Abstract:Background: Food literacy is capturing the attention worldwide and gaining traction in the Arab countries. Strengthening food and nutrition literacy among Arab teenagers are important promising empowering tools which can protect them from malnutrition. This study aims to assess the nutrition literacy status of adolescents with the food literacy of their parents in 10 Arab countries. Methods: This cross-sectional study involving a convenient sample of 5,401 adolescent-parent dyads (adolescents: mean age ± SD: 15.9 ± 3.0, females: 46.8%; parents: mean age ± SD: 45.0 ± 9.1, mothers: 67.8%) was launched between 29 April and 6 June 2022 in 10 Arab nations. The Adolescent Nutrition Literacy Scale (ANLS) and the Short Food Literacy Questionnaire (SFLQ) were used to meet the study aims. Results: More than one-quarter (28%) of adolescents had poor nutrition literacy, with 60% of their parents being food illiterate. The top three countries with nutritionally" less literate" adolescents were Qatar (44%), Lebanon (37.4%), and Saudi Arabia (34.9%). Adolescents' age, gender, education level, primary caregivers, employment status, and the inclusion of nutrition education in the schools' curriculum predicted the nutrition literacy levels of Arab adolescents. Besides, parental weight status, health status, parent's food literacy level, and the number of children per household were significant determinants too. Adolescents studying at a university and having parents with adequate food literacy had the highest odds of being nutritionally literate (OR = 4.5, CI = 1.8-11.5, p = 0.001, OR = 1.8, CI = 1.6-2.1, p < 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Nutrition literacy inadequacy among Arab adolescents is a prioritized challenge to be tackled.

Abstract:Iron deficiency is the most common type of malnutrition worldwide. This community-based study was conducted to assess the prevalence of anaemia in Minia, Assiut, and Sohag Governorates of Upper Egypt and to analyse the nature of the problem to help prioritize the control intervention strategy. the study was conducted on children aged 6 to 71 months. the two-stage cluster sampling method was used, and 2,700 pre-schoolers (900 in each Governorate) were enrolled. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, morbidity profile, dietary characteristics (breastfeeding and qualitative and quantitative food-consumption patterns), haemoglobin concentration by the cyanmethaemoglobin method, and urine and stool analysis (for every fifth child). the analysis, presentation, and interpretation of data followed the guidelines and indicators recommended by the World Health Organization/UNICEF. Anaemia was very highly prevalent among all pre-schoolers (69%). Minia Governorate showed the highest trend in prevalence of anaemia, followed by Sohag and then Assiut. the prevalence of anaemia was slightly higher in most rural sites and was higher among girls (70%) than boys (68%). the highest prevalence was seen in the second year of life. Severe anaemia was observed among 5.5% of pre-school children. Breastfeeding pattern, economic status, parasitic load, and the anaemia state of mothers were all significantly associated with the risk of anaemia. A set of strategic recommendations and implications for action was proposed.

