Abstract:Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) has emerged as a valuable tool for evaluating secondary batteries due to their efficiency and accuracy. However, interpreting the multifaceted impedance spectra derived from EIS demands a comprehensive grasp of the electrochemical context. This study focuses on devising and applying an Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) model customized specifically for deciphering the intricacies of zinc-ion batteries. The model construction is tailored to the battery's complexities, enabling extraction of circuit elements that faithfully depict the system's dynamics. Moreover, this research investigates the relationship between parameters of the governing equations. Through experimental validation employing real-time EIS measurements from a zinc-ion battery prototype, the reliability and efficacy of the proposed model are confirmed. This validated model not only enhances our understanding of zinc-ion battery behavior but also propels advancements in utilizing this technology across various energy storage applications.

Abstract:Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), as powerful technique of describing electrochemical processes inside lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), has been widely studied for many applications, such as state-of-health (SOH) estimation and degradation diagnostic. To achieve the quantitative analysis on internal processes of LiBs in the electric vehicle (EV) application, a series electrochemical impedance model is developed in this paper. Two novel simplifications on the lithium ion transport path and the electrolyte diffusion make the impedance model have high computational efficiency and more likely to achieve on-board applications. The proposed model has been verified by comparing with measured EISs of three types of LiBs under different state-of-charge (SOC), which proves that it has high simulation accuracy and adaptability. Besides, we analyze the relationship between model parameters and the impedance and extracts some change rules of parameters, all these rules could provide theoretical guidance for the parameter identification of LiBs.

Abstract:In this article, we derive and discuss a physics-based model for impedance spectroscopy of lithium batteries. Our model for electrochemical cells with planar electrodes takes into account the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) as a porous surface film. We present two improvements over standard impedance models. First, our model is based on a consistent description of lithium transport through electrolyte and the SEI. We use well-defined transport parameters, e.g., transference numbers, and consider convection of the center-of-mass. Second, we solve our model equations analytically and state the full transport parameter dependence of the impedance signals. Our consistent model results in an analytic expression for the cell impedance including bulk and surface processes. The impedance signals due to concentration polarizations highlight the importance of electrolyte convection in concentrated electrolytes. We simplify our expression for the complex impedance and compare it to common equivalent circuit models. Such simplified models are good approximations in concise parameter ranges. Finally, we compare our model with experiments of lithium metal electrodes and find large transference numbers for lithium ions. This analysis reveals that lithium-ion transport through the SEI has solid-electrolyte character.

Abstract:The electrochemical model of the battery has gained widespread recognition due to its clear physical interpretability. However, achieving an accurate electrochemical model heavily relies on precise parameter settings. To address this challenge, various model-based parameter optimization methods have been developed. Currently, most research relies on model reduction techniques and heuristic random search methods for parameter identification. These approaches often lead to time-consuming processes and a loss of physical interpretability in the electrochemical model. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel technical framework that directly parametrizes the electrochemical model. First, we establish a battery electrochemical model that accounts for lithium plating and SEI film thickening, serving as the main focus of this study. Secondly, in order to expedite parameter identification without compromising the model's physical interpretability, we innovate by performing comprehensive sensitivity analysis using voltage and impedance characteristics. This allows us to identify the most influential parameters, which become the key for subsequent research. Finally, to ensure reasonable initialization of finite element computations and to avoid convergence issues in the identification algorithm, we combine machine learning and optimization algorithms into a two-step parameter identification method. By utilizing the proposed method to identify the model parameters, the simulations exhibit high accuracy.

Abstract:Accurate models of lithium-ion batteries are important for analyzing and predicting battery dynamics and aging. This paper presents an electrochemistry-based impedance model for lithium-ion batteries to better understand the relationship between battery internal dynamics and external measurement. The proposed impedance model is a modified single particle model which balances between simplicity and accuracy. The model includes electrochemical impedance due to charge-transfer reaction, diffusion dynamics in the electrodes, effects of ion concentration, capacitance dispersion in the double layer, and anode insulating film growth, etc. The impedance tests for model validation were performed on two lithium-ion cells at ambient temperature and at different SOC levels. A particle swarm optimization method is employed to identify model parameters. The model accuracy under different conditions is compared with that of conventional Randles model and the parameter variations at different stage of the aging process are studied.

