Abstract:The ecological and evolutionary benefits of energy-saving in collective behaviors are rooted in the physical principles and physiological mechanisms underpinning animal locomotion. We propose a turbulence sheltering hypothesis that collective movements of fish schools in turbulent flow can reduce the total energetic cost of locomotion by shielding individuals from the perturbation of chaotic turbulent eddies. We test this hypothesis by quantifying energetics and kinematics in schools of giant danio ( Devario aequipinnatus ) and compared that to solitary individuals swimming under laminar and turbulent conditions over a wide speed range. We discovered that, when swimming at high speeds and high turbulence levels, fish schools reduced their total energy expenditure (TEE, both aerobic and anaerobic energy) by 63% to 79% compared to solitary fish (e.g., 228 versus 48 kj kg −1 ). Solitary individuals spend approximately 22% more kinematic effort (tail beat amplitude•frequency: 1.7 versus 1.4 BL s −1 ) to swim in turbulence at higher speeds than in laminar conditions. Fish schools swimming in turbulence reduced their three-dimensional group volume by 41% to 68% (at higher speeds, approximately 103 versus 33 cm 3 ) and did not alter their kinematic effort compared to laminar conditions. This substantial energy saving highlights that schooling behaviors can mitigate turbulent disturbances by sheltering fish (within schools) from the eddies of sufficient kinetic energy that can disrupt locomotor gaits. Therefore, providing a more desirable internal hydrodynamic environment could be one of the ecological drivers underlying collective behaviors in a dense fluid environment.

Providing a more desirable internal hydrodynamic environment could be one of the ecological drivers underlying collective behaviours in a dense fluid environment.

Abstract:There is increasing evidence that fish gain energetic benefits when they swim in a school. The most recent indications of such benefits are a lower tail (or fin) beat at the back of a school and reduced oxygen consumption in schooling fish versus solitary ones. How such advantages may arise is poorly understood. Current hydrodynamic theories concern either fish swimming side by side or in a diamond configuration and they largely ignore effects of viscosity and interactions among wakes and individuals. In reality, however, hydrodynamic effects are complex and fish swim in many configurations. Since these hydrodynamic effects are difficult to study empirically, we investigate them in a computer model by incorporating viscosity and interactions among wakes and with individuals. We compare swimming efficiency of mullets of 12.6 cm travelling solitarily and in schools of four different configurations at several inter-individual distances. The resulting Reynolds number (based on fish length) is approximately 1150. We show that these fish always swim more efficiently in a school than alone (except in a dense phalanx). We indicate how this efficiency may emerge from several kinds of interactions among wakes and individuals. Since individuals in our simulations are not even intending to exploit the wake, gains in efficiency are obtained more easily than previously thought.

Hydrodynamics in A Diamond-Shaped Fish School

Abstract:In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics was applied to fish-like swimming, and the propulsion mechanism of this motion was focused. Although previous researchers have suggested that a diamond shape of fish school is helpful for drag reduction and efficiency enhancement, and individuals can benefit from such a school, experimental data or numerical studies on the hydrodynamics of interactions among members in the fish school are lacking. An improved immersed boundary method was employed for the simulations, and a basic element of three fishes was picked out from the diamond-shaped fish school. The conclusion is drawn that a fish situated laterally midway between two fish of the preceding column can benefit from the reversed Karman vortex street shedding from the upstream fish; and therefore the propulsion efficiency is increased, and the power consumed is reduced. Such a result accords well with the previous hypothesis.

Abstract:Many animals moving through fluids exhibit highly coordinated group movement that is thought to reduce the cost of locomotion. However, direct energetic measurements demonstrating the energy-saving benefits of fluid-mediated collective movements remain elusive. By characterizing both aerobic and anaerobic metabolic energy contributions in schools of giant danio ( Devario aequipinnatus ), we discovered that fish schools have a concave upward shaped metabolism–speed curve, with a minimum metabolic cost at ~1 body length s -1 . We demonstrate that fish schools reduce total energy expenditure (TEE) per tail beat by up to 56% compared to solitary fish. When reaching their maximum sustained swimming speed, fish swimming in schools had a 44% higher maximum aerobic performance and used 65% less non-aerobic energy compared to solitary individuals, which lowered the TEE and total cost of transport by up to 53%, near the lowest recorded for any aquatic organism. Fish in schools also recovered from exercise 43% faster than solitary fish. The non-aerobic energetic savings that occur when fish in schools actively swim at high speed can considerably improve both peak and repeated performance which is likely to be beneficial for evading predators. These energetic savings may underlie the prevalence of coordinated group locomotion in fishes.

