Abstract:An internal reconstruction and an immanent critique of Bourdieu's generative structuralism is presented. Rather than starting with the concept of “habitus,” as is usually done, the article tries to systematically reconstruct Bourdieu's theory by an analysis of the relational logic that permeates his whole work Tracing the debt Bourdieu's approach owes to Bachelard's rationalism and Cassirer's relationalism, the article examines Bourdieu's epistemological writings of the 1960s and 70s. It tries to make the case that Bourdieu's sociological metascience represents a rationalist version of Bhaskar's critical realism, and enjoins Bourdieu to give heed to the realist turn in the philosophy of the natural and the social sciences. The article shows how Bourdieu's epistemological assumptions are reflected in his primary theoretical constructs of “habitus” and “field.” To concretize their discussion, it analyzes Bourdieu's reinterpretation of Weber in his theory of the field of religion and of the young Mannheim in his theory of the scientific field.

Abstract:This paper attempts to theorize Pierre Bourdieu's empirical studies on social reproduction and cultural domination,and intends to explore his habitus-mediated cultural theory as well as aesthetic perceptions.Bourdieu discloses the transposition and containment nature of any social reproduction among multiple structured fields,thinking that the social habitus,cultural values,aesthetic orientations representing the dominant interests inscribes the social subjects through symbolic violence(for instance,education),constructing the socialized subjectivity and thus justifying the stability and productability of the social inertia.

Abstract:This article explores both the contributions and the drawbacks of the work of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Habitus and symbolic violence, terms central to Bourdieu's thought, are explicated, as well as his critical assessments of methodological and epistemological problems in current social scientific research. In particular the drawbacks of public opinion polls and survey research, and the problematics of the social scientist as social subject, are treated. Bourdieu's metaphorical preferences are highlighted to indicate the assumptions he makes regarding social scientific practices and the hidden pitfalls of adapting his work wholesale to the field of communications. Finally, the social paradigm underpinning Bourdieu's work is compared with that underpinning a cultural studies approach to the study of communications.

Abstract:As a key concept of Bourdieu's constructivist and structural social theory,"Habitus" does not refere to "habitude" or "habit".It is a permanent system of dispositions of social actor,which is internalized and externalized,structuring and structured,as "generative principle" of social condition and "distinction principle" of social differentiation,that is,it functions historically and actually in multi-directions simultaneously,taking a form of double-structures,along with the actor's social action.Habitus,then,represents typically Bourdieu's creative contructivist structuralism and his critical attitude toward the traditional thinking model of"subject-object dualism" and "subject-centrism".

Abstract:Social Reproduction Theory (SRT) takes as its starting point the recognition that household activity in the capitalist mode of production constitutes far more than the production of use values. The activities that take place within households are understood to be part of the entire process of reproduction of society, i.e. social reproduction. The proponents of SRT have stimulated much valuable empirical research on these activities. However, there are major problems in the SRT framework within which these activities are placed. Although presented in the form of a contribution to Marxist theory, SRT contradicts the most basic precepts of this theory. SRT diverges fundamentally from Marxist theory in its use of the term “social reproduction,” and in the related distinctions between “reproductive” and “productive” labor, and between “paid” and “unpaid” labor.

Abstract:Pierre Bourdieu is known for his research in the areas of education and cultural stratification that led to a number of theoretical contributions informing the social sciences. Bourdieu’s interrelated concepts of field, capital, and habitus have become central in many approaches to inequality and stratification across the social sciences. In addition, we argue that Bourdieu’s ideas also feature in what is increasingly known as ‘digital sociology.’ To underscore this claim, we explore the ways in which Bourdieu’s ideas continue to have a major impact on social science research both on and with digital and Internet-based technologies. To do so, we offer a review of both Bourdieusian theorizing of the digital vis-à-vis both research on the social impacts of digital communication technologies and the application of digital technologies to social science research methods. We contend that three interconnected features of Bourdieu’s sociology have allowed his approach to flourish in the digital age: (1) his theories’ inseparability from the practice of empirical research; (2) his ontological stance combining realism and social constructionism; and (3) his familiarity with concepts developed in other disciplines and participation in interdisciplinary collaborative projects. We not only reason that these three factors go some way in accounting for Bourdieu’s influence in many sociological subfields, but we also suggest that they have been especially successful in positioning Bourdieusian sociology to take advantage of opportunities associated with digital communication technologies.

