Abstract:Since the publication of Birger Wernerfelt's seminal article on the `Resource-based view of the firm' in 1984, the strategic management field has embraced the notion that firms are fundamentally heterogeneous in terms of their resources and internal capabilities. This paper assesses the development of the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm from Wernerfelt's own perspective. Given his limited engagement in the strategic management field over the previous decades, we asked Wernerfelt to revisit his work and to comment on the critical issues which have subsequently arisen as the RBV has developed into a dominant paradigm in strategic management.

Abstract:The resource-based view can be positioned relative to at least three theoretical traditions: SCP-based theories of industry determinants of firm performance, neo-classical microeconomics, and evolutionary economics. In the 1991 article, only the first of these ways of positioning the resourcebased view is explored. This article briefly discusses some of the implications of positioning the resource-based view relative to these other two literatures; it also discusses some of the empirical implications of each of these different resource-based theories.

Abstract:Since the 1991 publication of the first Journal of Management special issue devoted to resource-based inquiry, resource-based theory (RBT) has evolved from a nascent, upstart perspective to one of the most prominent and powerful theories for understanding organizations. Indeed, 20 years after that landmark issue, RBT appears to have reached maturity as a theory. One implication of this maturity is that RBT lies at a critical juncture, one that will be followed either by revitalization of the theory or by its decline. In this introductory article, the authors provide a brief overview of the contributions provided by the commentaries and articles contained in this third Journal of Management special issue on RBT. These contributions center on five themes: interlinkages with other perspectives, processes of resource acquisition and development, the micro-foundations of RBT, RBT and sustainability, and method and measurement issues. Their view is that the commentaries and articles collectively offer a foundation for extending RBT in meaningful new directions and steering clear of decline. They also offer their thoughts about some key opportunities within each of the themes for further revitalizing research involving the RBT.

Abstract:The resource-based view (RBV) of the firm has been around for over 20 years—during which time it has been both widely taken up and subjected to considerable criticism. The authors review and assess the principal critiques evident in the literature, arguing they fall into eight categories. They conclude the RBV’s core message can withstand criticism from five of these quite well provided the RBV’s variables, boundaries, and applicability are adequately specified. Three critiques that cannot be readily dismissed call for further theorizing and research. They arise from the indeterminate nature of two of the RBV’s basic concepts—resource and value—and the narrow conceptualization of a firm’s competitive advantage. As their suggestions for this work indicate, the authors feel the RBV community has clung to an inappropriately narrow neoclassical economic rationality, thereby diminishing its opportunities for progress. The authors’ suggestions may assist with developing the RBV into a more viable theory of competitive advantage, especially if it is moved into a genuinely dynamic framework.

Abstract:Purpose This study sought to develop an aggregated assessment of the literature on the resource-based view (RBV). The main aim was to map the RBV field based on a systematic literature review (SLR) of 226 academic articles published in refereed journals from 1994 to 2022. Design/methodology/approach Two bibliometric analysis methods were used: bibliographic coupling and co-citation. These measures are complementary because bibliographic coupling is retrospective in nature and co-citation is forward-looking. Findings The analysis identified the most influential studies, top-cited articles and journals and six major thematic clusters: RBV, customer orientation and alliance portfolio, resource-based theory, firm performance, entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and dynamic capabilities. Originality/value This research was based on a combination of bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis. The results provide a better understanding of the RBV field's intellectual structure, which reveals potential new lines of future research.

Abstract:Since 1990's,significant and rapid development can be seen in the field of theory of the firm(TF).Based on relative literatures in the latest 5 years,the author introduces the main works on entrepreneurial theory of the firm(ETF).Then,the author proposes that the breakthrough of those theories can be classified into two aspects:(1) The process of value-creating,rather than the deployment of resource,has become the central issue of ETF.ETF gives a better interpretation of the phenomena of firm that is obviously an open system.Moreover,ETF is a dynamic theory and apply itself to explain the law of evolutionary path of firm.(2) ETF emphasizes the role of decision-maker,and this promote it converge with decision-making science and organizational learning field.All in all,ETF assimilates traditional TF,and transcends the later as well.

Abstract:This paper outlines a resource-based theory of the firm focusing on the physical reality of production, resources, and innovation. This approach differs from previous attempts to extend the resource-based view to explain the firm by identifying the drivers behind resource heterogenization, their role in and effect on the market process, and what the entrepreneurial gains from extending the divisions of labor and capital are. I find that adopting the perspective of economic productivity theory provides valuable insights into the workings of the market, the role of entrepreneurship, and the function of the firm.