Abstract:A common way to model lithium-ion batteries is to apply equivalent circuit (EC) models. In this work two different EC models are build up and parameterized for a commercial 6.5 Ah high-power lithium-ion cell. Measured impedance spectroscopy data depending on temperature and state of charge (SOC) are used for parameter estimation.The first EC model consists of an ohmic resistor (R), an inductor (L) and three RC-elements (a parallel connection of a capacitor (C) and a resistor). The second EC model consists of one R, one L, two Zarc elements and a Warburg element. The estimated parameters were used to develop two empirical electrical cell models which are able to predict the voltage of the cells depending on current, temperature and SOC. Hereby the internal cell resistance Ri is based on the EC models and a Butler–Volmer adjustment. Both approaches were validated by current profiles, which cover typical automotive applications to prove the model performance at low temperatures and high dynamic operation. An accurate voltage prediction could be realized with both EC models. The second, more complex, model is able to predict cell voltage more precisely, but at the expense of up to four times higher computational effort.

Abstract:Although electrochemical models have superior capabilities of internal states estimation to equivalent-circuit models, they have larger numbers of parameter values to be determined while predicting the behaviors of a real cell. Parameter identification of electrochemical models is essential but present methods are time-consuming and complex. In the "Part1" paper in this series, a lumped-parameter electrochemical model was built with the redundant/unobservable parameters removed. Using the this model, this paper proposes a novel stepwise method that can identify the whole set of parameter values for a physical cell using simple tests. The lumped-parameter model is specifically reformulated mostly based on frequency decomposition, and a reference electrode is included in the model to achieve electrode decoupling. The method is decomposed into four tests and eight steps, where the number of parameters to be identified in each step is significantly reduced, enhancing the computational efficiency and improving the identification accuracy. The identified values are first directly compared to the true values, and then the time-domain predictions of the lumped-parameter model using the identified values are compared to those of the full-order model using the true parameter values in terms of the terminal voltage and electrochemical states under different operation conditions.

Abstract:This paper implements a highly efficient algorithm to extract electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) from physics-based battery models (e.g., a P2D model). The mathematical approach is different from how EIS is practiced experimentally. Experimentally, the voltage (current) is harmonically perturbed over a wide range of frequencies and the amplitude and phase shift of the corresponding current (voltage) is measured. The experimental approach can be implemented in simulation software, but is computationally expensive. The approach here is to determine locally linear state-space models from the full physical model. The four Jacobian matrices that are the basis of the state-space models can be derived by numerical differentiation of the physical model. The EIS is then extracted from the state-space model using computationally efficient matrix-manipulation techniques. The algorithm can evaluate the full EIS at an instant in time during a transient, independent of whether the battery is in a stationary state. The approach is also able to separate the full-cell impedance to evaluate partial EIS, such as for a battery anode alone. Although such partial EIS is difficult to measure experimentally, the partial EIS provides valuable insights in interpreting the full-cell EIS.

Parameter Identification and Sensitivity Analysis for Zero-dimensional Physics-based Lithium-Sulfur Battery Models

Abstract:This paper examines the problem of estimating the parameters of a Lithium-Sulfur (LiS) battery from experimental cycling data. LiS batteries are attractive compared to traditional Lithium-Ion batteries, thanks largely to their potential to provide higher energy densities. The literature presents a number of different LiS battery models, with different fidelities and complexities. This includes both higher-fidelity diffusion-reaction models as well as "zero-dimensional" models that neglect diffusion dynamics while capturing the physics of the underlying reduction-oxidation reactions. The paper focuses on zero-dimensional LiS battery models, and develops four such models from the literature, reflecting different choices of which redox reactions to model. There is a growing need for using experimental cycling datasets to both parameterize these models and compare their fidelities. To address this need, we fabricated LiS coin cells and performed charge/discharge cycling tests on these cells. In parallel, we analyzed the sensitivity of simulated LiS battery charge/discharge characteristics to underlying model parameters. Using this sensitivity analysis, we selected a subset of model parameters for identification, and estimated these parameters for all four LiS battery models from cycling data, thereby arriving at a consistent experimental comparison and assessment of these models' respective fidelities.

