Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) received great attention in various fields, because of their high efficacy, high aspect ratio, low density, renewability and non-toxicity which make them ideal candidates. Here, various properties and applications especially, thermal, mechanical, adhesives, coatings etc., to introduce CNCs, a hydrophilic and colloidally stable, rigid rod-shaped bio-based nanomaterial with high strength and high surface area. CNCs enhance properties of different compounds under different conditions. The research in the last decade reveals that couple of years CNCs possesses high nature, than any other kind of compound, widely used in industrial and other products, as well as for human benefits. Over the past decade, CNCs is an abundant natural nanomaterial with great potential, has attracted many researches towards its use. Dispersing in polar solvent, they assemble to form multiphase or higher order structures yielding desirable optical and structural properties. The present review summarizes the recent achievements in the development of CNCs templating, highlights considerable progress has been achieved in addressing these multidimensional properties and potential use of CNCs in a wide range of high-tech applications in different fields.

Abstract:As an eco-friendly sustainable iridescent coating, cholesteric cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is susceptible to substrate effects or shearing effects. In this work, interface interaction and liquid crystal phase transition were evaluated for fabricating iridescent cast or shear coatings of CNCs onto substrates of polystyrene, glass, ceramic, wood, stainless steel, metal, or metal alloy. Three types of substrate effects and four categories of shearing effects on the structure color mechanism of CNC coatings were proposed. Practically, several efficient approaches, such as increasing colloidal concentration, enhancing water-retention of substrates, raising processing temperature, slowing down shearing speed, or doping functional additives were involved. Hence, a feasible strategy was provided for preparing sustainable, iridescent, stable, and industrially scalable coatings of CNCs.

Abstract:The cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) surface modified with phenolic and acrylic resins were investigated for different properties such as thermally stability and adhesive property, the mechanical properties of CNCs and interactions of the resulting materials at a micro-level are very important. Phenolic resins are of great interest due to their smooth structure, low thermal conductivity and good thermal insulation. However, the high spray rates and poor mechanical properties limit its use for external insulation of buildings. Acrylic resins are used as a matrix resin for adhesives and composites due to their adhesion, mechanical properties, and their good chemical resistance. The brittleness of acrylic resins makes them less attractive than the structural materials, being much harder. For this reason, most of the resins are modified with suitable elastomers, which act as hardeners. Therefore, treatment of these compounds is necessary. In this research paper, the effect of CNCs surface on phenolic and acrylic resins were investigated to obtain an optimized surface using three different weight (wt%) ratios of CNCs. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-rays diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the structure, and investigate different properties of CNCs. Furthermore, the Zwick/Roell Z020 model was used to investigate the adhesion properties of the phenolic and acrylic resins with CNCs.

Abstract:Bioinspired coloration of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) has advanced a new era of wide applications for decoration, sensing, and anti-counterfeiting. However, the solid structural color films suffer from strong angle-dependent iridescence and a limited color range due to the spatial arrangement caused by kinetic arrest during evaporation-induced self-assembly of CNCs. Here, a ternary co-assembly approach is demonstrated to prepare CNC films with weak/non-angular optical response and wide-range colors. Structural coloration is enabled by the long-range and short-range ordered photonic structure of CNCs. A cationic polymer, poly(dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride), is introduced to influence the CNC self-assembly through electrostatic attraction, inducing the structural transition to the long-range disordered/short-range ordered structure as well as presenting the gradual change from iridescent structural colors to non-iridescent colors. Additionally, a hydrophilic small compound, glycerol, is used to adjust the helical pitch of nanostructured CNC arrays, offering the broad-range coloration. The CNC-based composite material is further used as an optical coating for anti-counterfeiting and realizing color patterning and angle-dependent selective color changes.

