Abstract:A heterotrimetallic [Cu2PdL4]2+ lantern-type coordination cage has been assembled in a single self-assembly step. Heterotopic ligands, comprised of both carboxylate and pyridyl binding groups, facilitate the simultaneous coordination of Cu(II) and Pd(II) ions, respectively. The resultant cage is a fusion of the two common lantern-type cage motifs, Cu4L4 and Pd2L4. It is envisioned that this simple design strategy will ease the assembly of structurally complex, low-symmetry cages in general.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of mixed-metal coordination cages, which can act as hosts to encapsule guest molecules, is a subject of intensive research, and the utilization of metalloligand is an effective method to construct a designed heterometallic architecture. Herein, a series of heterometallic cages with half-sandwich Rh, Ir and Ru fragments using Cu(II) -metalloligand as a building block by a stepwise approach is reported. The cavity sizes of the cages could be controlled easily by the lengths of the organic ligands. Because the metalloligands in the oxalate-based cage are somewhat distorted and concave, there are weak Cu⋅⋅⋅O interactions in the molecules, forming a binuclear copper unit. By increasing the height of the cages using longer ligands, 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (H2 CA), the organometallic boxes display interesting host-guest behavior, which are made large enough to accommodate some large molecules, such as pyrene and [Pt(acac)2 ]. Interestingly, the heterometallic cage with larger cavity size can transfer into a homometallic hexanuclear prism in the presence of pyrazine.

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Heterometallic‐organic cages with customized cavities: constructed by bottom‐up step‐wise coordination‐driven self‐assembly

Abstract:accurately synthesizing coordination‐driven metal‐organic cages with customized shape and cavity remain a great challenge for chemists. In this work, a bottom‐up step‐wise coordination‐driven self‐assembly approach was put forward. Employing this strategy, three terpyridyl heterometallic‐organic truncated tetrahedral cages with different sizes and cavity were precisely synthesized. Firstly, the coordination of tripodal organic ligands with Ru2+ afforded dendritic metal‐organic ligands L1‐L3. Then the Ru building blocks complexed with Fe2+ and shrunk to form the desired heterometallic‐organic cages (C1‐C3). These discrete heterometallic‐organic supramolecular cages were fully characterized and displayed the large and open cavities varied from 7205 Å3 to 9384 Å3. Notably, these cages could not be directly constructed by single‐step assembly process using initial organic ligands or dimeric metal‐organic ligands, indicative of the irreplaceability of a bottom‐up step‐wise assembly strategy for size‐customized architectures. This work paves a new way for precisely constructing metal‐organic cages with well‐defined cavities.

Abstract:We report the stepwise synthesis of a novel series of heterometallic gold(I)/palladium(II) complexes supported by heteroditopic imidazol‐2‐ylidene/triazol‐5‐ylidene ligands. All new compounds were characterized by means of 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, melting points, and elemental analyses. The versatility of the ligand platforms, additionally allows for the preparation of cationic chelate biscarbenic palladium(II) complexes through full deprotonation of the mixed azolium precursors. Characterization studies were completed by the determination of the molecular structures of some synthetic intermediates. The new biscarbenic palladium(II) complexes were tested as catalysts in the crosscoupling of boronic acid to a variety of chloroarenes and the hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes. Both catalytic processes provide good to excellent yields under low catalyst loadings.

Abstract:Different types of multinuclear half-sandwich rhodium macrocycles and cages were designed and synthesized by using two similar multifunctional hydroxamate ligands (pyrazine-2-hydroxamic acid (NaHL1) and 4,4-bipyridine-2-hydroxamic acid (KHL2)) featuring one monodentate site and two pairs of chelating sites. The Rh-III-Pd-II heterometallic macrocycles were constructed by using the semi-open palladium(II) source [Pd(en)Cl-2] with two free acceptor sites. However, only one kind of macrocycle was found when the shorter ligand L-1 was used, while in for the larger ligand, various spectroscopic techniques demonstrated the coexistence of hexanuclear and octanuclear macrocycles in solution and the proportions of both components depended on concentration and temperature. The palladium salt Pd(NO3)(2), as a source of naked Pd2+, was introduced to assemble the cuboid-shaped cage composed of two types of metal ions and three types of organic ligands. In addition, two silver(I)-containing mixed-metal complexes bridged by pyrazine were obtained, in which two forms of decanuclear complex with C-2v and C-2h point symmetry cocrystallizedone is a polymeric structure and the other is a discrete cage. However, the third form, with D-2 point symmetry, was found in the larger cage.

