Abstract:The Expressive Language ALCNHR+(D) provides conjunction, full negation, quantifiers, number restrictions, role hierarchies, transitively closed roles and concrete domains. In addition to the operators known from ALCNHR+, a restricted existential predicate restriction operator for concrete domains is supported. In order to capture the semantic of complicated knowledge reasoning model, the expressive language ALCNHR+K(D) is introduced. It cannot only be able to represent knowledge about concrete domain and constraints, but also rules in some sense of closed world semantic model hypothesis. The paper investigates an extension to description logic based knowledge reasoning by means o f decomposing and rewriting complicated hybrid concepts into partitions. We present an approach that automatically decomposes the whole knowledge base into description logic compatible and constraints solver. Our arguments are two-fold. First, complex description logics with powerful representation ability lack effectively reasoning ability and second, how to reason with the combination of inferences from distributed heterogeneous reasoner.

Abstract:Disjunctive Logic Programming (\DLP) is an advanced formalism for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR). \DLP is very expressive in a precise mathematical sense: it allows to express every property of finite structures that is decidable in the complexity class $\SigmaP{2}$ ($\NP^{\NP}$). Importantly, the \DLP encodings are often simple and natural. In this paper, we single out some limitations of \DLP for KRR, which cannot naturally express problems where the size of the disjunction is not known ``a priori'' (like N-Coloring), but it is part of the input. To overcome these limitations, we further enhance the knowledge modelling abilities of \DLP, by extending this language by {\em Parametric Connectives (OR and AND)}. These connectives allow us to represent compactly the disjunction/conjunction of a set of atoms having a given property. We formally define the semantics of the new language, named $DLP^{\bigvee,\bigwedge}$ and we show the usefulness of the new constructs on relevant knowledge-based problems. We address implementation issues and discuss related works.

Abstract:Practically all programming languages allow the programmer to split a program into several modules which brings along several advantages in software development. In this paper, we are interested in the area of answer-set programming where fully declarative and nonmonotonic languages are applied. In this context, obtaining a modular structure for programs is by no means straightforward since the output of an entire program cannot in general be composed from the output of its components. To better understand the effects of disjunctive information on modularity we restrict the scope of analysis to the case of disjunctive logic programs (DLPs) subject to stable-model semantics. We define the notion of a DLP-function, where a well-defined input/output interface is provided, and establish a novel module theorem which indicates the compositionality of stable-model semantics for DLP-functions. The module theorem extends the well-known splitting-set theorem and enables the decomposition of DLP-functions given their strongly connected components based on positive dependencies induced by rules. In this setting, it is also possible to split shared disjunctive rules among components using a generalized shifting technique. The concept of modular equivalence is introduced for the mutual comparison of DLP-functions using a generalization of a translation-based verification method.

Abstract:With the technology of the time, Kowalski's seminal 1974 paper {\em Predicate Logic as a Programming Language} was a breakthrough for the use of logic in computer science. It introduced two fundamental ideas: on the declarative side, the use of the Horn clause logic fragment of classical logic, which was soon extended with negation as failure, on the procedural side the procedural interpretation which made it possible to write algorithms in the formalism. Since then, strong progress was made both on the declarative understanding of the logic programming formalism and in automated reasoning technologies, particularly in SAT solving, Constraint Programming and Answer Set Programming. This has paved the way for the development of an extension of logic programming that embodies a more pure view of logic as a modelling language and its role for problem solving. In this paper, we present the \idp language and system. The language is essentially classical logic extended with one of logic programmings most important contributions to knowledge representation: the representation of complex definitions as rule sets under well-founded semantics. The system is a knowledge base system: a system in which complex declarative information is stored in a knowledge base which can be used to solve different computational problems by applying multiple forms of inference. In this view, theories are declarative modellings, bags of information, descriptions of possible states of affairs. They are neither procedures nor descriptions of computational problems. As such, the \idp language and system preserve the fundamental idea of a declarative reading of logic programs, while they break with the fundamental idea of the procedural interpretation of logic programs.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, the logic programming paradigm has been successfully expanded to support probabilistic modeling, inference and learning. The resulting paradigm of probabilistic logic programming (PLP) and its programming languages owes much of its success to a declarative semantics, the so-called distribution semantics. However, the distribution semantics is limited to discrete random variables only. While PLP has been extended in various ways for supporting hybrid, that is, mixed discrete and continuous random variables, we are still lacking a declarative semantics for hybrid PLP that not only generalizes the distribution semantics and the modeling language but also the standard inference algorithm that is based on knowledge compilation. We contribute the hybrid distribution semantics together with the hybrid PLP language DC-ProbLog and its inference engine infinitesimal algebraic likelihood weighting (IALW). These have the original distribution semantics, standard PLP languages such as ProbLog, and standard inference engines for PLP based on knowledge compilation as special cases. Thus, we generalize the state-of-the-art of PLP towards hybrid PLP in three different aspects: semantics, language and inference. Furthermore, IALW is the first inference algorithm for hybrid probabilistic programming based on knowledge compilation.
A Logic for Non-Monotone Inductive Definitions

