Abstract:Purpose: To examine prescription trends and patterns in five antihypertensive drug classes during 2007 - 2012 in China. Methods: A retrospective time series data was investigated from 2007 to 2012. Prescription data of five classes of antihypertensive drugs (calcium channel blockers (CCBs), angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), beta-blockers, and diuretics) were accessed from the Hospital Prescription Analysis Program Database, including 59 hospitals in four cities in China. The drugs were coded using the Anatomic Chemical Therapeutic (ATC) classification. Quantities were standardized using the defined daily dose (DDD) measurement methodology. Results: The total number of DDDs of the five classes of antihypertensive drugs prescribed in the sample hospitals increased by 83.3% and the total cost of antihypertensive drugs increased by 92.4% from 2007 to 2012. During the whole study period, CCBs, ARBs, ACEIs, beta-blockers, and diuretics represented in DDDs 42.8%, 28.3%, 13.3%, 10.8%, and 4.8%, respectively, of the total five classes of anti-hypertensive drugs. The average annual increase rate of ARBs, beta-blockers, CCBs, ACEIs, and diuretics, in DDDs, was 23.4%, 13.3%, 13.2%, 1.4%, and -4.2%, respectively. Conclusions: The consumption of the five classes of antihypertensive drugs in China nearly doubled from 2007 to 2012. The top-prescribed antihypertensive drug classes were CCBs and ARBs, and the latter increased most rapidly.

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of the use and prescribing patterns of anti-seizure medications (ASMs) over a six-year period, and to provide real-world evidence on medicine utilization of pediatric patients with epilepsy in China. Methods: ASM prescriptions for pediatric patients written from 2013 to 2018 were extracted from the database of the Hospital Prescription Analysis Cooperative Project. Trends of ASM use were analyzed by total prescriptions, cost, age, sex, ASM class and specific ASM. Prescribing patterns of ASMs were also analyzed. Results: A total of 44,675 ASM prescriptions were extracted for analysis in this study. Throughout the study period, a slight increase of ASM prescriptions was observed from 6170 in 2013 to 8211 in 2018. Children aged between 6 and 18 years, accounted for 78 % of total prescriptions every year. ASM use in boys was about 1.5 times higher than that in girls. Newer ASMs were prescribed more than older ASMs during this period. Sodium valpmate was the most frequently prescribed ASM in 2013, and its use decreased in girls in 2016. Levetiracetam increased from 19.10 % in 2013 to 28.09 % in 2018 and became the most common ASM at the end of this study. Meanwhile, the use of oxcarbazepine increased from 19.31 % to 22.04 %, whereas the use of lamotrigine had declined from 18.43 % to 10.72 %. Monotherapy (66.24 %) was more frequently used than combined therapy, which included dual combination (25.80 %) and triple or more combinations (7.96 %). Conclusion: There is an increased ASM prescription trend in childhood usage. Levetiracetam has replaced sodium valpmate as the most frequently prescribed ASM in pediatric patients. Newer ASMs with fewer side effects and drug interactions are increasingly utilized, which is consistent with evolving recommendations by the medical community.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the national trends in anti-seizure medication (ASM) prescription in Chinese adult outpatients with epilepsy over a 6-year period from 2013 to 2018. Prescriptions for adult outpatients with epilepsy from hospitals in six major cities were extracted from the database of the Hospital Prescription Analysis Cooperative Project. Trends in the annual prescriptions and expenditure of ASM were analyzed. Prescription patterns (monotherapy or combination therapy) were also assessed. A total of 225,767 prescriptions from 60 hospitals were eligible and extracted for analysis. The number of ASM prescriptions increased from 28,360 in 2013 to 44,110 in 2018, and the corresponding cost increased from 9,452,990 Chinese Yuan (CNY) in 2013 to 14,627,865 CNY in 2018. The share of newer ASM use increased continuously, accounting for 56.75% of prescriptions and 85.03% of expenditure in 2018. The most frequently prescribed ASMs were sodium valproate and levetiracetam. The proportion of sodium valproate use decreased, while the proportion of levetiracetam use increased dramatically in terms of both ASM prescriptions and expenditure. Monotherapy was more frequent than combination therapy. The three most common combination therapies were sodium valproate/lamotrigine, levetiracetam/oxcarbazepine, and sodium valproate/levetiracetam. In summary, ASM use increased rapidly in terms of the number of ASM prescriptions and cost during the 6-year period, which raises concern regarding the rational use and pharma-economic profiles of ASMs. In place of valproate, levetiracetam became the most frequently used ASM. The development of ASM prescription is in line with therapy guidelines and reflects the current state of research in China.

