Abstract:Background Patient safety climate constitutes an important element for quality improvement. Its current evidence base has been generated in hospital settings in developed countries. Studies in dentistry are limited. Objective To systematically explore the evidence regarding assessing patient safety climate in dentistry. Methods We developed a search strategy to explore MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases from January 1st, 2002, to December 31st, 2022, to include observational studies on patient safety culture or patient safety climate assessment. Methodological features and item data concerning the dimensions employed for assessment were extracted and thematically analyzed. Reported scores were also collected. Results Nine articles out of 5584 were included in this study. Most studies were generated from high‐income economies. Our analysis revealed methodological variations. Non‐randomized samples were employed (ranging from 139 to 656 participants), and response rates varied from 28% to 93.7%. Three types of measurement instruments have been adapted to assess patient safety climate. These mainly consisted of replacing words or rewording sentences. Only one study employed an instrument previously validated through psychometric methods. In general, patient safety climate levels were either low or neutral. Only one study reported scores equal to or greater than 75. Discussion Despite diverse assessment tools, our two‐decade analysis reveals a lag compared with medicine, resulting in methodological variations for assessing patient safety climate. Collaboration is vital to elevate standards, prioritize patient safety across oral healthcare services, and advocate for integrating safety climate into local and national quality and patient safety strategies.

Design Approaches for Developing Quality Checklists in Healthcare Organizations: A Scoping Review.

Abstract:Quality checklists have demonstrated benefits in healthcare and other high-reliability organizations, but there remains a gap in the understanding of design approaches and levels of stakeholder engagement in the development of these quality checklists. This scoping review aims to synthesize the current knowledge base regarding the use of various design approaches for developing quality checklists in healthcare. Secondary objectives are to explore theoretical frameworks, design principles, stakeholder involvement and engagement, and characteristics of the design methods used for developing quality checklists. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews 2020 checklist. Seven databases (PubMed, APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, ACM Digital Library, and IEEE Xplore) were searched for studies using a comprehensive search strategy developed in collaboration with a health sciences librarian. Search terms included “checklist” and “user-centered design” and their related terms. The IAP2 Spectrum of Participation Framework was used to categorize studies by level of stakeholder engagement during data extraction. Twenty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. Twenty-three distinct design methods were identified that were predominantly non-collaborative in nature (e.g., interviews, surveys, and other methods that involved only one researcher and one participant at a given time). Analysis of the levels of stakeholder engagement revealed a gap in studies that empowered their stakeholders in the quality checklist design process. Highly effective, clear, and standardized methodology are needed for the design of quality checklists. Future work needs to explore how stakeholders can be empowered in the design process, and how different levels of stakeholder engagement might impact implementation outcomes.

Abstract:Patient safety is a global challenge in healthcare, with adverse events representing a significant concern. The integration of patient safety education in undergraduate curricula is crucial in developing a culture of safety and safe practices among future professionals. However, there is a gap in research assessing the levels of knowledge and attitudes about patient safety among undergraduate students in healthcare using validated instruments. This scoping review aims to map the levels of knowledge and attitudes about patient safety among students in healthcare courses, allowing for national and international comparisons. The review will follow the methodological frameworks proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for scoping reviews. The search will include published and unpublished studies in six databases, with no date or language restrictions. This scoping review was prospectively registered with the Open Science Framework on 17 July 2024. This scoping review will provide a comprehensive overview of knowledge and attitudes about patient safety among undergraduate students in healthcare, identifying gaps in patient safety education and areas for improvement in curricula. The results may guide teachers in creating teaching strategies to prepare future healthcare professionals, reducing knowledge gaps and improving the quality of care.
Patients' and healthcare workers' recommendations for a surgical patient safety checklist - a qualitative study