Abstract:Well-known principles of induction include monotone induction and different sorts of non-monotone induction such as inflationary induction, induction over well-founded sets and iterated induction. In this work, we define a logic formalizing induction over well-founded sets and monotone and iterated induction. Just as the principle of positive induction has been formalized in FO(LFP), and the principle of inflationary induction has been formalized in FO(IFP), this paper formalizes the principle of iterated induction in a new logic for Non-Monotone Inductive Definitions (ID-logic). The semantics of the logic is strongly influenced by the well-founded semantics of logic programming. Our main result concerns the modularity properties of inductive definitions in ID-logic. Specifically, we formulate conditions under which a simultaneous definition $\D$ of several relations is logically equivalent to a conjunction of smaller definitions $\D_1 \land ... \land \D_n$ with disjoint sets of defined predicates. The difficulty of the result comes from the fact that predicates $P_i$ and $P_j$ defined in $\D_i$ and $\D_j$, respectively, may be mutually connected by simultaneous induction. Since logic programming and abductive logic programming under well-founded semantics are proper fragments of our logic, our modularity results are applicable there as well.

Abstract:Logic programming, as exemplified by datalog, defines the meaning of a program as its unique smallest model: the deductive closure of its inference rules. However, many problems call for an enumeration of models that vary along some set of choices while maintaining structural and logical constraints -- there is no single canonical model. The notion of stable models for logic programs with negation has successfully captured programmer intuition about the set of valid solutions for such problems, giving rise to a family of programming languages and associated solvers known as answer set programming. Unfortunately, the definition of a stable model is frustratingly indirect, especially in the presence of rules containing free variables. We propose a new formalism, finite-choice logic programming, that uses choice, not negation, to admit multiple solutions. Finite-choice logic programming contains all the expressive power of the stable model semantics, gives meaning to a new and useful class of programs, and enjoys a least-fixed-point interpretation over a novel domain. We present an algorithm for exploring the solution space and prove it correct with respect to our semantics. Our implementation, the Dusa logic programming language, has performance that compares favorably with state-of-the-art answer set solvers and exhibits more predictable scaling with problem size.

Abstract:Abstract Disjunctive logic programming (DLP) is a very expressive formalism. It allows for expressing every property of finite structures that is decidable in the complexity class Σ P 2 (=NP NP ). Despite this high expressiveness, there are some simple properties, often arising in real-world applications, which cannot be encoded in a simple and natural manner. Especially properties that require the use of arithmetic operators (like sum, times, or count) on a set or multiset of elements, which satisfy some conditions, cannot be naturally expressed in classic DLP. To overcome this deficiency, we extend DLP by aggregate functions in a conservative way. In particular, we avoid the introduction of constructs with disputed semantics, by requiring aggregates to be stratified. We formally define the semantics of the extended language (called ), and illustrate how it can be profitably used for representing knowledge. Furthermore, we analyze the computational complexity of , showing that the addition of aggregates does not bring a higher cost in that respect. Finally, we provide an implementation of in DLV—a state-of-the-art DLP system—and report on experiments which confirm the usefulness of the proposed extension also for the efficiency of computation.

