Abstract:Given a one-dimensional dynamical system we study its cover time, which quantifies the rate at which orbits become dense in the state space. Using transfer operator tools for dynamical systems with holes and inducing techniques, for a wide class of uniformly hyperbolic and non-uniformly hyperbolic systems we obtain an asymptotic formula for the expected cover time in terms of the decay rate of the measure of the ball of minimum measure. Applications include the Gauss map and Manneville-Pomeau maps.

Abstract:Graph covers are a way to describe continuous maps (and homeomorphisms) of a Cantor set, more generally than e.g.\ Bratteli-Vershik systems. Every continuous map on a zero-dimensional compact set can be expressed by a graph cover (e.g.\ non-minimality or aperiodicty are no restrictions). We give a survey on the construction, properties and some special cases of graph covers.

Abstract:We define the cover number of a graph $G$ by a graph class $\mathcal P$ as the minimum number of graphs of class $\mathcal P$ required to cover the edge set of $G$. Taking inspiration from a paper by Harary, Hsu and Miller, we find an exact formula for the cover number by the graph classes $\{ G \mid \chi(G) \leq f(\omega(G))\}$ for an arbitrary non-decreasing function $f$. After this, we establish a chain of inequalities with five cover numbers, the one by the class $\{ G \mid \chi(G) = \omega(G)\}$, by the class of perfect graphs, generalized split graphs, co-unipolar graphs and finally by bipartite graphs. We prove that at each inequality, the difference between the two sides can grow arbitrarily large. We also prove that the cover number by unipolar graphs cannot be expressed in terms of the chromatic or the clique number.

Abstract:We construct covering maps from infinite blowups of the n-dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG(n) to certain compact fractafolds based on SG(n). These maps are fractal analogs of the usual covering maps from the line to the circle. The construction extends work of the second author in the case n = 2, but a different method of proof is needed, which amounts to solving a Sudoku-type puzzle. We can use the covering maps to define the notion of periodic function on the blowups. We give a characterization of these periodic functions and describe the analog of Fourier series expansions. We study covering maps onto quotient fractalfolds. Finally, we show that such covering maps fail to exist for many other highly symmetric fractals.
Homotopy Covers of Graphs

Abstract:We develop a theory of $\times$-homotopy, fundamental groupoids and covering spaces that apply to non-simple graphs, generalizing existing results for simple graphs. We prove that $\times$-homotopies from finite graphs can be decomposed into moves which adjust at most one vertex at a time, generalizing the spider lemma of \cite{CS1}. We define a notion of homotopy covering map and develop a theory of universal covers and deck transformations, generalizing \cites{TardifWroncha, Matsushita} to non-simple graphs. We examine the case of reflexive graphs, where each vertex has at least one loop. We also prove that these homotopy covering maps satisfy a homotopy lifting property for arbitrary graph homomorphisms, generalizing path lifting results of \cites{Matsushita, TardifWroncha}.

Minimal covers with continuity-preserving transfer operators for topological dynamical systems

Abstract:Given a non-invertible dynamical system with a transfer operator, we show there is a minimal cover with a transfer operator that preserves continuous functions. We also introduce an essential cover with even stronger continuity properties. For one-sided sofic subshifts, this generalizes the Krieger and Fischer covers, respectively. Our construction is functorial in the sense that certain equivariant maps between dynamical systems lift to equivariant maps between their covers, and these maps also satisfy better regularity properties. As applications, we identify finiteness conditions which ensure that the thermodynamic formalism is valid for the covers. This establishes the thermodynamic formalism for a large class of non-invertible dynamical systems, e.g. certain piecewise invertible maps. When applied to semi-étale groupoids, our minimal covers produce étale groupoids which are models for $C^*$-algebras constructed by Thomsen. The dynamical covers and groupoid covers are unified under the common framework of topological graphs.

Abstract:Graph coverings are known to induce surjections of their critical groups. Here we describe the kernels of these morphisms in terms of data parametrizing the covering. Regular coverings are parametrized by voltage graphs, and the above kernel can be identified with a naturally defined voltage graph critical group. For double covers, the voltage graph is a signed graph, and the theory takes a particularly pleasant form, leading also to a theory of double covers of signed graphs.

