Abstract:Human cerebral cortex displays various dynamics patterns under different states, however the mechanism how such diverse patterns can be supported by the underlying brain network is still not well understood. Human brain has a unique network structure with different regions of interesting to perform cognitive tasks. Using coupled neural mass oscillators on human cortical network and paying attention to both global and local regions, we observe a new feature of chimera states with multiple spatial scales and a positive correlation between the synchronization preference of local region and the degree of symmetry of the connectivity of the region in the network. Further, we use the concept of effective symmetry in the network to build structural and dynamical hierarchical trees and find close matching between them. These results help to explain the multiple brain rhythms observed in experiments and suggest a generic principle for complex brain network as a structure substrate to support diverse functional patterns.

Abstract:Understanding the human brain and its functions has always been an interesting and challenging problem. Recently, a significant progress on this problem has been achieved on the aspect of chimera state where a coexistence of synchronized and unsynchronized states can be sustained in identical oscillators. This counterintuitive phenomenon is closely related to the unihemispheric sleep in some marine mammals and birds and has recently gotten a hot attention in neural systems, except the previous studies in non-neural systems such as phase oscillators. This review will briefly summarize the main results of chimera state in neuronal systems and pay special attention to the network of cerebral cortex, aiming to accelerate the study of chimera state in brain networks. Some outlooks are also discussed.

Functional Modular Organization Unfolded by Chimera-Like Dynamics in a Large-Scale Brain Network Model

Abstract:The brain is organized as a complex network architecture, which can be mapped into structural (SC) and functional connectivity (FC) by advanced neuroimaging techniques. Achievements in brain network research have revealed that modularity is a universal trait in brain networks and may be vital for cognitive segregation and integration. Large-scale brain network modeling is a promising computational approach to combine neuroimaging data with generative rules for brain dynamics. Recently, it has been proposed that chimera states, a type of dynamics referring to the coexistence of coherent and incoherent participants, have traits in common with cognitive functions like segregated and integrated brain processing. Previous studies have reported the existence of chimera-like dynamics in large-scale brain network models, whereas they did not account for the relationship between chimera-like dynamics and corresponding functional modular organizations of the brain network. By specifying qualitatively different network dynamics in an anatomically-constrained brain network model, we compare the different modular organizations of FC unfolded by network dynamics. Our simulations reveal that chimera-like dynamics support a meaningful pattern of functional modular organization, which promotes a diversity of node roles with a distributed pattern of functional cartography. The distinct node roles in modular FC are also found to occur with a spatial preference in specific brain regions, and, to some extent, reflect the underlying structure constraints. Our results support the view that chimera-like dynamics is a functionally meaningful scenario that may play a fundamental role in the segregation and integration of brain functioning.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the data of cerebral cortex, we present a two-layered brain network model of coupled neurons where the two layers represent the left and right hemispheres of cerebral cortex, respectively, and the links between the two layers represent the inter-couplings through the corpus callosum. By this model we show that abundant patterns of synchronization can be observed, especially the chimera state, depending on the parameters of system such as the coupling strengths and coupling phase. Further, we extend the model to a more general two-layered network to better understand the mechanism of the observed patterns, where each hemisphere of cerebral cortex is replaced by a highly clustered subnetwork. We find that the number of inter-couplings is another key parameter for the emergence of chimera states. Thus, the chimera states come from a matching between the structure parameters such as the number of inter-couplings and clustering coefficient etc and the dynamics parameters such as the intra-, inter-coupling strengths and coupling phase etc. A brief theoretical analysis is provided to explain the borderline of synchronization. These findings may provide helpful clues to understand the mechanism of brain functions.