Abstract:Spatially heterogeneous turbulent flow refers to nonuniform flow with coexisting multiple flow velocities, which is widely distributed in fish natural or husbandry environments, and its hydraulic parameters affect fish swimming behavior. In this study, a complex hydrodynamic environment with three flow velocity regions (low, medium, and high) coexisting in an open-channel flume was designed to explore volitional swimming ability, the spatial-temporal distribution of fish swimming trajectories, and the range of preferred hydrodynamic parameters of Schizothorax prenanti individual and schooling (three fish). The results showed that the swimming speed of individual fish during upstream migration was significantly higher than that of fish schools (p < 0.05). The swimming trajectories of fish schooling showed that they spent more time synchronously exploring the flow environment during upstream migration compared with individual fish. By superimposing the fish swimming trajectories on the environmental flow field, the range of hydrodynamic environments preferred by fish in complex flow fields was quantified. This research provides a novel approach for investigating the natural swimming behavior of fish species, and a theoretical reference for the restoration of fish natural habitats or flow enrichment of husbandry environments.

Abstract:Mechanisms for hydrodynamic benefit via fluid interactions in large planar fish schools ( n ≥ 10) are investigated by two-dimensional numerical simulations of carangiform fish swimming. It is observed that the average swimming efficiency of the 10-fish school is increased by 30% over a single swimmer, along with a thrust production improvement of 114%. The performance and flow analyses characterize the associated hydrodynamic interaction mechanisms in large dense schools leading to enhanced performance. First, anterior body suction arises from the proximity of the suction side of the flapping tail to the head of the following fish. Next, the block effect is observed as another fish body blocks the flow behind a fish. Finally, the wall effect enhances the flow of momentum downstream where the body of a neighboring fish acts as a wall for the flapping of a fish tail moving toward it. Because these primary body–body interactions are based on the arrangement of surrounding fish, a classification of the individual fish within the school is presented based on the intra-fish interactions and is reflected in the performance of the individuals. It is shown that the school can be separated as front fish, middle fish, edge fish, and back fish based on the geometric position, performance, and wake characteristics. Finally, groupings and mechanisms observed are proven to be consistent over a range of Reynolds numbers and school arrangements.

Abstract:Fish schools are ubiquitous in marine life. Although flow interactions are thought to be beneficial for schooling, their exact effects on the speed, energetics, and stability of the group remain elusive. Recent experiments suggest that flow interactions stabilize in-tandem formations of heaving foils. Here, we propose a minimal approach based on the vortex sheet model that captures salient features of the flow interactions among flapping swimmers, and we study the free swimming of a pair of in-line swimmers driven with identical heaving or pitching motions. We find that, independent of the flapping mode, the follower passively stabilizes at discrete locations in the wake of the leader, consistent with the heaving foil experiments, but pitching swimmers exhibit tighter and more cohesive formations. Further, in comparison to swimming alone, pitching motions increase the energetic efficiency of the group while heaving motions result in a slight increase in the swimming speed. These results recapitulate that flow interactions provide a passive mechanism that promotes school cohesion, and provide novel insight into the role of the flapping mode in controlling the emergent properties of the school.

Effects of Different Motion Parameters on the Interaction of Fish School Subsystems