Abstract:This paper integrates the theories and findings of micro-level organizational behaviour/human resource management research with the macrolevel resource-based view of the firm, specifically presenting a firm's human resources as an important potential source of sustained competitive advantage. Unlike practice-oriented discussions that assume the role of human resources as a source of sustained competitive advantage, we use the theoretical concepts from the resource-based view of the firm (Wernerfelt, 1984; Barney, 1991) to discuss how human resources meet the criteria for sustained competitive advantage in that they are valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable. The implications for developing human resources as a source of sustained competitive advantage are discussed, particularly examining the role of HR practices and managers in this process.

Abstract:Resources, the way they are defined in management, cover anything tangible or intangible. They are the most critical inputs for production in a firm when we consider it as a production unit. The Resource dependency theory (RDT) and the Resource based theory (RBV) were developed on the premise that resources which are valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable (VRIN) provide the path to competitive advantage when the dependencies on these were managed effectively. Firms are heterogeneous because they possess different bundles of such VRIN like resources. Of late there has been a realization that both RDT and RBV are Axiomatic in application and conceptual understanding but are extremely difficult to prove empirically. The reason for this has been that resources as defined are not linked to productive services as is necessary if a firm is to be viewed as a production unit. To elaborate further, this linkage must prove how the competitive advantage is achieved, sustained and how innovation impacts this ability to maintain such advantage. Incorporating answers to all these questions, we propose an integrated Resource based view of the firm. We take a Penrosian view and show how resources are treated as bundles of services. We show how technology interacts with strategy of a firm to generate alternate and more effective ways of delivering the same services or generate substitutes. We show that a productive service follows the same evolutionary path as technology with varying timelines between stages based on how new or substitute services emerge and get adopted. By proposing this integrated theory we hope to settle the age old and persisting problem of empirical assessment of any application of Resource based view including dependency. By doing so we hope that extension of these theories is facilitated.

Abstract:The resource‐based view (RBV) of the firm is a theory that has been explored in academic literature as a means of explaining competitive advantage and, in turn, superior performance amongst firms. In this paper it is argued that the model developed by Fahy offers a concise picture of the nature and role of key resources in strategic management but this picture needs further empirical development. A research approach based on a face‐to face interview is used to explore the process by which a high‐performing firm in the financial services industry in Australia identifies, develops, deploys and protects its key intangible assets and capabilities in sustaining competitive advantage.

Abstract:The resource‐based view is an enduring and impactful mainstay of research within strategic management and beyond. This editors' introduction to the special issue on "new directions for the resource‐based view" accomplishes two main tasks. First, we describe the contributions offered by the seven articles contained in the special issue. Second, we explain the potential value to research of incorporating into resource‐based inquiry new contexts (artificial intelligence and digitization, distributed organizations, and stakeholders and sustainability); new concepts (resource redeployment, market shaping through resources and capabilities); and new methods (text analysis and machine learning, formal models, policy capturing). The overall aim of this introduction is to help invigorate the resource‐based view by spotlighting a series of promising new directions.

Abstract:We describe the interplay between the resource-based view (RBV) and strategic human resources (HR)/human capital (HC) literatures in select areas of particular interest. In each area, we aim to highlight key issues, review relevant evidence where available, and identify future research needs. We begin by reviewing research on HR-related firm heterogeneity. We then discuss best practices in HR, including evidence of the large apparent value they create. We also consider different views on the value and ease of imitation of best practices, including implementation challenges. Next, we briefly address the key roles of microfoundations and complementarity in helping understand the potential for value creation and value capture through the use of best practices. We then ask whether the use of best practices in the pursuit of competitive parity might warrant greater attention as this may be where the largest potential gains can be made. Finally, we consider a number of developments in the strategic HC literature, especially those related to firm-specific human capital (FSHC). We raise questions with views on issues such as the consequences of FSHC for workers; the definition and measurement of FSHC; whether worker immobility, a key to value capture, is good from a social return (or even a firm) return perspective; and the relative emphasis on value capture and value creation.

Abstract:This article explains how viewing resource-based theory within Brandenburger and Stuart’s value creation framework adds clarity to the theory as a whole and to its essential elements including the definition of its dependent variables, its approach to value creation, and its approach to the appropriation of economic value. Building on this foundation, the article addresses several questions about resource-based theory: Is it a theory or a view? Is resource-based theory tautological? Is resource-based theory static? How important are stakeholders within resource-based theory? Does resource-based theory constitute a theory of the firm? Does resource-based theory acknowledge industry structure’s role in explaining firm performance? Does resource-based theory incorporate uncertainty? Does resource-based theory have strong managerial implications? In accomplishing these tasks, the article sets the stage for the further evolution and application of resource-based theory.

