Abstract:Let u be a solution of a second order semilinear parabolic equation which satisfies either Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions. Let v be a stationary solution of this problem. Then by substituting $u = v + \varepsilon w$, and omitting terms of higher order in $\varepsilon $ than $O( \varepsilon )$, we may formally derive a linear problem. In this paper we discuss the asymptotic behavior of solutions u of the nonlinear problem in relation to such behavior of solutions w of the linear problem. We show that if, for some $\lambda _0 > 0$, $w = O( {e^{ - \lambda _0 t} } )$ as $t \to \infty $ (in the supremum norm), then $u - v = O( {e^{ - \lambda _0 t} } )$ as $t \to \infty $ for suitably restricted initial data, provided the nonlinear term in the original problem is sufficiently smooth in a neighborhood of v. An example is given which demonstrates that without this smoothness condition, the convergence of u towards v may take place at a slower rate than is the case for the linear problem.

Abstract:In this lecture I will try to present a certain view of the progress achieved in recent years on the subject of asymptotic behaviour of nonlinear parabolic equations. This is an enormously rich field since we can play with the domain, the initial data, the boundary data and the form of the equation. Therefore, a selection of the topics to treat is necessary. Our interest will be centered around the stabilization of solutions to an equilibrium state, with special emphasis on the calculation of the characteristic exponents, namely the decay rate and the expansion rate.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the weak solution to the Cauchy problem for the scalar viscous conservation law, with nonlinear Laplacian viscosity. Firstly, we obtain the existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions when the initial data $u_0\in C^1(\mathbb R^N)\cap W^{1,\infty}(\mathbb R^N)$. Secondly, when $u_0$ is periodic, we prove the time-decay rate of the periodic solution and its gradient. At last, we study the long-time behaviour of perturbed solution to the Cauchy problem, in which the initial data is a $N-$d periodic perturbation around a planar rarefaction wave and obtain the time-decay rate of the perturbed solution approaching approximate planar rarefaction wave. The proof is given by technical energy methods and iteration technique.

Viscosity Solutions for Doubly-Nonlinear Evolution Equations

Abstract:We extend the theory of viscosity solutions to treat scalar-valued doubly-nonlinear evolution equations. Such equations arise naturally in many mechanical models including a dry friction. After providing a suitable definition for discontinuous viscosity solutions in this setting, we show that Perron's construction is still available, i.e., we prove an existence result. Moreover, we will prove comparison principles and stability results for these problems. The theoretical considerations are accompanied by several examples, e.g., we prove the existence of a solution to a rate-independent level-set mean curvature flow. Finally, we discuss in detail a rate-independent ordinary differential equation stemming from a problem with non-convex energy. We show that the solution obtained by maximal minimizing movements and the solution obtained by the vanishing viscosity method coincide with the upper and lower Perron solutions and show the emergence of a rate-independent hysteresis loop.

Asymptotics for slowly converging evolution equations

Abstract:We investigate slowly converging solutions for non-linear evolution equations of elliptic or parabolic type. These equations arise from the study of isolated singularities in geometric variational problems. Slowly converging solutions have previously been constructed assuming the Adams-Simon positivity condition. In this study, we identify a necessary condition for slowly converging solutions to exist, which we refer to as the Adams-Simon non-negativity condition. Additionally, we characterize the rate and direction of convergence for these solutions. Our result partially confirms Thom's gradient conjecture in the context of infinite-dimensional problems.

Abstract:We study the existence of nontrivial solutions for a class of asymptotically periodic semilinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^N$. By combining variational methods and the concentration-compactness principle we obtain a nontrivial solution for asymptotically periodic problem and a ground state solution for the periodic problem. In the proofs we apply the Mountain Pass Theorem and its local version.

Abstract:In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the subelliptic p -Poisson equation as in Carnot-Carathéodory spaces. In particular, introducing a suitable notion of differentiability, extend the celebrated result of Bhattacharya et al. (Rend Sem Mat Univ Politec Torino Fascicolo Speciale 47:15–68, 1989) and we prove that limits of such solutions solve in the sense of viscosity a hybrid first and second order PDE involving the -Laplacian and the Eikonal equation.

Abstract:The aim of this note is to study the Cauchy problem for the 2D Euler equations under very low regularity assumptions on the initial datum. We prove propagation of regularity of logarithmic order in the class of weak solutions with $L^p$ initial vorticity, provided that $p\geq 4$. We also study the inviscid limit from the 2D Navier-Stokes equations for vorticity with logarithmic regularity in the Yudovich class, showing a rate of convergence of order $|\log\nu|^{-\alpha/2}$ with $\alpha>0$.