Abstract:Background: Patients' involvement in patient safety has increased in healthcare. Use of checklists may improve patient outcome in surgery, though few have attempted to engage patients' use of surgical checklist. To identify risk elements of complications based on patients' and healthcare workers' experiences is warranted. This study aims to identify what the patients and healthcare workers find to be the risk elements that should be included in a patient-driven surgical patient safety checklist. Method: A qualitative study design where post-operative patients, surgeons, ward physicians, ward nurses, and secretaries from five surgical specialties took part in focus group interviews. Eleven focus groups were conducted including 25 post-operative patients and 27 healthcare workers at one tertiary teaching hospital and one community hospital in Norway. Based on their experiences, participants were asked to identify perceived risks before and after surgery. The interviews were analysed using content analysis. Results: Safety risk factors were categorised as pre-operative information: pre-operative preparations, post-operative information, post-operative plans and follow-up. The subcategories under pre-operative information and preparations were: contact information, medication safety, health status, optimising health, dental status, read information, preparation two weeks before surgery, inform your surgical ward, planning your own discharge, preparation on admission and just before surgery. The subcategories under post-operative information, further plans and follow-up were: prevention and complications, restriction and activity, medication safety, pain relief, stomach functions, further care and appointments. Both healthcare workers and patients express the need for a surgical patient safety checklist. Conclusion: A broad spectre of risk elements for a patient safety checklist were identified. Developing a surgical safety checklist based on these risk elements might reduce complications and unwanted errors. Abstract:Objectives: This narrative review aimed to explore the impact of checklists and error reporting systems on hospital patient safety and medical errors. Methods: A systematic search of academic databases from 2013 to 2023 was conducted, and peer-reviewed studies meeting inclusion criteria were assessed for methodological rigor. The review highlights evidence supporting the efficacy of checklists in reducing medication errors, surgical complications, and other adverse events. Error reporting systems foster transparency, encouraging professionals to report incidents and identify systemic vulnerabilities. Results: Checklists and error reporting systems are interconnected. Interprofessional collaboration is emphasized in checklist implementation. In this review, limitations arise due to the different methodologies used in the articles and potential publication bias. In addition, language restrictions may exclude valuable non-English research. While positive impacts are evident, success depends on organizational culture and resources. Conclusions: This review contributes to patient safety knowledge by examining the relevant literature, emphasizing the importance of interventions, and calling for further research into their effectiveness across diverse healthcare and cultural settings. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for healthcare providers to optimize patient safety outcomes.

Abstract:Objectives: The safe surgery checklist, presented by the World Health Organization in 2008, is an aid to performing surgical interventions safely. Research indicates that the use of checklists in clinical activities leads to a reduced number of adverse events. However, research suggests that the use of checklists differs between different institutions and even between units in the same organisation. The intention of this study is to identify factors regarded by the health personnel in 'the sharp end' as obstacles to using the checklist. Methods: The study has a qualitative, case-based design. It is performed by the Hazard Identification method, which is a method for revealing safety hazards based on workers' experiences. Results: Obstacles were identified related to the content of the list, areas of use, distribution of responsibilities connected with the use of the list, and finally the organisation and management of safety efforts related to clinical activities. The use of checklists must be part of a system's perspective, and deviations from checklists must be discussed in the organisation. The informants also claimed that checklists should be implemented for interventions located outside the operating theatres and for emergency treatments. Conclusions: Even though the majority of employees believe that checklists are necessary, many surrounding factors are perceived as obstacles to their use. Not least, site-specific factors may be revealed by use of the Hazard Identification method.

Abstract:Background and Objective: The positive effects of the WHO Surgery Safety Checklist (WHO SSC) have been demonstrated by a large amount of quantitative studies. With this review, the focus changes to the content of qualitative studies on WHO SSC to identify possible research gaps. In this way, gaps in the content of the execution of individual checklists can be closed.Methods: The two research platforms "Ovid Medline" and "PubMed" formed a solid basis for the literature research. The search was conducted until the 19th of September 2022. The following group terms were used: "checklist", "surgery", "implementation", and "WHO Surgical Safety Checklist". Subsequently, the literature research was limited to studies between 2011 and 2021 in either English or German.Key Content and Findings: Overall, a positive effect was found in all qualitative studies on WHO SSC with respect to leadership, teamwork, timing and acceptance. Acceptance through effective implementation of the SSC deserves special mention. Several studies highlighted the lack of understanding and training, which led to variation in execution. A large number of studies agree that the WHO SSC is fostering teamwork and improving communication. However, there are also hurdles and barriers in the application that seem to have an influence on the effectiveness.Conclusions: The exact mechanisms of the advantage and application of the checklist are still poorly understood. Further research in this area is needed for a better understanding of the underlying work culture and consequently improving patient safety.