Condensation of Eigenmodes in Functional Brain Network and Its Correlation to Chimera State

Abstract:Condensation has long been a closely studied problem in statistical physics but little attention has been paid to neural science. Here, we discuss this problem in brain networks and discover the condensation of a functional brain network whereby all its eigenmodes are condensed only into a few or even a single eigenmode of the structural brain network. We show that the condensation occurs due to the emergence of both chimera states and brain functions from the structure of the brain network. Furthermore, the condensation only appears in the regions of chimera and the condensed eigenmodes are only limited to the lower ones. Condensation is confirmed across different levels of brain subnetworks, including hemispheres, cognitive subnetworks, and isolated cognitive subnetworks, which are further supported by resting-state functional connectivity from empirical data. Our results indicate that condensation could be a potential mechanism for performing brain functions.

Abstract:Neural synchronization plays a crucial role in cognitive functions and in performing tasks as it facilitates the transmission of information among the various brain subregions, and thus their communication. In this paper, we use an approach for analyzing and quantifying the emergence of synchronization patterns used previously in the study of data from toy dynamical models, in neurophysiological signals from a macaque monkey and particularly, from prefrontal-cortex intracranial recordings. Specifically, we study the emergence of synchronization patterns in neural ensembles recorded in the macaque brain while the monkey is performing the same delayed saccade task successfully for a number of times. We quantify the emergence of chimera-like states, metastability and coalition entropy in the recordings coming from intracranial arrays implanted in the macaque's brain. Our results show the emergence of spatio-temporal co-existing patterns of synchronized and desynchronized behavior, termed chimera-like states with small metastability during the stage where the target and the distractor appears on the screen and when the go cue appears on the screen for the monkey to report, namely the two most crucial stages of the trials to be termed successful. Finally, we perform a statistical hypothesis test on the calculated quantities over the successful trials and demonstrate that our findings are statistically significant in the sense that they cannot be attributed to randomness.

Abstract:The Common Model of Cognition (CMC) is a recently proposed, consensus architecture intended to capture decades of progress in cognitive science on modeling human and human-like intelligence. Because of the broad agreement around it and preliminary mappings of its components to specific brain areas, we hypothesized that the CMC could be a candidate model of the large-scale functional architecture of the human brain. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed functional MRI data from 200 participants and seven different tasks that cover a broad range of cognitive domains. The CMC components were identified with functionally homologous brain regions through canonical fMRI analysis, and their communication pathways were translated into predicted patterns of effective connectivity between regions. The resulting dynamic linear model was implemented and fitted using Dynamic Causal Modeling, and compared against six alternative brain architectures that had been previously proposed in the field of neuroscience (three hierarchical architectures and three hub-and-spoke architectures) using a Bayesian approach. The results show that, in all cases, the CMC vastly outperforms all other architectures, both within each domain and across all tasks. These findings suggest that a common set of architectural principles that could be used for artificial intelligence also underpins human brain function across multiple cognitive domains.
Fractal Basins as a Mechanism for the Nimble Brain

Abstract:An interesting feature of the brain is its ability to respond to disparate sensory signals from the environment in unique ways depending on the environmental context or current brain state. In dynamical systems, this is an example of multi-stability, the ability to switch between multiple stable states corresponding to specific patterns of brain activity/connectivity. In this article, we describe chimera states, which are patterns consisting of mixed synchrony and incoherence, in a brain-inspired dynamical systems model composed of a network with weak individual interactions and chaotic/periodic local dynamics. We illustrate the mechanism using synthetic time series interacting on a realistic anatomical brain network derived from human diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We introduce the so-called Vector Pattern State (VPS) as an efficient way of identifying chimera states and mapping basin structures. Clustering similar VPSs for different initial conditions, we show that coexisting attractors of such states reveal intricately "mingled" fractal basin boundaries that are immediately reachable. This could explain the nimble brain's ability to rapidly switch patterns between coexisting attractors.

