Abstract:The textile manufacturing sector always addresses the challenge of discharging an adequate amount of chemicals into the aquatic environment during the dyeing process. Eliminating these toxins from the aquatic environment is not very effective using traditional water treatment methods. In the current study, the effective elimination of cationic dyes, namely Crystal violet (CV), Malachite Green (MG), Methylene Blue (MB), and Rhodamine B (RB) from neutral aqueous solution using non-stoichiometric pseudo protic ionic liquids (PPILs) consists of tri-octyl amine (TOA) and octanoic acid (OA) as an extraction media has been explored. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was employed as the experimental method, and all the experiments were performed at pH 7 ± 0.1 at 303 ± 1 K. The parameters influencing the extraction process were systematically optimized. The optimization process includes evaluating the impact of diluents, assessing the influence of extractant concentration, studying the effects of equilibration time, conducting an interference study, evaluating the efficacy of various stripping agents, and assessing stripping phase ratios. Furthermore, the dye was successfully back-extracted from the PPIL-rich phase using dilute citric acid as the stripping agent. The regenerated solvent was used for successive extraction cycles. From the pH study, conductivity study and titrimetric analysis, the extraction mechanism was found to be proton exchange. All the cationic dyes were extracted and stripped quantitatively (>99 %) from their respective solution. The promising results yielded coupled with the circular nature of the process, suggest its potential to open avenues for further exploration in real wastewater treatment scenarios.