Feasibility of implementing a surgical patient safety checklist: prospective cross-sectional evaluation

Abstract:Background: The World Health Organization's Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030 call for attention to patient and family involvement to reduce preventable patient harm. Existing evidence indicates that patients' involvement in their own safety has positive effects on reducing hospitalisation time and readmissions. One intervention reported in the literature is the use of checklists designed for patients' completion. Studies on such checklists are small scale, but they are linked to reduction in length of hospital stay and readmissions. We have previously developed and validated a two-part surgical patient safety checklist (PASC). This study aims to investigate the feasibility of the PASC usage and implementation prior to its use in a large-scale clinical trial. Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional feasibility study, set up as part of the design of a larger stepped-wedge cluster randomised controlled trial (SW-CRCT). Descriptive statistics were used to investigate patient demographics, reasons for not completing the PASC and percentage of PASC item usage. Qualitative patient interviews were used to identify barriers and drivers for implementation. Interview was analysed through content analysis. Results: Out of 428 recruited patients, 50.2% (215/428) used both parts of PASC. A total of 24.1% (103/428) of the patients did not use it at all due to surgical or COVID-19-related cancellations. A total of 19.9% (85/428) did not consent to participate, 5.1% (22/428) lost the checklist and 0.7% (3/428) of the patients died during the study. A total of 86.5% (186/215) patients used ≥ 80% of the checklist items. Barriers and drivers for PASC implementation were grouped into the following categories: Time frame for completing the checklist, patient safety checklist design, impetus to communicate with healthcare professionals and support throughout the surgical pathway. Conclusions: Elective surgical patients were willing and able to use PASC. The study further revealed a set of barriers and drivers to the implementation. A large-scale definitive clinical-implementation hybrid trial is being launched to ascertain the clinical effectiveness and scalability of PASC in improving surgical patient safety. Relationship between patient safety culture and patient experience in hospital settings: a scoping review

Abstract:Background: Measures of patient safety culture and patient experience are both commonly utilised to evaluate the quality of healthcare services, including hospitals, but the relationship between these two domains remains uncertain. In this study, we aimed to explore and synthesise published literature regarding the relationships between these topics in hospital settings. Methods: This study was performed using the five stages of Arksey and O'Malley's Framework, refined by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Searches were conducted in the CINAHL, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, SciELO and Scopus databases. Further online search on the websites of pertinent organisations in Australia and globally was conducted. Data were extracted against predetermined criteria. Results: 4512 studies were initially identified; 15 studies met the inclusion criteria. Several positive statistical relationships between patient safety culture and patient experience domains were identified. Communication and teamwork were the most influential factors in the relationship between patient safety culture and patient experience. Managers and clinicians had a positive view of safety and a positive relationship with patient experience, but this was not the case when managers alone held such views. Qualitative methods offered further insights into patient safety culture from patients' and families' perspectives. Conclusion: The findings indicate that the patient can recognise safety-related issues that the hospital team may miss. However, studies mostly measured staff perspectives on patient safety culture and did not always include patient experiences of patient safety culture. Further, the relationship between patient safety culture and patient experience is generally identified as a statistical relationship, using quantitative methods. Further research assessing patient safety culture alongside patient experience is essential for providing a more comprehensive picture of safety. This will help to uncover issues and other factors that may have an indirect effect on patient safety culture and patient experience.
An Intelligent Support System for Patient Safety Checklists

Abstract:Safety checklists have gain increasingly attention in recent years as an effective way of standardizing healthcare.They serve as a quality improving tool by enabling providers checking the variance between the actual situation and the best practice prior to the critical activities.However,the traditional checklists in paper form are lack of integration with clinical workflow,specification to individual patients and information system support,which increases the workload of providers and leads to ineffective implementation.This study decomposed safety checklist knowledge into 4 layers,i.e.clinical workflow,checklist form,medical algorithm and supplementary information,aiming to make checklists adjustable and executable by computerized systems.A support system had been developed according to the checklist representation and execution mechanism.The system was able to reduce the providers' workload by integrating checklist into the daily care process of providers for individual patients and providing related patient data and knowledge.A percutaneous coronary intervention peri-operative checklist set had been used to validate the proposed system.By using the system,the process was decomposed into 11 scenarios integrated with the actual clinical workflow.In each scenario,a group of clinical algorithms was applied to produce checkable items.The results indicated that the proposed approach effectively supported the representation and execution of checklists and providers could have benefit from the system by using the process-oriented and patient-specific checklists.
Implementation and adoption of SOAP-M and SBAR at a German anesthesiology department - a single-center survey study