Abstract:We have studied the advances made in chemical modification of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and their corresponding applications. Different synthetic methods such as esterification and etherification, cross-linking and grafting techniques parameters, etc., are used in CNCs formation. As CNCs are well studied for their renewable purposes like oxidation, grafting, copolymerization reaction, etc. Their biodegradability is of great advantage as it can easily be modified with other related functional groups giving high stiffness, strength, low density and long life to metals and other materials. Cellulose polymer is mostly used due to its neutrality and its wide applications in furniture, packaging, textile, food medical products, etc. Mankind has found a great deal of benefit from cellulose owing to its many applications over a period of hundreds of years. This review presents a detailed account of pronounced effect of CNCs, revealed during their numerous applications and their potential use in wide ranging fields. The recent research reveals multidimensional properties and great advancements of CNCs made at an industrial level. CNCs also exhibit high efficiency in all application areas, described in detail here.

Abstract:Cholesteric cellulose films exhibiting an adjustable reflection wavelength across the entire visible range were obtained through the application of ultrasound treatment to a suspension of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) prior to casting. The influence of both low and high intensity ultrasound power on the structural color of iridescent films was systematically investigated, along with an elucidation of the mechanism behind helical pitch regulation. The findings reveal that low ultrasonic power applied to the CNC suspension has minimal impact on the structural color of the CNC film, primarily enhancing the dispersion of CNC. On the other hand, high ultrasonic power applied to the CNC suspension can effectively adjust the structural color thanks to not only improving the dispersion of CNCs suspensions, but also altering the morphology and size of the CNCs. More importantly, co-friendly cellulosic photonic pigments with tunable structural color can be easily obtained utilizing the fragility of iridescent films for applications such as anti-counterfeiting labels, nail modification and decorative coatings and so on, thereby demonstrating considerable potential for practical utilization.

Abstract:Films of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with chiral nematic organization can show vivid iridescence that arises from their hierarchical structure. Unfortunately, the brit-tleness of the films limits their potential applications. In this paper, we investigate the incorporation of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) into CNC films to prepare organ-ic-inorganic composite films with enhanced mechanical properties, while preserving the chiral nematic structure and brilliant iridescence. The hybrid composite films con-taining 10 wt. % HNTs are more elastic than pristine CNC films, with a 1.3-fold in-crease in tensile strength and a 1.6-fold increase in maximum strain. As well, the in-corporation of HNTs slightly improves the thermal stability of the composite films. These materials mimic the hybrid composite structures of crab shells, leading to en-hanced mechanical properties and thermal stability of CNC films while maintaining iridescence.

Abstract:Due to their unique chiral nematic structure and special optical property, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have drawn enormous attention. However, the inherent brittleness and rigidity limit their application in coatings or free-standing films. In this work, we designed and fabricated a novel iridescent coating with multiple-stimuli-responsive coloration through photochemical cross-linking with CNCs, poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), and erythritol. The as-prepared coatings exhibited improved mechanical strength because of the introduction of covalent organic frameworks and the internal hydrogen-bonding interaction of CNCs, cross-linked PEGDA networks, and erythritol that provided efficient energy dissipation. Interestingly, the CNC coating was able to distinguish similar organic liquids, including the skeletal isomers (1-propanol/2-propanol), halogenated hydrocarbons (chloroform/dichloromethane), and homologous compounds (methanol/ethanol), quickly by the change in surface color when immersed in various organic solvents. In addition, the CNC coating exhibited reversible humidity sensitivity with wide color changes from cyan to yellow-green, salmon pink, red, and colorless under 30–98% air relative humidity (RH). Based on the reversible discoloration of CNC coating, the anti-counterfeiting performance on CNC coating was presented, and the handwriting of saline solution appeared reversibly when stimulated with ethanol. Thus, the reversible allochroic CNC-based coating platform with multiple-stimuli-responsiveness has the potential to be developed as solvent sensors, test papers, and encryption tools.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a green resource which can produce photonic crystal films with structural colors in evaporation-induced self-assembly; CNC photonic crystal films present unique structural colors that cannot be matched by other colored materials. Recently, the mechanisms of CNC photonic crystal films with a unique liquid crystal structure were investigated to obtain homogenous, stable, and even flexible films at a large scale. To clarify the mechanism of colorful CNC photonic crystal films, we briefly summarize the recent advances from the correlations among the preparation methods, microstructures, and color properties. We first discuss the preparation process of CNCs, aiming to realize the green application of resources. Then, the behavior of CNCs in the formation of liquid crystal phases is studied, considering the influence of the CNCs' size and shape, surface properties, and the types and concentrations of solvents. Finally, the film formation process of CNCs and the control of structural colors during the film formation are summarized, as well as the mechanisms of CNC photonic crystal films with full color. In summary, considering the above factors, obtaining reliable commercial CNC photonic crystal films requires a comprehensive consideration of the subsequent preparation processes starting from the preparation of CNCs.