Abstract:Multicomponent coordination-driven self-assembly has proved to be a convenient approach to prepare advanced supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), especially for those with three-dimensional structures. Herein, we report the preparation of three tetragonal prismatic cages via the self-assembly of Pt(PEt3)2(OTf)2, three different linear dipyridyl ligands and porphyrin-based sodium benzoate ligands. Due to the efficient charge separation in the coordination process of Pt(PEt3)2(OTf)2 with pyridine and carboxylic acid and the directionality of metal-coordination bonds, these cages were prepared in high isolated yields (more than 90%). The absorption and emission properties as well as the singlet oxygen quantum yields of these cages were also studied, showing their potential applications as contrast agents for bio-imaging and photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy.

Abstract:The electronic effect arising from the different bidentate chelating sites on hydroxamate ligands allows selective coordination modes for the half-sandwich Ir/Rh metal centers. Despite the potential for obtaining a random statistical mixture of diastereoisomers as a consequence of differences in connectivity, only D-2 symmetric octanuclear cages were formed selectively by using asymmetric pyridyl-carboxylate bridging ligands.

Abstract:The development of three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular coordination complexes is of great interest from both fundamental and application points of view because these materials are useful in molecular catalysis, separation and purification, sensing, etc. Herein, we describe the synthesis of two Klärner's molecular-clip-based tetrapyridyl donors, which possess a C-shaped structure as shown by X-ray analysis, and subsequently use them to prepare four convex trigonal-prismatic cages via coordination-driven self-assembly with two 180° diplatinum(II) acceptors. The cages are fully characterized by multinuclear NMR (31P and 1H) analysis, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy, electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and UV/vis absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, the incorporation of molecular-clip-based ligands provides these cages with free cavities to encapsulate fullerene C60 via aromatic interactions, which may be useful for fullerene separation and purification. The studies described herein enlarge the scope of the platinum(II)-based directional bonding approach in the preparation of curved 3D metallacages and their host-guest chemistry.

Abstract:The syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of 2-D Hofmann-like motif {Fe II (alkyl-pyridine) 2 [Au I (CN) 2 ] 2 } (alkyl = 3,4-dimethyl ( 1 ), 4-ethyl ( 2 ), 4-isopropyl ( 3 )), {Fe II (alkyl-pyridine) 2 [Au I (CN) 2 ] 2 }∙1/2(alkyl-pyridine) (alkyl = 3,5-dimethyl ( 4 )), and {Fe II (X-Isonicotinate) 2 [Au I (CN) 2 ] 2 } (X = allyl ( 5 ), phenyl ( 6 )) have been investigated. In spite of a wide range of substituent sizes, the structures of 1 - 3 , 5 , and 6 are almost crystallographically identical. The 2-D layer consists of an octahedral Fe II ion coordinated with the nitrogen atoms in [Au I (CN) 2 ] linear units at equatorial positions and monodentate py derivatives at axial positions. The adjacent two layers interact via intermetallic Au–Au interactions, forming a bilayer structure. The distance between stacking bilayers is associated with bulky substituent ligands. With increasing bulkiness, the interlayer distance expands without any transformation in the crystal structure. Compound 4 possesses guest space where uncoordinated 3,5-dimethyl-pyridine is present. Compounds 1 - 4 and 6 undergo spin transitions. Only 5 retains the high-spin state characteristic. These constant structures are similar to formerly reported Ag derivatives {Fe II (alkyl-pyridine) 2 [Ag I (CN) 2 ] 2 }. The related Ag and Au families are compared and discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The motivation for making heterometallic compounds stemmed from their emergent synergistic properties and enhanced capabilities for applications. However, the atomically precisely controlled synthesis of heterometallic compounds remains a daunting challenge of the complications that arise when applying several metals and linkers. Herein, a stepwise and controlled method is reported for the accurate addition of second and third metals to homometallic aluminum macrocycles based on the synergistic coordination and hard‐soft acid‐base theory. These heterometallic compounds showed a good Lewis acid catalytic effect, and the addition of hetero‐metals significantly improved the catalytic effect and rate, among that the conversion rate of compound AlOC‐133 reached 99.9% within half an hour. This method combines both the independent controllability of stepwise assembly with the universality of one‐step methods. Based on the large family of clusters, the establishment of this method paves the way for the controllable and customized molecular‐level synthesis of heterometallic materials and creates materials customized for preferential application.

Non-statistical assembly of multicomponent [Pd2ABCD] cages

Abstract:Self-assembled hosts, inspired by biological receptors and catalysts, show application potential in sustainable synthesis, energy conversion and medicine. Implementing multiple functionalities in the form of distinguishable building blocks, however, is difficult without risking narcissistic self-sorting or a statistical mess. Here we report a systematic series of integratively self-assembled heteroleptic cages in which two square-planar PdII cations are bridged by four different bis-pyridyl ligands, A, B, C and D, via synergistic effects to exclusively form a single isomer-the lantern-shaped cage [Pd2ABCD]. This self-sorting goal-forming just one out of 55 possible structures-is reached under full thermodynamic control and can be realized progressively (by combining progenitors, such as [Pd2A2C2] with [Pd2B2D2]), directly from ligands and PdII cations or by mixing all four corresponding homoleptic cages. The rational design of complex multicomponent assemblies that enables the modular incorporation of diverse chemical moieties will advance their applicability in functional nanosystems.
A Combined Experimental and Computational Exploration of Heteroleptic cis‐Pd2L2L'2 Coordination Cages through Geometric Complementarity