Abstract:Background: Checklists are a common tool used in order to mitigate risks caused by human factors and can facilitate the safe induction of anesthesia as well as handovers. SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) is a checklist recommended by the WHO and DGAI for handovers, while SOAP-M (Suction, Oxygen, Airway, Pharmaceuticals, Monitoring) is a checklist for the induction of anesthesia. This study investigates the implementation and adoption of these two checklists. Methods: We conducted a single-center online survey one year after the implementation of SOAP-M and SBAR at a university hospital's anesthesiology department, using scales from three validated questionnaires to assess safety attitudes as well as the behavior of staff and the perceived usefulness of the checklists. Results: Staff with a high score in general attitude towards patient safety, as determined by the safety attitudes questionnaire, considered both checklists useful additions to their work environment. Nurses and physicians (p = 0.102) as well as groups divided according to work experience (p = 0.077) showed no significant differences in using SOAP-M and SBAR. Perceived usefulness was significantly higher (p < 0.001) among users of the checklists, and the same goes for positive reinforcement (p < 0.001), social cues (p = 0.0215) and goal cues (p = 0.0252). Conclusion: SOAP-M and SBAR are perceived as useful checklists for patient handovers and anesthesia induction by tertiary referral hospital's employees with high score in general safety attitude and were therefore commonly used one year after their introduction. No significant difference in checklist adoption between occupations as well as groups divided according to work experience could be found. Perceived usefulness is significantly higher among users of the checklist, who feel using the checklists provides more support.
[Implementation of the Perioperative WHO Safety Checklist at a Maximum Care Hospital - A Retrospective Analysis]

Abstract:Background: In recent years there has been a significant increase of surgical procedures worldwide. Perioperative complication occurred in approximately 10 %, mortality was about 0.5 %. Half of these adverse events were considered to have been preventable. With the introduction of a perioperative checklist by the WHO in 2008, a significant reduction of morbidity and mortality could be achieved. The aim of this study was to investigate the success of the implementation process of the checklist at a maximum care hospital over a three-year period and to expose and analyse any occurring issues. Patients and methods: At various time points (introduction phase, five months, one year and three years after implementation) a total of 358 operations was investigated. First the presence and the handling of the checklist were investigated followed by an analysis of possible influencing factors on the processing. To examine a potential perioperative malpractice, three typical perioperative errors known from the literature on patient safety were analysed. Results: The presence of the checklist improved significantly during the study. With the exception of the first column (signed by ward nurse) the checklist was processed more often among the participants (anaesthesia nurse, anaesthesia physician, surgeon) over the time. However the "sign out" column edited by the surgeon at the end of the operation fell below expectations. In addition to the duration after implementation the level of experience of the surgeon was a relevant factor for a properly completed checklist. During the study a malpractice was found in two cases, a checklist could not be detected. Conclusion: Within the study we could demonstrate the difficulties of introducing a surgical checklist at a maximum care hospital. Therefore involved nursing or medical staff must be aware of the usefulness of the checklist and should be motivated to use it. In addition, periodical lectures, training courses and role modelling of nursing and medical staff are required. The objective must be to establish the checklist into daily routine as it is a simple and efficient tool to reduce perioperative morbidity and mortality.
Instruments for Patient Safety Assessment: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Background: Patient safety is an important component of healthcare service quality, and there are numerous instruments in the literature that measure patient safety. This scoping reviewaims to map the instruments/scales for assessing patient safety in healthcare services. Method: This scoping review follows the JBI methodology. The protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework. Eligibility criteria were defined based on studies that include instruments or scales for assessing patient safety in healthcare services, in any language, and without temporal restrictions. It adhered to all scoping review checklist items [PRISMA-ScR], with searches in the Embase, Lilacs, MedLine, and Scopus databases, as well as the repository of the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. Two independent reviewers performed selection and data extraction in July 2023. Results: Of the 4019 potential titles, 63 studies reported on a total of 47 instruments/scales and 71 dimensions for patient safety assessment. The most-described dimensions were teamwork, professional satisfaction, safety climate, communication, and working conditions. Conclusion: The diversity of instruments and dimensions for patient safety assessment characterizes the multidimensionality and scope of patient safety. However, it hinders benchmarking between institutions and healthcare units.

