Abstract:DC distribution systems play indispensable and significant roles in power systems for most loads, such as renewable sources and charging piles that are dc-supplied. A single line-to-ground fault will not cause an overcurrent due to the large grounding resistance applied in the dc side of the distribution system. However, the dc line-to-line fault results in shutting down of all the converters, which can greatly prolong the fault recovery time. It is difficult to extract fault information accurately due to the converter's time-varying impedance and strong nonlinearity during a fault. Therefore, to address the problem of line-to-line short-circuit faults, dc protections that offer quick fault detection and isolation are essential. This article proposes a current correlation based new protection algorithm (only considers line-to-line short-circuit faults) for the dc distribution system. The fault current characteristics are investigated in detail and their correlation relationship is adopted to fully distinguish internal and external faults. Simulation and experimental results show that short-circuit faults of different fault resistances can be distinguished within 0.5 ms and the performance of the proposed protection is little affected by distributed capacitance and noise.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily addresses the issues of energy efficiency and spectrum efficiency, particularly focusing on the optimization design in Energy Harvesting Cognitive Radio Networks (EH-CRN). Specifically, the goal of the paper is to maximize the average channel capacity of secondary users (as achievable throughput) by jointly optimizing energy harvesting and spectrum sensing, under the constraints of energy causality and collision. To achieve this goal, the authors consider a simple EH-CRN system model that includes a primary link and a secondary link, where the secondary transmitter is equipped with energy harvesting devices and is allowed to opportunistically access the channel when the primary link is detected to be idle. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **System Modeling**: - Established a primary network model where the primary user adopts a time-slot network model. - Proposed a cognitive radio network model, including the spectrum sensing process and energy harvesting model. 2. **Formulation of the Joint Optimization Problem**: - Defined the probabilities of sensing idle/occupied channels (\(P_i\) and \(P_o\)), which represent the probabilities that the secondary transmitter chooses to perform spectrum sensing in active mode. - Considered three constraints: energy causality constraint, collision constraint, and the time correlation constraint of sensing idle/occupied channel probabilities. - The objective function is defined as the average throughput of the secondary network. 3. **Theoretical Analysis**: - Using the above models and constraints, the joint optimization problem is proposed to find the optimal energy harvesting rate (\(e_h\)) and detection threshold (\(\varepsilon\)), as well as the probabilities of sensing idle/occupied channels, to maximize the average throughput of the secondary users. - Through lemmas and theorems, the parameter settings required to achieve maximum throughput under different conditions are derived in detail. 4. **Numerical Results**: - The effectiveness of the theoretical analysis is verified through computer simulations, and the performance of the proposed maximum achievable throughput is demonstrated. In summary, this paper aims to improve the overall performance of the EH-CRN system, particularly enhancing its energy efficiency and spectrum efficiency, by reasonably configuring energy harvesting and spectrum sensing strategies.