Abstract:Patterns of functional interactions across distributed brain regions are suggested to provide a scaffold for the conscious processing of information, with marked topological alterations observed in loss of consciousness. However, establishing a firm link between macro-scale brain network organisation and conscious cognition requires direct investigations into neuropsychologically-relevant architectural modifications across systematic reductions in consciousness. Here we assessed both global and regional disturbances to brain graphs in a group of healthy participants across baseline resting state fMRI as well as two distinct levels of propofol-induced sedation. We found a persistent modular architecture, yet significant reorganisation of brain hubs that formed parts of a wider rich-club collective. Furthermore, the reduction in the strength of rich-club connectivity was significantly associated with the participants’ performance in a semantic judgment task, indicating the importance of this higher-order topological feature for conscious cognition. These results highlight a remarkable interplay between global and regional properties of brain functional interactions in supporting conscious cognition that is relevant to our understanding of clinical disorders of consciousness.

Abstract:Social skills probably emerge from the interaction between different neural processing levels. However, social neuroscience is fragmented into highly specialized, rarely cross-referenced topics. The present study attempts a systematic reconciliation by deriving a social brain definition from neural activity meta-analyses on social-cognitive capacities. The social brain was characterized by meta-analytic connectivity modeling evaluating coactivation in task-focused brain states and physiological fluctuations evaluating correlations in task-free brain states. Network clustering proposed a functional segregation into (1) lower sensory, (2) limbic, (3) intermediate, and (4) high associative neural circuits that together mediate various social phenomena. Functional profiling suggested that no brain region or network is exclusively devoted to social processes. Finally, nodes of the putative mirror-neuron system were coherently cross-connected during tasks and more tightly coupled to embodied simulation systems rather than abstract emulation systems. These first steps may help reintegrate the specialized research agendas in the social and affective sciences.

Abstract:We investigate the synchronization behavior and the emergence of chimera states in a system of two interacting populations of maps possessing chaotic neural-like dynamics. We characterize four collective states on the space of coupling parameters of the system: complete synchronization, generalized synchronization, chimera states, and incoherence. We quantify the information exchange between the two neuron populations in chimera states. We have found a well-defined direction of the flow of information in chimera states, from the desynchronized population to the synchronized one. The incoherent population functions as a driver of the coherent neuron population in a chimera state. This feature is independent of the population sizes or population partitions. Our results yield insight into the communication mechanisms arising in brain processes such as unihemispheric sleep and epileptic seizures that have been associated to chimera states.

Abstract:The idea that complex systems have a hierarchical modular organization originates in the early 1960s and has recently attracted fresh support from quantitative studies of large scale, real-life networks. Here we investigate the hierarchical modular (or "modules-within-modules") decomposition of human brain functional networks, measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 18 healthy volunteers under no-task or resting conditions. We used a customized template to extract networks with more than 1800 regional nodes, and we applied a fast algorithm to identify nested modular structure at several hierarchical levels. We used mutual information, 0 < I < 1, to estimate the similarity of community structure of networks in different subjects, and to identify the individual network that is most representative of the group. Results show that human brain functional networks have a hierarchical modular organization with a fair degree of similarity between subjects, I=0.63. The largest 5 modules at the highest level of the hierarchy were medial occipital, lateral occipital, central, parieto-frontal and fronto-temporal systems; occipital modules demonstrated less sub-modular organization than modules comprising regions of multimodal association cortex. Connector nodes and hubs, with a key role in inter-modular connectivity, were also concentrated in association cortical areas. We conclude that methods are available for hierarchical modular decomposition of large numbers of high resolution brain functional networks using computationally expedient algorithms. This could enable future investigations of Simon's original hypothesis that hierarchy or near-decomposability of physical symbol systems is a critical design feature for their fast adaptivity to changing environmental conditions.
Complex harmonics reveal low-dimensional manifolds of critical brain dynamics