Abstract:Utilizing the well‐established ultrasound assisted method, CNC/BG composite films with uniform and structural color were successfully prepared, 1,3‐butylene glycol was found to incorporate into CNCs likely through hydrogen bonds, wrapping on the surface of CNCs. Moreover, the structural colors of the composite films achieve a fast and reversible humidity response from 35% to 80% at 25°C. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) can self‐assemble in an aqueous solution to form a chiral nematic liquid crystal structure, which is maintained in the subsequent solid iridescent film and presents a unique structural color. In this study, in order to explore the effect of ultrasound on the optical properties of CNC, CNC films with a chiral nematic helix structure and different structural colors were prepared by ultrasonic‐assisted dispersion and natural static evaporation. Results showed that prolonging the ultrasonic duration significantly increased layer pitches and red‐shifted the color of CNC films, likely due to increased steric hindrance and a larger electric double layer. On this basis, CNC/1,3‐butylene glycol (BG) composite films were prepared with uniform and structural color. Results showed that BG was incorporated into CNCs most likely through hydrogen bonds. Moreover, the presence of BG increased the layer pitches and red‐shifted the structural color of CNC/BG composite films, which indicates that structural color of the film has a good stability response to humidity. On the whole, our work provides a new point of view in understanding the role of ultrasound and small‐molecule additives in the preparation of CNC‐based films.

Abstract:Alignment of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in the aqueous phase have been studied in depth. However, there are few reports on the orientation control of CNCs as rod-like nano fillers in epoxy resins. In this research, the rheological behavior of CNCs/epoxy resin system before curing indicating that CNCs in which can be oriented through shear-induced orientation. Based on this point, shear-oriented CNCs reinforced resin composite films were successfully prepared, mechanical properties, optical properties and thermal stability of which were systematically investigated. Firstly, mechanical properties of composite films can be significantly improved by introducing oriented CNCs at all CNC content. And the aspect ratio of oriented CNCs also has an obvious impact on their enhancement effect. Secondly, although their transmittance decreases with the increase of CNC content, it is possible to obtain composite films with a transmittance close to that of pure epoxy resin film by adjusting the preparation process of CNCs. Finally, the thermal stability of oriented CNCs reinforced epoxy resin composite films at low CNC content is improved, but then decreases with the increase of CNC content. The successful preparation of oriented CNCs reinforced epoxy resin composite films with better mechanical and thermal properties while maintaining transparency will be conducive to expanding the applications of epoxy resins reinforced with rod like micro/nano fillers.

Abstract:Constructing and mimicking bioinspired structural color from bio-based materials has aroused tremendous attention. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), a typical nanomaterial made from lignocellulosic biomass, have been explored for the preparation of photonic materials. Structural color can be controllably achieved via incorporating different types of substances into CNC, which not only improves its mechanical properties but also adds new multifunctional properties. Herein, we provide a systematic of the following topics: 1) preparation of chiral cellulose nanocrystals, the iridescent mechanism of chiral CNC film, and the fundamentals of CNC suspensions on structural color formation; 2) construction of CNC-based composites with structural color by incorporating effective materials; and 3) potential applications of CNC-based composites in environment, advanced encryption, biomedicine, soft actuators, and energy storage. While numerous reviews on CNCs have appeared in the literature, there is still a lack of a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art on the preparation, iridescent mechanism, and applications of CNC-based composites, especially with regard to some advanced applications such as actuators and energy storage. To the best of our knowledge, this review represents a comprehensive and systematic description of the advances in bioinspired and multifunctional biomaterials from chiral CNC, and is believed to provide sufficient reference value for related aspects and promote the application of novel CNC-based composites in emerging areas.