Abstract:Background: In recent years, innovative approaches utilizing Internet data have emerged in the field of syndromic surveillance. These novel methods aim to aid in the early prediction of epidemics across various scenarios and diseases. It has been observed that these systems demonstrate remarkable accuracy in monitoring outbreaks even before they become apparent in the general population. Therefore, they serve as valuable complementary tools to augment existing methodologies. In this study, we aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of migraine in China by leveraging Baidu Index (BI) data. Methods: Migraine-related BI data from January 2014 to December 2022 were leveraged, covering 301 city-level areas from 31 provincial-level regions by using the keyword "migraine ()". Prevalence data from the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) were attracted to ensure the reliability of utilizing migraine-related BI data for research. Comprehensive analytical methods were then followed to investigate migraine's spatiotemporal distribution. The Seasonal-Trend decomposition procedure based on Loess (STL) was used to identify the temporal distribution. Spatial distribution was explored using the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic, standard deviation ellipse analysis, Moran's Index, and Ordinary Kriging. The top eight migraine-related search terms were analyzed through the Demand Graph feature in the Baidu Index platform to understand the public's concerns related to migraine. Results: A strong association was observed between migraine-related BI and the prevalence data of migraine from GBD with a Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.983 (P = 4.96 × 10- 5). The overall trend of migraine-related BI showed a gradual upward trend over the years with a sharp increase from 2017 to 2019. Seasonality was observed and the peak period occurred in spring nationwide. The middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River were found to be hotspots, while the eastern coastal areas had the highest concentration of migraine-related BI, with a gradual decrease towards the west. The most common search term related to migraine was "How to treat migraine quickly and effectively ()". Conclusions: This study reveals important findings on migraine distribution in China, underscoring the urgent need for effective prevention and management strategies.
Trends in Psychotropic Medication Prescriptions in Urban China From 2013 to 2017: National Population-Based Study

Abstract:Purpose: Psychotropic medications are commonly used for treating mental disorders; however, there is currently no study on how commonly they are used in China. This study reported the trends in psychotropic medications prescriptions in urban China. Methods: A national population-based study was conducted using the China Health Insurance Research Association database to estimate the period prescription prevalence of 11 major classes of psychotropic medications annually during 2013–2017. The World Health Organization Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification codes were used to identify psychotropic medications. Results: The prescription prevalence of any psychotropic medication increased from 8.110% (8.106–8.114%) in 2013 to 11.362% (11.357–11.366%) in 2017. The prescription prevalence of six classes increased significantly during 2013–2017, including sedatives-hypnotics (from 3.177 to 5.388%), anxiolytics (from 1.436 to 2.200%), antiepileptic drugs (from 1.416 to 2.140%), antipsychotics (from 0.809 to 1.156%), antidepressants (from 0.891 to 1.045%), and psycholeptic polypills (from 0.682 to 0.866%). The prescription prevalence of antidementia drugs increased from 0.069 to 0.122%, and mood stabilizers increased from 0.029 to 0.037%, although not statistically significant. The prescription prevalence of nootropic drugs, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications and drugs used in the treatment of addictive disorders was largely stable. Psychotropic medication prescription increased with age for all classes except for ADHD medications and mood stabilizers. Conclusion: Increasing trends in prescription prevalence were observed for most classes of psychotropic medications in urban China, although the prevalence was still lower than that in most developed countries. Further research is warranted to explore the potential treatment gap between China and most developed countries.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo date, no national-scale drug usage survey for adolescents with depression has been conducted in China, and the purpose of this study was to examine the national trends in prescriptions in Chinese adolescent depression patients from 2017 to 2021.MethodsPrescribing data were extracted from the Hospital Prescription Analysis Cooperative Project. The average number of patients per year, the cost of treatment, and the prescription patterns (monotherapy vs. combination therapy) were analyzed, and subgroup analyses were conducted depending on age, sex, and drug class.ResultsThe study included 674,099 patients from 136 hospitals located in nine major areas of China. Of all patients, the proportion of adolescents increased from 1.63% in 2017 to 6.75% in 2021. Visits by adolescent depression patients increased from 1,973 in 2017 to 9,751 in 2021, and the corresponding cost increased from 607,598 Chinese Yuan in 2017 to 2,228,884 Chinese Yuan in 2021. The incidence of adolescent depression among female individuals was far beyond that among male individuals. Combination therapy was more frequent than monotherapy, and the most commonly prescribed drugs were antidepressants, antipsychotics, antiepileptics, and antianxietics. Despite the use of sertraline decreasing from 47.90 to 43.39%, it was the most frequently used drug.ConclusionIn summary, the prescriptions and cost of treatment for adolescent depression patients both increased rapidly. The widespread use of those drugs with weak clinical evidence reflects the current state of China, which should arouse our attention. The study can provide references for clinical treatment decisions and a basis for more efficient allocation of healthcare resources by the government.