Abstract:Introduction: Improving individuals' nutrition literacy can be one way to promote healthy dietary behaviors, which lowers the incidence of non-communicable diseases. In Saudi Arabia, there is a limited information regarding nutrition literacy among students. Therefore, the purposes of this study was to investigate university students' nutrition literacy and identify its predictors in Saudi Arabia. Another objective was to assess how nutrition literacy is associated with eating habits among this sample. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among students attending the University of Jeddah and King Abdulaziz University (Jeddah City) in Saudi Arabia from June 2023 to September 2023. Using a convenience sampling approach, 570 students were enrolled in this study. An online-based structured survey tool including demographic details, a food frequency questionnaire, and a nutrition literacy scale was used to collect the data. Descriptive and multiple binary logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: Approximately 40.4% of the participants exhibited poor nutrition literacy. Female students were less likely than male students to have poor nutrition literacy (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 0.62; 95% confidence interval, CI = 0.42, 0.92). Underweight (AOR = 1.73; 95%CI = 1.22, 4.56) and overweight participants (AOR = 3.1; 95%CI = 2.77, 7.23) were at higher risk of having poor level of nutrition literacy as compared to those who had normal weight. Students who did not take any nutrition-related courses had a 1.3 times higher probability of having a poor level of nutrition literacy compared to their counterparts (AOR = 1.3; 95%CI = 1.05, 3.74). Moreover, poor nutrition literacy was associated with higher weekly consumption frequencies of red meat, processed foods, funk foods and sugar-sweetened beverages. Conclusion: A higher percentage of university students had poor nutrition literacy, which was associated with gender, self-reported BMI status, nutrition-related courses and unhealthy eating habits. These findings can assist university administrators and policymakers in implementing effective measures to enhance students' nutrition literacy rates in Saudi Arabia.
Development of Nutrition Literacy Scale for Middle School Students in Chongqing, China: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background Information on nutrition literacy of middle schoolers is limited and tools for measuring nutrition literacy of middle schoolers are inadequate. Nutrition literacy has a positive effect on health. Improving children's nutrition literacy can help them to master the necessary nutritional knowledge, develop a healthy lifestyle, and learn to supplement nutrition according to their own needs for healthy growth. Objectives To develop the Chongqing Middle school student Nutrition Literacy Scale (CM-NLS). Methods Three experiments were conducted. A theoretical framework and an initial item pool of CM-NLS were established based on the literature review. And the two-round Delphi method was used to explore the suitable acceptance indicators and items. Item evaluation and reduction were performed using the classical test theory. Then, the items in the final CM-NLS were tested for their validity and reliability amongst 462 middle school students. The construct validity was assessed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The internal consistency reliability and split-half reliability were evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficients. Results The final CM-NLS consisting of 52 items that were based on three primary items (functional, interactive and critical) and six sub-items (obtain, understand, apply, interact, medial literacy and critical skill) was developed and validated. EFA suggested six factors explaining 69.44% of the total variance (Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin test = 0.916, Bartlett's test χ2 = 5,854.037, P < 0.001). CFA showed that the model fit the data adequately, with χ2/df = 1.911, root mean square error of approximation = 0.063, goodness-of-fit index = 0.822 and adjusted goodness of fit index = 0.790. The total CM-NLS Cronbach's alpha values of internal consistency and split-half reliability were 0.849 and 0.521, respectively, with reasonable reliability. Conclusions CM-NLS is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing nutrition literacy among middle school students in Chongqing. Specifically, it could be used by practitioners for needs assessment before the implementation of a nutrition education program.

Abstract:Relations between nutrition, cognition, and adaptive behaviour measures were assessed for 110 Egyptian pre-adolescents (47% male), ranging in age from 7 to 10 years. Using a combination of oral recall and weighing of food portions, the level of dietary intake was obtained for 19 specific nutrients, including measures of energy (kilocalories), macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates), and micronutrients (vitamins, trace minerals). Children were tested on six subscales from the Egyptian version of the WISC-R plus the Raven's coloured matrices. Based on repeated naturalistic observations we also obtained measures of the children's behaviour in the school classroom, social interactions with peers and adults, activity level, and affect. Teacher ratings of the children's classroom behaviour were also obtained. The results indicated that specific nutritional indices were significantly related to male classroom behaviour and activity level, and to female verbal ability and classroom involvement. Although a diverse group of nutrients predicted developmental outcomes, common to many of these nutrients was the fact that they were derived from intake of animal source foods. The results further indicated that relations between nutrition and children's cognition and behaviour were mediated by contextual factors, such as social class and cultural expectations about the appropriateness of given behaviours.