Abstract:Heteroleptic (mixed‐ligand) coordination cages are of interest as host systems with more structurally and functionally complex cavities than homoleptic architectures. The design of heteroleptic cages, however, is far from trivial. In this work, we experimentally probed the self‐assembly of Pd(II) ions with binary ligand combinations in a combinatorial fashion to search for new cis‐Pd2L2L'2 heteroleptic cages. A hierarchy of computational analyses was then applied to these systems with the aim of elucidating key factors for rationalising self‐assembly outcomes. Simple and inexpensive geometric analyses were shown to be effective in identifying complementary ligand pairs. Preliminary results demonstrated the viability of relatively rapid semi‐empirical calculations for predicting the topology of thermodynamically favoured assemblies with rigid ligands, whilst more flexible systems proved challenging. Stemming from this, key challenges were identified for future work developing effective computational forecasting tools for self‐assembled metallo‐supramolecular systems.

Abstract:Abstract Tuning the surface-embellishing ligands of metal nanoparticles (NPs) is a powerful strategy to modulate their morphology, surface electronic and functional features, impacting their catalytic activity and selectivity. In this work, we reported the design and synthesis of a polytriazolium organic cage PIC-T, capable of stabilizing PdNPs within its discrete cavity. The obtained material (denoted Pd@PCC-T) is highly durable and monodispersed with narrow particle-size distribution of 2.06 ± 0.02 nm, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance and recyclability in the Sonogashira coupling and the tandem reaction to synthesize benzofuran derivatives. Further investigation indicates that the modulation of NHC sites embedded in the organic cage has an impact on NPs’ catalytic efficiency, thus providing a novel methodology to design superior NPs catalysts.

Abstract:A series of half-sandwich iridium-based complexes bearing 1,4-benzenebis (N,N'-dicyclohexylamidine) (H2L1) or 4,4'-bisphenylbis(N,N'-dicyclohexylamidine) (H2L2) has been synthesized and characterized. Treatment of [Cp*IrCl2](2) (Cp* = eta(5)-pentamethyl-cyclo pentadienyl) with deprotonated H2L1 or H2L2 at low temperature resulted in formation of binuclear complexes [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-1) and [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-2). They were chosen as precursors to construct macrocycles and cages. Tetranuclear metallamacrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-1)(2) (pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) and [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-2)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) were assembled by the reaction of complex [Cp*IrCl](2) (L-1) or [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-2) with pyrazine after the removal of chloride from the iridium centers with silver salt AgOTf (OTf = O2SCF3). When 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tpt) is used instead of pyrazine under the same conditions, hexanuclear metallacages [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-1)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) and [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-2)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) were formed. Single-crystal X-ray analysis indicated that the cation of complex [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-1)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) is a rectangular structure, while the cation of complex [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-2)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) is seriously distorted, nearly to a tetrahedral state. Moreover, complexes [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-1)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) and [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-2)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) are prism-like cages with large cavity size, which can be prepared in very high yield in the absence of templates. Surprisingly, solutions of multinuclear complexes are very sensitive to carbon monoxide, in which the frameworks were destroyed, giving the binuclear complexes [(Cp*Ir)(2)(CO)(2)(L-1)][OTf](2) and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(CO)(2)(L-2)][OTf](2).

Abstract:The size complementarity between a host and a guest is a critical prerequisite for selective molecular recognition. Numerous artificial host systems have been designed to achieve size-selective recognition and chemical transformations. However, the inherent challenge lies in the fixed selectivity governed by a size-exclusion mechanism dictated by the host's structure. Modulating the selectivity necessitates structural modifications of hosts. Examples of host systems with modifiable size-selectivity are rare. In this study, we present an approach to modulating guest-selectivity via endo -functionalization of supra-molecular cavities. Heteroleptic Pd 2 A 3 B-cages are constructed with a Pd 2 A 3 precursor or directly from palladium ions and relevant ligands. Furthermore, the simultaneous and selective formation of multiple hetero-cages was achieved by simply mixing Pd II and the free ligands in a one-pot reaction. The fidelity of the assembly process relies on cooperative steric control at the periphery and within the cavity of the hetero-cages, respectively. The central steric group also functions as the endohedral moiety. Variations of the endohedral groups facilitate facile and modular derivatization of the microenvironment within the cages, enabling the fine-tuning of guest binding affinities as evidenced by titration experiments. This strategy offers a new solution for the development of customized host structures.