Abstract:In the recent years, migraine has been widely studied by scholars from all over the world. This study aimed to use scientometric methods to identify research frontiers and development trends in the field of migraine research. We used the Web of Science (WoS) core collection database to collect articles and reviews related to migraine published from 2010 to 2019 on March 25, 2020. VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Excel were used for the scientometric analysis. A total of 6,357 publications (including 5,203 articles and 1,154 reviews) were identified. The United States published the most publications (n=2,151, 33.84%). Albert Einstein College of Medicine contributed the most publications (n=220, 3.46%). Cephalalgia was found to be the core journal with the most publications (n=766, impact factor 2019 =4.868) as well as the most co-citations (n=35,535). Lipton RB authored the most publications (n=159, 2.50%), while Silberstein SD received the most co-citations (n=4,215). The critical topics were causes and pathophysiological mechanisms, epidemiological characteristics, diagnostic criteria, treatment and prevention drugs, and migraine-related genes. Through the use of scientometric methods, this article has mapped the knowledge landscape of migraine research over the past decade. By showing the overall status of the field, it provides a useful reference for future research.
Chinese herbal medicine for migraine management: A hospital-based retrospective analysis of electronic medical records

Abstract:Background Migraine is a chronic neurological disease causing significant socioeconomic burden and impaired quality of life. Chinese medicine is commonly used for migraine in China. Clinical trials have generated evidence of the effectiveness of Chinese medicine therapies for migraine. However, little is known about how to use these therapies to treat migraine in real-world clinical settings. Methods In this retrospective study, we analyzed data from the electronic medical records (EMRs) of 2,023 migraine patients who attended the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine (GPHCM) between July 2018 and July 2020. Results More than three-quarters (77.21%) of the patients were female. Most (78.20%) of the patients were aged between 18 and 50 years, 18.49% were aged above 50 years, and the remaining 3.31% were under 18 years. Sleep disorders were the most documented comorbidity occurring in 27.29% of patients, and more common in females (29.77%) than male (18.87%). Fatigue was the most frequently reported trigger of migraine attacks among all patients (9.39%), while menstruation was the most common trigger for female patients (10.24%). Less than a quarter of patients (21.01%) reported a history of taking analgesic medication for their migraine. The median treatment duration reported by the patients was 10 days. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) was the predominant treatment for migraine at the hospital (88.48%), while pharmacotherapies were prescribed to 28.97% of the patients. CHM was prescribed more often as a sole treatment (53.58% of patients) than combined with pharmacotherapies (27.39% of patients). Among patients who reported improvements after taking CHM, the most frequently used herbs were fu ling and chuan xiong , the most frequent patented CHM product was tong tian oral solution, and the main herbal formulae were chuan xiong cha tiao san and yi qi cong ming tang . Conclusion CHM formulae, such as chuan xiong cha tiao san and yi qi cong ming tang , patented CHM product tong tian oral solution, and some herbs are potentially effective treatments for migraine. As such, CHM can be used as an alternative to conventional pharmacotherapies for migraine and is worth further evaluation in randomized controlled trials.

