Abstract:It was conjectured by Reed [B. Reed, ω,α, and χ, Journal of Graph Theory 27 (1998) 177–212] that for any graph G, the graph’s chromatic number χ(G) is bounded above by ⌈Δ(G)+1+ω(G)2⌉, where Δ(G) and ω(G) are the maximum degree and clique number of G, respectively. In this paper we prove that this bound holds if G is the line graph of a multigraph. The proof yields a polynomial time algorithm that takes a line graph G and produces a colouring that achieves our bound.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we consider those graphs that have maximum degree at least 1/ k times their order, where k is a (small) positive integer. A result of Hajnal and Szemerédi concerning equitable vertex‐colorings and an adaptation of the standard proof of Vizing's Theorem are used to show that if the maximum degree of a graph G satisfies Δ( G ) ≥ | V ( G )/ k , then X ″( G ) ≤ Δ( G ) + 2 k + 1. This upper bound is an improvement on the currently available upper bounds for dense graphs having large order.

Abstract:We prove analogs of Brooks' Theorem for the list-distinguishing chromatic number of finite connected graphs. Moreover, we give new examples to determine two sharp upper bounds for the list-distinguishing chromatic number of a graph G in terms of the coloring number of G and the list-chromatic number of G. We also determine the list-distinguishing chromatic number for various families of graphs (example: the book graphs).

Abstract:We show that for a simple graph $G$, $c'(G)\leq\Delta(G)+2$ where $c'(G)$ is the choice index (or edge-list chromatic number) of $G$, and $\Delta(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. As a simple corollary of this result, we show that the total chromatic number $\chi_T(G)$ of a simple graph satisfies the inequality $\chi_T(G)\leq\ \Delta(G)+4$ and the total choice number $c_T(G)$ also satisfies this inequality. We also relate these bounds to the Hall index and the Hall condition index of a simple graph, and to the total Hall number and the total Hall condition number of a simple graph.

Total coloring graphs with large maximum degree

Abstract:We prove that for any graph $G$, the total chromatic number of $G$ is at most $\Delta(G)+2\left\lceil \frac{|V(G)|}{\Delta(G)+1} \right\rceil$. This saves one color in comparison with a result of Hind from 1992. In particular, our result says that if $\Delta(G)\ge \frac{1}{2}|V(G)|$, then $G$ has a total coloring using at most $\Delta(G)+4$ colors. When $G$ is regular and has a sufficient number of vertices, we can actually save an additional two colors. Specifically, we prove that for any $0<\varepsilon <1$, there exists $n_0\in \mathbb{N}$ such that: if $G$ is an $r$-regular graph on $n \ge n_0$ vertices with $r\ge \frac{1}{2}(1+\varepsilon) n$, then $\chi_T(G) \le \Delta(G)+2$. This confirms the Total Coloring Conjecture for such graphs $G$.

Abstract:For integers $k>0$ and $0<r \leq \Delta$ (where $r \leq k$), a conditional $(k,r)$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper $k$-coloring of the vertices of $G$ such that every vertex $v$ of degree $d(v)$ in $G$ is adjacent to vertices with at least $\min\{r, d(v)\}$ differently colored neighbors. The smallest integer $k$ for which a graph $G$ has a conditional $(k,r)$-coloring is called the $r$th order conditional chromatic number, denoted by $\chi_r(G)$. For different values of $r$ we first give results (exact values or bounds for $\chi_r(G)$ depending on $r$) related to the conditional coloring of graphs. Then we obtain $\chi_r(G)$ of certain parameterized graphs viz., windmill graph, line graph of windmill graph, middle graph of friendship graph, middle graph of a cycle, line graph of friendship graph, middle graph of complete $k$-partite graph, middle graph of a bipartite graph and gear graph. Finally we introduce \emph{unique conditional colorability} and give some related results.

Coloring graphs with forbidden almost bipartite subgraphs

Abstract:Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollobás showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. We improve this to a constant, showing $c(F) \leqslant 4$ for every almost bipartite graph $F$. This surprisingly makes the bound independent of $F$ in all the known cases of the conjecture, leading us to make a new conjecture that $c(F)$ is always bounded above by some constant $c$ independent of $F$. We also establish a more general version of our bound in the setting of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) and consider some algorithmic consequences of our results.

