Abstract:We study a stochastic scheduling on an unreliable machine with general up-times and general set-up times which is described by a group of partial differential equations with Dirac-delta functions in the boundary and initial conditions. In special case that the random processing rate of job $i,$ the random up-time rate of job $i$ and the random repair rate of job $i$ are constants, we determine the explicit expression of its time-dependent solution and give the asymptotic behavior of its time-dependent solution. Our result implies that $C_0-$semigroup theory is not suitable for this model. In general case, we determine the Laplace transform of its time-dependent solution. Next, we convert the model into an abstract Cauchy problem whose underlying operator is an evolution family. Finally, we leave some open problems.

Abstract:In consideration of some drawbacks of stochastic reliability method in theoretical and practical aspects, as well as the existence of insufficient and vague data in actual equipments design, the possbilistic reliability models of typically general systems are constructed in this paper. Characterizing the systems(components) failure behavior by possibility measures in place of probability measures, treating the systems (components) lifetime as fuzzy variables in the possibility space, and introducing possibilistic approaches into system reliability modeling and analysis, the possibilistic reliability theories are advanced based on possibilistic measurements. By expanding the universe of discourse, the derivation of system reliability models is simplified without loss of the nature of the problems to be solved, and proofs and calculations of possibilistic reliability of typical systems including series, parallel, series-parallel, parallel-series, and cold standby systems are much more straightforward than the traditional ones. The detailed application examples in system reliability analysis verify a possibilistic design framework on the general reliability models background, which provide some technical supports and guarantees for possibilistic reliability design and possibilistic reliability management in the case of limited statistical data.

Abstract:This study develops novel reliability models for discrete-time cold standby repairable systems with unreliable repair facility and retrial mechanism. In view of the situation that the state of some engineering systems cannot be continuously monitored, discrete distribution is used to describe the distribution of random variables involved in this paper. For the case that multiple events can occur simultaneously in the discrete-time system model, the priority order of multiple events occurring simultaneously is defined. Two different models are proposed based on two types of priority rules. The retrial mechanism of the components is considered in the case that the failure information of the system components cannot be successfully transmitted to the repair facility. The preventive maintenance (PM) and repair after the breakdown of the repair facility are considered. The key reliability indices are derived by using the iterative algorithm of the difference equation and the generative function method. The algorithms for calculating system state probability, key reliability indices and cost-benefit ratio (CBR) are designed. To demonstrate the impact of each parameter on the system reliability indices, numerical results are provided. The optimal repair rate configuration scheme is chosen using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to achieve the lowest possible CBR. The impact of the system model with or without PM on stationary availability and CBR is shown. In addition, the impact of the number of system components on a series of system performance indices is analyzed, and the optimal number of components of the system corresponding to the minimum value of CBR is obtained.

Abstract:The large-scale adoption of complex electromechanical systems (CMESs) renders it challenging to perform reliability assessments for such systems. In terms of the reliability evaluation of CMESs, previous studies generally assume that only binary states exist within the systems. However, owing to the stochastic failures and various operating characteristics of the system components, not only the good/bad states but also the performance levels within the system should be taken into account when analyzing the reliability of CMESs. Hence, we abstract the CMES as a multi-layer and multi-state network in which minimum maintenance units (MMUs) and three types of connections constitute nodes and edges in different layers. Furthermore, multi-state models for different MMUs in the CMES are developed based on universal generating functions (UGFs). Aggregation operators are then utilized to aggregate these UGFs to obtain the multi-state models. Subsequently, a cascading failure model is introduced to incorporate MMUs into the system reliability assessment. Thus, the effects of the operating mechanism and topological attributes can be considered in the reliability evaluation of the CEMS. Finally, the CRHX high-speed train system is used as an example to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method in the reliability assessment of the CMES.

Abstract:In this paper we present an exact method for redundancy optimization in series reliability networks with group constraints.The problem is to maximize the overall system reliability subject to certain resource constraints.The method is of a combined Lagrangian relaxation and Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition method.The bounds of subproblems are obtained by dynamic programming.To reduce the duality gap,we propose a special cut-and-partition scheme,thus ensuring the convergence of the method.Computational results are also reported to show the efficiency of the method.

