Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed alkyne dimerization represents a powerful method for the construction of enynes. However, the ambiguous hydrogen transfer mechanism during the dimerization has resulted in controlling the regio-, stereo-, and, where applicable, chemoselectivity remaining a long-standing challenge. Herein, a combination of DFT calculations and quasi-classical MD simulations was used to interrogate the dynamic motion of hydrogen in cobalt-catalyzed alkyne dimerization. The collective results inspired us to propose, for the first time, a substrate-dependent differential hydride transfer model involving either concerted oxidative hydrogen transfer or stepwise oxidative addition, followed by alkyne insertion. The practicability and universality of this oxidative hydride transfer mechanism were further validated by the theoretical studies of experimentally observed selective cross- and homo-dimerization. Charge distribution analyses depicted that the differentiation between those two hydride transfer mechanisms originates from the alpha-silicon effect, which can stabilize the neighboring negative charge of the alkyne. Furthermore, a comprehensive DFT study of the substituent effects of alkynes reveals that the electron-withdrawing group will accelerate the oxidative hydride transfer process, which can open up avenues for mechanistic-oriented selective dimerization.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalysed, redox-neutral dehydrosilylation of alkenes is a long-standing challenge in organic synthesis, with current methods suffering from low selectivity and narrow scope. In this study, we report a general and simple method for the manganese-catalysed dehydrosilylation and hydrosilylation of alkenes, with Mn2(CO)10 as a catalyst precursor, by using a ligand-tuned metalloradical reactivity strategy. This enables versatility and controllable selectivity with a 1:1 ratio of alkenes and silanes, and the synthetic robustness and practicality of this method are demonstrated using complex alkenes and light olefins. The selectivity of the reaction has been studied using density functional theory calculations, showing the use of an iPrPNP ligand to favour dehydrosilylation, while a JackiePhos ligand favours hydrosilylation. The reaction is redox-neutral and atom-economical, exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, and is suitable for various synthetic applications on a gram scale.
Noncovalent Interaction- and Steric Effect-Controlled Regiodivergent Selectivity in Dimeric Manganese-Catalyzed Hydroarylation of Internal Alkynes: A Computational Study.

Abstract:Selective hydroarylation of internal alkynes catalyzed by a dimeric manganese complex provides a powerful strategy for the construction of multisubstituted alkenes. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental studies were carried out to explore the mechanism and origin of regiodivergent hydroarylation of internal alkynes reported by our group. The results demonstrate that this reaction first proceeds via a bimetallic mechanism to generate the active catalyst that subsequently undergoes a monometallic mechanism to run the three-stage catalytic cycle: alkyne migratory insertion, protonation, and active catalyst regeneration. Alkyne migratory insertion is considered as the regioselectivity-determining step. Energy decomposition analyses on insertion transition states suggest that the interaction between the substrate and catalyst is mainly responsible for the observed exclusive γ-selectivity of 1a, while the deformation of these two sections induced by the sterically hindered phenyl group and aryl group accounts for the complete β-position arylation of 1e. The decrease of γ-selectivity with the regulation of a tertiary alcohol motif in 1a originates from the reduced noncovalent interaction. The computational results provide important insights into the origin of regiodivergent selectivities and useful information for further designing and adjusting the strategy in Mn-catalyzed alkyne hydroarylation.

Abstract:A highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed sequential hydrosilylation/hydrogenation of alkynes was developed to afford chiral silanes. This one-pot method is operationally simple and atom economic. It makes use of relatively simple and readily available starting materials, namely alkynes, silanes, and hydrogen gas, to construct more valuable chiral silanes. Primary mechanistic studies demonstrated that highly regioselective hydrosilylation of alkynes with silanes occurred as a first step, and the subsequent cobaltcatalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of the resulting vinylsilanes showed good enantioselectivity.

Abstract:Transition metal catalyzed alkynes functionalization reaction can produce useful organic reagents, which is the most atom-economical, green and sustainable process to combine triple bonds into functional molecules. In this work, the mechanism of alkyne hydrogermylation reaction catalyzed by ∙Mn(CO)5 and the influences factors on the reactivity are investigated based on the DFT calculations. The calculated results show that the whole reaction involves three processes: the first hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process, radical transformation process, and the second HAT process. The radical transformation process is the rate-determining step. The title reactions have good selectivities and the Z-Pro are the main products. The mechanisms of hydrosilylation and hydrogermylation of alkynes are similar, other than the energy barrier of hydrogermylation is lower than that of hydrosilylation. The periods of E (E=C, Si, Ge and Sn) atom in HEPhMe2, the substituents on alkynes and HEPhMe2, and the nature of solvents are in connection with the reactivity of the title reaction. The more positive charge on E atom and more aromatic substituents on alkynes, the higher reactivity is. The more negative Vs, min of solvent, the lower yield of the reaction is. Our results provide detailed explanation to the experimental results and shed light on the further development of alkyne functionalization reaction.