Abstract:An $(a:b)$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a function $f$ which maps the vertices of $G$ into $b$-element subsets of some set of size $a$ in such a way that $f(u)$ is disjoint from $f(v)$ for every two adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The fractional chromatic number $\chi_f(G)$ is the infimum of $a/b$ over all pairs of positive integers $a,b$ such that $G$ has an $(a:b)$-coloring. Heckman and Thomas conjectured that the fractional chromatic number of every triangle-free graph $G$ of maximum degree at most three is at most 2.8. Hatami and Zhu proved that $\chi_f(G) \leq 3-3/64 \approx 2.953$. Lu and Peng improved the bound to $\chi_f(G) \leq 3-3/43 \approx 2.930$. Recently, Ferguson, Kaiser, and Král' proved that $\chi_f(G) \leq 32/11 \approx 2.909$. In this paper, we prove that $\chi_f(G) \leq 43/15 \approx 2.867$.

Abstract:For k given graphs H 1 , … , H k, k ≥ 2, the k -color Ramsey number, denoted by R ( H 1 , … , H k ), is the smallest integer N such that if we arbitrarily color the edges of a complete graph of order N with k colors, then it always contains a monochromatic copy of H i colored with i , for some 1 ≤ i ≤ k. Let C m be a cycle of length m , K 1 , n a star of order n + 1 and W n a wheel of order n + 1. In this paper, by using algebraic and probabilistic methods, we first give two lower bounds for ( k + 1 )-color Ramsey number R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) for some special n , which shows the upper bound due to Zhang et al. (2019) is tight in some sense, and then establish a general lower bound for R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) in terms of n and k , which extends the classical result of Burr et al. (1989). Moreover, we show that R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) = R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , W n ) for sufficiently large n .
Coloring minimal Cayley graphs

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

Abstract:Let $G=(V(G), E(G))$ be a multigraph with maximum degree $\Delta(G)$, chromatic index $\chi'(G)$ and total chromatic number $\chi''(G)$. The Total Coloring conjecture proposed by Behzad and Vizing, independently, states that $\chi''(G)\leq \Delta(G)+\mu(G) +1$ for a multigraph $G$, where $\mu(G)$ is the multiplicity of $G$. Moreover, Goldberg conjectured that $\chi''(G)=\chi'(G)$ if $\chi'(G)\geq \Delta(G)+3$ and noticed the conjecture holds when $G$ is an edge-chromatic critical graph. By assuming the Goldberg-Seymour conjecture, we show that $\chi''(G)=\chi'(G)$ if $\chi'(G)\geq \max\{ \Delta(G)+2, |V(G)|+1\}$ in this note. Consequently, $\chi''(G) = \chi'(G)$ if $\chi'(G) \ge \Delta(G) +2$ and $G$ has a spanning edge-chromatic critical subgraph.

Complete characterization of graphs with local total antimagic chromatic number 3

Abstract:A total labeling of a graph $G = (V, E)$ is said to be local total antimagic if it is a bijection $f: V\cup E \to\{1,\ldots ,|V|+|E|\}$ such that adjacent vertices, adjacent edges, and incident vertex and edge have distinct induced weights where the induced weight of a vertex $v$, $w_f(v) = \sum f(e)$ with $e$ ranging over all the edges incident to $v$, and the induced weight of an edge $uv$ is $w_f(uv) = f(u) + f(v)$. The local total antimagic chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $\chi_{lt}(G)$, is the minimum number of distinct induced vertex and edge weights over all local total antimagic labelings of $G$. In this paper, we first obtained general lower and upper bounds for $\chi_{lt}(G)$ and sufficient conditions to construct a graph $H$ with $k$ pendant edges and $\chi_{lt}(H) \in\{\Delta(H)+1, k+1\}$. We then completely characterized graphs $G$ with $\chi_{lt}(G)=3$. Many families of (disconnected) graphs $H$ with $k$ pendant edges and $\chi_{lt}(H) \in\{\Delta(H)+1, k+1\}$ are also obtained.

