Abstract:The opening of the Disneyland in Hong Kong adds to the growing number of theme parks in the region and also fuelling competition in the tourism market in the region. To stem the decline in figures of tourists traveling to Singapore and reap the financial returns as hoped, Singapore has to implement necessary measures towards differentiating itself from other destinations, and to promote itself as the place to be at for tourists and locals alike. The whole package of branding efforts, establishment of image, marketing work and management of the resorts shall require much analysis into the fine details. Only with such detailed planning can Singapore's Integrated Resorts achieve its aim to be among the best tourist destination in world, and compete with countries in the region in tourism industry. This study aims to give a better understanding on how and what options can Singapore adopt to achieve that competitive edge over the rest and be successful in using that edge to its advantage.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to discuss the views and attitudes of stakeholders towards Singapore's two major integrated resorts which were launched in 2010. The topics of interest are the perceived success of the developments in boosting destination branding and further their role in the predicted long-term success of the tourism industry of Singapore. The two kinds of stakeholders considered include the community and members of the tourism sector. The empirical work conducted was achieved through questionnaire studies and focus groups. In considering the wider applicability of integrated resorts as one style of development in tropical destinations, it is of interest to access the views of a wide range of stakeholders. The challenges and possibilities of incorporating and considering community views in particular in Asian countries is not an established process and the paper will reveal the methods and insights achieved in the Singaporean context with a view to suggesting how other destinations might determine the perspectives of those who both live with and live from tourism initiatives.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this study is to trace the process by which Singapore considered and reached social consensus on the development of integrated resorts (IR), including casinos. Additionally, this study aims to derive policy implications as a systemic basis for future IR development in Japan. Design/Methodology/Approach – A meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the context and content of policy decisions in detail, focusing on the theoretical discussion of the characteristics of Singaporean IR, and the political and social decision-making process surrounding the introduction of the IR business. Findings – The Singaporean government demonstrated an inclusive policy decision-making process that convinced various stakeholders, especially civil society and the religious community, on the introduction of casinos. In addition, to minimize the social side effects of introducing casinos, the government actively provided safety measures, and pursued a strategy to lead investors to invest a large amount of money in Singapore’s tourism infrastructure along with license renewal negotiations. Research Implications – By analyzing the policy compliance process of citizens and the effective use of policy framing regarding politically and socially controversial IR business, this study helps to understand the policy decision-making process concerning IR. Furthermore, through the successful case of Singapore, this study can provide a framework that can be applied systematically for future IR business development in Japan.
Soft Infrastructure at Tourism Sites: Identifying Key Issues for Asian Tourism from Case Studies

Abstract:Building on the under-utilized power of case studies, this conceptual review considers information to enhance Asian tourism sites and attractions. Soft infrastructure, defined as the total effect of the hospitality, interpretive and person-to-person encounters, was considered at 16 strategically selected locations drawn from 7 Asian countries. An emic, tourist-oriented perspective was used to appraise the effects of the soft infrastructure. The researchers employed information from academic publications, attraction websites, tourists' reviews and personal visits to identify common cross-site issues. Seven key issues were identified: the importance of emotional labour/sincerity; the value of quality and professionalism; creating understanding and the role of language; the appeal of performance and spectacle; the usefulness of immersion and participation; the power of authentic local voices; and the management of crowding and close encounters. Site and tourist precinct attraction managers can evaluate these issues to better use their tourism assets and create enhanced on-site experiences.

Abstract:Purpose - This study aims to assess international customers' experiences in the leading hotels of the iconic city of Shanghai.Design/methodology/approach - Leximancer, a qualitative analysis software program, was used to examine over 2,000 reviews appraising Shanghai's superior hotels. The reviews were posted on Agoda.com.Findings - Overall, the international tourists were actually quite satisfied with the superior Shanghai hotels. This study highlighted the continuing importance of the attentive and professional "staff", physical attributes of the "hotel", comfort of the "room", "location", proximity to a "shopping" area and co-creation possibilities to deliver some "beautiful" experiences. Segments of the market based on tourists' origins, travel style and hotel management styles emphasized different expressive and instrumental features. Some strong commonalities were identified. The most satisfied customers, no matter what their backgrounds, were those who were more impressed with the expressive and intangible elements in the hotel, especially their interaction with and the service qualities of the hotels' professional and attentive staff.Originality/value - The work is framed within the wider theoretical concerns of extending the meaning of co-creation in the experience economy. The work argues that co-creation is not limited to the on-site experience but rather that post-visit appraisals through user-generated contents constitute an extended form of interaction which may assist in understanding the full trajectory of the hotel experience.