Abstract:We start this article with the exploration of similarities between the resource-based view of the firm (RBV) and stakeholder theory at the time of their origination and then proceed with the conversation on what led to distinct developmental trajectories of the two theories. Though RBV has become a leading paradigm in the strategic management field, we argue that in its current form, RBV is yet incomplete. We suggest there are four aspects that stakeholder theory can offer to inform RBV: normativity, sustainability, people, and cooperation. Reconciling stakeholder theory and RBV is a promising path to advancing our understanding of management, and we provide a two-part guideline to management scholars and practitioners who would be willing to take this path.

Abstract:We apply insights from organizational behavior, psychology, and sociology to make the case that the community in which a firm is embedded is a valuable, rare, inimitable, and nonsubstitutable resource that holds potential as a source of sustained competitive advantage. First, we review several key principles of the resource-based view (RBV) and show how they apply to community as a strategic resource, incorporating prior work that simultaneously addresses communities and RBV. Next, we juxtapose pairs of firms in the same industries, comparing those that have embraced this strategy with those that have not, demonstrating the superior sustainability of the firms that consider community as a strategic resource. Finally, we conclude with thoughts as to a future research agenda that allows for an expansion of the concept of resources to further the development of RBV, the firms that apply it, and the communities in which they are embedded. In doing so, we demonstrate how expanding RBV to incorporate the community as strategic resource contributes to managerial theory, research, and practice.

Abstract:Together, Penrosean and Barnean resource-based logic make up the dominant theoretical approach to understanding firm growth. While extant literature focuses on a common lineage between Penrosean theory and the resource-based view (RBV), we explicate divergence at these origins of resource-based theorizing and subject the growth implications of each to meta-analytic testing. RBV’s central tenets concern resources that meet valuable, rare, inimitable, and nonsubstitutable (VRIN) criteria, while Penrose’s theory discusses the versatility of resources. Theoretically, VRIN resources allow firms to exploit unique opportunities, while versatile resources allow firms to recombine resources in novel ways to create growth. Using meta-analytic techniques, we find that versatile resources are associated with higher levels of growth, whereas VRIN resources are not. We offer novel insights into alternative characteristics of resources derived from the same conceptualization of the firm, add greater specificity to the performance construct, and open up avenues for new theorizing on firm growth that is more closely aligned with Penrose’s theory.

Abstract:The nature of the firm's strategy is to pursue the firm's rent, which is the goal of the firm's sustainable competitive advantage. The traditional neoclassical economics and RBV studied the derivation of the firm's rent from one aspect. The former thinks rent stems from an imperfectly competitive market structure, and the latter thinks it is resource heterogeneity. This paper suggests that the core of "rent"(or SCA) of the enterprise stems not only from "heterogeneity resources" but also the "integration" of "heterogeneity resources" and other resources in the enterprise. Based on the study of integration mechanism by economics and management methods, this paper suggests the enterprise rent's differential under the integration and nonintegration condition.

Abstract:Competitive dynamics (CD) and the resource-based view (RBV) emerged simultaneously from the study of strategy more than three decades ago. The two subfields have advanced since then to occupy established positions in strategic management. Generally, CD is outward-focused and interested in a firm’s moves and countermoves in the marketplace. The RBV looks inward, examining a firm’s internal organizational capabilities, its tangible and intangible resources. They have mostly been investigated independently; with limited exceptions, researchers have yet put together the two pieces of internal capabilities and external competitive profile. Consequently, we have only a fragmented snapshot of the firm’s core strategic elements and behaviors. Here, we compare and contrast the two perspectives along a number of dimensions such as focus of attention and conception of competitive advantage. Based on this understanding, we explore the CD-RBV interface, specifically how central elements of these research streams may be considered jointly to expand our understanding of firm behaviors and outcomes. We highlight limitations and lapses in the literature and suggest directions for future researchers interested in developing new theories connecting the intellectual boundaries of these two important strategy subfields.

Abstract:Understanding sources of sustained competitive advantage has become a major area of research in strategic management. Building on the assumptions that strategic resources are heterogeneously distributed acrossfirms and that these differences are stable over time, this article examines the link betweenfirm resources and sustained competitive advantage. Four empirical indicators of the potential of firm resources to generate sustained competitive advantage-value, rareness, imitability, and substitutability-are discussed. The model is applied by analyzing the potential of severalfirm resourcesfor generating sustained competitive advantages. The article concludes by examining implications of this firm resource model of sustained competitive advantage for other business disciplines.