Creating a high-performance surgical safety checklist: A multimodal evaluation plan to reinvigorate the checklist

Abstract:Rationale, aims, and objectives: The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist is a communication tool designed to improve surgical safety processes and enhance teamwork. It has been widely adopted since its introduction over ten years ago. As surgical safety needs evolve, organizations should periodically review and update their checklists. A holistic evaluation of the checklist in the context of an organization is the first step to making informed updates. In this article, we describe a comprehensive but feasible strategy for checklist evaluation which we developed and implemented as part of a surgical safety initiative in a high-performing center. Methods: A three-part evaluation plan was developed and carried out by a multidisciplinary team. The evaluation included assessment of 1. Quality of care through a review of surgical safety events; 2. Safety culture through a validated survey and informal feedback; and 3. Checklist performance through direct observations and a staff survey. To prepare for re-implementation the current institutional checklist was critically evaluated and a context assessment survey was administered to surgical staff. Results: The evaluation revealed challenges in communication and teamwork, with surgical staff often perceived to be working in silos. The quality of care assessment indicated room for improvement in safety processes. Deficiencies in the safety culture measures of communication and feedback shed light on an overall lack of engagement with the checklist. Checklist performance demonstrated good adherence to the items on the checklist but limited engagement by the surgical team and minimal communication between subteams. These findings informed our revisions to the checklist and its implementation processes. Conclusions: We developed and implemented a comprehensive, scalable approach to checklist evaluation which directly informed improvements to the checklist that were tailored to the organization's current context. Organizations can apply this framework to breathe new life into their checklist and transform their safety culture.
The surgical safety checklist and patient outcomes after surgery: a prospective observational cohort study, systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: The surgical safety checklist is widely used to improve the quality of perioperative care. However, clinicians continue to debate the clinical effectiveness of this tool. Methods: Prospective analysis of data from the International Surgical Outcomes Study (ISOS), an international observational study of elective in-patient surgery, accompanied by a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature. The exposure was surgical safety checklist use. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality and the secondary outcome was postoperative complications. In the ISOS cohort, a multivariable multi-level generalized linear model was used to test associations. To further contextualise these findings, we included the results from the ISOS cohort in a meta-analysis. Results are reported as odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals. Results: We included 44 814 patients from 497 hospitals in 27 countries in the ISOS analysis. There were 40 245 (89.8%) patients exposed to the checklist, whilst 7508 (16.8%) sustained ≥1 postoperative complications and 207 (0.5%) died before hospital discharge. Checklist exposure was associated with reduced mortality [odds ratio (OR) 0.49 (0.32-0.77); P<0.01], but no difference in complication rates [OR 1.02 (0.88-1.19); P=0.75]. In a systematic review, we screened 3732 records and identified 11 eligible studies of 453 292 patients including the ISOS cohort. Checklist exposure was associated with both reduced postoperative mortality [OR 0.75 (0.62-0.92); P<0.01; I2=87%] and reduced complication rates [OR 0.73 (0.61-0.88); P<0.01; I2=89%). Conclusions: Patients exposed to a surgical safety checklist experience better postoperative outcomes, but this could simply reflect wider quality of care in hospitals where checklist use is routine.

Abstract:Safety checklists have been considered as a promising tool for improving patient safety for decades. Computerized checklists have better performance compared with paper-based checklists, though there are barriers to their adoption. Given previous literature, it is still unclear what assists implementations and their challenges. To address this issue, this paper summarizes the implementation of two successful computerized checklist implementations in two countries for two different clinical scenarios and analyzes their facilitators and challenges.

