs. Therefore, a six-membered anions and amino acids sensor array based on supramolecular metallogels (OGMs) was successfully constructed. Moreover, the anion/amino acids responsive films based on supramolecular metallogels (OGMs) were prepared, which could be used as fluorescence anti-counterfeiting and encryption materials. Thereby, the supramolecular metallogels will be of great application value in anions and amino acids detection as well as smart material.

Abstract:A functional ionic microgel sensor array was developed by using 1-(2-pyridinylazo)-2-naphthaleno (PAN)- and bromothymol blue (BTB)-functionalized ionic microgels, which were designed and synthesized by quaternization reaction and anion exchange reaction, respectively. The PAN microgels (PAN-MG) and BTB microgels (BTB-MG) were spherical in shape with a narrow size distribution and exhibited characteristic colors in aqueous solution in the presence of various trace-metal ions, which could be visually distinguished by the naked eye. Such microgels could be used for the colorimetric detection of various metal ions in aqueous solution at submicromolar levels, which were lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standard for the safety limit of metal ions in drinking water. A total of 10 species of metal ions in aqueous solution, Ba2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Zn2+, Ni2+ Cu2+, and Al2+, were successfully discriminated by the as-constructed microgel sensor array combined with discriminant analysis, agglomerative hierarchical clustering, and leave-one-out cross-validation analysis.

Abstract:A simple and efficient fluorescent chemosensor for Al(3+) is reported in the paper. The chemosensor is obtained by dehydration reaction of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and 2-aminophenol. The chemosensor has high selectivity and sensitivity for Al(3+) and displays fluorescence "off-on" switch signal. The detection limit of the chemosensor for Al(3+) can reach 1.0×10(-7) M in DMSO/H2O (1:9, v/v) solution. The mass spectra and Job's plot analysis confirm the 1:1 stoichiometry between chemosensor and Al(3+). Potential utilization of the probe as an intracellular sensor of Al(3+) in human cancer (HiSa) cells is also examined by confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract:Tetraphenylethylene-based covalent organic framework (COF-DHTA) was prepared and then well characterized. COF-DHTA processes regular pore structure and high thermal stability. COF-DHTA suspension in DMF displays moderate fluorescence emission in DMF suspension and a highly selective fluorescence "turn-on" response towards Al3+ ions. The fluorescence intensity of COF-DHTA suspension at the emission peak 352 nm exhibits a good linear relationship with the concentration of the added Al3+ ions with a very low detection limit of 0.927 μmol/L. The selective and sensitive fluorescence enhancement recognition and detection for Al3+ ions can be attributed to the coordination of Al3+ ions with N and O atoms on the COF-DHTA and the suppression of photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The results of the N2 adsorption experiment, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculation verified the coordination interaction between Al3+ ion and the N and O chelating sites on COF-DHTA. This work may pave the way to reasonable design fluorescent COF chemosensors for the recognition and detection of specific metal ions.

Abstract:Supramolecular gels with metal ion-responsiveness are an important kind of smart materials due to their potential application in environmental monitoring. In this study, a novel l-glutamine-contained 1,8-naphthalimide derivative (NDG) has been designed and synthesized as an organogelator. NDG could self-assemble into stable supramolecular organogels in different kind of solvents, and the gelation process showed bright blue aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The self-assembly behavior, morphology and structure of NDG gels were thoroughly studied by various techniques. Interestingly, the obtained NDG organogel exhibited a fluorescence ‘‘turn-off’’ response for Fe3+ and formed a stable metallogel NDG-Fe3+. The detection limit (LOD) of NDG in diluted solution and gel states for Fe3+ was calculated to be 30.8nM and 11.5nM, respectively, indicating high sensitivity. In addition, the blue fluorescence emission of the gel system was restored in the presence of ascorbic acid and then quenched again with oxygen, which showed reversible fluorescence sensing effect and employed as a logic gate at the molecular level. Furthermore, xerogel-based film of NDG emitted strong blue emission and could be utilized as paper-based chemosensor to detect Fe3+. And also, the NDG gel had potential application in fluorescence display material.