What is the level of nutrition literacy of Saudi adolescents? A national wide exploratory cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Despite being a prolific research topic, studies evaluating nutrition literacy in the Arab world are scant and still nonexistent in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Therefore, a national study was launched with the aim to (1) assess nutrition literacy among Saudi adolescents aged 10-19 years old and (2) determine its correlates. Methods: A cross-sectional study was launched across all Saudi provinces between 29 April and 6 June 2022, enrolling a convenience sample of 2115 adolescents (mean age= 16.8 ± 2.5; girls: 48.7%). An online self-administered questionnaire was disseminated to eligible participants to collect relevant data. Results: Study findings showed that nearly half of the adolescents (44.6%) had poor nutrition literacy. The male gender doubled the risk of adolescents having poor nutrition literacy (OR=2.0, CI=1.5-2.5, p<0.001). Northern border residents were 14 times more likely to be nutritionally illiterate, in contrast to adolescents residing in Riyadh (OR=14.0, CI=7.3-28.0, p<0.001). Adolescents were more likely to be nutritionally illiterate if they were underweight or overweight (OR=2.7, CI=1.6-4.7, p<0.001; OR=2.2, CI=1.7-2.9, p<0.001). School students had 2 times more risk of having poor nutrition literacy, in contrast to those who were enrolled in universities (OR=1.8, CI=1.4-2.4, p<0.001). Nutrition illiteracy was 4 times higher among adolescents having caregivers else than their parents (OR=3.9, CI=2.2-6.9, p<0.001). Parental education level also contributed to determining adolescents' nutrition literacy status. Conclusions: It has become essential to courage the development of supportive school environments in Saudi Arabia to promote nutrition education and improve adolescents' nutrition literacy. Without a doubt, this calls for taking a holistic approach on the part of education and health ministries, nutrition professionals, educators, parents, and, most importantly, the teenagers themselves, who must have the desire and motivation to learn.

Abstract:Background: Foodborne diseases are a growing public health problem. The study of foodsafety knowledge and practice among university students is crucial as they are usuallyinvolved in food preparation for themselves and they are also the future food handlers forother household members. Objective: To estimate the knowledge, attitude and self-reportedpractice of food safety among medical students and to identify the relation of food safetyknowledge on attitude and practice. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted at theFaculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University using a validated, anonymous self-administratedquestionnaire that included several sections; sociodemographic data, food safety knowledge,attitude and questions related to food safety practice. Results: The questionnaire wascompleted by 244 medical students from the six faculty grades, 47% were males and 52.9%females, mean age in years ± SD was 21.9± 1.7. An insufficient level of food safetyknowledge was found among students. Correct answers for the six food safety knowledgequestions were selected by less than 50% of studied students. By gender, females hadsignificantly higher food safety knowledge, attitude and practice mean scores (t= -3.01p=0.003- t= -2.5 p=0.013 - t= -3.03p=0.003) respectively. Knowledge score correlation withattitude and practice scores showed no statistical significance (r=0.04 p=0.45 and r=0.11p=0.07) respectively. Students with more positive food safety attitude reported safer foodpractices (r=0.28 p<0.001). Conclusion: The insufficient level of food safety knowledge inthis study highlighted the need to develop continued education on food safety targetinguniversity students.

Abstract:Abstract Background Eating behavior is an essential aspect of life that can have long-term effects on health outcomes. Nutrition literacy is crucial for better health and well-being. It empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their nutrition and take control of their eating habits. Objectives This study aimed to assess the relationship between nutritional literacy and eating behavior among nursing students at the nursing faculties of Ardabil University of medical sciences. Methods A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted in Ardabil province, northwest Iran. The study collected data through simple random sampling at nursing schools in Ardabil province, with 224 nursing students participating. The study collected data from a demographic information form, the nutritional literacy self-assessment questionnaire for students (NL-SF12), and the adult eating behavior questionnaire (AEBQ). The data were analyzed using SPSS version 14.0 software. Results Based on the results, nutritional literacy explains 44% of the variance in eating behavior and shows significant explanatory power in two sub-scales of eating behavior. The adjusted R 2 values for food approach and food avoidance scales were 0.33 and 0.27, respectively. Conclusion Given the significant relationship between nutritional literacy and eating behaviors among nursing students, nursing faculty managers and health policymakers should develop new public health strategies to increase nutritional literacy among nursing students.

