Abstract:Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites undergo a period of rapid development driven by ever-increasing user demands, reduced costs, and technological progress. Since there is a paucity of literature on the security and reliability issues of LEO Satellite Communication Systems (SCSs), we aim to fill this knowledge gap. Specifically, we critically appraise the inherent characteristics of LEO SCSs and elaborate on their security and reliability requirements. In light of this, we further discuss their vulnerabilities, including potential security attacks launched against them and reliability risks, followed by outlining the associated lessons learned. Subsequently, we discuss the corresponding security and reliability enhancement solutions, unveil a range of trade-offs, and summarize the lessons gleaned. Furthermore, we shed light on several promising future research directions for enhancing the security and reliability of LEO SCSs, such as integrated sensing and communication, computer vision aided communications, as well as challenges brought about by mega-constellation and commercialization. Finally, we summarize the lessons inferred and crystallize the take-away messages in our design guidelines.

Abstract:The security mechanisms for terrestrial network are not appropriate for satellite communication due to the particularity of space environment.The state of the art in security for satellite communication systems was surveyed.Firstly,the security vulnerabilities of satellite communication systems were presented.Secondly,various possible threats and countermeasures were analyzed among physical layer,data link layer,network layer and transport layer.Particularly,representative solutions for survivability,anti-jamming,authentication and key management were illustrated,and a comparison and assessment of their merits and faults were made.Finally,the research was presented which was still worth to do in the future.
Perturbed ISL Analysis in LEO Satellite Constellation

Abstract:In the satellite mobile communication systems, there are direct channels among satellites by inter-satellite link (ISL), which could increase the autonomy of the constellation network. The relative position between satellites in the low earth orbit (LEO) constellation is time-varying, and the satellites are not continuously visible. Due to the impact of perturbation, the ISL has a first-order long-term change, which increases satellite visibility and the complexity of inter-satellite transmission loss analysis. We conduct a series of theoretical derivations and simulations. A more comprehensive LEO constellation ISL numerical model has been established. Transmission loss can be analyzed by this model. The research work provides some theoretical foundations for the research on key technologies of constellations.

Abstract:Satellite-based Communication (SATCOM) systems are gaining renewed momentum in Industry and Academia, thanks to innovative services introduced by leading tech companies and the promising impact they can deliver towards the global connectivity objective tackled by early 6G initiatives. On the one hand, the emergence of new manufacturing processes and radio technologies promises to reduce service costs while guaranteeing outstanding communication latency, available bandwidth, flexibility, and coverage range. On the other hand, cybersecurity techniques and solutions applied in SATCOM links should be updated to reflect the substantial advancements in attacker capabilities characterizing the last two decades. However, business urgency and opportunities are leading operators towards challenging system trade-offs, resulting in an increased attack surface and a general relaxation of the available security services.In this paper, we tackle the cited problems and present a comprehensive survey on the link-layer security threats, solutions, and challenges faced when deploying and operating SATCOM systems. Specifically, we classify the literature on security for SATCOM systems into two main branches, i.e., physical-layer security and cryptography schemes. Then, we further identify specific research domains for each of the identified branches, focusing on dedicated security issues, including, e.g., physical-layer confidentiality, anti-jamming schemes, anti-spoofing strategies, and quantum-based key distribution schemes. For each of the above domains, we highlight the most essential techniques, peculiarities, advantages, disadvantages, lessons learned, and future directions. Finally, we also identify emerging research topics whose additional investigation by Academia and Industry could further attract researchers and investors, ultimately unleashing the full potential behind ubiquitous satellite communications.

Abstract:Satellite internet serves as an indispensable component of the upcoming sixth-generation networks for providing global broadband internet access service. Due to the open nature of satellite-ground communication, security issue in satellite internet has always been an important concern for both industry and academia. Although many researchers focus on secure communications in satellite internet, the literature is surprisingly sparse, with no comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art security techniques. This paper provides an in-depth survey of secure communications for various satellite internet scenarios. Based on different security mechanisms, we first categorize the existing works of secure communications in satellite internet into two categories: cryptography-based and physical layer security-based. The former includes classical encryption-based and quantum encryption-based secure communication, and the latter is further divided into precoding-based, cooperative jamming-based, relay selection-based, and physical-layer authentication-based secure communication depending on the applied techniques. Finally, we provide some future research directions.

Abstract:The rapid evolution of communication technologies, compounded by recent geopolitical events such as the Viasat cyberattack in February 2022, has highlighted the urgent need for fast and reliable satellite missions for military and civil security operations. Consequently, this paper examines two Earth observation (EO) missions: one utilizing a single low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite and another through a network of LEO satellites, employing a secure-by-component design strategy. This approach begins by defining the scope of technical security engineering, decomposing the system into components and data flows, and enumerating attack surfaces. Then it proceeds by identifying threats to low-level components, applying secure-by-design principles, redesigning components into secure blocks in alignment with the Space Attack Research & Tactic Analysis (SPARTA) framework, and crafting shall statements to refactor the system design, with a particular focus on improving the security of the link segment.