Abstract:This article builds the argument that Bourdieu’s dispositional theory of practice can help integrate the sociological tradition with three prominent strands of behavioral economics: bounded rationality, prospect theory, and time inconsistency. I make the case that the habitus provides an alternative framework to show how social and mental structure constitute one another, where cognitive tendencies toward irrationality can be either curtailed or amplified based on one’s position in the economic field and a person’s corresponding set of dispositions, ranging from more rational doxic dispositions to irrational allodoxic tendencies. Bridging economic sociology and behavioral economics, this work also bears on issues of persistent financial inequality reproduced through self-defeating patterns of economic behavior inculcated into individuals who occupy dominated positions in the social structure. Bourdieu’s thought, and in particular his conception of field+habitus, can usefully be applied to the empirical findings of behavioral economics to understand deviations from rational action as not only cognitive but also socially structured.

Abstract:Pierre Bourdieu discussed how an individual's taste relates o his or her social environment, and how the classification of \emph{distinct} and \emph{vulgar}, among others, arises from at the same time as shapes this taste in his work called \emph{La Distinction}. Robert Axelrod created a computational model with local convergence and global polarization properties to describe the dissemination of culture by simple selective interactions. In this letter, Axelrod model is modified, while holding to the same original principles, to describe Bourdieu theory. This allows to analyze how the dynamics of society's tastes and trends may vary with a simple approach, considering social structures and to understand which social forces are crucial to change dynamics. Despite the relative simplicity, the present approach clarifies symbolic power relations, a relevant issue for understanding power relation both on large as well as on small and localized scale, with impact on activities ranging from daily life matters to business, politics, and research. This model sheds light on social issues, showing that a small amount of conflict within a class plays a central role in the culture dynamics, being the major responsible for continuous changes in distinction paradigms.

Abstract:This paper presents a particular understanding of Bourdieu's social theory and the place of language within it, in response to Susen's depiction of these matters in his “Bourdieusian reflections on language: Unavoidable conditions of the real speech situation”. Bourdieu's understanding of language is argued to be overly derivative and too dependent upon conventional assumptions of late twentieth-century thought. Conversely, allegations of “determinism” in Bourdieu's social theory are rebutted as being too often glib and unquestioningly rooted in liberal assumptions about human “creativity”. It is argued that Bourdieu's social theory could in fact be construed of as not being determinist enough, an appraisal hardly ever entertained by social theorists today.

Pierre Bourdieu: Expanding the scope of nursing research and practice

Abstract:Bourdieu is an important thinker within the sociological tradition and has a philosophically sophisticated approach to theoretical knowledge and research practice. In this paper, we examine the implication of his work for nursing and the health sciences more broadly. We argue that his work is best described as a reflexive realist who provides a space for a nonpositivist approach to knowledge that does not fall into the trap of idealism or relativism. We emphasize that Bourdieu was not an abstract theorist, but only utilized theories to understand and explain the social world in all its empirical complexity. Theory is emphasized over method without denying the importance of method. We then provide a brief overview of some of his key concepts: habitus, field and capital. His work is a scientifically astute practice that has an emancipatory purpose, with particular resonance to the problems of nursing as a social practice. Some have criticized Bourdieu for undermining agency and we briefly address this issue, but argue that his conceptual framework helps us to understand what endures in social practice and why change is often problematic. In short, this paper argues that Bourdieu's work is a fruitful resource for critiquing existing nursing approaches that are preoccupied with agency over structure.

Abstract:The article explores social reproduction as a key term in expanding the purview of art history in relation to the social urgencies of the early twenty-first century and feminist struggles. Providing a context for the approaches to social reproduction and art in the specific journal issue, the analysis makes a case for a methodological shift that would see feminist art history coming closer to a history of labour. But this, the authors argue, implies interrogating what enters the category ‘labour’ as such. The article opens with an examination of capitalism in relation to crisis and goes on to look at a) social reproduction in an expanded (art) field; b) the violence of reproduction; c) the feminist commons/the social reproduction commons.