Abstract:The traditional time-domain equivalent circuit model (ECM) for Li-ion batteries may achieve high accuracy by identifying model parameters through limited dynamic conditions. However, the traditional ECM (TECM) parameter matching techniques based on time-domain may have the problem of adaptability of working conditions. To solve the problem of dependence on time-domain working conditions and improve the stability of the full-cycle modeling of lithium batteries, it is critical to establish the ECM based on the principle of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). However, the full-frequency domain ECM structures (FECM) and the corresponding parameters based on the whole frequency ranges of the EIS employ too many resources for on-line estimation. In this paper, we firstly analyze the frequency region of the standard operating conditions of electric vehicles and theoretically discuss the rationality of the Simplified ECM base on the low-frequency region of the EIS. The proposed low-frequency domain ECM (LECM) simplifies the elements that describe the medium-high frequency regions of the EIS. It only uses the low-frequency region of the EIS to identify the model parameters. The results show that the accuracy of the proposed LECM is almost the same as that of FECM, and saves an average of 40% of the calculation load.

Abstract:<p>Based on the electrochemical-thermal coupling model of lithium-ion battery, the electrochemical behavior and parameter sensitivity identification of the numerical model are profoundly studied. Also, the internal physico-chimica evolution and design optimization under different working conditions are analyzed. On this basis, summarized is the sensitivity of 23 parameters such as electrode structure parameters, material property parameters and kinetics parameters of the power lithium-ion battery, and the battery design is therefore optimized. The research shows that if the battery voltage is used as the basis for measuring the degree of dispersion of the model output when the parameters are changed, the parameter identification work can be more accurate. The 23 parameters selected in this paper are identified, and the high, medium, low and non-sensitive parameters are respectively 7, 8, 4, 4; changes in design parameters will cause changes in the state of charge, which in turn affect the model output.</p>

Nonlinear electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for lithium-ion battery model parameterization

Abstract:In this work we analyse the local nonlinear electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (NLEIS) response of a lithium-ion battery and estimate model parameters from measured NLEIS data. The analysis assumes a single-particle model including nonlinear diffusion of lithium within the electrode particles and asymmetric charge transfer kinetics at their surface. Based on this model and assuming a moderately-small excitation amplitude, we systematically derive analytical formulae for the impedances up to the second harmonic response, allowing the meaningful interpretation of each contribution in terms of physical processes and nonlinearities in the model. The implications of this for parameterization are explored, including structural identifiability analysis and parameter estimation using maximum likelihood, with both synthetic and experimentally measured impedance data. Accurate fits to impedance data are possible, however inconsistencies in the fitted diffusion timescales suggest that a nonlinear diffusion model may not be appropriate for the cells considered. Model validation is also demonstrated by predicting time-domain voltage response using the parameterized model and this is shown to have excellent agreement with measured voltage time-series data (11.1 mV RMSE).

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries commonly used in electric vehicles are an indispensable part of the development process of decarbonization, electrification, and intelligence in transportation. From intelligent designing, manufacturing to controlling, an intelligent battery management system plays a crucial role in the long life, high efficiency, and safe operation of lithium-ion batteries. As a first-principle model, the electrochemical parameters of the electrochemical model have physical meanings and reflect the internal state of the lithium-ion batteries. The application of electrochemical models in an advanced intelligent battery management system is a future trend that promises to mitigate battery life degradation and prevent safety incidents. The reduced-order electrochemical model is expected to alleviate the requirements of advanced battery management systems for high accuracy and fast computing of lithium-ion battery models. However, the existing model order reduction methods have the drawbacks of high computational complexity and small application scope, so that inconvenient to apply onboard. In order to solve the existing obstacles, this paper applies the pseudo-spectral method to solve the solid-phase diffusion equation, while the liquid-phase concentration equation is simplified by the Galerkin method. Subsequently, a particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to identify 11 parameters of the electrochemical model. To further improve the accuracy of the electrochemical model, the above system identification method is applied to segment identification, especially for high or low state-of-charge (SoC) conditions in this study. Finally, based upon the derived model, estimation of SoC is performed using a particle filter. The results show that the proposed reduced-order electrochemical model achieves a low Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 8.4 mV and a MAE of 0.54 % on estimation of SoC based on the envisaged particle filter. This work is expected to provide the basis for the subsequent development of lithium-ion battery electrochemical models with smaller identification parameters and faster identification processes.