Abstract:An AIE (aggregation induced emission) active probe DFP–AMQ was designed and synthesized as a hexa-coordinated N2O donor chelator for the selective sensing of Al3+ colorimetrically as well as fluorimetrically with a 27-fold fluorescence enhancement for CH3CN–H2O (9 : 1, v/v, pH 7.2, HEPES buffer). The fluorescence enhancement occurred through the blocking of ESIPT, chelation enhanced fluorescence effect (CHEF) arose, and as a result fluorescence enhancement was observed through 1 : 1 complexation with Al3+ ions. Detailed spectroscopic studies including UV-Vis, FTIR, 1H NMR, and HRMS studies were carried out to characterize the probable structure of DFP–AMQ including the complexation of DFP–AMQ with Al3+ ions. The spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric titrations revealed strong binding towards Al3+ and the Kd values were obtained from UV-Vis (3.26 × 10−5 M−1) and fluorescence titration (2.02 × 10−5 M−1). The limit of detection of Al3+ by DFP–AMQ was 1.11 μM. The quantum yields of DFP–AMQ and [DFP–AMQ–Al]+ were calculated to be 0.008 and 0.211, respectively. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies showed that the sizes of the particles increased with increasing water percentage due to aggregation. SEM (scanning electron microscopy) studies revealed interesting morphological changes in microstructures in which DFP–AMQ demonstrated a rod-like shape, which was converted to a spherical-like shape in the presence of Al3+ and when DFP–AMQ aggregated in H2O it showed aggregated block-like shape. In the solid phase, DFP–AMQ with nitrate has no particular shape, but in the presence of acetate, it converts to stone-like shape. This probe (DFP–AMQ) could be employed for on-site Al3+ ion detection in the solid state.

Abstract:Based on Schiff base unit with/without a perfluoroalkyl group, novel multi-functional compounds 1 and 2 were proven to be able to form gels with different solvents. The difference in the molecular structure of compounds 1 and 2 was the presence of a perfluoroalkyl chain. The self-assembly pattern was studied by the employment of rheological analysis, UV–vis absorption, fluorescence spectrum, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectra, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The gelation behaviors showed a sensitive and selective "turn-off" fluorescence response with Cu 2+ . Due to the protonation or deprotonation of compounds 1 and 2 with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) or triethylamine (TEA), the xerogel films which were prepared from DMSO:H 2 O (9:1, v/v) at 5 wt% presented the emission quenching and recovery upon TFA and TEA vapors. In this sense, the work will open up a novel pathway to detect Cu 2+ , TFA, and TEA in the environment, using stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect.

Abstract:Peptide-fluorophore conjugates (PFCs) have been expeditiously utilized for metal ion recognition owing to their distinctive characteristics. Selective detection and quantification of aluminum is essential to minimize health and environmental risks. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a new chemoprobe with aggregation-induced emission characteristics by chemically conjugating rhodamine-B fluorophore with a tripeptide. The probe revealed β-sheet secondary conformation in both solid and solution states, as confirmed by FT-IR, PXRD, and CD experiments. AIE characteristics of the probe in water-MeCN mixtures revealed the formation of spherically shaped nanoaggregates with an average size of 353 ± 7 nm, as confirmed by SEM, TEM, and DLS studies. The probe exhibited a large stokes shift (175 nm) and displayed selective colorimetric and fluorometric responses towards Al3+ ions with an extremely low detection limit (51 nm) and a fast response time (≤15 s). Comparative NMR studies confirmed the cleavage of spirolactam ring upon aluminum binding. The probe's practicality was enhanced through integration into test strips and thin films, allowing solid-phase detection of Al3+ ions. Furthermore, an RGB-Arduino enabled optosensing device has been developed to enable instant quantifiable analysis of aluminum concentrations in real-time conditions.
A New High Selective and Sensitive Fluorescent Probe for Al3+ based on Photochromic Salicylaldehyde Hydrazyl Diarylethene

Abstract:A new diarylethene derivative 1O decorated with a salicylaldehyde hydrazine moiety was designed and synthesized successfully, and its structure was confirmed by NMR. Diarylethene 1O showed eminent photochromism and high selectivity and sensitivity for Al3+ with turn-on fluorescent performance. As the concentration of Al3+ in 1O solution increased, the color of solution remarkably changed from dark to bright green with 313-fold fluorescent emission intensity enhancement. The 1:1 combination stoichiometry between 1O and Al3+ was verified by Job's plot and MS analysis. The association constant between 1O and Al3+ was 3.9 × 102 mol-1 L, and the limit of detection toward Al3+ was 7.98 × 10-9 mol L-1. Meanwhile, the probe can be utilized in practical water and logic circuits.