Abstract:Compared with terrestrial communication, satellite communication has played a crucial role in 6G communication as a result of wide-area coverage characteristics. Among them, beamforming scheduling and information security are critical research issues to improve system transmission performance. However, in geostationary earth orbit (GEO)-based satellite communication systems, owing to the wide-area coverage, ground users are susceptible to inter-beam interference caused by multibeam antennas at the satellite, and the information received by terrestrial users may be eavesdropped by air or terrestrial eavesdroppers. To this end, in this paper, we propose a new robust security transmission strategy by combining beamforming and artificial noise (AN) techniques. Specifically, based on the actual satellite communication network scenario, the uncertain channel models are formulated as bounded uncertainty sets by considering the impact of imperfect channel state information of both legitimate and wiretap channels. Then, we build a boundedconstrained beamforming optimization to maximize the sum rate of legitimate users, while guaranteeing the constraints of total transmit power on the satellite and the minimum security rate of each legitimate user. Since the original problem is non-convex and mathematically intractable, we jointly exploit the successive convex approximation, Taylor series expansion, S-Procedure, and the semi-definite relaxation approach, with which the original problem can be transformed into a tractable one with a series of linear matrix inequality constraints. Furthermore, we propose an iterative algorithm to obtain the optimal beamforming and AN vectors. Finally, simulation results show that, compared with the existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm has better security and robustness.

Abstract:The extensive deployment of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites introduces significant security challenges for communication security issues in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. With the rising number of satellites potentially acting as eavesdroppers, integrating physical-layer security (PLS) into satellite communications has become increasingly critical. However, these studies are facing challenges, such as dealing with dynamic topology difficulties, limitations in interference analysis, and the high complexity of performance evaluation. To address these challenges, for the first time, we investigate the PLS strategies in satellite communications using the stochastic geometry (SG) analytical framework. We consider the uplink communication scenario in an LEO-enabled IoT network, where the multitier satellites from different operators, respectively, serve as the legitimate receivers and eavesdroppers. In this scenario, we derive low-complexity analytical expressions for the security performance metrics, namely availability probability, successful communication probability, and secure communication probability. By introducing the power allocation parameters, we incorporate the artificial noise (AN) technique, which is an important PLS strategy, into this the analytical framework, and evaluate the gains it brings to secure transmission. In addition to the AN technique, we also analyse the impact of constellation configuration, physical-layer parameters, and network layer parameters on the aforementioned metrics.

Evaluating the Security of Satellite Systems

Abstract:Satellite systems are facing an ever-increasing amount of cybersecurity threats as their role in communications, navigation, and other services expands. Recent papers have examined attacks targeting satellites and space systems; however, they did not comprehensively analyze the threats to satellites and systematically identify adversarial techniques across the attack lifecycle. This paper presents a comprehensive taxonomy of adversarial tactics, techniques, and procedures explicitly targeting LEO satellites. First, we analyze the space ecosystem including the ground, space, Communication, and user segments, highlighting their architectures, functions, and vulnerabilities. Then, we examine the threat landscape, including adversary types, and capabilities, and survey historical and recent attacks such as jamming, spoofing, and supply chain. Finally, we propose a novel extension of the MITRE ATT&CK framework to categorize satellite attack techniques across the adversary lifecycle from reconnaissance to impact. The taxonomy is demonstrated by modeling high-profile incidents, including the Viasat attack that disrupted Ukraine's communications. The taxonomy provides the foundation for the development of defenses against emerging cyber risks to space assets. The proposed threat model will advance research in the space domain and contribute to the security of the space domain against sophisticated attacks.

Abstract:Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations have emerged as a promising architecture integrated with ground networks, which can offer high-speed Internet services to global users. However, the security challenges faced by satellite networks are increasing, with the potential for a few satellite failures to trigger cascading failures and network outages. Therefore, enhancing the robustness of the network in the face of cascading failures is of utmost importance. This paper aims to explore the robustness of LEO satellite networks when encountering cascading failures and then proposes a modeling method based on virtual nodes and load capacity. In addition, considering that the ground station layout and the number of connected satellites together determine the structure of the final LEO satellite network, we here propose an improved ground station establishment method that is more suitable for the current network model. Finally, the robustness of the LEO satellite networks is deeply studied under two different attacks and cost constraints. Simulations of LEO satellite networks with different topologies show that the maximum load attacks have a destructive impact on the network, which can be mitigated by adjusting the topology and parameters to ensure normal network operation. The current model and related results provide practical insights into the protection of LEO satellite networks, which can mitigate cascading risks and enhance the robustness of LEO systems.