Abstract:To mitigate the intricacies and theoretical vagueness involved in constructing an electrochemical model for lithium-sulfur batteries, as well as the arduousness of parameter identification, which inadequately reflects the battery's dynamic characteristics, this study developed an equivalent circuit model comprising a first-order and a second-order RC circuit based on the impedance spectrum features of lithium-sulfur batteries at different charge levels. Additionally, we established an experimental setup for gathering data for lithium-sulfur battery parameter identification and verified the efficacy and precision of both models and real-time identification methods through simulation and experimental findings. Results evinced that both equivalent circuit models performed proficiently with respect to constant current discharge of lithium-sulfur batteries, with the second-order RC model error amounting to 1% or lower.

Abstract:The electrochemical model is widely studied because of its capability to accurately describe various reactions inside the lithium-ion battery. In this paper, the impedance from 10 mHz to 1 kHz of the Pseudo 2-Dimensional (P2D) model is analyzed, and it is found that the impedance characteristics of the P2D model only at low frequencies (below 0.5 Hz) are consistent with those of actual batteries. In order to improve the applicability of the electrochemical model, a model with good simulation accuracy under the excitation of 10 mHz to 1 kHz is established, by combining the P2D model with the theory of the double layer (DL) and the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). In the frequency domain, the new model is decoupled, the separate impedance characteristic of each component described by the model is analyzed, and the contribution of each component to the total impedance characteristics at each frequency band is analyzed and described in detail. Meanwhile, the impedance of the new model under the excitation of 10 mHz to 1 kHz is compared with the EIS data of the actual lithium-ion batteries to verify the simulation accuracy of the impedance of the new model under all frequencies. In the time domain, the responses of the new model and the P2D model at different conditions are compared with measured datas, and the results shows that the new model is superior to the P2D model under high-frequency excitation and has good simulation accuracy over a wide frequency range (10 mHz–1 kHz).

Abstract:Reliable battery model and identified model parameter are the preconditions for Power battery state estimation with high precision. Aiming at the disadvantage of existing integer order impedance modeling in characterizing the dynamic characteristics of Lithium-ion ferrous phosphate (LFP) batteries, a simplified fractional order (FO) impedance model including constant phase element and Warburg element is proposed based on the analysis of simplified electrochemical impedance spectroscopy curve. With the Grunwald–Letnikov definition based factional order numerical calculation, the FO Kalman filter (FO-KF) method based on the derived model is designed to identify the FO impedance model parameter and terminal voltage. The proposed FO impedance model can better represent the nonlinear dynamic performances of LFP batteries, and the Grunwald–Letnikov definition based FO-KF algorithm can maintain good accuracy in the numerical calculation of FO parameter identification. The experimental validation results show that the combination of simplified FO impedance model and FO-KF method can improve the modeling precision and parameter identification performance compared with the common integer order impedance model under two different test conditions.

Abstract:The physics-based fractional-order model (FOM) for lithium-ion batteries has shown good application prospects due to its mechanisms and simplicity. To adapt the model to higher-level applications, this paper proposes an improved FOM considering electrolyte-phase diffusion (FOMe) and then proposes a complete method for parameter identification based on three characteristic SOC intervals: the positive solid phase, negative solid phase, and electrolyte phase. The method mainly determines the above three characteristic intervals and identifies four thermodynamic parameters and five dynamic parameters. Furthermore, the paper describes a framework, which first verifies the model and parameter identification method separately based on pseudo two-dimensional model simulations, and secondly verifies FOMe and its parameters as a whole based on the experiments. The results, which are based on simulations and actual Li0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 lithium-ion batteries under multiple typical operating profiles and comparisons with other parameter identification methods, show that the proposed model and parameter identification method is highly accurate and efficient.