Antineoplastic Prescription among Patients with Colorectal Cancer in Eight Major Cities of China, 2015–2019: an Observational Retrospective Database Analysis

Abstract:Objectives It is unclear what is driving rising colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment costs in China, whether an adjustment in drug prices changes use and total cost. This study aims to estimate trends in drug use, prescribing patterns and spending for antineoplastic drug therapies for CRC in major cities of China. Methods Information from 128 811 antineoplastic drug prescriptions in CRC was retrospectively collected from the Hospital Prescription Analysis Cooperative Project. The prescriptions extracted included demographic information of patients, the generic name and the price of antineoplastic drugs. The Mann-Kendall and Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to estimate the trends of antineoplastic agent usage. Results The number of antineoplastic prescriptions ranged from 18 966 in 2015 to 34 219 in 2019. Among the prescriptions collected in this study, the annual cost of antineoplastic drugs increased by 117.2%, and average prescription cost increased by 20%. Throughout the study period, the most prescribed antineoplastic drugs were capecitabine, oxaliplatin, fluorouracil and irinotecan, representing 49%, 27%, 21% and 9% of (per cent of visits (PV)). The PV of bevacizumab and cetuximab increased by 494% and 338% (from 1.8% and 1.3% in 2015 to 10.7% and 5.7% in 2019). In prescribing patterns of antineoplastic agents, monotherapy gradually decreased, while combination therapy, especially three-drug combination, increased significantly from 1.35% to 7.31%. Conclusion This study estimated recent trends of antineoplastic drug use and expenditure for Chinese patients with CRC. These results would inform CRC treatment decisions, including health insurance negotiation, precision therapy access, allocation of research funding and evaluation of the financial burden of CRC drug treatment.
Trends of Drug Shortages in China from 2018 to 2020: A Retrospective Observational Study

Abstract:Background Drug shortage is a significant global public health challenge, threatening both drug safety and patient health. While several studies concerning this issue have been conducted in the USA and in European countries, research in China remains limited. In this study, we aimed to analyse the characteristics and trends of drug shortage in China. Methods We obtained monthly data reporting drug shortages from January 2018 to December 2020 from 1124 medical institutions in 258 prefecture-level cities. We described the characteristics of drugs reported to be in shortage and calculated the occurrence, geographical coverage, and duration of drug shortages. We conducted the modified Mann-Kendall test to analyse trends in drug shortages at the city level over time. Results We identified 2368 drugs from 121 814 shortage records. During the study period, the mean monthly occurrence of shortages for each drug was 1.2 (standard deviation (SD) = 2.5), affecting on average 2.8 (SD = 4.0) cities, with a mean duration of 3.6 (SD = 5.7) months. Around half of the shortages influenced only one city (n = 19 215, 51.6%) and lasted only one month (n = 19 024, 55.8%). The occurrence (z-statistic (Z) = -3.83; P < 0.001), geographical coverage (Z = -2.02; P = 0.043), and duration (Z = -3.10; P = 0.002) of shortages showed decreasing trends over time. However, there was no significant change in the occurrence (Z = 0.90; P = 0.367), geographical coverage (Z = 1.70; P = 0.090), or duration (Z = -1.64; P = 0.102) of emergency medication shortages during the study period. Conclusions Decreasing trends were observed for the occurrence, geographical coverage, and duration of drug shortages in China; most were observed only in limited geographical areas and lasted short periods. More efforts are needed to alleviate the shortage of emergency and antineoplastic medicines.
Burden of headache disorders in China, 1990–2017: findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Abstract:Abstract Background Headache has emerged as a global public health concern. However, little is known about the burden from headache disorders in China. The aim of this work was to quantify the spatial patterns and temporal trends of burden from headache disorders in China. Methods Following the general analytic strategy used in the 2017 Global Burden of Disease study, we analyzed the prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) of headache and its main subcategories, including migraine and tension-type headache (TTH), by age, sex, year and 33 province-level administrative units in China from 1990 to 2017. Results Almost 112.4 million individuals were estimated to have headache disorders in 1990 in China, which rose to 482.7 million in 2017. The all-age YLDs increased by 36.2% from 1990 to 2017. Migraine caused 5.5 million YLDs, much higher than TTH (1.1 million) in 2017. The age-standardized prevalence and YLDs rate of headache remained stable and high in 2017 compared with 1990, respectively. The proportion of total headache YLDs in all diseases increased from 1990 to 2017 by 5.4%. A female preponderance was observed for YLDs and the YLDs were mainly in people aged 20~54 years. Conclusions Headache remains a huge health burden in China from 1990 to 2017, with prevalence and YLDs rates higher in eastern provinces than western provinces. The substantial increase in headache cases and YLDs represents an ongoing challenge in Chinese population. Our results can help shape and inform headache research and public policy throughout China, especially for females and middle-aged people.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To investigate the patient satisfaction with medications commonly used for migraine therapy in patients seen in headache clinic in China with emphasis on the evaluation of Chinese patent medicine (CPM) in relieving acute migraine attack.METHODS: Patients admitted at headache clinics in the neurological departments of four hospitals during April to October 2011 were enrolled in the investigation. The questionnaire was designed based on the validation of a diagnostic questionnaire for a population-based survey in China in 2009.RESULTS: Among 219 eligible patients, 58% had used CPM at the acute attack of migraine while the guideline-recommended treatments were seldom used. However, patients using CPMs were less satisfied than those using Western Medicines (WMs) in either single medication groups or mixed medication groups (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: Fifty-eight percent of the eligible respondents in Guangdong and Guangxi Province had used CPM at the acute attack of migraine, but based on our data, the effect of CPM on treating migraine attack was poor with low satisfaction compared with WMs. However, many factors may bias or explain our findings. This suggests the need for accelerated research in understanding patient choice, treatment availability, and use of medications.

