Abstract:Recently, the well-known dependency pair (DP) framework was adapted to a dependency tuple framework in order to prove almost-sure innermost termination (iAST) of probabilistic term rewrite systems. While this approach was incomplete, in this paper, we improve it into a complete criterion for iAST by presenting a new, more elegant definition of DPs for probabilistic term rewriting. Based on this, we extend the probabilistic DP framework by new transformations. Our implementation in the tool AProVE shows that they increase its power considerably.

A Dependency Pair Framework for Relative Termination of Term Rewriting

Abstract:Dependency pairs are one of the most powerful techniques for proving termination of term rewrite systems (TRSs), and they are used in almost all tools for termination analysis of TRSs. Problem #106 of the RTA List of Open Problems asks for an adaption of dependency pairs for relative termination. Here, infinite rewrite sequences are allowed, but one wants to prove that a certain subset of the rewrite rules cannot be used infinitely often. Dependency pairs were recently adapted to annotated dependency pairs (ADPs) to prove almost-sure termination of probabilistic TRSs. In this paper, we develop a novel adaption of ADPs for relative termination. We implemented our new ADP framework in our tool AProVE and evaluate it in comparison to state-of-the-art tools for relative termination of TRSs.

Abstract:This paper considers the NP vs. DP debate from the perspective of dependency grammar (DG). The message is delivered that given DG assumptions about sentence structure, the traditional NP-analysis of nominal groups is preferable over the DP-analysis. The debate is also considered from the perspective of phrase structure grammar (PSG). While many of the issues discussed here do not directly support NP over DP given PSG assumptions, some do. More importantly, one has to accept the widespread presence of null determiner heads for the DP analysis to be plausible on PSG assumptions. The argument developed at length here is that the traditional NP-analysis of nominal groups is both more accurate and simpler than the DP-analysis, in part because it does not rely on the frequent occurrence of null determiners.

Abstract:The present paper explores the nexus of coordination and referential dependencies, focusing on sentences such as 'Max and Lucie talked about him', in which it is hardly possible for Max and him to be co-valued. Previous accounts claim that such referential dependencies are in fact possible on a collective reading. It will be demonstrated here, however, that informants consistently judge the co-valued reading in such cases to be either strongly marginal or unavailable, regardless of whether a collective or distributive reading obtains. It is claimed that the manner in which referential dependencies interact with coordinate structures can be addressed insightfully in terms of 'predicate-valent' structures (as opposed to 'predicate-argument structures'). A constraint in this regard will be proposed: the 'Conjunct Referential Dependency Constraint' (CRDC). The CRDC is couched in a Dependency Grammar (DG) approach to syntax.

Abstract:Dependency distance, measured by the linear distance between two syntactically related words in a sentence, is generally held as an important index of memory burden and an indicator of syntactic difficulty. Since this constraint of memory is common for all human beings, there may well be a universal preference for dependency distance minimization (DDM) for the sake of reducing memory burden. This human-driven language universal is supported by big data analyses of various corpora that consistently report shorter overall dependency distance in natural languages than in artificial random languages and long-tailed distributions featuring a majority of short dependencies and a minority of long ones. Human languages, as complex systems, seem to have evolved to come up with diverse syntactic patterns under the universal pressure for dependency distance minimization. However, there always exist a small number of long-distance dependencies in natural languages, which may reflect some other biological or functional constraints. Language system may adapt itself to these sporadic long-distance dependencies. It is these universal constraints that have shaped such a rich diversity of syntactic patterns in human languages.
Annotated Dependency Pairs for Full Almost-Sure Termination of Probabilistic Term Rewriting

Abstract:Dependency pairs (DPs) are one of the most powerful techniques for automated termination analysis of term rewrite systems. Recently, we adapted the DP framework to the probabilistic setting to prove almost-sure termination (AST) via annotated DPs (ADPs). However, this adaption only handled AST w.r.t. the innermost evaluation strategy. In this paper, we improve the ADP framework to prove AST for full rewriting. Moreover, we refine the framework for rewrite sequences that start with basic terms containing a single defined function symbol. We implemented and evaluated the new framework in our tool AProVE.

Coherence : A Dependency Grammar Analysis

Abstract:Bech’s seminal distinction between coherent and incoherent constructions in German does not allow for those structures that display the traits of both coherence and incoherence simultaneously, e.g. the third construction. Hence his original two-way distinction has given way to a three-way distinction. This paper proposes that a threeway division is indeed more accurate. The approach presented here distinguishes between coherent, incoherent, and pseudoincoherent constituents. Nine diagnostics are utilized to support this three-way division, i.e. extraposition, intraposition, bare infinitive fronting, infinitival fronting, scrambling, pied-piping, position of negation, scope of negation, and gapping. The analysis is couched in a dependency grammar framework and formalized in terms of the two features ±s (scrambling) and ±p (predicate). Three principles of word order are formulated in terms of these features: the Scrambling Principle, the Predicate Serialization Principle, and the Predicate Weight Principle. An introduction to dependency grammar is provided.