School-Based Nutrition Programs in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Systematic Review

Abstract:This systematic review aims at documenting government-led school nutrition programs/interventions in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). A systematic review of the available literature on this topic was conducted between 25 October 2022 and 15 November 2022 using 15 electronic databases as well as grey literature. The search was limited to materials published post 2000 in English, Arabic, or French. Articles/Reports were included in the review if they provided information on school-based nutrition programs/interventions developed, adopted or implemented by a governmental entity in the EMR countries, irrespective of study design. In total, 158 documents were retained until 16 May 2023. School-based programs/interventions were categorized into 13 types. In total, 298 school-based nutrition programs/interventions were identified. The most common were school meals and school feeding programs (all EMR countries) followed by nutrition education within the curriculum (77% of countries), extracurricular nutrition education (64%), standards for school canteens or foods/beverages available in schools (64%), and training of school staff (59%). Approximately half reported the inclusion of fruit and vegetable schemes (54%) or the establishment of hygienic cooking facilities (50%), while less than half reported standards for the marketing of food/beverages (45%), bans/standards for vending machines, milk feeding schemes, or micronutrient supplementation programs (41%). The least common interventions were school gardens (32%) and take-home rations (14%). Countries with the lowest gross domestic product and lowest government effectiveness score had the lowest number of programs/interventions. Many of the programs have tackled both school-aged children as well as preschoolers. We were able to identify monitoring and process evaluation for 21 programs in 14 countries. Few programs have undergone impact assessment.

Abstract:Background: High prevalence of inappropriate antibiotic use in different sectors of the community indicates a possible strong influence of social and cultural context, which may be influenced by social determinants of health and thereby affecting individuals' health-related behavior, including antibiotic use. And such health-related behavior is largely determined by individuals' health literacy. Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between the Egyptian population's health literacy, antibiotic use, and antibiotic knowledge. Method: In Egypt, researchers used a cross-sectional study design, between the period of January and March 2024 using validated questionnaires and recruited a convenient sample of adults from seven governorates representing different geographic areas, and socioeconomic and educational backgrounds with the help of the validated questionnaires the HLS-EU-Q16, a shortened version of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (derived from the World Health Organization's Antibiotic Resistance: Multi-Country Public Awareness Survey) and, familiarity with drugs and understanding of antibiotic resistance via online methods and face-to-face interviews. Results: The survey included a participation of 500 persons in total. The participants' age distribution indicated that 28.8% (n = 144) were aged 18-24, while 27.4% (n = 137) were within the 25-34 age group. Moreover, a total of 274 participants, accounting for 54.8% of the sample, described themselves as female. Significantly, 60.7% of the patients indicated acquiring antibiotics without a prescription. The evaluation of health literacy (HL) levels among the participants revealed that 36.2% had problematic HL, while 8.4% showed inadequate HL. A strong positive link was found between the scores of antibiotic knowledge and the scores of HL (R = 0.876; P-value = 0.001). Conclusion: Overall, it is imperative to implement awareness-raising curricula and public health education initiatives without delay. Furthermore, it is highly advised to implement public health awareness initiatives about the appropriate use of antibiotics, alongside national policies aimed at regulating the availability and prescription of antibiotics.

Abstract:Eating habits are critical determinants of health, influencing growth, development, and the risk of chronic diseases in children. [ 1–3 ] Childhood is a crucial period for the development of lifelong eating habits. [ 4 ] Childhood eating habits can have significant and lasting consequences on physical, emotional, and social development. [ 5 ] Healthy eating habits reduce the risk of obesity [ 6 ] and chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers, [ 7 ] improve nutritional status, growth and development, [ 8 ] enhance cognitive function, promote better mood and emotional stability, [ 9 ] and improve academic performance and social interactions, [ 10 ] all of these can ultimately enhance future educational and economic opportunities. Thus, understanding the factors that shape children's eating habits is essential for promoting better health outcomes.