Abstract:Headache disorders are problematic worldwide. China is no different. A population-based door-to-door survey revealed that the 1-year prevalence of primary headache disorders in China was 23.8%, constituting a major societal burden. Many headache centers and clinics have been established in China, and headache disorders (and associated stress) are receiving an increased level of expert attention. This review summarizes the outcomes of the epidemiological survey and the progress of clinical and basic research in China, describes the present situation in terms of headache diagnosis and treatment, and discusses the future of headache care in China.

Abstract:Background: Headache disorders have become a significant global public health issue, with a notably high prevalence observed in developing countries. However, few studies have assessed headache disorders trends in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of headache disorders in individuals across the BRICS, spanning the years 1990 to 2019. Methods: We obtained headache disorders data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study (GBD2019). This evaluation examined incidence rates, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) across demographic factors like age, gender, year, and country. Migraine and TTH were diagnosed based on the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) criteria. We used disease codes from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision to identify migraine and TTH cases. Statistical analyzes included calculating age-standardized rates and estimated annual percentage changes. Future disease burden was projected using a log-linear age-period-cohort model. Results: In 2019, India had the highest prevalence of migraine (213890207.93 cases) and TTH (374,453,700 cases). Brazil had the highest migraine age-standardized prevalence rate (18,331 per 100,000) and incidence rate (1,489 per 100,000). For TTH, India had the highest prevalence (26,160 per 100,000) while Russia had the highest incidence (11,512 per 100,000). From 1990 to 2019, China showed the greatest increase in migraine and TTH prevalence. India had the highest migraine (7,687,692) and TTH (741,392) DALYs in 2019. Conclusion: Migraine and TTH remain highly prevalent in BRICS nations, inflicting considerable disability burden. While India and China face mounting disease prevalence, Brazil contends with high incidence rates. Tailored interventions based on country-specific epidemiological profiles are warranted to mitigate the public health impact.

Abstract:Headache disorders are problematic worldwide. China is no different. A population‐based door‐to‐door survey revealed that the 1‐year prevalence of primary headache disorders in China was 23.8%, constituting a major societal burden. Many headache centers and clinics have been established in China, and headache disorders (and associated stress) are receiving an increased level of expert attention. This review summarizes the outcomes of the epidemiological survey and the progress of clinical and basic research in China, describes the present situation in terms of headache diagnosis and treatment, and discusses the future of headache care in China.
A multicenter retrospective study of antidepressant use in outpatient clinics in China pre- and post-COVID