Abstract:Integrated Resorts in Singapore is one of the most popular and iconic destinations for Indonesia travellers and also takes a role as one of the key contributors to the tourism economy. But looking at the current financial report, both Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa have not gained a significant growth in their revenue yet where now it worsened by the pandemic situation. This paper is the first academic research of its kind based on the approach of in-depth interview with Indonesia high income travellers for providing the shifting approach to apply the Business of Integrated Experiences. There will be three innovation areas to focus on: Things to Maintain, Things to Leverage, and Things to Develop. The Business of Integrated Experiences approach is an innovative approach that focuses on creating a holistic experience for customers by integrating various elements of the resort. This approach aims to provide customers with a unique and memorable experience that will encourage them to return and recommend the resort to others. The research aims to explore how integrated resorts can apply this approach to enhance their offerings and attract more customers in a post-pandemic world.
Entertaining International Tourists: an Empirical Study of an Iconic Site in China

Abstract:Entertainment is a feature of some tourism settings and acts as a key pull factor for visiting certain destinations. Research-based studies about entertainment and the tourist experience are, however, rather limited. This study pursued this research opportunity and explored international tourists' experiences in an iconic performance-based entertainment, the Impression Sanjie Liu in southern China. More than 350 tourists' spontaneous reviews posted on TripAdvisor were analyzed through Leximancer software. It was found that international tourists were generally positive toward the culturally distinctive style of the entertainment. Despite the challenge of comprehending meanings and the language, they were impressed with the grand spectacle, the performances of many people, and the context. The disruptive behavior of other tourists, particularly the domestic Chinese tourists, troubled some international tourists. Implications for both academic research and the tourism entertainment industry are offered.
The Myth of the "Integrated Resort": Selective History, Retrospective Branding, and Fungible Assets

Abstract:: The expansion of the casino industry in Asia over the last two decades has purportedly given rise to a new development model known as the “Integrated Resort” (IR). Within state, professional and public discourses, the IR is often defined in three ways: 1. it evolved from large multi-attraction casino projects in Las Vegas; 2. it is distinguished by the fact that the casino occupies a small area of the property but makes a large contribution to its total revenue; and 3. the casino helps to make non-gaming attractions like museums financially viable. While not all factually inaccurate, I argue that these claims are strategic representations that legitimize and promote the IR in this part of the world. By triangulating different sets of discourses and participating in industry events like the Global Gaming Expo, I unravel the politics of these claims and trace their shifting effects as the IR is translated into various forms of regulatory controls and corporate practices. The emergence of the IR signals a historical moment in the normalization of commercial gambling in Asia, and shows how this transition can proceed through an architectural medium.

Abstract:The position of heritage hotels in place making narratives is not secure, given the challenges of new local developments and larger international forces. This research examines Singapore's iconic luxury heritage hotel, Raffles Singapore, against the relatively new hotels, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and Marina Bay Sands, to identify the nexus between the island city-state's historical and contemporary position in the changing hospitality landscape, specifically addressing the concept of place making as a dynamic narrative. Applying sentiment analysis, 454 hotel guest reviews on internationally recognized travel websites were examined. The findings suggest that the dominance of a luxury heritage hotel in the narratives of place making can shift over time, subject to postmodern architectural developments in the hotel landscape and competition from other luxury heritage hotels with iconic and location histories. A key contribution to the hospitality discipline is the measurement of a luxury heritage hotel's staying power through continuous place making amid glocal challenges. The significance of the findings should alert hospitality practitioners specializing in marketing to potential shifts arising from continuing new competitive narratives in place making.

Abstract:<span>Integrated casino resorts have presented themselves as key strategic gaming destinations in many countries. Several countries including Vietnam have developed integrated casino resorts to attract tourists and to stay competitive. To achieve sustainable success, residents' perceptions should be considered in strategic planning and execution of gaming destinations. This study explores residents' perceptions of integrated casino resorts and how these perceptions are extended for identifying conditions influencing residents' support in gaming destination development. A newly developed gaming destination, the Grand Ho Tram Resort and Casino in South Vietnam, was chosen as the research site. Semi-structured in-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted for data collection. NVivo was preliminarily used for thematic analysis and content analysis was further undertaken for analysing and interpreting the data. Favourable social and economic returns were found as necessary conditions to secure residents' support. Efforts in improving cultural and environmental well-being of residents should be promoted to elicit residents' support for sustained gaming destination development. Given residents' perceptive insights into impacts of significance to them, the findings will be beneficial for strategic planning and execution of gaming destinations and future tourism development.</span>

Abstract:A key challenge facing destination practitioners and policymakers is to sustain a competitive advantage and to ensure its destination’s success and prosperity under the impact of globalisation. Evidence suggests that the tourist experience can enhance tourists’ attachment and post-visit intention, which is an essential concept in travel and tourism study, as well as destination positioning. Still, there are limitations in the research concerning the relationship between these three factors. This study investigates the mediating effect of place attachment on the relationship between tourist experience and post-visit intention using Stimulus–Organism–Response (S-O-R) paradigm. The data were gathered from 213 respondents among the West Lake Heritage Site users in Hangzhou, China, using the self-administered questionnaires. According to statistical findings, tourist experience influences post-visit intention both directly and indirectly through the mediating role of place attachment. Drawing from these findings, practical information on design, marketing, and experiences for tourism destinations is offered.