Abstract:A highly chemo-, regio- and stereoselective cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov hydrosilylation of alkynes was developed. Various functionalized groups, such as halides, free alcohols, free aniline, ketones, esters, amides, and nitriles are tolerated, which may lead to further applications and late-stage derivatizations. To date, this is the most efficient cobalt catalytic system (TOF=65520h(-1); TOF=turnover frequency) for hydrosilylation of alkynes. The Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reactions of vinylsilanes with aryl iodides underwent smoothly to afford 1,1-diarylethenes. A unique regioselectivity-controllable hydrosilylation/hydroboration reaction of alkynes was also described.

Abstract:The mechanisms and chemo- and regioselectivities of Ru(II)-catalyzed decarboxylative C-H alkenylation of aryl carboxylic acids with alkynes were investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic cycle involves sequential carboxylate-directed C-H activation, alkyne insertion, decarboxylation and protonation. The facile tether-assisted decarboxylation step directs the intermediate toward the desired decarboxylative alkenylation, instead of typical annulation and double alkenylation pathways. The decarboxylation barrier is very sensitive to the tether length, and only the seven-membered ring intermediate can selectively undergo the designed decarboxylation, suggesting a tether-dependent chemoselectivity. This tether-dependent chemoselectivity also applies to the alkyl tethers. In addition, the polarity of solvent is found to control the chemoselectivity between the decarboxylative alkenylation and [4 + 2] annulation. Solvent with low polarity (toluene) favors the decarboxylation pathway, leading to the decarboxylative alkenylation. Solvent with high polarity (methanol) favors the ionic stepwise C-O reductive elimination pathway, leading to the [4 + 2] annulation. To understand the origins of regioselectivity with asymmetric alkynes, the distortion/interaction analysis was applied to the alkyne insertion transition states, and led to a predictive frontier molecular orbital model. The asymmetric alkynes selectively use the terminal with the larger HOMO orbital coefficient to form the C-C bond in the insertion step.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed highly Markovnikov-type and enantioselective hydrosilylation of alkenes is developed for the efficient synthesis of valuable chiral dihydrosilanes. This protocol is operationally simple and atom-economy, and using relatively simple and readily available starting materials. The reaction is suitable for both aryl and aliphatic alkenes with excellent functional group tolerability. The reaction could be easily carried out in a gram-scale. The TOF and TON is up to 1800 and 860, respectively.

Abstract:Here, we reported a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic electrophile to access valuable and branched skipped dienes (1,4-dienes) with good regioselectivity. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exceptional substrate scope. The reactions could be carried out in gram-scale with TON (turn over number) up to 1160, and the products could be easily derivatized. The preliminary mechanism of electrophilic allylation of α-selective cobalt alkenyl intermediate was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiment and kinetic studies.

Abstract:Selectivity control is a challenging and important subject in semihydrogenation of alkynes. Here, a combined theoretical and experimental study was performed to reveal the origin of the chemo- and stereos electivity in cobalt-catalyzed stereodivergent semihydrogenation of alkynes. Three NNP and PNP type pincer ligands were considered in calculation. The computational results show that over-reduction of the alkene is forbidden in this catalytic system because the alkylcobalt(l) intermediate formed by alkene insertion prefers to undergo beta-H elimination rather than protonation of the Co-C bond. Distortion-interaction analysis along the reaction coordinate suggests that the higher distortion energy during methanol mediated protonation of the alkylcobalt(I) species suppresses formation of the side product, thereby determined the chemoselectivity. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the active cobalt(l) hydride species formed by pre-catalyst [C] has strong catalytic activity for alkene isomerization. Subsequent control experiments combined with free energy comparison confirms this conclusion and reveals that fast deactivation of catalyst and the weaker reactivity of the cis-alkene intermediate in the presence of the alkyne substrate prevents Z/E alkene isomerization using pre-catalyst [C]. This results in the divergent stereos electivity in the presence of different cobalt pincer complexes. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:The dirhodium(II) complexes with bridging phosphine and OAc ligands showed high reactivity and selectivities in olefin dehydrosilylation. In order to determine the structure of the actural catalyst which cannot be determined experimentally, the geometries of the dirhodium catalyst, the detailed catalytic mechanism, as well as the stereo- and chemoselectivities of the title reaction were studied by DFT calculations. The results showed that one OAc group is monodentate and the other is bidentate in the dirhodium catalyst C'. The determined catalytic cycle consists of four processes: Rh-H bond activation in C', Si-H bond activation in alkoxysilane, alkylene insertion into Rh-Si bond, followed by β-H elimination or σ-metathesis reaction. Among them, the alkylene insertion process is the rate-determining state. The stereoselectivity of the title reaction is controlled by the steric effect and orbital interactions between the alkyene and dirhodium catalysts in the process of β-H elimination process. The chemoselectivity is regulated by the presence of the axial ligand in the dirhodium catalyst, when there is an axial ligand coordinated to the Rh atom, E-alkene is the main product, whereas alkane would be obtained in the absence of axial ligand. Our work determines the structure of the actural catalyst, and provides explanations and predictions for the activity, chemo- and stereoselectivity control of olefin dehydrosilylation.

