Abstract:Big Data are revolutionizing nearly every aspect of the modern society. One area where this can have a profound positive societal impact is the field of Health Care Informatics (HCI), which faces many challenges. The key idea behind this study is: can we use some of the experience and technical and methodological solutions from the fields that have successfully adapted to the Big Data era, namely astronomy and space science, to help accelerate the progress of HCI? We illustrate this with examples from the Virtual Observatory framework, and the NCI EDRN project. An effective sharing and reuse of tools, methods, and experiences from different fields can save a lot of effort, time, and expense. HCI can thus benefit from the proven solutions to big data challenges from other domains.

Addressing these needs requires the integration of computational experts, engineers, designers, and healthcare professionals to develop user-friendly systems and shared terminologies. The widespread adoption of large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 and Claude 3 highlights the importance of making complex data accessible to non-specialists. The Stanford Data Ocean (SDO) strives to mitigate these challenges through a scalable, cloud-based platform that supports data management for various data types, advanced research, and personalized learning in precision medicine. SDO provides AI tutors and AI-powered data visualization tools to enhance educational and research outcomes and make data analysis accessible for users from diverse educational backgrounds. By extending engagement and cutting-edge research capabilities globally, SDO particularly benefits economically disadvantaged and historically marginalized communities, fostering interdisciplinary biomedical research and bridging the gap between education and practical application in the biomedical field.

Abstract:In this article, I discuss areas where scientists can have impact and that I feel are important for the future of innovative research and societal impacts. Initially, I summarise my research career. I then move on to problem solving, using techniques such as functional neuroimaging and psychopharmacology, and new developments, such as the application of the computerised neuropsychological tests CANTAB, which I co-invented. CANTAB was inspired by the need for early detection, pharmacological treatment and neuropsychological understanding of cognitive deficits in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. Finally, I address neuroethical and societal concerns through books, articles and the media and affected UK government policy through the Foresight Project. In future, young scientists hopefully will contribute more time to these important areas of policy development and public engagement.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a tool to enhance various medical image analysis tasks with accuracies comparable to expert clinicians. Computer assisted detection and diagnosis, and image segmentation and registration have significantly benefited from AI. However, integration of AI into the clinical workflow has been slow due to requirements for libraries that are specific to each model, and also environments that are specific to clinical centers. These challenges demonstrate the need for an AI-based solution that can be integrated into any environment with minimum hardware and software overhead. Tesseract-Medical Imaging (Tesseract-MI) is an open-source, web-based platform which enables deployment of AI models while simultaneously providing standard image viewing and reporting schemes. The goal of Tesseract-MI is to augment 3D medical imaging and provide a 4th dimension (AI) when requested by a user. As a case study, we demonstrate the utility of our platform and present ProstateCancer.ai, a web application for identification of clinically significant prostate cancer in MRI.

Abstract:Mounting evidence has highlighted the implementation of big data handling and management in the healthcare industry to improve the clinical services. Various private and public companies have generated, stored, and analyzed different types of big healthcare data, such as omics data, clinical data, electronic health records, personal health records, and sensing data with the aim to move in the direction of precision medicine. Additionally, with the advancement in technologies, researchers are curious to extract the potential involvement of artificial intelligence and machine learning on big healthcare data to enhance the quality of patient's lives. However, seeking solutions from big healthcare data requires proper management, storage, and analysis, which imposes hinderances associated with big data handling. Herein, we briefly discuss the implication of big data handling and the role of artificial intelligence in precision medicine. Further, we also highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence in integrating and analyzing the big data that offer personalized treatment. In addition, we briefly discuss the applications of artificial intelligence in personalized treatment, especially in neurological diseases. Lastly, we discuss the challenges and limitations imposed by artificial intelligence in big data management and analysis to hinder precision medicine.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform every facet of cardiovascular practice and research. The exponential rise in technology powered by AI is defining new frontiers in cardiovascular care, with innovations that span novel diagnostic modalities, new digital native biomarkers of disease, and high-performing tools evaluating care quality and prognosticating clinical outcomes. These digital innovations promise expanded access to cardiovascular screening and monitoring, especially among those without access to high-quality, specialized care historically. Moreover, AI is propelling biological and clinical discoveries that will make future cardiovascular care more personalized, precise, and effective. The review brings together these diverse AI innovations, highlighting developments in multimodal cardiovascular AI across clinical practice and biomedical discovery, and envisioning this new future backed by contemporary science and emerging discoveries. Finally, we define the critical path and the safeguards essential to realizing this AI-enabled future that helps achieve optimal cardiovascular health and outcomes for all.