Abstract:Co-assembly of metal ion and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is a promising strategy to fabricate novel iridescent CNC materials with advanced applications. By combining ultrasonication pretreatment and vacuum-assisted self-assembly (VASA) technique, a facile and rapid strategy is proposed to prepare the Mn2+-doped carboxylated CNC (C-CNC) iridescent films with multifunctional application. The ultrasonication pretreatment temporarily disassembles the aggregates of C-CNC nanorods caused by the electrostatic interaction between negative charged C-CNC and Mn2+. The subsequent VASA process accelerates the self-assembly of chiral liquid crystals prior to the re-agglomeration of C-CNC by the bridge effect of Mn2+. Furthermore, the as-prepared Mn2+/CNC film exhibits a rapid and visible color change in ammonia atmosphere along with the formation of MnO2. The reversible change can be realized by the stimulation of reducing agent. The derived MnO2/C-CNC composite film displays efficient removal of methylene blue dye in aqueous solution by both of adsorption and degradation procedure.

Chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystals and gluconic acid iridescent films with high flexibility and humidity response

Abstract:Two novel chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) composite films composed of CNCs, gluconic acid (GA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone or polyacrylamide (CNC-GA-PVP and CNC-GA-PAM) were fabricated mainly by evaporation-induced self-assembly process. The visible iridescent color and chiral nematic structure of the obtained CNC-based films could be readily regulated by altering the content of GA in a wide color range. Both CNC composite films possessed good tensile strength. Worthy to be mentioned, the CNC-GA-PAM films exhibited rather high flexibility (elongation reached 222.53%) and could be curled into any shape, indicating the effective contribution of the polymer cross-linked networks from the non-ionic PAM. The reversible humidity responses were also observed for both CNC films with good sensitivity, probably due to the high hygroscopicity of GA. In addition, the CNC-GA-PAM films revealed exceptional water resistance without losing the regular chiral structure and structural color of CNCs. The influences of the content of tougheners and adding way of the polymers on the properties of CNC films were further investigated. This work presents a novel strategy for construction of multifunctional CNC-based nanomaterials for various applications.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based chiral nematic films have recently received attention due to their unique photophysical properties. However, their fragility and single structural color mode (birefringence) restricts their further development. Herein, a flexible optoelectronic, chiral, CNC films was reported composed of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and CNCs produced by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). Due to weak interactions between CQDs and CNCs, which limit molecular sliding, the optimal tensile strength and curvature reached 65.5 MPa and 2 × 10 2 , respectively. In addition, these products retained not only the structural color of cellulose chiral films in the birefringent mode, but also introduced fluorescence in the CQD ultraviolet excitation mode. Related work also addressed the issue of cellulosic chiral film fragility and provided a new method for their production.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-based stimuli responsive photonic materials demonstrate great application potential in mechanical and chemical sensors. However, due to the hydrophilic property of cellulose molecular, a significant challenge is to build a water-resistant photonic CNCs material. Here, inspired by butterfly wings with vivid structural color and superhydrophobic property, we have designed a CNCs based superhydrophobic iridescent film with hierarchical structures. The iridescent colored layer is ascribed to the chiral nematic alignment of CNCs, the superhydrophobic layer is ascribed to the micro-nano structures of polymer microspheres. Specially, superhydrophobic iridescent CNCs film could be used as an efficient colorimetric humidity sensor due to the existence of 'stomates' on superhydrophobic layer, which allowed the humid gas to enter into and out from the humidity responsive chiral nematic layers. Meanwhile, superhydrophobic iridescent films show out-standing self-cleaning and anti-fouling performance. Moreover, when the one side of the CNCs film was covered with superhydrophobic layer, the Janus film displays asymmetric expansion and bending behaviors as well as responsive structural colors in hydrous ethanol. This CNCs based hierarchical photonic materials have promising applications including photonic sensors suitable for extreme environment and smart photonic actuators.