Pseudo-Gevrey Smoothing for the Passive Scalar Equations near Couette

Abstract:In this article, we study the regularity theory for two linear equations that are important in fluid dynamics: the passive scalar equation for (time-varying) shear flows close to Couette in $\mathbb T \times [-1,1]$ with vanishing diffusivity $\nu \to 0$ and the Poisson equation with right-hand side behaving in similar function spaces to such a passive scalar. The primary motivation for this work is to develop some of the main technical tools required for our treatment of the (nonlinear) 2D Navier-Stokes equations, carried out in our companion work. Both equations are studied with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions (the analogue of a Navier slip-type boundary condition) and the initial condition is taken to be compactly supported away from the walls. We develop smoothing estimates with the following three features: [1] Uniform-in-$\nu$ regularity is with respect to $\partial_x$ and a time-dependent adapted vector-field $\Gamma$ which approximately commutes with the passive scalar equation (as opposed to `flat' derivatives), and a scaled gradient $\sqrt{\nu} \nabla$; [2] $(\partial_x, \Gamma)$-regularity estimates are performed in Gevrey spaces with regularity that depends on the spatial coordinate, $y$ (what we refer to as `pseudo-Gevrey'); [3] The regularity of these pseudo-Gevrey spaces degenerates to finite regularity near the center of the channel and hence standard Gevrey product rules and other amenable properties do not hold. Nonlinear analysis in such a delicate functional setting is one of the key ingredients to our companion paper, \cite{BHIW24a}, which proves the full nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Couette flow with slip boundary conditions. The present article introduces new estimates for the associated linear problems in these degenerate pseudo-Gevrey spaces, which is of independent interest.

Abstract:We consider a pseudo-parabolic approximations to the Navier-Stokes equations. The pseudo-parabolic part increases not only regularity, but also provides better control of the approximate solutions. This enables us to construct a family of bounded approximate solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations and to prove existence of smooth solutions for any smooth rapidly decreasing initial data.

Abstract:We consider an abstract first order evolution equation in a Hilbert space in which the linear part is represented by a self-adjoint nonnegative operator A with discrete spectrum, and the nonlinear term has order greater than one at the origin. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions.We prove that two different regimes coexist. Close to the kernel of A the dynamic is governed by the nonlinear term, and solutions (when they decay to 0) decay as negative powers of t. Close to the range of A, the nonlinear term is negligible, and solutions behave as solutions of the linearized problem. This means that they decay exponentially to 0, with a rate and an asymptotic profile given by a simple mode, namely a one-frequency solution of the linearized equation.The abstract results apply to semilinear parabolic equations.

Abstract:Consider a solution to a second-order pseudo-parabolic equation with sufficiently smooth time-independent coefficients in a cylindrical domain. If it vanishes on the cylindrical surface for all times and if its restriction to a fixed instant belongs toC2+a, then its pointwise values decay exponentially as t→∞ while its Dirichlet norm grows expontially as t→−∞. Similar conclusion still hold for solutions to non-homogeneous equations under non-homogeneous boundary conditions provided the free term and the boundary data posses these asymptotic behaviors.

We consider a class of elliptic and parabolic problems featuring a specific nonlocal operator of fractional Laplacian type, where integration is taken on variable domains. Both elliptic and parabolic problems are proved to be uniquely solvable in the viscosity sense. Moreover, some spectral properties of the elliptic operator are investigated, proving existence and simplicity of the first eigenvalue. Eventually, parabolic solutions are proven to converge to the corresponding limiting elliptic solution in the long-time limit.

Abstract:Based on a multi-dimensional Riemann theta function, the Hirota bilinear method is extended to explicitly construct multi-periodic (quasi-periodic) wave solutions for the asymmetrical Nizhnik-Novikov-Veselov equation. Among these periodic waves, two-periodic waves are a direct generalization of well-known cnoidal waves; their surface pattern is two dimensional. The main physical result is the description of the behavior of nonlinear waves in shallow water. A limiting procedure is presented to analyze asymptotic properties of the two-periodic waves in details. Relations between the periodic wave solutions and the well-known soliton solutions are established. It is rigorously shown that the periodic wave solutions tend to the soliton solutions under a 'small amplitude' limit.

Abstract:In this paper we study a recently derived mathematical model for nonlinear propagation of waves in the atmosphere, for which we establish the local well-posedness in the setting of classical solutions. This is achieved by formulating the model as a quasilinear parabolic evolution problem in an appropriate functional analytic framework and by using abstract theory for such problems. Moreover, for $L_2$-initial data, we construct global weak solutions by employing a two-step approximation strategy based on a Galerkin scheme, where an equivalent formulation of the problem in terms of a new variable is used. Compared to the original model, the latter has the advantage that the $L_2$-norm is a Liapunov functional.