Abstract:For a long time, fish school swimming has attracted a great deal of attention in biological systems, as fish schools can have complex hydrodynamic effects on individuals. This work adopted a non-iterative, immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM). A numerical simulation of two-dimensional three-degree-of-freedom self-propelled fish, in side-by-side, staggered, and triangle formations, was conducted by adjusting spacing and motion parameters. A comprehensive analysis of individual speed gains and energy efficiencies in these formations was carried out. Furthermore, an analysis of the hydrodynamic characteristics of fish schools was performed, using instantaneous vorticity profiles and pressure fields. Certain studies have shown that passive interactions between individuals cannot always bring hydrodynamic benefits. The swimming efficiency of side-by-side formations in the same phase gradually increases as the distance decreases, but it also brings certain burdens to individuals when the phases are different. This paper also shows that the roles of passive interactions, spacing, and deflections affect fish school subsystems differently. When the low-pressure areas created by a wake vortex act on one side of an individual's body, the tail-end fish are good at gaining hydrodynamic benefits from it. This effect is not universal, and the degree to which individuals benefit from changes in exercise parameters varies. This study provides a theoretical basis for bioinspired robots, as well as providing certain insights into the mechanism of collective biological movement.

Abstract:Fish often swim in crystallized group formations (schooling) and orient themselves against the incoming flow (rheotaxis). At the intersection of these two phenomena, we investigate the emergence of unique schooling patterns through passive hydrodynamic mechanisms in a fish pair, the simplest subsystem of a school. First, we develop a fluid dynamics-based mathematical model for the positions and orientations of two fish swimming against a flow in an infinite channel, modelling the effect of the self-propelling motion of each fish as a point-dipole. The resulting system of equations is studied to gain an understanding of the properties of the dynamical system, its equilibria and their stability. The system is found to have five types of equilibria, out of which only upstream swimming in in-line and staggered formations can be stable. A stable near-wall configuration is observed only in limiting cases. It is shown that the stability of these equilibria depends on the flow curvature and streamwise interfish distance, below critical values of which, the system may not have a stable equilibrium. The study reveals that simply through passive fluid dynamics, in the absence of any other feedback/sensing, we can justify rheotaxis and the existence of stable in-line and staggered schooling configurations.

Abstract:One of the most highly debated questions in the field of animal swarming and social behaviour, is the collective random patterns and chaotic behaviour formed by some animal species, in particular if there is a danger. Is such a behaviour beneficial or unfavourable for survival? Here we report on one of the most remarkable forms of animal swarming and social behaviour - fish schooling - from a hydrodynamic point of view. We found that some fish species do not have preferred orientation and they swarm in a random pattern mode, despite the excess of energy consumed. Our analyses, which includes calculations of the hydrodynamic forces between slender bodies, show that such a behaviour enhances the transfer of hydrodynamic information, and thus enhances the survivability of the school. These findings support the general hypothesis that a disordered and non-trivial collective behaviour of individuals within a nonlinear dynamical system is essential for optimising transfer of information - an optimisation that might be crucial for survival.

Abstract:It is a long-held perception that schooling swimming of fish can provide individuals in a group with additional hydrodynamic benefits. However how fish maintain a stable schooling formation, and the underlying interaction bases, are still unknown. This study aims to investigate effects of pure passive hydrodynamic interactions on schooling swimming and deal with whether fish can solely rely on the interactions to maintain a stable formation. The study is a pure numerical investigation based on a two-dimensional 3-DoF self-propelled model. Three two-fish formations, namely, tandem, side-by-side, and staggered formation, are investigated to explore the effects of the interactions. The study presents that the passive interactions do bring performance benefits to individuals, but swimmers cannot maintain the benefits for a long time when only relying on the pure passive interactions. The work also discusses different effects induced by the hydrodynamic interactions in some detail, including effects of deflection, wake, phase, attraction and repulsion. Essentially the hydrodynamic effects can be explained by considering time-varying pressure field. Due to the effects, a small disturbance or unbalanced moment may cause a large difference in the swimming directions of individuals in a group. The findings could offer some insights into understanding the schooling swimming mechanism.
Using Robotic Fish to Explore the Hydrodynamic Mechanism of Energy Saving in a Fish School

Abstract:Fish often travel in highly organized schools. One of the most quoted functions of these configurations is energy savings. Here, we verified the hypothesis and explored the mechanism through series of experiments on "schooling" robotic fish, which can undulate actively with flexible body, resembling real fish. We find that, when the school swims in the same spatial arrays as the real one, the energy consumption of the follower mainly depends on the phase difference, a phase angle by which the body wave of the follower leads or lags that of the leader, instead of spatial arrays. Further analysis through flow visualization indicates that the follower saves energy when the phase difference corresponds to the situation that the follower flaps in the same direction of the flow field induced by the vortex dipole shedding by the leader. Using biomimetic robots to verify the biological hypothesis in this paper also sheds new light on the connections among the fields of engineering, physics and biology.
Effect of schooling on flow generated sounds from carangiform swimmers