Colouring random graphs: Tame colourings

Abstract:Given a graph G, a colouring is an assignment of colours to the vertices of G so that no two adjacent vertices are coloured the same. If all colour classes have size at most t, then we call the colouring t-bounded, and the t-bounded chromatic number of G, denoted by $\chi_t(G)$, is the minimum number of colours in such a colouring. Every colouring of G is then $\alpha(G)$-bounded, where $\alpha(G)$ denotes the size of a largest independent set. We study colourings of the random graph G(n, 1/2) and of the corresponding uniform random graph G(n,m) with $m=\left \lfloor \frac 12 {n \choose 2} \right \rfloor$. We show that $\chi_t(G(n,m))$ is maximally concentrated on at most two explicit values for $t = \alpha(G(n,m))-2$. This behaviour stands in stark contrast to that of the normal chromatic number, which was recently shown not to be concentrated on any sequence of intervals of length $n^{1/2-o(1)}$. Moreover, when $t = \alpha(G_{n, 1/2})-1$ and if the expected number of independent sets of size $t$ is not too small, we determine an explicit interval of length $n^{0.99}$ that contains $\chi_t(G_{n,1/2})$ with high probability. Both results have profound consequences: the former is at the core of the intriguing Zigzag Conjecture on the distribution of $\chi(G_{n, 1/2})$ and justifies one of its main hypotheses, while the latter is an important ingredient in the proof of a non-concentration result for $\chi(G_{n,1/2})$ that is conjectured to be optimal. These two results are consequences of a more general statement. We consider a class of colourings that we call tame, and provide tight bounds for the probability of existence of such colourings via a delicate second moment argument. We then apply those bounds to the two aforementioned cases. As a further consequence of our main result, we prove two-point concentration of the equitable chromatic number of G(n,m).

Brooks-type theorems for relaxations of square colorings

Abstract:The following relaxation of proper coloring the square of a graph was recently introduced: for a positive integer $h$, the proper $h$-conflict-free chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $\chi_{pcf}^h(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ has a proper $k$-coloring where every vertex $v$ has $\min\{deg_G(v),h\}$ colors appearing exactly once on its neighborhood. Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski put forth a Brooks-type conjecture: if $G$ is a graph with $\Delta(G)\ge 3$, then $\chi_{pcf}^1(G)\leq \Delta(G)+1$. The best known result regarding the conjecture is $\chi_{pcf}^1(G)\leq 2\Delta(G)+1$, which is implied by a result of Pach and Tardos. We improve upon the aforementioned result for all $h$, and also enlarge the class of graphs for which the conjecture is known to be true. Our main result is the following: for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G) \ge h+2$, then $\chi_{pcf}^h(G)\le (h+1)\Delta(G)-1$; this is tight up to the additive term as we explicitly construct infinitely many graphs $G$ with $\chi_{pcf}^h(G)=(h+1)(\Delta(G)-1)$. We also show that the conjecture is true for chordal graphs, and obtain partial results for quasi-line graphs and claw-free graphs. Our main result also improves upon a Brooks-type result for $h$-dynamic coloring.

Oriented Colouring Graphs of Bounded Degree and Degeneracy

Abstract:This paper considers upper bounds on the oriented chromatic number $\chi_o(G)$, of an oriented graph $G$ in terms of its $2$-dipath chromatic number $\chi_2(G)$, degeneracy $d(G)$, and maximum degree $\Delta(G)$. In particular, we show that for all graphs $G$ with $\chi_2(G) \leq k$ where $k \geq 2$ and $d(G) \leq t$ where $t \geq \log_2(k)$, $\chi_o(G) = 33/10(k t^2 2^t)$. This improves an upper bound of MacGillivray, Raspaud, and Swartz of the form $\chi_o(G) \leq 2^{\chi_2(G)} -1$ to a polynomial upper bound for many classes of graphs, in particular, those with bounded degeneracy. Additionally, we asymptotically improve bounds for the oriented chromatic number in terms of maximum degree and degeneracy. For instance, we show that $\chi_o(G) \leq (2\ln2 +o(1))\Delta^2 2^\Delta$ for all graphs, and $\chi_o(G) \leq (2+o(1))\Delta d 2^d$ for graphs where degeneracy grows sublinearly in maximum degree. Here the asypmtotics are in $\Delta$. The former improves the asymptotics of a results by Kostochka, Sopena, and Zhu \cite{kostochka1997acyclic}, while the latter improves the asymptotics of a result by Aravind and Subramanian \cite{aravind2009forbidden}. Both improvements are by a constant factor.
