Abstract:A convenient and efficient synthesis of 2-substituted benzo[b]thiophenes is described. This one-step reaction of alkylthiobenzaldehyde and activated electrophiles proceeded smoothly in toluene at 120 degrees C with magnesium oxide as a catalyst. The target 2-substituted benzo[b]thiophenes are obtained in moderate yields and the side reaction is inhibited via azeotropic distillation. According to the experiments, a plausible mechanism is presented.

Abstract:Benzo[b]thiophene moieties are important skeletons which have been widely found in many natural products, pharmaceuticals, as well as functionalized materials. 2‐Alkynylthioanisoles, a class of bifunctional compounds bearing methylthio and alkynyl groups, are easily accessible from Pd‐catalyzed Sonogashira coupling between 2‐halothioanisoles and terminal alkynes, which have been widely employed as synthons in the construction of benzo[b]thiophenes through an electrophilic or a radical pathway. This review summarizes the related developments with a particular focus on the reaction mechanism. We hope it will help in future research in this area and believe that with the discovery of new catalytic systems, the industrial synthesis of benzo[b]thiophenes from 2‐alkynylthioanisoles will be achieved soon.

Abstract:A new strategy for the preparation of 3-halobenzo[b]thiophenes via a photo-driven halocyclization/demethylation of 2-alkynylthioanisoles with simple alkyl halides was developed. The reaction can proceed smoothly at room temperature under visible-light irradiation without any external photocatalyst, and the protocol has a range of advantages, including simplicity and mildness of the reaction conditions, good functional-group tolerance, and excellent yields of the products.

Abstract:Phenols are versatile synthetic intermediates and key structural motifs in many natural products and biologically active compounds. We herein report a visible-light-induced aerobic oxidative hydroxylation of arylboronic acids/pinacol esters using air as oxidant and without using any catalysts and base, etc., additives, providing a green entry to a variety of phenols in a highly efficient and concise fashion. This novel reaction is enabled by photoactivation of an electron donor-acceptor complex, in which THF serves as both the solvent and electron donor. DFT studies indicated that the oxidation process involves a concerted hydrogen abstraction transfer from THF and dehydroxylation of boronic acid undergoing spin crossover from triplet to singlet to produce an active peroxoboronic acid intermidiate. Salient merits of this chemistry include broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, gram-scale synthesis, and versatile late-stage functionalizations as well as the use of air, visible light, and catalyst- and additive-free conditions. This strategy introduces a novel photoreaction mode with the aid of a solvent, offering a succinct and environmentally sustainable route for synthesizing phenols. The strong practicability and highly efficient access to modifying complex biorelevant molecules bode well for the potential applications of this chemistry in pharmaceutical chemistry.

Abstract:Triflic anhydride and 2-chloropyridine-comediated tandem activation, intramolecular aromatic electrophilic addition, and 1,2-sulfonyl shift via spirocyclic intermediates of sulfonium α-acyl sulfonylmethylides realize the efficient synthesis of 2-alkyl/arylthiobenzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxides. The deactivated sulfonyl group determines the site-selectivity of the electrophilic addition via the ipso-attack, while the following S-migration controls the regioselectivity. Some of 2-methylthiobenzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxides show fluorescence properties in the solid state and in their solutions.
Unveiling the Multifaceted Nature of 4-(4-MethylphenylThio)benzophenone: A Combined DFT, NBO, and Spectroscopic Investigation of its Electronic Structure and Excited States

Abstract:Benzophenone and its derivatives play a crucial role as UV (ultra-violet) lters and UV-ink photoinitiators. The photoinitiating properties of benzophenones are primarily linked to the degree of -conjugation and the extent of delocalization within the molecule. Understanding the intricate interplay of conjugation, delocalization, and substituent effects allows for the precise customization of benzophenone derivatives to meet speci c application requirements. Quantum mechanical calculations, employing the B3LYP/6-311++G(d, p) density functional theory (DFT), are utilized to compute chemical reactivity, stability, and photoinitiating properties for 4-4 (methylphenylthio) benzophenone. Various parameters such as proton af nity, ionization energy, electron af nity, reactivity, and spectroscopic properties are determined. The DFT-computed infrared spectra align well with available experimental results. The UV/Visible spectra obtained using TD-DFT reveal absorption toward higher wavelengths, attributed to the extended delocalization of -electrons. In an aqueous medium, the absorption spectra of 4-4 (methylphenylthio) benzophenone exhibit a high- intensity peak with a longer wavelength shift in the visible region compared to gas-phase spectra. This knowledge provides the foundation for designing novel initiators with tailored light absorption, excited state lifetimes, and reaction selectivities. Consequently, these advancements open doors to bene ts in UV-curing, photopolymerization, and other light-driven processes.

Abstract:Vinylbenziodoxolones (VBXs) are important electrophilic alkene synthons. However, the synthesis of cis -thiophenol-VBX reagents from ethynylbenziodoxolones (EBXs) and thiophenols remains challenging. Abstract:(E)-2-[2-(4-bromothiophen-2-yl) vinyl] quinoline was prepared through an acid catalysed condensation of 2-methylquinoline and 4-bromothiophene-2-carbaldehyde. Subsequent palladium-catalysed cross-coupling with various arylboronic acids gave a series of novel fluorescent thiophene and quinoline derivatives. The structures of the products were characterised using IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and elemental analysis. The UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra of these derivatives were investigated.