Abstract:Computational models are used to examine the effect of schooling on flow generated noise of fish swimming using their caudal fins. We simulate the flow as well as the far-field hydrodynamic sound generated by the time-varying pressure loading on these carangiform swimmers. The effect of the number of swimmers in the school, the relative phase of fin flapping of the swimmers, and their spatial arrangement is examined. The simulations indicate that the phase of the fin flapping is a dominant factor in the total sound radiated into the far-field by a group of swimmers. For small schools, a suitable choice of relative phase between the swimmers can significantly reduce the overall intensity of the sound radiated to the far-field. The relative positioning of the swimmers is also shown to have an impact on the total radiated noise. For a larger school, even highly uncorrelated phases of fin movement between the swimmers in the school are very effective in significantly reducing the overall intensity of sound radiated into the far-field. The implications of these findings for fish ethology as well as the design and operation of bioinspired vehicles are discussed.

A review of fish swimming mechanics and behaviour in altered flows

Abstract:Fishes suspended in water are subject to the complex nature of three-dimensional flows. Often, these flows are the result of abiotic and biotic sources that alter otherwise uniform flows, which then have the potential to perturb the swimming motions of fishes. The goal of this review is to highlight key studies that have contributed to a mechanistic and behavioural understanding of how perturbing flows affect fish. Most of our understanding of fish behaviour in turbulence comes from observations of natural conditions in the field and laboratory studies employing controlled perturbations, such as vortices generated in the wake behind simple geometric objects. Laboratory studies have employed motion analysis, flow visualization, electromyography, respirometry and sensory deprecation techniques to evaluate the mechanisms and physiological costs of swimming in altered flows. Studies show that flows which display chaotic and wide fluctuations in velocity can repel fishes, while flows that have a component of predictability can attract fishes. The ability to maintain stability in three-dimensional flows, either actively with powered movements or passively using the posture and intrinsic compliance of the body and fins, plays a large role in whether fish seek out or avoid turbulence. Fish in schools or current-swept habitats can benefit from altered flows using two distinct though not mutually exclusive mechanisms: flow refuging (exploiting regions of reduced flow relative to the earth frame of reference) and vortex capture (harnessing the energy of environmental vortices). Integrating how the physical environment affects organismal biomechanics with the more complex issue of behavioural choice requires consideration beyond simple body motions or metabolic costs. A fundamental link between these two ways of thinking about animal behaviour is how organisms sense and process information from the environment, which determines when locomotor behaviour is initiated and modulated. New data are presented here which show that behaviour changes in altered flows when either the lateral line or vision is blocked, showing that fish rely on multi-modal sensory inputs to negotiate complex flow environments. Integrating biomechanics and sensory biology to understand how fish swim in turbulent flow at the organismal level is necessary to better address population-level questions in the fields of fisheries management and ecology.
Various and Orderly Formations in the Hydrodynamic Schooling of Multiple Flapping Swimmers

Abstract:The fluid mechanics underlying the collective motion of fish schools and bird flocks still lack full understanding. In this paper, the collective motion of multiple asynchronous flapping foils is numerically studied. It is found that various and orderly formations are achieved by multiple foils only via hydrodynamic interactions. Three distinct states have been verified according to the equilibrium distance between adjacent foils, i.e., the sparse state, the compact state, and the combined state. The “head goose effect” is found in the combined state, and the significant speed enhancement can be observed in both the compact and combined states, except when the first subgroup of the combined group is isolated. The obvious energy savings can be observed in most cases examined in the current work, no matter which state occurs. Moreover, for a given phase difference, the compact group has the highest propulsive efficiency, while the sparse group has the lowest. In addition, the fluid mechanics by which the multiple-foil system achieves speed enhancement and energy savings are analyzed. The results obtained here may shed some light on understanding the collective motion of fish schools and bird flocks.
Spontaneous Response of a Self-Organized Fish School to a Predator