Abstract:A new Azo-Schiff base ligand (H 2 L) was designed and synthesized as a cation chemosensor. The chemosensor H 2 L as dual chemosensor showed selective fluorescence recognition of Al 3+ with a noticeable fluorescence enhancement and colorimetric detection of Co2 + in aqueous ethanol solution. The H 2 L exhibits a linear response toward Al 3+ ions in the concentration range of 1.91 × 10 –8 M to 4.8 × 10 –6 M with a limit of detection of 1.91 × 10 –8 M. The sensing mechanism of sensor H 2 L toward Al 3+ was investigated by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies. Fluorescence switch based on the control of EDTA and Al 3+ proved H 2 L could act as a reversible chemosensor. The molecular structure of [NiL] complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:A novel C 3 -symmetrical anthracene-functionalized hexahomotrioxacalix[3]arene L was synthesized via Click chemistry and its chemosensing properties with alkylammonium ions were investigated. The significant fluorescence enhancements were observed with addition of alkylammonium ions (including primary and tertiary ones), indicating a high selectivity for alkylammonium ions. Our studies demonstrated that the detection limit on fluorescence response of the sensor to is in the 10 –6 M range. The mechanism of the interaction between the L and alkylammonium ions has been investigated in detail by 1 H NMR spectroscopic titration experiments. Density functional theory (DFT) quantum chemical calculations were conducted to estimate the electronic interaction energies (ΔIE) between the chemosensor L and alkylammonium ions.

Abstract:The hydrazone sensor (1) derived from pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide and 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone (PMBP) was applied to the fluorescent “turn-on” detection of Al3+ in semi-aqueous solutions. The strongly emissive 1+Al3+ complex could identify F− among other tested anions. The detection limits of sensor 1 for Al3+ and F− were 0.18 and 0.20 μM, respectively, which are both much lower than the corresponding values recommended by the World Health Organization, namely, 7.41 and 79 μM. Several spectral methods, including single crystal X-ray analysis for the crystal structures of the Cu2+ and Ni2+ complexes of sensor 1, as well as the density-functional theory method, were used to elucidate the binding mode between the sensor and Al3+. 1 can also be used for a selective sensor to continuously monitor Al3+ and F− in living cells.

Abstract:A protein-based fluorescent sensor for the efficient detection of Al3+ is reported. The sensor is genetically engineered through the residue-specific incorporation of 3, 4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine (Dopa) into a green fluorescent protein (GFP) (termed as GFP-Dopa) and can selectively detect Al3+ in aqueous media. Al3+ could be readily detected through the distinctive fluorescence enhancement as a result of strong chelation of Al3+ with GFP-Dopa. Among 15 different tested metal ions, only Al3+ induces a significant fluorescence enhancement of GFP-Dopa, suggesting a high selectivity and exclusive specificity of GFP-Dopa towards Al3+. Abstract:A novel pyrazine hydrazone 1 has been designed and synthesized, which acts as a multiprobe for selective detection of Al3+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ in DMSO solution based on fluorescent enhancement with three different emission colors. The higher affinity of 1 toward Al3+ and Zn2+ compared with Mg2+ facilitates the establishment of a simple ratiometric fluorescent method for the detection of Al3+ and Zn2+ based on the 1 + Mg2+ system. Conversely, probe 1 selectively recognized Al3+ in DMSO-H2O cosolvent with a turn-on response, and the resultant 1 + Al3+ complex could determine F- via a fluorescence quenching signal. In addition, the probe is applied for imaging of Al3+ and F- in living cells.