Abstract:Recently, satellite communication (Sat-Com) has developed rapidly, and its security is critical. In this letter, we investigate the security performance for an uplink low earth orbit (LEO) Sat-Com system, where the cooperative UAV is employed to send jamming signals against the reconnaissance satellite. In particular, the uplink transmission is based on the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) technique, in order to combat the severe Doppler effect caused by the high mobility of the LEO satellite. As a pioneer work, we derive the closed-form expression for the security outage probability (SOP) at the legitimate receiver, where a novel moment matching approach is used for finding a summed probability distribution function (PDF) of the shadowed-Rician (SR) distributed terms. Furthermore, we analyze the SOP advantage achieved by the OTFS scheme over the traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Simulation results validate the theoretical results for SOP performance of the uplink LEO Sat-Com, and show the effectiveness of employing UAV jammer in terms of enhancing secrecy transmission.

Abstract:Satellite communications emerged as a promising extension to terrestrial networks in future 6G network research due to their extensive coverage in remote areas and ability to support the increasing traffic rate and heterogeneous networks. Like other wireless communication technologies, satellite signals are transmitted in a shared medium, making them vulnerable to attacks, such as eavesdropping, jamming, and spoofing. A good candidate to overcome these issues is physical layer security (PLS), which utilizes physical layer characteristics to provide security, especially due to its suitability for resource-limited devices such as satellites and IoT devices. In this paper, we provide a thorough and up-to-date review of PLS solutions for securing satellite communication. We classify main satellite applications into five domains, namely: Satellite-terrestrial, satellite-based IoT, Satellite navigation systems, FSO-based, and inter-satellite. In each domain, we discuss and investigate how PLS can be used to improve the system's overall security, preserve some desirable security properties and resist popular attacks. Finally, we highlight a few gaps in the related literature and discuss open research problems and opportunities for leveraging PLS in satellite communication.

Abstract:It has practical significance to carry out research on physical layer security in satellite communication under the condition that our country has paid high attention to technology research on integrated space-terrestrial network information security. This paper addresses multiservice satellite communication using physical layer security, proposes a novel design subject to different speed and data transfer rate demand among fixed, portable, vehicle, shipborne and airborne receivers. For fixed receivers, this paper proposes a resource optimization method of satellite communication using physical layer security subject to different data transfer rate demand in many receivers. For portable, vehicle and shipborne receivers at low speed, this paper uses mean physical layer secrecy capacity to characterize the secure performance of satellite communication using physical layer security. For airborne receivers at high speed, this paper analyzes the impact of the high-speed relative motion between the satellite and the receiver on channel model, which is combined with mean physical layer secrecy capacity to characterize the secure performance of satellite communication using physical layer security.

Abstract:The ultra-dense low earth orbit (LEO) integrated satellite-terrestrial networks (UDLEO-ISTN) can bring lots of benefits in terms of wide coverage, high capacity, and strong robustness. Meanwhile, the broadcasting and open natures of satellite links also reveal many challenges for transmission security protection, especially for eavesdropping defence. How to efficiently take advantage of the LEO satellite's density and ensure the secure communication by leveraging physical layer security with the cooperation of jammers deserves further investigation. To our knowledge, using satellites as jammers in UDLEO-ISTN is still a new problem since existing works mainly focused on this issue only from the aspect of terrestrial networks. To this end, we study in this paper the cooperative secrecy communication problem in UDLEO-ISTN by utilizing several satellites to send jamming signal to the eavesdroppers. An iterative scheme is proposed as our solution to maximize the system secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) via jointly optimizing transmit power allocation and user association. Extensive experiment results verify that our designed optimization scheme can significantly enhance the system SEE and achieve the optimal power allocation and user association strategies.

Abstract:The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems have been deployed around the world, and the sixth generation (6G) networks have become the focus of research interest, whose technical roadmap has been put forward. Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication, which is expected to bridge the digital divide and provide ubiquitous access for mobile terminals anytime and anywhere, will play an important role in 6G and beyond networks. LEO satellite communications help to achieve the key performance indicators as specified in emerging 6G applications. In addition, 6G technologies such as Tera Hertz, digital twin, intelligent reflecting surface, artificial intelligence, etc., also create many new applications for LEO satellite communications. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview on LEO satellite communications in 6G and beyond mobile networks from the perspectives of its technologies, applications, and challenges.

Abstract:Firstly,the current situation of satellite remote sensing,communication,and computing systems was systematically analyzed,and the real-time remote sensing dilemma existing in the traditional satellite remote sensing systems and the satellite remote sensing communication integrated system architecture was deeply analyzed.Secondly,a multi-satellite and satellite-ground coordination inte-grated system architecture for satellite remote sensing,communication,and computation was put forward,and the key components and the working theories modes of the architecture were introduced in detail.Thirdly,the advantages of this architecture were demonstrated and the feasibility of key technologies was systematically clarified.Finally,the simulation and analysis method based on this architec-ture,which could reach minute-level remote sensing tasks with high timeliness and high potential application value compared with the traditional mode,was elaborated.
