Abstract:Multiferroics are materials that simultaneously exhibit more than one ferroic order parameters, such as ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism. Recently, multiferroicity has received a significant revival of interest due to the colossal magnetoelectric coupling effect for the development of nano-ferronics. In this mini-review, we focus on a recent study of ferroelectricity, magnetism and magnetoelectric coupling within the newly discovered organic charge-transfer complexes. A systemic understanding of the origin of organic ferroelectricity and magnetism is provided. Furthermore, based on the recent mechanism of the magnetoelectric coupling effect: spin-ordering-induced electric polarization and ferroelectricity-induced spin alignment, we further present the recent progress in organic charge-transfer multiferroics and metal-organic framework multiferroics. The coexistence of polarization and magnetism at room temperature of organic charge-transfer complexes will be critical for the development of all-organic multiferroics.

Abstract:Abstract Organic martensitic compounds are an emerging type of smart material with intriguing physical properties including thermosalient effect, ferroelasticity, and shape memory effect. However, due to the high structural symmetry and limited design theories for these materials, the combination of ferroelectricity and martensitic transformation has rarely been found in organic systems. Here, based on the chemical design strategies for molecular ferroelectrics, we show a series of asymmetric 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide derivatives with the homochiral amine and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine- N -oxyl components, which adopt the low-symmetric polar structure and so allow ferroelectricity. Upon H/F substitution, the fluorinated compounds exhibit reversible ferroelectric and martensitic transitions at 399 K accompanied by a large thermal hysteresis of 132 K. This large thermal hysteresis with two competing (meta)-stable phases is further confirmed by density functional theory calculations. The rare combination of martensitic phase transition and ferroelectricity realizes the bistability with two different ferroelectric phases at room temperature. Our finding provides insight into the exploration of martensitic ferroelectric compounds with potential applications in switchable memory devices, soft robotics, and smart actuators.

Abstract:A new organic ferroelectric compound, 4-(cyanomethyl)anilinium perchlorate, proceeds a second-order phase transition from a paraelectric phase (P2(1)/m) to a ferroelectric phase (P2(1)) at 184 K. A perfect ferroelectric hysteresis loop was observed even at 10 KHz. It is the first example of a molecule-based organic ferroelectric whose polarization can be switched at such a high frequency. The temperature dependent second harmonic generation effect shows that the second-order nonlinear coefficient is nearly zero above T(c) and proportional to the spontaneous polarization below T(c), suggesting the occurrence of symmetry breaking, in good agreement with crystal structural determination. The origin of ferroelectricity was ascribed to the displacements of -NH(3)(+) cations and ClO(4)(-) anions from the symmetric positions including a small part of the order-disorder behaviors of the ClO(4)(-) anions.

Abstract:Molecular-based ferroelastics with dielectric switching properties are highly desirable for their applications on microelectronic dielectric switches, sensors, data storage, and so on. However, the current reports mostly focus on organic-inorganic hybrids containing toxic heavy metal atoms, and the relatively low phase transition temperature limits their application. In this paper, low-toxic organic salt ferroelastic enantiomers (R/S)-4-fluoro-1-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octonium chloride [(R/S)-F-321] were designed and synthesized under the introducing chirality strategy. They undergo a 432F422-type ferroelastic phase transition with a high Curie temperature (T c) of 470 K, simultaneously exhibiting excellent dielectric switching characteristics. In addition to the ordered-disordered movement of cations, the significant displacement of anions is also responsible for such high T c and large dielectric switching ratios, which is very rare in molecular-based switching materials. This work enriches the development of molecular ferroelastic switching materials and gives inspiration for the exploration of environmentally friendly high T c organic salt ferroelastics with prominent switching performances.