Learning higher-order logic programs

Abstract:A key feature of inductive logic programming (ILP) is its ability to learn first-order programs, which are intrinsically more expressive than propositional programs. In this paper, we introduce techniques to learn higher-order programs. Specifically, we extend meta-interpretive learning (MIL) to support learning higher-order programs by allowing for \emph{higher-order definitions} to be used as background knowledge. Our theoretical results show that learning higher-order programs, rather than first-order programs, can reduce the textual complexity required to express programs which in turn reduces the size of the hypothesis space and sample complexity. We implement our idea in two new MIL systems: the Prolog system \namea{} and the ASP system \nameb{}. Both systems support learning higher-order programs and higher-order predicate invention, such as inventing functions for \tw{map/3} and conditions for \tw{filter/3}. We conduct experiments on four domains (robot strategies, chess playing, list transformations, and string decryption) that compare learning first-order and higher-order programs. Our experimental results support our theoretical claims and show that, compared to learning first-order programs, learning higher-order programs can significantly improve predictive accuracies and reduce learning times.

Disjunctive Policies for Database-Backed Programs

Abstract:When specifying security policies for databases, it is often natural to formulate disjunctive dependencies, where a piece of information may depend on at most one of two dependencies P1 or P2, but not both. A formal semantic model of such disjunctive dependencies, the Quantale of Information, was recently introduced by Hunt and Sands as a generalization of the Lattice of Information. In this paper, we seek to contribute to the understanding of disjunctive dependencies in database-backed programs and introduce a practical framework to statically enforce disjunctive security policies. To that end, we introduce the Determinacy Quantale, a new query-based structure which captures the ordering of disjunctive information in databases. This structure can be understood as a query-based counterpart to the Quantale of Information. Based on this structure, we design a sound enforcement mechanism to check disjunctive policies for database-backed programs. This mechanism is based on a type-based analysis for a simple imperative language with database queries, which is precise enough to accommodate a variety of row- and column-level database policies flexibly while keeping track of disjunctions due to control flow. We validate our mechanism by implementing it in a tool, DiVerT, and demonstrate its feasibility on a number of use cases.

Abstract:Ontologies often require knowledge representation on multiple levels of abstraction, but description logics (DLs) are not well-equipped for supporting this. We propose an extension of DLs in which abstraction levels are first-class citizens and which provides explicit operators for the abstraction and refinement of concepts and roles across multiple abstraction levels, based on conjunctive queries. We prove that reasoning in the resulting family of DLs is decidable while several seemingly harmless variations turn out to be undecidable. We also pinpoint the precise complexity of our logics and several relevant fragments.

Abstract:Extended multi-adjoint logic programming arises as an extension of multi-adjoint normal logic programming where constraints and a special type of aggregator operator have been included. The use of this general aggregator operator permits to consider, for example, different negation operators in the body of the rules of a logic program. We have introduced the syntax and the semantics of this new paradigm, as well as an interesting mechanism for obtaining a multi-adjoint normal logic program from an extended multi-adjoint logic program. This mechanism will allow us to establish technical properties relating the different stable models of both logic programming frameworks. Moreover, it makes possible that the already developed and future theory associated with stable models of multi-adjoint normal logic programs can be applied to extended multi-adjoint logic programs.

Abstract:Disjunctive Answer Set Programming is a powerful declarative programming paradigm with complexity beyond NP. Identifying classes of programs for which the consistency problem is in NP is of interest from the theoretical standpoint and can potentially lead to improvements in the design of answer set programming solvers. One of such classes consists of dual-normal programs, where the number of positive body atoms in proper rules is at most one. Unlike other classes of programs, dual-normal programs have received little attention so far. In this paper we study this class. We relate dual-normal programs to propositional theories and to normal programs by presenting several inter-translations. With the translation from dual-normal to normal programs at hand, we introduce the novel class of body-cycle free programs, which are in many respects dual to head-cycle free programs. We establish the expressive power of dual-normal programs in terms of SE- and UE-models, and compare them to normal programs. We also discuss the complexity of deciding whether dual-normal programs are strongly and uniformly equivalent.