Abstract:We study the basic $k$-covers of a bipartite graph $G$; the algebra $\AG$ they span, first studied by Herzog, is the fiber cone of the Alexander dual of the edge ideal. We characterize when $\AG$ is a domain in terms of the combinatorics of $G$; if follows from a result of Hochster that when $\AG$ is a domain, it is also Cohen-Macaulay. We then study the dimension of $\AG$ by introducing a geometric invariant of bipartite graphs, the "graphical dimension". We show that the graphical dimension of $G$ is not larger than $\dim(\AG)$, and equality holds in many cases (e.g. when $G$ is a tree, or a cycle). Finally, we discuss applications of this theory to the arithmetical rank.

Abstract:We introduce a broad class of equations that are described by a graph, which includes many well-studied systems. For these, we show that the number of solutions (or the dimension of the solution set) can be bounded by studying certain induced subgraphs. As corollaries, we obtain novel bounds in spectral graph theory on the multiplicities of graph eigenvalues, and in nonlinear dynamical system on the dimension of the equilibrium set of a network.

Asymptotic dimension for covers with controlled growth

Abstract:We prove various obstructions to the existence of regular maps (or coarse embeddings) between commonly studied spaces. For instance, there is no regular map (or coarse embedding) $\mathbb H^n\to\mathbb H^{n-1}\times Y$ for $n\geq 3$, or $(T_3)^n \to (T_3)^{n-1}\times Y$ whenever $Y$ is a bounded degree graph with subexponential growth, where $T_3$ is the $3$-regular tree. We also resolve a question of Benjamini-Schramm-Timár, proving that there is no regular map $\mathbb H^2 \to T_3 \times Y$ whenever $Y$ is a bounded degree graph with at most polynomial growth, and no quasi-isometric embedding whenever $Y$ has subexponential growth. Finally, we show that there is no regular map $F^n\to \mathbb Z\wr F^{n-1}$ where $F$ is the free group on two generators. To prove these results, we introduce and study generalizations of asymptotic dimension which allow unbounded covers with controlled growth. For bounded degree graphs, these invariants are monotone with respect to regular maps (hence coarse embeddings).

On high genus extensions of Negami's conjecture

Abstract:Negami's famous planar cover conjecture is equivalent to the statement that a connected graph can be embedded in the projective plane if and only if it has a projective planar cover. In 1999, Hliněný proposed extending this conjecture to higher genus non-orientable surfaces. In this paper, we put forward a natural extension that encompasses orientable surfaces as well; for every compact surface $\Sigma$, a connected graph $G$ has a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ if and only if $G$ is embeddable in a surface covered by $\Sigma$. As evidence toward this, we prove that for every surface $\Sigma$, the connected graphs with a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ have bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we show that these extensions of Negami's conjecture are decidable for every compact surface of sufficiently large Euler genus, surpassing what is known for Negami's original conjecture. We also prove the natural analogue for countable graphs embeddable into a compact (orientable) surface. More precisely, we prove that a connected countable graph $G$ has a finite ply cover that embeds into a compact (orientable) surface if and only if $G$ embeds into a compact (orientable) surface. Our most general theorem, from which these results are derived, is that there is a constant $c>0$ such that for every surface $\Sigma$, there exists a decreasing function $p_\Sigma:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ with $\lim_{g\to \infty}p_\Sigma(g) =0$ such that every finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ of any connected graph with Euler genus $g\ge c$ has ply at most $p_\Sigma(g)$.