Abstract:The brain needs to perform time-critical computations to ensure survival. A potential solution lies in the non-local, distributed computation at the whole-brain level made possible by criticality and amplified by the rare long-range connections found in the brain's unique anatomical structure. This non-locality can be captured by the mathematical structure of Schroedinger's wave equation, which is at the heart of the novel CHARM (Complex Harmonics decomposition) framework that performs the necessary dimensional manifold reduction able to extract non-locality in critical spacetime brain dynamics. Using a large neuroimaging dataset of over 1,000 people, CHARM captured the critical, non-local/long-range nature of brain dynamics and the underlying mechanisms were established using a precise whole-brain model. Equally, CHARM revealed the significantly different critical dynamics of wakefulness and sleep. Overall, CHARM is a promising theoretical framework for capturing the low-dimensionality of the complex network dynamics observed in neuroscience and provides evidence that networks of brain regions rather than individual brain regions are the key computational engines of critical brain dynamics.

Abstract:Human whole-brain functional connectivity networks have been shown to exhibit both local/quasilocal (e.g., a set of functional sub-circuits induced by node or edge attributes) and non-local (e.g., higher-order functional coordination patterns) properties. Nonetheless, the non-local properties of topological strata induced by local/quasilocal functional sub-circuits have yet to be addressed. To that end, we proposed a homological formalism that enables the quantification of higher-order characteristics of human brain functional sub-circuits. Our results indicate that each homological order uniquely unravels diverse, complementary properties of human brain functional sub-circuits. Noticeably, the H1 homological distance between rest and motor task was observed at both the whole-brain and sub-circuit consolidated levels, which suggested the self-similarity property of human brain functional connectivity unraveled by a homological kernel. Furthermore, at the whole-brain level, the rest–task differentiation was found to be most prominent between rest and different tasks at different homological orders: (i) Emotion task (H0), (ii) Motor task (H1), and (iii) Working memory task (H2). At the functional sub-circuit level, the rest–task functional dichotomy of the default mode network is found to be mostly prominent at the first and second homological scaffolds. Also at such scale, we found that the limbic network plays a significant role in homological reconfiguration across both the task and subject domains, which paves the way for subsequent investigations on the complex neuro-physiological role of such network. From a wider perspective, our formalism can be applied, beyond brain connectomics, to study the non-localized coordination patterns of localized structures stretching across complex network fibers.

Abstract:The discovery of resting state networks shifted the focus from the role of local regions in cognitive tasks to the ongoing spontaneous dynamics in global networks. Recently, efforts have been invested to reduce the complexity of brain activity recordings through the application of nonlinear dimensionality reduction algorithms. Here, we investigate how the interaction between these networks emerges as an organising principle in human cognition. We combine deep variational auto-encoders with computational modelling to construct a dynamical model of brain networks fitted to the whole-brain dynamics measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Crucially, this allows us to infer the interaction between these networks in resting state and 7 different cognitive tasks by determining the effective functional connectivity between networks. We found a high flexible reconfiguration of task-driven network interaction patterns and we demonstrate that can be used to classify different cognitive tasks. Importantly, compared to using all the nodes in a parcellation, we obtain better results by modelling the dynamics of interacting networks in both model and classification performance. These findings show the key causal role of manifolds as a fundamental organising principle of brain function, providing evidence that interacting networks are the computational engines brain during cognitive tasks.

Abstract:How cognitive task behavior is generated by brain network interactions is a central question in neuroscience. Answering this question calls for the development of novel analysis tools that can firstly capture neural signatures of task information with high spatial and temporal precision (the “where and when”), and then allow for empirical testing of alternative network models of brain function that link information to behavior (the “how”). We outline a novel network modeling approach suited to this purpose that is applied to non-invasive functional neuroimaging data in humans. We first dynamically decoded the spatiotemporal signatures of task information in the human brain by combining MRI-individualized source electroencephalography with multivariate pattern analysis. A newly developed network modeling approach - dynamic activity flow modeling - then simulated the flow of task-evoked activity over more causally interpretable (relative to standard functional connectivity approaches) resting-state functional connections (dynamic, lagged, direct and directional). We demonstrate the utility of this modeling approach by applying it to elucidate network processes underlying sensory-motor information flow in the brain, revealing accurate predictions of empirical response information dynamics underlying behavior. Extending the model towards simulating network lesions suggested a role for the cognitive control networks (CCNs) as primary drivers of response information flow, transitioning from early dorsal attention network-dominated sensory-to-response transformation to later collaborative CCN engagement during response selection. These results demonstrate the utility of the dynamic activity flow modeling approach in identifying the generative network processes underlying neurocognitive phenomena.