Abstract:Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a non-invasive, information-rich measurement method. The biggest advantage is that it is possible to identify and analyze the battery state using a suitable equivalent circuit model (ECM) without the need for complete knowledge of the battery's past operation. Conventional equivalent circuit models (CECMs) achieve a high degree of accuracy by identifying model parameters with relatively fixed circuit components. However, CECM method fitting process may suffer from fitting failure and fitting error, resulting in poor estimation accuracy. To solve this problem, it is crucial to establish a suitable ECM with good fitting effect and high accuracy. Accordingly, this study proposes a method of mid-frequency and low-frequency domain ECM (MLECM) based on fusion SEI film resistance and charge transfer resistance. Firstly, two model building methods are presented. Then, by fitting and analyzing the model parameters of two different types of batteries, we conclude that MLECM has the advantages of fewer parameters and better parameter fitting. Finally, a method of power battery state of health (SOH) estimation based on the improved model is proposed by MLECM and the mathematical model of SOH. Validated by two datasets of experiments with different types of batteries, the results show that the maximum RMSE of the proposed estimation method is only 1.38% in the two datasets. And the average root mean squared error (RMSE) of MLECM is reduced by 0.708% compared to CECM, while the computational load of the former is reduced by 69.57% compared to the latter. Compared with the CECM method, the MLECM has high estimation accuracy, high applicability and low computational load.

Abstract:The most commonly used type of lithium-ion battery model in current battery management systems is the equivalent circuit model (ECM), but ECMs can predict only the input/output dynamics of cells but not internal electrochemical states. Since knowledge of these internal electrochemical states is needed to devise controls that can directly mitigate premature aging, researchers increasingly demand advanced control-oriented electrochemical models. Historically, electrochemical models have been computationally complex; in order to reduce this computational complexity many efforts have been made to simplify the original electrochemical model. However, in order to facilitate the application of the electrochemical model, there are still two issues to address: (1) electrochemical parameter identification and (2) taking into account the electric double layer and constant-phase-element (CPE) dynamics. In this paper, we first reformulate the original electrochemical model using lumped parameters to produce a full-order model (FOM) with the number of parameters reduced from 36 down to 24. All redundant/unobservable parameters are eliminated, and thus a minimum set of parameters are obtained, making system identification possible. Then, a series of lumped-parameter transfer functions are derived using only the required assumption of linearity. CPEs are added to the transfer functions to capture more accurately dynamic behavior of real cells. The derived lumped-parameter transfer functions are used to generate a lumped-parameter discrete-time state-space model. Time-domain data are generated by a virtual battery cell created via COMSOL using the FOM as a benchmark for comparison. Testing results under different conditions shows an overall improvement in estimation of cell voltage and state variables for a cell having realistic double-layer capacitance by using the lumped-parameter reduced-order model with CPE.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries stand out from other clean energy sources because of their high energy density and small size. With the increasing application scope and scale of lithium-ion batteries, real-time and accurate monitoring of its state of health plays an important role in ensuring the healthy and stable operation of an energy storage system. Due to the interaction of various aging reactions in the aging process of lithium-ion batteries, the capacity attenuation shows no regularity. However, the traditional monitoring method is mainly based on voltage and current, which cannot reflect the internal mechanism, so the accuracy is greatly reduced. Recently, with the development of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, it has been possible to estimate the state of health quickly and accurately online. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy can measure battery impedance in a wide frequency range, so it can reflect the internal aging state of lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, the latest impedance spectroscopy measurement technology and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy based on lithium-ion battery health state estimation technology are summarized, along with the advantages and disadvantages of the summary and prospects. This fills the gap in this aspect and is conducive to the further development of this technology.