Abstract:Entertainment tourism experience is an emerging but largely overlooked phenomenon. The current study, adopting a qualitative approach, explored travel motivation and entertainment tourism experience from tourists' and industry professionals' perspectives. A total of 33 tourists and 18 industry professionals in Macao were interviewed. Three layers of entertainment tourism experience were identified, namely, behavioural, functional and affective aspects of experience. Furthermore, the three layers of experience were reported to be interrelated and played different roles in creating tourists' entertainment experience. The study accordingly established an integrated flow of entertainment tourism experience. Moreover, the study offered practical implications to destination marketing organizations, industry practitioners, and tourists on cultivating a desired entertainment tourism experience for the tourists.

Abstract:Although many cities aspire to "global-city status," few have been as explicit as Singapore in its quest to create urban landscapes to project its global aspirations. This paper presents the case of the Singapore River development zone as a "hyper-symbol" of Singapore's global urbanism. By creating a world-class riverfront not unlike the acclaimed waterfronts of London, Sydney, or San Francisco, Singapore's urban planners hope to project the city as a venue worthy of world-class tourism and leisure activities, an important node in international circuits of capital, and a vibrant city for both foreign visitors and local residents. Our paper, however, also argues that local forces and influences play a significant role in the waterfront's development. The Singapore River landscape is the negotiated outcome of both globalism and localism—a dialectical landscape formed by dominant global influences on the one hand, and emerging local processes on the other. Fieldwork comprising a questionnaire survey, in-depth interviews, and on-site observations provide evidence of such global-local interactions. The paper contends that the challenges at the river are symptomatic of the broader Singapore experience as the city-state grapples with issues of national identity, local empowerment, and community rights in the midst of a global convergence of tourists, capital, people, and cultures.

Abstract:This paper presents a case of Singapore's latest theme park, the Universal Studios Singapore (USS). While theme parks are commonly perceived as money-making entities providing entertainment to the masses, the study argues that heritage is an equally important dimension of a commercial theme park's development, identity and profile. As a heritage-rich environment, the USS is a tourism landscape shaped simultaneously by the forces of corporate heritage and local cultural considerations. ‘Glocalization’ – the interaction of global and local forces – offers a conceptual insight into understanding how themed environments are created and marketed as tourism destinations welcoming to all and yet distinctive to its community and locality. Caution, however, is also sounded as to whether an international attraction can or should ever be ‘too local’ at the risk of diluting its global brand name and broad-based appeal.

Abstract:The casino-based integrated resort (IR), which started in Las Vegas in the United States, has moved to Asia and successfully opened Macau’s IR and Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands. As of 2019, three IRs, Inspire, Paradise City, and Midan City, are being constructed in Yeongjongdo Island and, among them, Paradise City is currently in operation after completing its first stage of development. Although the planned creation of three integrated resorts on Yeongjongdo Island was accompanied by the government’s policy support and legal support, the support of the local residents for the IR development projects can have a different effect from that of other areas. For the development of integrated resorts, not only the policy and legal support but also the local support is an important factor. So, this study was conducted focusing on which part of the integrated resort development project should be considered important to get sufficient local support. The results of this study showed that the resort operators and local residents have different opinions on the importance of local support factors. The so-called integrated resort experts considered the environmental and socio-cultural factors important, while the local residents considered factors such as the establishment and completion of the development plan as well as the sustainability as the most important factors. It is expected that this study will contribute to the formation of trust in the relevant policies by disclosing the contents of the implementation and system improvement of IR development projects and providing participation opportunities for residents in the process. This study will be also able to provide objective guidance in decision-making to policymakers who plan the development of such integrated resorts by identifying the factors important to elicit support from the local residents in advance, as well as to public or private developers who want to proceed with IR development projects.

Abstract:Abstract The paper compares the principal Asian city destinations of Hong Kong and Singapore with specific reference to heritage attractions and their contribution to tourism development, revealing contrasts and similarities that offer an insight into more general practices and processes. Authorities are actively pursuing tourism marketing and development initiatives incorporating the promotion of selected forms of heritage in order to stimulate visitor arrivals, but also employing heritage to define and articulate national and cultural identity. Heritage is thus shown to have a political and socio‐cultural significance in addition to its economic value as a generator of revenue, foreign exchange and employment. These functions help to explain the higher priority allocated to it in strategic planning and its increasing use to attract visitors throughout much of Asia. Contexts may be very different, yet approaches correspond, as demonstrated by the circumstances of Hong Kong and Singapore. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The influx of international tourists may affect the economic growth of destination countries by influencing the quality of life (QoL) of residents, the effects of which are unclear ex ante. Therefore, this study utilises the autoregressive distributed lag model to examine tourism‐induced growth by taking into consideration the residents' QoL using Singapore as a case study. We also consider the factor of heterogeneous tourism demand by regions of origin in a market‐based analysis using seemingly unrelated regression, motivated by the assumption that consumers from different markets differ widely over their preferences. This study seeks to contribute to an understanding of tourism as a source of sustainable economic development and as such provides important policy implications for practitioners and scholars alike.