Abstract:In the tides of globalization today, state power and market join to impel commoditization. This rapid process of expansion has drastically enlarged the economic and political spheres, putting tremendous pressure on the social sphere, which has necessitated “protecting society” to be a core issue of contemporary sociology. However, with China being in a market transition as a unique background, the “redistribution system” in the past has profoundly inhibited the social life of self-organization, thus making “producing society,” rather than “protecting society,” the primary task. It is not only a mission of social practice, but also a mission of sociological cognition. Nonetheless, due to the unusual convergence of historical conditions, “producing society” exhibits duality: We have to produce in the same time and in the same space both “active society” in Polanyi's terms and “civil society” in Gramsi's terms. This particularity in “producing society” predetermines people's simultaneous making of “classes” and “citizens” on the level of social action. This paper aims at elaborating the dual mechanism of “producing society” and discussing the micro-base of “civil society.”
Schools as Drivers of Capitalist Accumulation Conditional Socialized Reproduction in Shenzhen

Abstract:Based on fieldwork in an urbanized village of Shenzhen, this paper analyzes the place of schools in the reproduction of Chinese state capitalism. It retraces the circuit of socialized capital that allows for the social reproduction of the native elite and the exclusion of many migrant workers in the context of Shenzhen's development as a special economic zone and its efforts to upgrade the economy. The native villagers, now forming an urban upper-class of rentiers, have capitalized on their overseas connections and capital accumulation to finance their school, allowing for their elite's upward social mobility after, but also already under Mao. After China's transition to capitalism, this school has served as an asset in generating value in the context of redevelopment and the real estate-driven upgrading of Shenzhen's economy. Property ownership is now a major criterion in points-based systems for accessing school places. I make two interrelated arguments. First, there is a closer relationship between the secondary circuit of socialized capital and the larger circuit of capital than what the literature on social reproduction implies. Second, the conditionality of quality education upon value generation amounts to separating the population deemed worthy of socialized reproduction and the surplus population that is left out. The paper connects diverse strands of social reproduction theory, Althusser's interpellation and ideological state apparatuses, feminist agentive social reproduction theories, and Bourdieu's capital conversion recuperated within a Marxian framework, to provide an integrated approach to social reproduction within capitalism.

Abstract:The philosophical platform of the modern French sociologist, philosopher, theoretician and anthropologist Pierre Bourdieu, represents a dominant conceptual means and analytical instrument used for researching artistic phenomena and the part they play in the society. Acting in the field of sociology, philosophy and sociology of culture, Bourdieu has redefined the perception of social reality, made an emphasis on the reconsideration of the foundation of objective scientific knowledge and has asserted the importance of researching practice in the socio-historical context. The starting point of Bourdieu's work is the problematization of his theoretical concepts of habitus, practice, capital and the fields used for enlightening of the practice and the influence of avant-garde and revolutionary Bauhaus school and movement. The aim and the focus of this work is to present new forms of the artistic-educational institution of Bauhaus as an active social participant, as well as its innovative and specific practice in constructing of the social environment. Using the analytical and historical methods and applying Pierre Bourdieu's theory in the transdisciplinary area and in the research of artistic phenomena, a change in social reality is shown through a change in the artistic and educational practices in the field.

Abstract:Socialization is a key mechanism of social reproduction. Yet, like the functionalists who introduced the concept, socialization has fallen out of favor, critiqued for ignoring power and agency, for its teleology and incoherence, and for its link to misguided “culture of poverty” arguments. In this review, we argue for renewed, post-functionalist use of socialization. We review the concept’s history, its high point under Parsons, the reasons for its demise, its continued use in some subfields (e.g., gender, race and ethnicity, education), and alternative concepts used to explain social reproduction. We then suggest that something is lost when “socialization” is avoided or isolated in particular subfields. Without socialization, conceptions of social reproduction face problems of history, transferability, and power. We close by outlining a post-functionalist agenda for socialization research, building off sociological work engaging cognitive science, linguistic anthropology, pragmatism, the re-interrogation of values, and the development of ideology in political socialization.