Abstract:Many production systems have split and merge operations to increase production capacity and variety, improve product quality, and implement product control and scheduling policies. In this paper, we present analytical methods to model and analyse Bernoulli split and merge production systems with circulate, priority and percentage split/merge policies. The recursive procedures for performance analysis are derived, the convergence of the procedures and uniqueness of the solutions, along with the structural properties, are proved, and the accuracy of the estimation is justified with high precision.

Abstract:The competing failure system is quite common in real life, such as automotive system and aerospace system. Two distinct failure modes usually coexist in this type of system: gradual internal degradation and sudden external shock, where the occurrence of any failure mode can lead to the system failure. The system failure such as aircraft accident may cause a terrible loss of human life and property. Hence, it is worth reducing the rate of system failure by improving the system reliability. While, reliability model is the foundation of any research of reliability and epistemic uncertainty exists in the process of modeling and estimating. Therefore, we introduce uncertainty theory to investigate the competing failure system with epistemic uncertainty. The internal degradation and external shock of the system are characterized by an uncertain differential equation and an uncertain renewal process, respectively. The system reliability is defined as the uncertain measure that neither internal degradation nor external shock surpass corresponding thresholds. In addition, some reliability formulas are derived for the systems subjected to extreme shock, cumulative shock, running shock and δ -shock, respectively. Finally, a case study with respect to micro-electro-mechanical system is given to show how the proposed model is implemented.

Abstract:Machine configuration selection has a great impact on the system-level reliability of a manufacturing system, while the absence of proper consideration of the product quality and the tool degradation on tool failure when determining the machine-level reliability is likely to result in unanticipated machine downtimes or inappropriate maintenance decisions. A generic methodology is thus developed to incorporate both the machine-level and the system-level reliability analyses. Firstly, the machine-level reliability is investigated based on the product dimensional quality and the tool degradation. A novel machine-level quality reliability-integrated model is developed to address the interaction between product quality and tool reliability. The developed machine-level reliability model is then used to estimate the system-level reliability for a manufacturing system with selected configurations. Various hybrid configurations of the multi-operational manufacturing system are investigated in terms of the system-level reliability. The analytical procedure and the effectiveness of the proposed methodology are demonstrated through an example of a serial-parallel hybrid system for cylinder head gasket machining.

Abstract:Systems reliability plays an important role in systems design, operation and management. Systems reliability can be improved by adding redundant components or increasing the reliability levels of subsystems. Determination of the optimal amount of redundancy and reliability levels among various subsystems under limited resource constraints leads to a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem. The continuous relaxation of this problem in a complex system is a nonconvex nonseparable optimization problem with certain monotone properties. In this paper, we propose a convexification method to solve this class of continuous relaxation problems. Combined with a branch-and-bound method, our solution scheme provides an efficient way to find an exact optimal solution to integer reliability optimization in complex systems.

Abstract:Markov approach is applicable for reliability and availability modelling when time to failure and repair follow an exponential distribution. Since failure time of mechanical components follows Weibull distribution, Markov approach cannot be employed to these systems. In present work, Semi-Markov model, which is appropriate for repairable mechanical systems, is considered. In structural dependency, once a unit of a repairable system is failed due to one or more of its constituent components, the entire unit is taken for repair. Therefore, the repairs are considered at the unit level. This feature of structural dependency in the proposed approach addresses the problem of larger state space. The states at the unit level are derived from the component states to develop the system model. The solutions for reliability and availability are obtained using the Monte Carlo simulation. The suggested approach is realistic than the existing software's such as Rapid Algorithmic Prototyping Tool for Ordered Reasoning, Blocksim, etc., as failures and repairs are considered at different hierarchical levels. The recommended approach is illustrated for a centrifugal pumping system.