Abstract:Background: Internationally, patient-accessible electronic health records (PAEHRs) are increasingly being implemented. Despite reported benefits to patients, the innovation has prompted concerns among health care professionals (HCPs), including the possibility that access incurs a "dumbing down" of clinical records. Currently, no review has investigated empirical evidence of whether and how documentation changes after introducing PAEHRs. Objective: This paper presents the protocol for a scoping review examining potential subjective and objective changes in HCPs documentation after using PAEHRs. Methods: This scoping review will be carried out based on the framework of Arksey and O'Malley. Several databases will be used to conduct a literature search (APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, PubMed, and Web of Science Core Collection). Authors will participate in screening identified papers to explore the research questions: How do PAEHRs affect HCPs' documentation practices? and What subjective and objective changes to the clinical notes arise after patient access? Only studies that relate to actual use experiences, and not merely prior expectations about PAEHRs, will be selected in the review. Data abstraction will include but will not be limited to publication type, publication year, country, sample characteristics, setting, study aim, research question, and conclusions. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool will be used to assess the quality of the studies included. Results: The results from this scoping review will be presented as a narrative synthesis structured along the key themes of the corpus of evidence. Additional data will be prepared in charts or tabular format. We anticipate the results to be presented in a scoping review at a later date. They will be disseminated at scientific conferences and through publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Conclusions: This is the first scoping review that considers potential change in documentation after implementation of PAEHRs. The results can potentially help affirm or refute prior opinions and expectations among various stakeholders about the use of PAEHRs and thereby help to address uncertainties. Results may help to provide guidance to clinicians in writing notes and thus have immediate practical relevance to care. In addition, the review will help to identify any substantive research gaps in this field of research. In the longer term, our findings may contribute to the development of shared documentation guidelines, which in turn are central to improving patient communication and safety. Abstract:Emergency departments (EDs) are at high risk for medical errors. Checklist implementation programs have been associated with improved patient outcomes in other high-risk clinical settings and when used to address specific aspects of ED care. The aim of this study was to develop an ED Safety Checklist with broad applicability across different international ED settings. A three-round modified Delphi consensus process was conducted with a multidisciplinary and multinational panel of experts in emergency medicine and patient safety. Initial checklist items were identified through a systematic review of the literature. Each item was evaluated for inclusion in the final checklist during two rounds of web-based surveys and an online consensus meeting. Agreement for inclusion was defined a priori with a threshold of 80% combined agreement. Eighty panel members from 34 countries across all seven world regions participated in the study, with comparable representation from low- and middle-income and high-income countries. The final checklist contains 86 items divided into: (1) a general ED Safety Checklist focused on diagnostic evaluation, patient reassessment, and disposition and (2) five domain-specific ED Safety Checklists focused on handoff, invasive procedures, triage, treatment prescription, and treatment administration. The checklist includes key clinical tasks to prevent medical errors, as well as items to improve communication among ED team members and with patients and their families. This novel ED Safety Checklist defines the essential elements of high-quality ED care and has the potential to ensure their consistent implementation worldwide.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of the present scoping review is to map the literature reporting on the application of digital workflows and digital technologies in the diagnosis, treatment, or management of dental conditions in paediatric patients. Furthermore, the review focuses on identifying possible knowledge gaps in the area and developing specific recommendations for future investigations. Methods: An electronic search was performed on 3 databases up to July 2023. After the authors independently screened the retrieved articles, they extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias using the JBI (The Joanna Briggs Institute) critical appraisal tools and the Cochrane Risk of Bias 1 tool, depending on the study design assessed. Results: After full-text assessment, 58 studies were identified that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results were divided into two groups according to the study design: 36 were research articles, and 22 were case reports; only the research articles were included in the qualitative synthesis. The most common topic was Scanners/3 d digital model analysis (11 articles), followed by Digital Imaging (8 articles). Digital applications were also a popular topic, and tele-dentistry and artificial intelligence were also present in the included studies. Conclusion: Studies investigating the use of digital workflows and digital technologies in the diagnosis, treatment or management of dental conditions in paediatric dentistry are lacking. In general, future investigations should be based on higher quality studies; furthermore, the lack of studies on the clinical validation of digitally fabricated orthodontic devices and restorations in paediatric patients provides insights for future research.

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study was to conduct a scoping review to examine and summarize the characteristics of research related to mental health (MH) screenings and/or referrals to treatment in dental practices. Methods We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines for Scoping Reviews and searched multiple databases for terms connected with dental care, MH concerns, screening, and referral. Included articles: (1) described care provided in a dental practice, (2) described a situation where the patient is experiencing the potential MH problem, (3) did not involve dental anxiety exclusively, and (4) involved some form of MH screening and/or referral to treatment. Article analysis included a summary of key study characteristics, types of evidence, study design, and central concepts and definitions. Results The search generated 2050 records, with 26 ultimately included. Most studies involved only adults (22, 85%), but only three (12%) reported on rurality (two urban; one mixed) and only two each (8%) reported race or ethnicity. Fifteen (58%) articles were prospective and 11 (42%) were retrospective. The studies varied widely in study designs, from 11 (42%) cross‐sectional methodologies to only one (4%) randomized controlled trial. Thirty‐four screening tools were used to screen for symptoms of 43 MH conditions, with depression and anxiety screened for most frequently. Few articles discussed making referrals, practice workflows, or follow‐up outcomes. Conclusions Included studies provide evidence of viable options for dental practitioners regarding MH screening, referring, and conducting follow‐up, but lack specificity regarding these processes. Overall, more research is needed to clarify what workflows are most efficient for dental practitioners and efficacious in identifying patients with MH concerns.