Abstract:We provide responses to the commentaries in this volume to evaluate, clarify and extend some of the arguments in Dependency distance: A new perspective on syntactic patterns in natural languages. Evidences show that DDM (dependency distance minimization) is an important linguistic universal, biologically or cognitively motivated, in shaping the language system. As a general tendency, DDM works quite well in theoretical argumentations as well as practical applications. However, this does not mean that DDM is the only linguistic universal that works: it is highly possible that other factors, which might be biologically, physically, socially or culturally motivated, work as well to jointly mold languages.
Major Constituents and Two Dependency Grammar Constraints on Sharing in Coordination

Abstract:The article examines the usage of the "major constituent" concept in theories of coordination. The literature on coordination references major constituents when predicting the material that may and may not be shared by the conjuncts of coordinate structures. Previous attempts at defining the concept are, however, vague and insufficient. Hence the article presents a new definition. This definition is based in a dependency grammar frame-work. In addition to this new definition, two constraints are proposed that help predict which material can be shared in coordination. The first constraint, called the Restriction on External Sharing (RES) predicts which material external to coordinate structures can be shared. The second constraint, called the Restriction on Internal Sharing (RIS), predicts which material internal to the initial conjunct can be shared. A central aspect of the approach is the distinction between conjunct-external and conjunct-internal sharing. Various data are examined that demonstrate the validity of this distinction.

Abstract:This paper explores commonalities and differences between \dachs, a variant of Dependency Grammar, and Lexical-Functional Grammar. \dachs\ is based on traditional linguistic insights, but on modern mathematical tools, aiming to integrate different knowledge systems (from syntax and semantics) via their coupling to an abstract syntactic primitive, the dependency relation. These knowledge systems correspond rather closely to projections in LFG. We will investigate commonalities arising from the usage of the projection approach in both theories, and point out differences due to the incompatible linguistic premises. The main difference to LFG lies in the motivation and status of the dimensions, and the information coded there. We will argue that LFG confounds different information in one projection, preventing it to achieve a good separation of alternatives and calling the motivation of the projection into question.

Abstract:In this paper we present a combination framework for polynomial complexity analysis of term rewrite systems. The framework covers both derivational and runtime complexity analysis. We present generalisations of powerful complexity techniques, notably a generalisation of complexity pairs and (weak) dependency pairs. Finally, we also present a novel technique, called dependency graph decomposition, that in the dependency pair setting greatly increases modularity. We employ the framework in the automated complexity tool TCT. TCT implements a majority of the techniques found in the literature, witnessing that our framework is general enough to capture a very brought setting.

Abstract:Abstract The paper presents a dependency grammar theory of non-gapping coordination. The approach draws a distinction etween standard cases of coordination - called String Coordination - and gapping. Only small conjuncts are acknowledged. The core of the approach is expressed in terms of three constraints - the Contiguity Requirement (CR), the Parallelism Requirement (PR), and the Restriction on Shared Constituents (RSC) - that restrict which strings may be coordinated and in terms of the material that conjuncts may share. The claims made are valid for both English and German.

Abstract:When predicate constituents appear in the midfield in German, they must follow their sister constituents. When a midfield cannot be clearly identified, however, as in many matrix V2 clauses, predicate constituents may precede (certain of) their nonpredicate sister constituents. The contrast in serialization possibilities is curious. This paper provides a dependency grammar analysis of the phenomenon. Presenting four principles of word order for German, the analysis concentrates on the dependency grammar understanding of WEIGHT and RISING and how predicate constituents behave with respect to these areas. The relative flatness of dependency structures provides an opportunity for a theory of weight that does not exist for the more layered structures of most constituency grammars. The term RISING refers to discontinuities. When a discontinuity is perceived, the assumption is that rising has occurred. The understanding of predicates builds on the CHAIN concept. The words corresponding to the predicate in the semantics of an utterance always qualify as a chain in the syntax of that utterance.

Abstract:Over twenty years ago, Abadi et al. established the Dependency Core Calculus (DCC) as a general purpose framework for analyzing dependency in typed programming languages. Since then, dependency analysis has shown many practical benefits to language design: its results can help users and compilers enforce security constraints, eliminate dead code, among other applications. In this work, we present a Dependent Dependency Calculus (DDC), which extends this general idea to the setting of a dependently-typed language. We use this calculus to track both run-time and compile-time irrelevance, enabling faster type-checking and program execution.