Abstract:We generalize Kracht's theory of internal describability from classical modal logic to the family of all logics canonically associated with varieties of normal lattice expansions (LE algebras). We work in the purely algebraic setting of perfect LEs; the formulas playing the role of Kracht's formulas in this generalized setting pertain to a first order language whose atoms are special inequalities between terms of perfect algebras. Via duality, formulas in this language can be equivalently translated into first order conditions in the frame correspondence languages of several types of relational semantics for LE-logics.

Extensions to Generalized Disjunctive Programming: Hierarchical Structures and First-order Logic

Abstract:Optimization problems with discrete-continuous decisions are traditionally modeled in algebraic form via (non)linear mixed-integer programming. A more systematic approach to modeling such systems is to use Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP), which extends the Disjunctive Programming paradigm proposed by Egon Balas to allow modeling systems from a logic-based level of abstraction that captures the fundamental rules governing such systems via algebraic constraints and logic. Although GDP provides a more general way of modeling systems, it warrants further generalization to encompass systems presenting a hierarchical structure. This work extends the GDP literature to address three major alternatives for modeling and solving systems with nested (hierarchical) disjunctions: explicit nested disjunctions, equivalent single-level disjunctions, and flattening via basic steps. We also provide theoretical proofs on the relaxation tightness of such alternatives, showing that explicitly modeling nested disjunctions is superior to the traditional approach discussed in literature for dealing with nested disjunctions.

Abstract:We introduce a new variant of dependence logic called Boolean dependence logic. In Boolean dependence logic dependence atoms are of the type =(x_1,...,x_n,\alpha), where \alpha is a Boolean variable. Intuitively, with Boolean dependence atoms one can express quantification of relations, while standard dependence atoms express quantification over functions. We compare the expressive power of Boolean dependence logic to dependence logic and first-order logic enriched by partially-ordered connectives. We show that the expressive power of Boolean dependence logic and dependence logic coincide. We define natural syntactic fragments of Boolean dependence logic and show that they coincide with the corresponding fragments of first-order logic enriched by partially-ordered connectives with respect to expressive power. We then show that the fragments form a strict hierarchy.

Abstract:Abstract Using the notion of an elementary loop, Gebser and Schaub (2005. Proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Logic Programming and Nonmonotonic Reasoning ( LPNMR'05 ), 53–65) refined the theorem on loop formulas attributable to Lin and Zhao (2004) by considering loop formulas of elementary loops only. In this paper, we reformulate the definition of an elementary loop, extend it to disjunctive programs, and study several properties of elementary loops, including how maximal elementary loops are related to minimal unfounded sets. The results provide useful insights into the stable model semantics in terms of elementary loops. For a nondisjunctive program, using a graph-theoretic characterization of an elementary loop, we show that the problem of recognizing an elementary loop is tractable. On the other hand, we also show that the corresponding problem is coNP -complete for a disjunctive program. Based on the notion of an elementary loop, we present the class of Head-Elementary-loop-Free (HEF) programs, which strictly generalizes the class of Head-Cycle-Free (HCF) programs attributable to Ben-Eliyahu and Dechter (1994. Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence 12 , 53–87). Like an HCF program, an HEF program can be turned into an equivalent nondisjunctive program in polynomial time by shifting head atoms into the body.

Program Synthesis using Inductive Logic Programming for the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus

Abstract:The Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus (ARC) is a general artificial intelligence benchmark that is currently unsolvable by any Machine Learning method, including Large Language Models (LLMs). It demands strong generalization and reasoning capabilities which are known to be weaknesses of Neural Network based systems. In this work, we propose a Program Synthesis system that uses Inductive Logic Programming (ILP), a branch of Symbolic AI, to solve ARC. We have manually defined a simple Domain Specific Language (DSL) that corresponds to a small set of object-centric abstractions relevant to ARC. This is the Background Knowledge used by ILP to create Logic Programs that provide reasoning capabilities to our system. The full system is capable of generalize to unseen tasks, since ILP can create Logic Program(s) from few examples, in the case of ARC: pairs of Input-Output grids examples for each task. These Logic Programs are able to generate Objects present in the Output grid and the combination of these can form a complete program that transforms an Input grid into an Output grid. We randomly chose some tasks from ARC that dont require more than the small number of the Object primitives we implemented and show that given only these, our system can solve tasks that require each, such different reasoning.