Abstract:Background: Analyzing antidepressant prescribing in real-world settings can provide clinicians and health policymakers valuable information. Aim: This epidemiological study examined the status and trends in antidepressant prescribing among the Chinese population from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2022. Method: A retrospective study was conducted in three hospitals. Data were collected 2.5 years before and 2.5 years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed the number of patients diagnosed with depression and their corresponding antidepressant prescriptions. Using the chi-square test, stratified analyses were performed to explore the characteristics of these prescriptions in different ages and sexes. Results: The study included 124,355 patients and 400,840 antidepressant prescriptions. We observed fluctuating upward trends in the number of patients and antidepressant prescriptions. Post-COVID-19, the number of patients increased by 37.1% compared to the pre-pandemic period, and the number of antidepressant prescriptions rose by 88.3%. The three most frequently prescribed antidepressants for adolescents were sertraline, citalopram, and escitalopram. Among adults, citalopram, escitalopram, and sertraline were most common, while in older adults, citalopram, escitalopram, and mirtazapine were predominant. Male patients used mirtazapine, venlafaxine, paroxetine, bupropion, fluvoxamine, vortioxetine, and clomipramine more frequently compared to female patients, who were more likely to be prescribed citalopram, flupentixol/melitracen, agomelatine, and fluoxetine. Antidepressant monotherapy represented 76.6% of prescriptions, with the most common combination being antidepressants and anxiolytics. Conclusion: Over the past 5 years, both the number of patients and antidepressant prescriptions have shown upward trends, and the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted prescribing. Understanding the changes in antidepressant prescriptions can identify adherence to national guidelines.

Abstract:Objective:To analyze the prescriptions of antidepressant drugs in psychiatric inpatients of Shanghai Mental Health Center from 2009 to 2010. Method:Use one day time point survey to investigate the antidepressant prescriptions of all hospitalized patients in Shanghai Mental Health Center on each December 1st in 2009 and 2010. Results:In 2009(2 011 cases)and 2010(1 434 cases),there was no significant change in the distribution of diseases,which were schizophrenia,organic mental disorder and mood disorder from high to low. The psychiatric disorders that the most frequently used antidepressants were mood disorders,organic mental disorders,schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. The highest frequency of antidepressant drugs in turn were selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)and other antidepressant drugs(represented by venlafax-ine,mirtazapine and trazodone)and tricyclic antidepressants. The ratio of the prescribed dose and the defined daily dose was close to 1. Single antidepressant prescription(monotherapy)was the most common form in the prescription of antidepressant. The most common prescription of combination use of antidepressants and psycho-tropic drugs was antipsychotic drugs,sedatives hypnotics and mood stabilizers,and combination use of antide-pressants with one psychotropics was common. Conclusion:From 2009 to 2010,SSRIs is the first line of anti-depressants,and the prescription of the newer generation with other mechanisms of antidepressant prescription drugs increased significantly. The prescription dose of antidepressants are in the reasonable range.

Abstract:Background: Treatment effect of current pharmacotherapies for migraine is unsatisfying. Discovering new anti-migraine natural products and nutraceuticals from large collections of Chinese medicine classical literature may assist to address this gap. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search in the Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine (version 5.0) to obtain migraine-related citations, then screened and scored these citations to identify clinical management of migraine using oral herbal medicine in history. Information of formulae, herbs and symptoms were further extracted. After standardisation, these data were analysed using frequency analysis and the Apriori algorithm. Anti-migraine effects and mechanisms of actions of the main herbs and formula were summarised. Results: Among 614 eligible citations, the most frequently used formula was chuan xiong cha tiao san (CXCTS), and the most frequently used herb was chuan xiong . Dietary medicinal herbs including gan cao , bai zhi , bo he , tian ma and sheng jiang were identified. Strong associations were constructed among the herb ingredients of CXCTS formula. Symptoms of chronic duration and unilateral headache were closely related with herbs of chuan xiong , gan cao , fang feng , qiang huo and cha . Symptoms of vomiting and nausea were specifically related to herbs of sheng jiang and ban xia . Conclusion: The herb ingredients of CXCTS which presented anti-migraine effects with reliable evidence of anti-migraine actions can be selected as potential drug discovery candidates, while dietary medicinal herbs including sheng jiang , bo he , cha , bai zhi , tian ma , and gan cao can be further explored as nutraceuticals for migraine.