Abstract:<p>Recent overarching frameworks propose that various human social interactions are commonly supported by a set of fundamental neuropsychological processes, including social cognition, motivation, and cognitive control. However, it remains unclear whether brain networks implicated in these functional constructs are consistently engaged in diverse social interactions. Based on ample evidence from human brain imaging studies (342 contrasts, 7,234 participants, 3,328 foci), we quantitatively synthesized brain areas involved in broad domains of social interactions, including social interactions versus non-social contexts, positive/negative aspects of social interactions, social learning, and social norms. We then conducted brain network analysis on the ensuing brain regions and characterized the psychological function profiles of identified brain networks. Our findings revealed that brain regions consistently involved in diverse social interactions mapped onto default mode network, salience network, subcortical network and central executive network, which were respectively implicated in social cognition, motivation and cognitive control. These findings implicate a heuristic integrative framework to understand human social life from the perspective of component process and network integration.</p>

Abstract:The human brain is in constant flux, as distinct areas engage in transient communication to support basic behaviors as well as complex cognition. The collection of interactions between cortical and subcortical areas forms a functional brain network whose topology evolves with time. Despite the nontrivial dynamics that are germane to this networked system, experimental evidence demonstrates that functional interactions organize into putative brain systems that facilitate different facets of cognitive computation. We hypothesize that such dynamic functional networks are organized around a set of rules that constrain their spatial architecture - which brain regions may functionally interact - and their temporal architecture - how these interactions fluctuate over time. To objectively uncover these organizing principles, we apply an unsupervised machine learning approach called non-negative matrix factorization to time-evolving, resting state functional networks in 20 healthy subjects. This machine learning approach automatically groups temporally co-varying functional interactions into subgraphs that represent putative topological modes of dynamic functional architecture. We find that subgraphs are stratified based on both the underlying modular organization and the topographical distance of their strongest interactions: while many subgraphs are largely contained within modules, others span between modules and are expressed differently over time. The relationship between dynamic subgraphs and modular architecture is further highlighted by the ability of time-varying subgraph expression to explain inter-individual differences in module reorganization. Collectively, these results point to the critical role that subgraphs play in constraining the topography and topology of functional brain networks. More broadly, this machine learning approach opens a new door for understanding the architecture of dynamic functional networks during both task and rest states, and for probing alterations of that architecture in disease.
K-shell decomposition reveals hierarchical cortical organization of the human brain

However, in order to fully understand the topological structure of hubs, and how their profile reflect the brain’s global functional organization, one needs to go beyond the properties of a specific hub and examine the various structural layers that make up the network. To address this topic further, we applied an analysis known in statistical physics and network theory as k-shell decomposition analysis.The analysis was applied on a human cortical network, derived fromMRIDSI data of six participants. Such analysis enables us to portray a detailed account of cortical connectivity focusing on different neighborhoods of inter-connected layers across the cortex. Ourfindings reveal that the human cortex is highly connected and efficient, and unlike the internet network contains no isolated nodes. The cortical network is comprised of a nucleus alongside shells of increasing connectivity that formed one connected giant component, revealing the human brain’s global functional organization. All these components were further categorized into three hierarchies in accordancewith their connectivity profile, with each hierarchy reflecting different functional roles. Such amodelmay explain an efficient flowof information from the lowest hierarchy to the highest one, with each step enabling increased data integration.