Abstract:While the collective movements of fish schools evading predators in nature are complex, they can be fundamentally represented by simplified mathematical models. Here we develop a numerical model, which considers self-propelled particles subject to phenomenological behavioural rules and the hydrodynamic interactions between individuals. We introduce a predator in this model, to study the spontaneous response of a group of simulated fish to the threat. A self-organized fish school with a milling pattern is considered, which was expected to be efficient to evade the threat of predators. Four different attack tactics are adopted by the predator. We find that the simulated fish form transiently smaller structures as some prey individuals split from the main group, but eventually they will re-organize, sometimes into sub groups when the simulated predator approaches the fish school unidirectionally or take a reciprocating action. As the predator is programmed to target the centroid, the school ends in a gradually enlarging circle. For the fourth tactic, as the predator chases its nearest prey, the fish school's response varies with the predator's delay factor. Moreover, the average speed of the group and the distance between individuals have also been studied, both demonstrating that the fish school is able to respond spontaneously to the predator's invasion. We demonstrate that the currently adopted model can predict prey-predator interactions.
Learning to school in the presence of hydrodynamic interactions

Abstract:Schooling, an archetype of collective behaviour, emerges from the interactions of fish responding to sensory information mediated by their aqueous environment. A fundamental and largely unexplored question in fish schooling concerns the role of hydrodynamics. Here, we investigate this question by modelling swimmers as vortex dipoles whose interactions are governed by the Biot–Savart law. When we enhance these dipoles with behavioural rules from classical agent-based models, we find that they do not lead robustly to schooling because of flow-mediated interactions. We therefore propose to use swimmers equipped with adaptive decision-making that adjust their gaits through a reinforcement learning algorithm in response to nonlinearly varying hydrodynamic loads. We demonstrate that these swimmers can maintain their relative position within a formation by adapting their strength and school in a variety of prescribed geometrical arrangements. Furthermore, we identify schooling patterns that minimize the individual and collective swimming effort, through an evolutionary optimization. The present work suggests that the adaptive response of individual swimmers to flow-mediated interactions is critical in fish schooling.

Abstract:Abstract Many animals in nature travel in groups either for protection, survival, or endurance. Among these, certain species do so under the burden of aero/hydrodynamic loads, which incites questions as to the significance of the multi-body fluid-mediated interactions that are inherent to collective flying/swimming. Prime examples of such creatures are fish, which are commonly seen traveling in highly organized groups of large numbers. Indeed, over the years, there have been numerous attempts to examine hydrodynamic interactions among self-propelled fish-like swimmers. Though many have studied this phenomenon, their motivations have varied from understanding animal behavior to extracting universal fluid dynamical principles and transplanting them into engineering applications. The approaches utilized to carry out these investigations include theoretical and computational analyses, field observations, and experiments using various abstractions of biological fish. Here, we compile representative investigations focused on the collective hydrodynamics of fish-like swimmers. The selected body of works are reviewed in the context of their methodologies and findings, so as to draw parallels, reveal previously unnoticed associations, contrast differences, and highlight open questions.

Mapping Spatial Patterns to Energetic Benefits in Groups of Flow-coupled Swimmers

Abstract:The coordinated motion of animal groups through fluids is thought to reduce the cost of locomotion to individuals in the group. However, the connection between the spatial patterns observed in collectively moving animals and the energetic benefits at each position within the group remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we study the spontaneous emergence of cohesive formations in groups of fish, modeled as flapping foils, all heading in the same direction. We show in pairwise formations and with increasing group size that (1) in side-by-side arrangements, the reciprocal nature of flow coupling results in an equal distribution of energy requirements among all members, with reduction in cost of locomotion for swimmers flapping inphase but an increase in cost for swimmers flapping antiphase, and (2) in inline arrangements, flow coupling is non-reciprocal for all flapping phase, with energetic savings in favor of trailing swimmers, but only up to a finite number of swimmers, beyond which school cohesion and energetic benefits are lost at once. We explain these findings mechanistically and we provide efficient diagnostic tools for identifying locations in the wake of single and multiple swimmers that offer opportunities for hydrodynamic benefits to aspiring followers. Our results imply a connection between the resources generated by flow physics and social traits that influence greedy and cooperative group behavior.