Abstract:Objective: Food environments are a major determinant of children's nutritional status. Scarce evidence on food environments exists in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study aims to fill this gap by documenting the obesogenicity of food environments around schools in Greater Tunis, Tunisia – an LMIC of the Middle East and North Africa region with an ongoing nutrition transition and increasing rates of childhood obesity. Design: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed built food environments around 50 primary schools. Ground-truthing was performed to collect geographic coordinates and pictures of food retailers and food advertisement-sets within an 800-meter road-network buffer of each school. Retailers and advertisement-sets were categorized as healthy or unhealthy according to a NOVA-based classification. Associations between school characteristics and retailers or advertisement-sets were explored using multinomial regression models. Setting: Greater Tunis, Tunisia. Participants: Random sample of 50 (35 private and 15 public) primary schools. Results: Overall, 3,621 food retailers and 2,098 advertisement-sets were mapped. About two thirds of retailers and advertisement-sets were labeled as unhealthy. Most retailers were traditional corner stores (22%) and only 6% were fruit and vegetable markets. The prevailing food group promoted was carbonated and sugar-sweetened beverages (22%). The proportion of unhealthy retailers was significantly higher in the richest vs. poorest areas. Conclusions: School neighborhood food environments included predominantly unhealthy retailers and advertisements. Mapping of LMIC food environments is crucial to document the impact of the nutrition transition on children's nutritional status. This will inform policies and interventions to curb the emergent childhood obesity epidemic.

Abstract:Abstract Background Good maternal nutrition during pregnancy is important to ensure health for the mother and the fetus. This study aimed to establish optimal health of Egyptian mothers and their babies through proper nutrition, by assessing nutritional knowledge and behavior among a group of Egyptian pregnant women in addition to identifying the factors influencing their nutritional knowledge and behavior. Methods This descriptive cross sectional study included 300 pregnant women attending the antenatal care clinics in 6th of October University private hospital and EL-Hussary primary health care unit. The data was collected through a modified nutritional survey that was translated from Spanish to Arabic and revised by language experts for clarity. Results Almost all of the women attending the private hospital were university educated while about half of the women attending the PHC unit were graduated from technical education (skills diploma). In general, the level of knowledge about food requirements of both groups was satisfactory good; however, neither of them fulfilled the WHO recommendations of food intake during pregnancy or the optimum number of meals per day. The mean of random blood glucose was higher among the women attending the PHC unit; the BMI, mid arm circumference and subcutaneous fat were higher among the same group as well. In regard to fulfilling the WHO recommended servings per day, only starch and fat items were fulfilled by both groups, whereas the other three items (vegetables, fruits and dairy products) were merely included in the diets of both groups. Conclusion Women with higher education showed an active lifestyle with a lower BMI but showed no relation to the choice of a good and healthy diet. These findings could give an insight to the policy makers in order to update nutritional care programs for pregnant women addressing all aspects of sociodemographic differences among women.
Determining the level of food safety awareness by nutritional literacy in health sciences faculty students

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of the research is to determine the nutrition literacy level and food safety awareness level of students who studied at faculty of health sciences. This descriptive study also demonstrates university students’ nutrition literacy statuses, food safety attitudes, nutritional statuses, and food preferences. Methods: The research was conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional survey study in order to determine the nutrition literacy level and food safety awareness level of the students. Two hundred and eight individuals, including 174 women and 34 men, participated in the study. The data were obtained from face-to-face and online interviews then they were analyzed in a software. The survey is consisted of three parts: socio-demographic form, Evaluation Instrument of Nutrition Literacy on Adults and the Food Safety Attitude scale. Results: In this study, the majority of the participants studied in the department of nutrition and dietetics (55.29%) and audiology (26.92%), followed by health management (7.21%), physiology and rehabilitation (5.77%), nursing (4.33%) and social work (0.48%) department. The relationship between nutrition literacy and food safety among the students of the faculty of health sciences was significant (p < 0.01). Conclusions: This study showed that the nutrition literacy level was sufficient and the food safety attitude was positive in university students. However, it is needed to prospective studies to understand the importance of nutrition literacy and food safety awareness.
Health literacy strengths and limitations among rural fishing communities in Egypt using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ)