Abstract:The performance of many products may be simultaneously governed by multiple internal degradation processes, random shocks, and dynamic environments. This article presents a reliability model for systems subject to two degradation processes and random shocks under dynamic environments. Both multi-state and continuous degradation processes are considered and described by a Semi-Markov process and a monotone stochastic process, respectively. The model concurrently addressed the mutual degradation dependency and the effect of random shocks on the degradation processes. In addition, the influences of the environment on the degradation processes and random shocks were considered. Closed-form of reliability measures, such as reliability function and expected remaining useful life of the system with/without consideration of maintenance, were derived. The analytical model was applied to a study case from the literature to demonstrate its feasibility. We proposed a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation algorithm as an alternative solution for estimating system reliability measures. The results of the MC method and the literature verified the correctness of the theoretical result of the analytical model.

One of the main issues to apply the Markov method is the challenge called largeness, that is, the huge number of the states. A new method by building a simplified Markov model instead of a comprehensive model is presented to obtain system reliability and availability. And the error bound of the simplified Markov model is mainly discussed. The numerical analysis for a simple example is reported.

Abstract:Reliability of mechanical system is closely related to manufacturing quality of the parts, assembly quality of the system, and its working states, including working structure, load, lubricant, vibrancy, temperature, and so on. After the machine manufactured, the design, manufacture and assembly qualities determine the inherent reliability of the products. However, the uncertainty of the working state of the mechanical system at the working stage makes the randomness of the system failure rate of different time segments. This paper builds up the relationship of the system states and its reliability by state-driven reliability model which gives mature consideration of the co-effect of the influencing factors and uncertainty of working state. With this model, this paper gives the analyzing method of system failure rate stochastic characters and simulates the reliability changing curve by Monte Carlo simulation method. Finally, a spindle box of a machine tool was modeled and analyzed as an example.

Abstract:This paper proposes an MINLP model that represents the stochastic process of system failures and repairs as a continuous-time Markov chain, based on which it optimizes the selection of redundancy and the frequency of inspection and maintenance tasks for maximum profit. The model explicitly accounts for every possible state of the system. Effective decomposition and scenario reduction methods are also proposed. A small example with two processing stage is solved to demonstrate the impact of incorporating maintenance considerations. A decomposition method and a scenario reduction method are applied to this example and are shown to drastically reduce the computational effort. A larger example with four stages, which is not directly solvable, is also successfully solved using the proposed algorithm. Lastly, we show that the proposed model and algorithms are capable of solving a practical problem based on the air separation process example that motivated our work, which features multiple stages, potential units and failure modes.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for the analysis of a series-parallel safety-critical system where the system states can be distinguished into failure-safe and failure-dangerous. The method incorporates the Markov chain and universal generating function technique. In the model considered, both periodic inspection and repair (perfect and imperfect) of system elements are taken into account. The system state distributions and the overall system safety function are derived, based on the developed model. The proposed method is applicable to complex systems for analysing state distributions and it is also useful in decision-making such as determining the optimal proof-test interval or repair resource allocation. An illustrative example is given.

Abstract:This paper presents a new method for the reliability analysis of multi-stage production lines with unreliable machines and finite buffers, based on the modeling of probabilistic flow. First, a new concept-production balance ratio is introduced, and the related equations are derived. Second, the system state equations are solved analytically. The computational burden is reduced and the computing precision of the reliability index is increased. Then, the reliability formulae of system throughput, availability, mean sojorn time and mean inventory are derived. Finally, some examples are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this article, an iteration approach is introduced to study closed-loop production lines with a constant number of carriers. ABernoulli machine reliability model is assumed. The closed-loop systemis decomposed into multiple small loop lines and further down to two-machine loops, in which the distributions of carriers are derived. Then an iteration procedure is presented to estimate the interactions between the small loops to modify the carrier distributions. Upon convergence, the system production rate can be estimated using these distributions. The convergence of the procedure is proved analytically, and the accuracy of estimation is justified numerically. It is shown that the method has good accuracy and computational efficiency. In addition, a case study at an automotive assembly plant is introduced to illustrate the applicability of the method.