Abstract:Dependency is dynamic manifestation of valency, and dependency distance (DD) is closely related to syntactic structure. By introducing the concept degree in graph theory, we analyze the relationship between dynamic valency (DV) and DD based on the Chinese and English treebanks. Our findings are: (1) the mean dependency distance (MDD) of the Chinese treebank is greater than that of English, while the variance of DV of Chinese is lower than that of English; (2) some values of the variance of DV exist in Chinese but not in English; (3) at a specific sentence length, there is a linear relationship between MDD and the variance of DV in the syntactic structures in English and Chinese. These findings suggest: (1) Chinese may have some unique syntactic dependency structures that are not found in English; (2) high DV may contribute to high MDD, but this effect on MDD may not be stronger than some grammatical factors.

Abstract:Modeling dependencies among features is fundamental for many machine learning tasks. Although there are often multiple related instances that may be leveraged to inform conditional dependencies, typical approaches only model conditional dependencies over individual instances. In this work, we propose a novel framework, partially observed exchangeable modeling (POEx) that takes in a set of related partially observed instances and infers the conditional distribution for the unobserved dimensions over multiple elements. Our approach jointly models the intra-instance (among features in a point) and inter-instance (among multiple points in a set) dependencies in data. POEx is a general framework that encompasses many existing tasks such as point cloud expansion and few-shot generation, as well as new tasks like few-shot imputation. Despite its generality, extensive empirical evaluations show that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance across a range of applications.

Abstract:In the recent issue of PNAS, Futrell et al. claims that their study of 37 languages gives the first large scale cross-language evidence for Dependency Length Minimization, which is an overstatement that ignores similar previous researches. In addition,this study seems to pay no attention to factors like the uniformity of genres,which weakens the validity of the argument that DLM is universal. Another problem is that this study sets the baseline random language as projective, which fails to truly uncover the difference between natural language and random language, since projectivity is an important feature of many natural languages. Finally, the paper contends an "apparent relationship between head finality and dependency length" despite the lack of an explicit statistical comparison, which renders this conclusion rather hasty and improper.
The Dependency Status of Function Words: Auxiliaries.

Abstract:The Universal Stanford Dependencies (USD) subordinates function words to content words. Auxiliaries, adpositions and subordinators are positioned as dependents of full verbs and nouns, respectively. Such an approach to the syntax of natural languages is contrary to most work in theoretical syntax in the past 35 years, regardless of whether this work is constituencyor dependency-based. A substantial amount of evidence delivers a strong argument for the more conventional approach, which subordinates full verbs to auxiliaries and nouns to adpositions. This contribution demonstrates that the traditional approach to the dependency status of auxiliary verbs is motivated by many empirical considerations, and hence USD cannot be viewed as modeling the syntax of natural languages in a plausible way. 1 The dependency status of function words The Universal Stanford Dependencies (USD), as presented in de Marneffe et al. (2014), advocates a scheme for parsing natural languages that categorically subordinates function words to content words. Auxiliary verbs, adpositions (prepositions and postpositions), subordinators (subordinate conjunctions), etc. are subordinated to the content words with which they co-occur. Abstract:The present study quantitatively investigates the structural features of English written VP-ellipsis (VPE) and VP-substitution (VPS) under the theoretical framework of dependency grammar. Results show that: (a) Both VPE and VPS are human language mechanisms that follow the least effort principle; (b) Dependency distance of segmental and discontinuous linguistic units under the influence of VPE and VPS conform to the right-truncated Zipf-Alekseev distribution; (c) Dependency-based indices are effective in distinguishing similar structures of VPE and VPS, especially the Do-Support in ellipsis and Do + X in substitution. The study not only explores the regularity of partial segments of human language under the mechanisms of VPE and VPS, but also offers quantitative evidence for distinguishing confusing structures in VPE and VPS, which may aid in raising the retrieving precision of similar linguistic structures in corpora.

Abstract:The paper introduces a unit of syntax beyond the constituent called the chain. A number of mechanisms are shown to be sensitive to chains, e.g. the formation of predicates and idioms, the ellipses of gapping, pseudogapping and VP-ellipsis, and the elided material of stripping and answer fragments. The presentation is couched in a surface syntax, dependency-bascd framework, as opposed to a constituency-based one. While the chain call be defined ill a manner consistent with constituency, doing so requires that one adopt some controversial assumptions about the nature of constituency structure. The potential of the chain concept is great; it is the tool necessary to address the manner in which semantic compositionality occurs in the syntax.