Abstract:Introduction: Health literacy is an important determinant of health. The aim of this study was to use a multi-dimensional measurement tool to describe the health literacy of people living in a fishing community in northern Egypt. Methods and analysis: Data were collected from 436 people (fisherman and their families), using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ), which includes 9 scales. Effect sizes (ES) for standardized mean differences estimated the magnitude of difference between demographic groups. Results: The mean age of participants was 42 years, 50% were male, 42% were working in the fishing sector, 17.9% had access to the Internet and 36.8% were illiterate. Male participants showed higher capabilities in scales 3. Actively managing my health and 4. Social support for health (ES = 0.21 and 0.27, respectively). In comparison to other occupations, fishing occupation had a negative impact on scale 7. Navigating the healthcare system (ES -0.23). Also, higher educational level was associated with higher HLQ indicators. Across all scales, scale 2. Having sufficient information to manage my health showed the lowest mean (SD) score; 2.23 (0.76) indicating that most people reported they didn't have enough information. Conclusions: This study has revealed that fishermen and their families have a wide range of health literacy difficulties which are likely to have profound negative effects on health behavior and health outcomes.
Knowledge, attitude and practice of community pharmacists towards nutrition counseling

Abstract:Background The World Health Organization considers health promotion a top health service priority. Nutrition, weight management and physical activity are necessary health promotion strategies to improve overall quality of life and decrease the personal and societal consequences or poor health. Community pharmacists are in the best position to implement health promotion strategies due to their excellent accessibility and the lack of a requirement to make an appointment to interact with them. Enabling people to change their lifestyle and control their health through nutrition education and counseling is a great opportunity for community pharmacists to promote health. Nutrition counseling as a part of clinical nutrition therapy aims to provide dietary advice and to assist the selection of appropriate over-the-counter supplements. Objective To investigate the community pharmacist role in nutrition counseling and identify the barriers and strategies to improve nutrition counseling in Egypt. Setting Community pharmacies in Egypt. Methods A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with a knowledge, attitude, and practice survey. A specially developed and validated questionnaire was used to collect data via face-to-face structured interviews. Primary outcomes Pharmacists' knowledge about, attitudes towards and practice of nutrition counseling. Results A total of 368 community pharmacists participated in this study, with a response rate of 73.6%. A total of 255 (69.3%) of the participants considered medical nutrition therapy a part of a pharmacist's duties. Only 146 (39.7%) of the participants believed that dietary supplements positively impact public health. According to 321 (87.2%) of the participants, the lack of pharmacists' expertise in nutrition counseling was the main barrier to nutrition counseling. Conclusions The majority of the participating community pharmacists had positive attitudes towards their role in nutritional assessment and medical nutrition therapy. There is a need to improve the nutritional knowledge of community pharmacists in Egypt. The current practice of community pharmacists in nutrition counseling is limited to adults. Obesity, diabetes and hypertension were the main medical conditions of the patients who received nutrition counseling from the community pharmacists. Inadequate knowledge in nutrition and the unavailability of educational materials were the main barriers to nutrition counseling.