Abstract:The incommensurate (IC) behaviors of ferroelectrics have been widely investigated in inorganic oxides as an exciting branch for aperiodic materials, whereas it still remains a great challenge to achieve such intriguing effects in organic systems. Here, we present that successive ordering of dynamic dipoles in an organic molecular ferroelectric, N-isopropylbenzylaminium trichloroacetate (1), enables unusual incommensurately modulated structures between its paraelectric phase and ferroelectric phase. In particular, 1 exhibits three distinct IC states coupling with a long-range ordering modulation. That is, the incommensurately modulated lattice is ∼7 times as large as its periodic prototype, and the IC structure is well solved using a (3 + 1)D superspace group with the modulated wavevector q = (0, 0, 0.1589). To the best of our knowledge, 1 is the first organic ferroelectric showing such a long-range ordering IC structural modulation. In addition, structural analyses reveal that slowing down dynamic motions of anionic moieties accounts for its modulation behaviors, which also results in dramatic reorientation of dipolar moments and concrete ferroelectric polarization of 1 (∼0.65 μC/cm2). The combination of unique IC structural modulations and ferroelectricity makes 1 a potential candidate for the assembly of an artificially modulated lattice, which will allow for a deep understanding of the underlying chemistry and physics of aperiodic materials.

Abstract:Hybrid or organic plastic crystals have the potential as lead-free alternatives to conventional inorganic ferroelectrics. These materials are gaining attention for their multiaxial ferroelectricity, above-room-temperature Curie temperatures, and low-temperature synthesis. Here, we report a screening study of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) resulting in 55 new candidate plastic and plastic ionic ferroelectric molecular crystals, along with 16 previously reported ferroelectrics. With over 1.2 million entries in the CSD, the screening procedure involved many steps, including considerations of molecular geometry and size, space group, and hydrogen bonding pattern. The spontaneous polarization and electronic band gaps were predicted using density functional theory. 21 of the candidate ferroelectrics have a polarization greater than $10 \mathrm{{\mu}C/cm^2}$, out of which nine are reported at room temperature.

Abstract:A new piperidyl-based molecular ferroelectric piperidine-4-ylmethanaminium perchlorate (compound 1) has been successfully synthesized, which undergoes a reversible phase transition around T-c = 258.8 K. The spontaneous polarization of compound 1 is about 0.63 mu C/cm(2) and coercive field as small as 1.14 kV/cm at 192 K. The variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the space group transforms from a polar space group of P2(1) at 173 K to a centrosymmetric space group of P2(1)2(1)2(1) at 293 K. Especially, the dielectric anomaly at the phase transition temperature increases more than 4 times, which indicates potential applications in switchable dielectric devices.

Abstract:Hybrid ferroelastics have attracted increasing attentions for their potential applications as mechanical switches, among which the sporadically-documented anomalous ferroelastic phase transitions, i.e. , ferroelasticity appears in high-temperature phase rather than low-temperature phase, are of particular interests but have not been well understood at molecular level. By judiciously choosing a polar and flexible organic cation (Me 2 NH(CH 2 ) 2 Br + ) with cis -/ anti - conformations as A-site component, we obtained two new polar hybrid ferroelastics, A 2 [MBr 6 ] (M = Te for 1 , and Sn for 2 ), which undergo distinct thermal-induced ferroelastic phase transitions. The larger [TeBr 6 ] 2− anions well anchor the adjacent organic cations and essentially endow 1 with a conventional ferroelastic transition ( P 2 1 → Pm 2 1 n ) arising from a common order-disorder transition of organic cations without conformation changes. Whereas the smaller [SnBr 6 ] 2− anions could interact with the adjacent organic cations in energetically-similar sets of intermolecular interactions, enabling 2 to undergo an anomalous ferroelastic phase transition ( P 2 1 2 1 2 1 → P 2 1 ) arising from an unusual cis -/ anti -comformational reversal of organic cations. These two instances well demonstrate the crucial roles of the delicate balance of the intermolecular interactions for inducing the anomalous ferroelastic phase transitions, providing important clues for seeking new multifunctional ferroelastic materials.