Abstract:We first consider the class K of graphs on a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space with continuous chromatic number at least three. We provide a concrete basis of size continuum for K made up of countable graphs, comparing them with the quasi-order associated with injective continuous homomorphisms. We prove that the size of such a basis is sharp, using odometers. However, using odometers again, we prove that there is no antichain basis in K, and provide infinite descending chains in K. Our method implies that the equivalence relation of flip conjugacy of minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor space is Borel reducible to the equivalence relation associated with our quasi-order. We also prove that there is no antichain basis in the class of graphs on a zero-dimensional Polish space with continuous chromatic number at least three. We study the graphs induced by a continuous function, and show that any basis for the class of graphs induced by a homeomorphism of a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space with continuous chromatic number at least three must have size continuum, using odometers or subshifts.

From Combinatorics to Geometry: The Dynamics of Graph Gradient Diffusion

Abstract:We discuss a link between graph theory and geometry that arises when considering graph dynamical systems with odd interactions. The equilibrium set in such systems is not a collection of isolated points, but rather a union of manifolds, which may intersect creating singularities and may vary in dimension. We prove that geometry and stability of such manifolds are governed by combinatorial properties of the underlying graph. In particular, we derive an upper bound on the dimension of the equilibrium set using graph homology and a lower bound using graph coverings. Moreover, we show how graph automorphisms relate to geometric singularities and prove that the decomposition of a graph into $2$-vertex-connected components induces a decomposition of the equilibrium set that preserves three notions of stability.

Abstract:A graphoid is a mixed multigraph with multiple directed and/or undirected edges, loops, and semiedges. A covering projection of graphoids is an onto mapping between two graphoids such that at each vertex, the mapping restricts to a local bijection on incoming edges and outgoing edges. Naturally, as it appears, this definition displays unusual behaviour since the projection of the corresponding underlying graphs is not necessarily a graph covering. Yet, it is still possible to grasp such coverings algebraically in terms of the action of the fundamental monoid and combinatorially in terms of voltage assignments on arcs. In the present paper, the existence theorem is formulated and proved in terms of the action of the fundamental monoid. A more conventional formulation in terms of the weak fundamental group is possible because the action of the fundamental monoid is permutational. The standard formulation in terms of the fundamental group holds for a restricted class of coverings, called homogeneous. Further, the existence of the universal covering and the problems related to decomposing regular coverings via regular coverings are studied in detail. It is shown that with mild adjustments in the formulation, all the analogous theorems that hold in the context of graphs are still valid in this wider setting.

Abstract:We consider Abelian covers of compact hyperbolic surfaces. We establish an asymptotic expansion of the correlations for the horocycle flow on $\mathbb{Z}^d$-covers, thus proving a strong form of Krickeberg mixing. We also prove that the spectral measures around $0$ of the Casimir operators on any increasing sequence of finite Abelian covers converge weakly to an absolutely continuous measure.

Growth of k-dimensional systoles in congruence coverings

Abstract:We study growth of absolute and homological $k$-dimensional systoles of arithmetic $n$-manifolds along congruence coverings. Our main interest is in the growth of systoles of manifolds whose real rank $r > 1$. We observe, in particular, that in some cases for $k = r$ the growth function tends to oscillate between a power of a logarithm and a power function of the degree of the covering. This is a new phenomenon. We also prove the expected polylogarithmic and constant power bounds for small and large $k$, respectively.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the equivariant covering type of a space X on which a finite group G acts and study its properties. The equivariant covering type measures the size of G-equivariant good covers of X and is thus an extension of the covering type of a space, introduced by Karoubi and Weibel. We show that the equivariant covering type is a G-homotopy invariant and describe its relation with other G-invariants, like the equivariant LS-category, G-genus, and the multiplicative structures of equivariant cohomology theories. We also compute the G-covering type of regular G-graphs, give estimates for orientation-preserving actions on surfaces and for the projectivizations of complex representations of G and cohomology spheres. As an application, we derive estimates of sizes of minimal G-triangulations for various G-spaces.

Abstract:In this note we prove an effective characterization of when two finite-degree covers of a connected, orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic are isomorphic in terms of which curves have simple elevations, weakening the hypotheses to consider curves with explicitly bounded self-intersection number. As an application we show that for sufficiently large N, the set of unmarked traces associated to simple closed curves in a generically chosen representation to SL(N, R) distinguishes between pairs of non-isomorphic covers.