Abstract:Obesity is a major threat to children's health today. The prevalence of obesity has been steadily increasing; over the past 25 years, the number of obese children has nearly tripled and is more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as type 2 diabetes high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Research objectives were to study the current prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents in Egypt from 2000 to 2008, to estimate the prevalence of glucose disorders, hypertension, lipid profile, and metabolic syndrome, and to investigate some related risk factors among 10 to 18 years old school adolescents. For assessing prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among adolescents, data from reports of other cross-sectional studies carried out by National Nutrition Institute (NNI) (2000 to 2005) and Egypt Demographic and Health Survey (2008) were compared. To estimate the prevalence of glucose disorders, hypertension, lipid profile, and metabolic syndrome, a randomized stratified cluster-sample of preparatory and secondary school students was used. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated and referred to corresponding international reference values for age and sex. A fasting blood sample was drawn to assess lipid profile and fasting plasma insulin. Overweight and obesity are prevalent among Egyptian adolescents of both sexes, and at least, for girls, the prevalence has increased in the last few years. Pre-diabetic state was present among 16.4% of adolescents. The crude prevalence of hypertension is 1.4%. The overall proportion of adolescents with high total cholesterol is 6.0%; the proportion with high lower density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol is 7.5%, with high triglycerides of 8.2%, and low higher density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol of 9.4%. We conclude that overweight and obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension and cardiovascular risk factors in young are serious in terms of morbidity and mortality, suggesting that they are an appropriate target for screening. Abstract:Global Health Promotion, Ahead of Print. The university setting is an ideal setting to implement nutrition education interventions. Because the transition to college life often overlaps with young adults' increase in independence in food choice and nutrition related behavior, this is an optimal time to target this population and several models exist to best utilize the college setting to support nutrition education interventions. This review aimed to examine the effectiveness of nutrition interventions in university student populations across the League of Arab States. A scoping review following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines was conducted across 14 databases for relevant publications published through May 2023 to find studies conducted across Arab countries. Quality assessment was conducted using the Effective Public Health Practice Project tool. Seven primary studies were included in this review. Although the interventions and outcome measures were disparate, there were positive impacts of the interventions, including improved nutrition knowledge and nutrition habits, knowledge of nutrient sources, and knowledge about the relationship between diet and disease. Recommendations to maximize the efficacy of nutrition interventions conducted across the League of Arab States include purposeful design of the intervention based on a theoretical framework, the use of a control group in the research design, and follow-up measures to examine post-intervention effects. Consideration should also be given to intervention duration and availability in college-students' schedules. Adaptation of intervention materials, measures and delivery methodologies should emphasize local foods, food culture and dietary practices.

Nutrition Literacy of Middle School Students and Its Influencing Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study in Chongqing, China

Abstract:Nutrition literacy plays an important role in children's dietary habits and nutrition. This study aimed to analyse the status of nutrition literacy and its influencing factors amongst middle school students in Chongqing, China. “Nutrition literacy scale for middle school students in Chongqing” was used in 29 districts of Chongqing in September 2020. The scores of nutrition literacy and its' three sub-domains (functional, interactive and critical nutrition literacy) were divided into low and high groups based on their median scores. Binary logistic regression was used to measure the influencing factors of nutrition literacy. A total of 18,660 middle school students were included in this study. The median of nutrition literacy of middle school students was 61.68 (IQR = 14.37). Interactive nutrition literacy had the highest score (median = 70.00, IQR = 20.00), followed by functional nutrition literacy (median = 68.69, IQR = 14.14) and critical nutrition literacy (median = 45.83, IQR = 25.00). Students who were the minority (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.637–0.785), in senior high school (OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.477–0.548), in rural areas (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.790–0.911), receiving school meal support from the government (OR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.591–0.664), with other caregivers' parenting (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.805–0.914), with parents having a low level of education and with an abnormal BMI [thin (OR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.837–0.990), overweight (OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.785–0.968), and obese (OR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.767–0.902)] presented less probability of being a high level of nutrition literacy. Our results could assist public health authorities in developing strategies of nutrition literacy promotion for references and theoretical foundations.