Abstract:The use of synergistic catalytic strategy can usually circumvent the intrinsic limitations of one catalytic system. In this communication, we disclose a cooperative catalysis strategy of manganese and iminium catalysis to realize selective hydroalkenylation of unsaturated aldehydes and ketones. Its success stems from the LUMO activation of unsaturated carbonyl compounds with secondary amines as the organocatalyst and the synergistic HOMO activation of alkenylboronic acids with Mn2 (CO)8 Br2 . This protocol exhibits several synthetic advances, e.g., simple operation, good functional group compatibility and good regioselectivity. The theoretical calculation indicates the migratory insertion followed by demetallation-isomerization process is kinetically more favorable than Michael-like nucleophilic addition. The use of proline-derived organocatalyst can deliver the desired products in moderate enantioselectivity.

Abstract:An iron-catalyzed highly anti-Markovnikov selective, enantioselective hydrosilylation of vinylcyclopropanes with PhSiH3 was reported for the preparation of valuable chiral allylic silanes via stereospecific C-C bond cleavage. Simultaneously, difficultly prepared chiral VCPs could be also obtained with moderate to excellent enantioselectivity via this kinetic resolution pathway. The chiral Z-allylic silanes could be converted to various chiral allylic derivatives. A possible mechanism via an iron-silyl species was proposed based on experimental and computational studies.
Dimeric Manganese‐Catalyzed Hydroalkenylation of Alkynes with a Versatile Silicon‐Based Directing Group

Abstract:Herein, we present a manganese-catalyzed, branched-selective hydroalkenylation of terminal alkynes, under mild conditions through facile installation of a versatile silanol as a removable directing group. With an alkenyl boronic acid as the coupling partner, this reaction produces stereodefined (E,E)-1,3-dienes with high regio-, chemo- and stereoselectivity. The protocol features mild reaction conditions such as room temperature and an air atmosphere, while maintaining excellent functional group compatibility. The resulting 1,3-dienesilanol products serve as versatile building blocks, as the removal of the silanol group allows for the synthesis of both branched terminal 1,3-dienes for downstream coupling reactions, as well as stereoselective construction of linear (E,E)-1,3-dienes and (E,E,E)- or (E,E,Z)-1,3,5-trienes. In addition, a Diels-Alder cycloaddition can smoothly and selectively deliver silicon-containing pentasubstituted cyclohexene derivatives. Mechanistic investigations, in conjunction with DFT calculations, suggest a bimetallic synergistic activation model to account for the observed enhanced catalytic efficiency and good regioselectivity.

A Mechanistic Study of Chiral Manganese Porphyrin-Catalyzed Enantioselective C−H Hydroxylation Reaction

Abstract:We employed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the mechanism and origin of enantioselectivity in the C−H hydroxylation reaction catalyzed by a chiral manganese porphyrin complex. Our study reveals that the chiral manganese porphyrin forms a two-point hydrogen bonding interaction with the substrate. Specifically, the hydrogen atom abstraction of the pro-( S ) C−H bond of the methylene pro-( S ) C−H bond at the heterocyclic C-3 position is 1.9 kcal mol-1 favored over the hydrogen atom abstraction of the pro-( R ) C−H bond. This preferential reactivity results in the predominant formation of ( S )-hydroxylated products. Our DFT calculations are consistent with the experimental findings of high enantioselectivity in the chiral manganese porphyrin catalyzed C(sp 3 )−H hydroxylation of lactam derivatives. The observed enantioselectivity arises from the formation of two-point hydrogen bonding between lactam derivatives and manganese porphyrin catalysts. Moreover, our computations indicate varying degrees of substrate distortion upon attack by high-valent manganese oxygen complexes at different hydrogen atoms.