Abstract:Fabrication process of digital printing decorative panel. Enhancement mechanism of UV‐curable wood coatings by cellulose nanofibrils and carboxylated organo‐montmorillonite. In this study, the impact of incorporating cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and carboxylated organo‐montmorillonite (OMMT), separately or in combination, into a UV‐curable wood coating was evaluated for performance enhancement. This study investigated the influence of nanoparticle loading percentage on the mechanical properties and thermal behavior of the coating, as well as the surface properties of digitally printed decorative wood‐based panels. The results indicated that the addition of CNF or OMMT increased the viscosity of the polymer solutions. Although CNF randomly oriented within the matrices, OMMT adhered to the surface of the polymer matrix. Chemical crosslinking was observed between CNF/OMMT and the coating. The addition of CNF and OMMT improved the thermal stability of the neat UV curing coating. The tensile strength of nanocomposite films with a 6 wt% loading of CNF increased significantly from 7.63 MPa to 12.73 MPa compared to pure films. The reinforcing effect of CNF on the tensile performance was significantly better than that of OMMT. Adding CNF to the matte coating slightly improved the clarity of the printed decorative panels. Abstract:As a nanoscale renewable resource derived from lignocellulosic materials, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have the features of high purity, high crystallinity, high aspect ratio, high Young's modulus, and large specific surface area. The most interesting trait is that they can form the entire films with bright structural colors through the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) process under certain conditions. Structural color originates from micro-nano structure of CNCs matrixes via the interaction of nanoparticles with light, rather than the absorption and reflection of light from the pigment. CNCs are the new generation of photonic liquid crystal materials of choice due to their simple and convenient preparation processes, environmentally friendly fabrication approaches, and intrinsic chiral nematic structure. Therefore, understanding the forming mechanism of CNCs in nanoarchitectonics is crucial to multiple fields of physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering application. Herein, a timely summary of the chiral photonic liquid crystal films derived from CNCs is systematically presented. The relationship of CNC, structural color, chiral nematic structure, film performance, and applications of chiral photonic liquid crystal films is discussed. The review article also summarizes the most recent achievements in the field of CNCs-based photonic functional materials along with the faced challenges.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were incorporated into poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to tailor the mechanical and dielectric properties of this electroactive polymer. PVDF/CNC nanocomposites with concentrations up to 15 wt.% were prepared by solvent-casting followed by quick vacuum drying in order to ensure the formation of the electroactive γ-phase. The changes induced by the presence of CNCs on the morphology of PVDF and its crystalline structure, thermal properties, mechanical performance and dielectric behavior are explored. The results suggest a relevant role of the CNC surface −OH groups, which interact with PVDF fluorine atoms. The real dielectric constant ε’ of nanocomposites at 200 Hz was found to increase by 3.6 times up to 47 for the 15 wt.% CNC nanocomposite due to an enhanced ionic conductivity provided by CNCs. The approach reported here in order to boost the formation of the γ-phase of PVDF upon the incorporation of CNCs serves to further develop cellulose-based multifunctional materials.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) derived from cellulose can form a liquid crystal film with bright structural color by evaporative-induced self-assembly (EISA). As a new class of photonic liquid crystals material, it has attracted much attention because of its intrinsic unique structural characteristics and excellent optical properties. However, the brittleness and water sensitivity of CNC film have hindered its practical application. Herein, multiple cross-linked networks CNC/(polyethylene glycol diacrylate:polyethylene oxide) (PEGDA:PEO) composite film was prepared through EISA and UV irradiation strategies. The as-prepared film exhibits high-flexibility with a fracture strain of up to 36.40 % and strong water resistance, with water absorption at an equilibrium of only 17.41 %. Moreover, the film retains its structural color in aqueous solution for a long time due to its water stability. The outstanding flexibility and water resistance of CNC composite film are attributed to multiple crosslinked networks (i.e. PEGDA, PEO, and PEDGA-PEO networks), which endow the film with excellent stress dispersion and transferability when stretched and limit film swelling in water without affecting chiral nematic structures of CNC. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy to prepare CNC-based film with high-flexibility, water resistance, and optical property for applications like decoration, sensor, and anti-counterfeiting.