Abstract:The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized various scientific fields, particularly in medicine, where it has enabled the modeling of complex relationships from massive datasets. Initially, AI algorithms focused on improved interpretation of diagnostic studies such as chest X-rays and electrocardiograms in addition to predicting patient outcomes and future disease onset. However, AI has evolved with the introduction of transformer models, allowing analysis of the diverse, multimodal data sources existing in medicine today. Multimodal AI holds great promise in more accurate disease risk assessment and stratification as well as optimizing the key driving factors in cardiometabolic disease: blood pressure, sleep, stress, glucose control, weight, nutrition, and physical activity. In this article we outline the current state of medical AI in cardiometabolic disease, highlighting the potential of multimodal AI to augment personalized prevention and treatment strategies in cardiometabolic disease.

Abstract:The future of healthcare is an organic blend of technology, innovation, and human connection. As artificial intelligence (AI) is gradually becoming a go-to technology in healthcare to improve efficiency and outcomes, we must understand our limitations. We should realize that our goal is not only to provide faster and more efficient care, but also to deliver an integrated solution to ensure that the care is fair and not biased to a group of sub-population. In this context, the field of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, which encompasses a wide range of conditions—from heart failure to stroke—has made some advances to provide assistive tools to care providers. This article aimed to provide an overall thematic review of recent development focusing on various AI applications in cardio-cerebrovascular diseases to identify gaps and potential areas of improvement. If well designed, technological engines have the potential to improve healthcare access and equitability while reducing overall costs, diagnostic errors, and disparity in a system that affects patients and providers and strives for efficiency.

Abstract:Introduction The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into cosmetic medicine promises to revolutionize the field by enhancing diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care. Objective This manuscript explores the current adoption and perceptions of AI among professionals in the realm of cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery, utilizing insights from the IMCAS Congress 2024 attendees. Methods A survey employing a digital questionnaire with 14 questions was distributed among attendees of the IMCAS Congress 2024 to evaluate their familiarity with AI, usage in clinical practice, perceived advantages, and concerns regarding data privacy and security. Results The survey revealed that a majority of respondents are familiar with AI's potential in cosmetic medicine, yet there is a notable discrepancy between awareness and actual application in practice. Concerns over data privacy and a pronounced need for further training were also highlighted. Conclusion Despite recognizing AI's benefits in cosmetic medicine, significant barriers such as data privacy concerns and the need for more comprehensive training resources must be addressed. Enhancing education on AI‐applications and developing strategies to mitigate privacy risks are imperative for leveraging AI's full potential in improving patient care and outcome in cosmetic medicine.

Abstract:Big data and associated approaches to analyse it are on the rise, especially in healthcare settings. This growth is also seen with unique applications in the field of dermatology. While big data offer a plethora of opportunity for improving our current understanding of disease and ability to deliver care, as with any technology innovation, the potential pitfalls should be addressed. In this piece, we highlight opportunities and challenges associated with big data in dermatology. Opportunities include large and novel data sources that may offer a wealth of information, automated detection, classification and diagnostics and improved public health monitoring. Challenges include data quality, issues of interpretability and disparities within artificial intelligence (AI) training data sets. Clinicians and researchers in the field should be aware of these developments within the field of big data to understand how best it may be used toward improving patient care and health outcomes, particularly in the field of dermatology.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is a nontechnical, popular term that refers to machine learning of various types but most often to deep neural networks. Cardiology is at the forefront of AI in medicine. For this review, we searched PubMed and MEDLINE databases with no date restriction using search terms related to AI and cardiology. Articles were selected for inclusion on the basis of relevance. We highlight the major achievements in recent years in nearly all areas of cardiology and underscore the mounting evidence suggesting how AI will take center stage in the field. Artificial intelligence requires a close collaboration among computer scientists, clinical investigators, clinicians, and other users in order to identify the most relevant problems to be solved. Best practices in the generation and implementation of AI include the selection of ideal data sources, taking into account common challenges during the interpretation, validation, and generalizability of findings, and addressing safety and ethical concerns before final implementation. The future of AI in cardiology and in medicine in general is bright as the collaboration between investigators and clinicians continues to excel.