Abstract:Abstract The Baeyer-Villiger reaction is used extensively in organic chemistry. Sila- and bora-variants have also been documented widely, with these processes underpinning, for example, the Fleming-Tamao oxidation and hydroborative alkene hydration, respectively. By contrast, the development of thia-Baeyer-Villiger reactions involving sulfoxides has long been considered unlikely because competitive oxidation to the sulfone occurs exclusively. Here, we disclose a photoinduced thia-Baeyer-Villiger-type oxidations; specifically, we find that exposure of dibenzothiophene (DBT) derivatives to an iron porphyrin catalyst under Ultraviolet irradiation in the presence of t -BuOOH generates sulfinic esters in up to 87% yield. The produced sulfinic esters are transformed to a variety of biphenyl substrates including biphenyl sulfoxides, sulfones and sulfonamides in 1-2 steps. These results provide a mild process for the selective functionalization of sulfur compounds, and offer a biomimetic approach to convert DBT into 2-hydroxybiphenyl under controllable stepwise pathway. Based upon experimental evidences and DFT calculation, a mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:4-Bromothiophene-2-carbaldehyde was reacted with benzyl cyanide to prepare (Z)-3-(4-bromothiophen-2-yl)-2-phenylacrylonitrile which was cross-coupled with various arylboronic acids under Pd(PPh(3))(4) catalysis to afford a series of novel fluorescent aryl-substituted thiophene derivatives. These compounds are one of the most promising functional organic light-emitting diode materials. The UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescent spectra of these compounds in CH(2)Cl(2) were investigated.

Abstract:1,4-Bis(tert-butylthio)-3,6-diphenyl- and 3,6-di(2-thienyl)thieno[3,4-c]thiophenes (2a,b)were synthesized from 2-(tert-butylthio)-3-phenyl- and 3-(2-thienyl)cyclopropenethiones (1a,b) and triphenylphosphine in dry benzene at 50 degrees C, although similar treatment of 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl, N,N-diethylamino, pyrrolidino, and diphenyl-substituted cyclopropenethiones (1c-h) did not result in the production of the corresponding thieno[3,4-c]thiophene derivatives. The possible reaction pathway for the formation of 2a,b is described. The protonation of 2a with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) gave 4-(tert-butylthio)-3,6-diphenylthieno[3,4-c]thiophene-1(3H)-thione (13a), the treatment of which with sodium hydride and then isopropyl iodide led to 4-(tert-butylthio)-3,6-diphenyl-1-(isopropylthio)thieno[3,4-c]thiophene (16) by the regeneration of the thieno[3,4-c]thiophene ring system, this making possible the synthesis of other alkylthio-substituted thieno[3,4-c]thiophene derivatives. The reactions of 2a,b with N-phenylmaleimide (NPM) gave predominantly the endo-cycloadducts (17a,b) at the 1- and 3-positions, and that of 2a with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) led to the benzo[c]thiophene derivative (19) by desulfurization.

Abstract:Photoredox catalysis has emerged as a powerful tool in organic synthesis, revolutionizing how chemists approach challenging bond-forming reactions. The importance of 1,3-benzothiazoles lies in their diverse roles in medicinal chemistry, materials science, and industrial applications, due to their stability, bioactivity, and versatility as building blocks. This review represents the most comprehensive work to date on photochemical methods for synthesizing 1,3-benzothiazoles, covering developments in this field from 2009 to 2024. It is organized by the types of starting compounds and discusses synthetic strategies for the target compounds alongside proposed reaction mechanisms. Notably, many established light-driven methods are photocatalyst-free and typically conducted under visible light (CFL, white, green, or blue LED) at room temperature. By exploring a range of synthetic methods, this review not only deepens our understanding of benzothiazole synthesis but also inspires possibilities for future advancements. We hope this review will motivate chemists to pursue new, environmentally friendly methods for synthesizing these and related biologically significant sulfur heterocycles.

Abstract:A concise and efficient photoinduced rearrangement of (E)-3-arylvinyl-4H-chromen-4-ones for the synthesis of benzoaryl-5-yl(2-hydroxyphenyl)methanones is described. Benzoaryl-5-yl-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methanones were obtained in 77-95% yields via the irradiation of (E)-3-arylvinyl-chromones in the 95% EtOH with a high-pressure mercury lamp at room temperature under Ar atmosphere. The reported method provides a novel procedure for the synthesis of α,α'-diaryl ketone derivatives without addition of any transition metals and oxidants or other additives. A plausible mechanism was proposed, and the rearrangement product was characterized by NMR, HRMS, and X-ray.

Abstract:A novel photochromic compound, 3,4-bis[2,5-dimethylthiophene-3-yl]-2,5-dihydrothiophene (BT), has been synthesized. The photochromic reactions of BT in a polar solvent (acetonitrile) and a non-polar solvent (cyclohexane) were investigated by means of steady state absorption spectra and time-resolved transient absorption spectra. The maximum absorption wavelengths of BT in acetonitrile and cyclohexane are at 232 and 233 nm, respectively, and the maximum absorption wavelengths of the photocyclization product (CBT) in acetonitrile and cyclohexane are 445 and 453 nm, respectively. Upon irradiation with ultraviolet light, BT is first excited to the excited singlet state, and then to the excited triplet state via inter-system crossing. Only the excited singlet state generates CBT. The excited triplet state, which has a maximum absorption wavelength at 390 nm, decays rapidly to the starting compound (BT) alone.