Abstract:Molecular ferroelectrics are becoming an important area of research due to their ability to form a variety of structures exhibiting the desired properties. However, the precise control over the assembly of molecular building blocks for the design and synthesis of photoresponsive molecular ferroelectrics remains a considerable challenge. Here, we report a new hybrid high-temperature ferroelectric, (Me2NH2)[NaFe(CN)5(NO)], by judiciously assembling inorganic photochromic nitroprusside anion, as the framework building block, and polar organic cation Me2NH2+, as the dipole-moment carrier, into the crystal lattice. Ferroelectricity arises through the synergetic ordering of Me2NH2+ below 408 K. Piezoresponse force microscopy witnessed the presence of 180° ferroelectric domains and evidenced polarization switching by repeatedly applying an external electric field. Irradiation of the N-bound nitrosyl ligand (ground state) leads to two different conformations: isonitrosyl O-bound (metastable state I) and side-on nitrosyl conformation (metastable state II). Such photoisomerization realized in solid-state molecular ferroelectrics allows for the photoswitching between the ferroelectric ground state and the metastable state. Abstract:Ferroelectricity is essential to many forms of current technology, ranging from sensors and actuators to optical or memory devices. In this circumstance, organic ferroelectrics are of particular importance because of their potential application in tomorrow's organic devices and several pure organic ferroelectrics have been recently developed. However, some problems, such as current leakage and/or low working frequencies, make their application prospects especially for ferroelectric memory (FeRAM) not clear. Here, we describe the molecule-displacive ferroelectricity of supramolecular adducts of tartaric acid and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane N,N′-dioxide. The adducts show large spontaneous polarization, high rectangularity of the ferroelectric hysteresis loops even at high operation frequency (10 kHz) and high performance in polarization switching up to 1 × 106 times without showing fatigue. It opens great perspectives in terms of applications, especially in organic FeRAM.
Ferroelastic-switching-driven colossal shear strain and piezoelectricity in a hybrid ferroelectric

Abstract:Materials that can produce large controllable strains are widely used in shape memory devices, actuators and sensors. Great efforts have been made to improve the strain outputs of various material systems. Among them, ferroelastic transitions underpin giant reversible strains in electrically-driven ferro/piezoelectrics and thermally- or magneticallydriven shape memory alloys. However, large-strain ferroelastic switching in conventional ferroelectrics is very challenging while magnetic and thermal controls are not desirable for applications. Here, we demonstrate an unprecedentedly large shear strain up to 21.5 % in a hybrid ferroelectric, C6H5N(CH3)3CdCl3. The strain response is about two orders of magnitude higher than those of top-performing conventional ferroelectric polymers and oxides. It is achieved via inorganic bond switching and facilitated by the structural confinement of the large organic moieties, which prevents the undesired 180-degree polarization switching. Furthermore, Br substitution can effectively soften the bonds and result in giant shear piezoelectric coefficient (d35 ~ 4800 pm/V) in Br-rich end of the solid solution, C6H5N(CH3)3CdBr3xCl3(1-x). The superior electromechanical properties of the compounds promise their potential in lightweight and high energy density devices, and the strategy described here should inspire the development of next-generation piezoelectrics and electroactive materials based on hybrid ferroelectrics.

Abstract:The molecular crystal catena-(mu 2-nitrito-O,O)-bi-aqua-(18-crown-6)-barium nitrite (1) undergoes a reversible ferroelectric phase (FP) transition at T-c (= 182 K, phase transition temperature) from a paraelectric phase (PP). The symmetry breaking is changed from a high temperature centrosymmetric space group (Pnma) to a low temperature noncentrosymmetric space group (Pca2(1)) with an Aizu notation of mmmFmm2. Symmetry breaking analysis indicates that the FP space group is not a subgroup of the PP space group, suggesting it does not obey the Curie-symmetry principle. Some physical property anomalies near T-c, such as the temperature-dependences of C-p, dielectric constant, and second-harmonic generation effects, firmly confirm that this phase transition is reversible, and symmetry breaking really occurred during the temperature cooling down process from high- to low-temperature. Finally experimental fitting based on the Curie-Weiss constant and C-p gives a spontaneous polarization (P-s), reaching about 1.2 mu C cm(-2).
Successive Phase Transitions and Dual Dielectric Switching in an Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite

Abstract:Molecular phase transition compounds have become a hot research area in recent years because of their potential as functional materials, such as ferroelectrics, ferroelastics, dielectric switches, etc. However, materials combining switchable dielectric properties and ferroelasticity are still rare. Here, we reported an organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite, [CPtmp][Cd(SCN)3] (1) ([CPtmp]+ is a cyclopentyltrimethylphosphonium cation), with a potential ferroelastic property. This material undergoes three structural phase transitions at 247/226, 335/312, and 349/341 K (upon heating/cooling). The successive phase transitions are mainly caused by the stepwise ordering of [CPtmp]+ cations and the concomitant deformation of [Cd(SCN)3]− anionic chains revealed by structural analyses, which triggers the double-step dielectric switching in 1 as well.
