Abstract:Platinum-based materials have been regarded as the state-of-the-art electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but the characteristics of non-earth-abundant, high cost, and vulnerability to poisoning limited their widespread applications. Therefore, it is crucial to design and develop high-performance catalysts for ORR using earth-abundant and cost-effective materials. Carbon-based materials are a promising alternative because of their unique electronic properties and tunable nanostructured features, as well as their robustness. In this study, we developed an efficient ORR catalyst based on nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs). Carbon dots (C-dots) were used as efficient building blocks for incorporating heteroatoms and defect sites to modify the electronic structure of the PCNFs and optimize the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates during the 4e- ORR procedure. These properties enable the increased electrochemically active surface area of hetrostructures and provide an effective pathway for electron and mass transfer, ultimately leading to significantly improved electrocatalytic ORR performance.
