Abstract:With the development of wearable and flexible electronic devices, there is an increasing demand for new types of flexible energy storage power supplies. The flexible supercapacitor has the advantages of fast charging and discharging, high power density, long cycle life, good flexibility, and bendability. Therefore, it exhibits great potential for use in flexible electronics. In flexible supercapacitors, graphene materials are often used as electrode materials due to the advantages of their high specific surface area, high conductivity, good mechanical properties, etc. In this review, the classification of flexible electrodes and some common flexible substrates are firstly summarized. Secondly, we introduced the advantages and disadvantages of five graphene-based materials used in flexible supercapacitors, including graphene quantum dots (GQDs), graphene fibers (GFbs), graphene films (GFs), graphene hydrogels (GHs), and graphene aerogels (GAs). Then, we summarized the latest developments in the application of five graphene-based materials for flexible electrodes. Finally, the defects and outlooks of GQDs, GFbs, GFs, GHs, and GAs used in flexible electrodes are given.

Abstract:Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors based on graphene fibers are demonstrated in this study. Surface-deposited oxide nanoparticles are used as pseudo-capacitor electrodes to achieve high capacitance. This supercapacitor electrode has an areal capacitance of 42 mF cm(-2), which is comparable to the capacitance for fiber-based supercapacitors reported to date. During the bending and cycling of the fiber-based supercapacitor, the stability could be maintained without sacrificing the electrochemical performance, which provides a novel and simple way to develop flexible, lightweight and efficient graphene-based devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D) graphene/quasi-two-dimensional inorganic materials have been widely explored for construction of energyrelated applications. Catering for rapid development of portable electronic devices, energy storage devices with ultra-thin and high flexibility are urgently needed. Very recently, planar supercapacitor with novel configurations has been rapidly developed as important energy storage devices. In this regard, the assembled thin film of 2D graphene and quasi-2D graphene analogues acted as the vital role for the planar configurations as well as the enhanced performances in the construction of planar energy storage device. This review summarized the construction concept of flexible supercapacitors in all-solid-state based on 2D graphene and quasi-2D graphene analogues. We also surveyed how to select quasi-2D graphene analogues with high electrochemical properties, and even how to use the synergic advantages of hybrid structure for further performance enhancement of planar supercapacitors. Recent progresses and possible future applications on planar supercapacitors were also reviewed and outlooked.

Abstract:Owing to the rapidly growing market for flexible electronics, there is an urgent demand to develop flexible energy storage devices. Flexible supercapacitors have received much attention due to their good flexibility, fast charge/discharge rate and long lifecycle times. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene have good mechanical properties, which make them suitable for flexible supercapacitors. Based on different nanostructures of CNTs and graphene, we summarized the recent progress in CNTs- and graphene-based flexible supercapacitors with a brief description of the basic principles for evaluating their performance. Special emphasis was given to fabrication methods, capacitive performance and electrode configurations of different flexible supercapacitors. Furthermore, the remaining challenges and future research directions for CNTs- and graphene-based flexible supercapacitors have also been discussed.

Abstract:The progress of flexible/wearable electronic devices with multi-functionality has stimulated the rapid development of the matching power supply devices. Flexible supercapacitors with high electrochemical performance and mechanical flexibility are considered as attractive technologies to power flexible electronics and have been studied intensively. Carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotube, graphene, and their composites, possess unprecedented physical/chemical properties and exhibit great potential for use in flexible supercapacitors. In this review, the recent progress of state-of-the-art flexible supercapacitors using advanced carbon nanomaterials is expounded comprehensively and systematically, the topic covered the micro/nano-structure control, macroscopic morphologies design, property optimization and application of carbon nanomaterials. Based on the current advances, the challenges and prospects of carbon nanomaterials applied in flexible supercapacitors are outlined and highlighted. As last, the matching between the characters of carbon nanomaterials, construction of flexible supercapacitors and fabrication technologies are put forward.

Wet-spun Poly(ionic Liquid)-Graphene Hybrid Fibers for High Performance All-Solid-state Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:It is crucial to develop flexible and wearable electronic devices that have attracted tremendous interest due to their merits on compactness, flexibility and high capacitive properties. Herein we report the continuously ordered macroscopic poly(ionic liquid)-graphene fibers by wet spinning method via liquid crystal assembly for supercapacitor application. The fabricated all-solid-state supercapacitors exhibited a high areal capacitance (268.2 mF cm(-2)) and volumetric capacitance (204.6 F cm(-3)) with an outstanding areal energy density (9.31 mu Wh cm(-2)) and volumetric energy density (8.28 mWh cm (-3)). The fiber supercapacitors demonstrated exceptional cycle life for straight electrodes of about 10,000 cycles (94.2% capacitance retention) and flexibility at different angles (0 degrees, 45 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees) along with a good flexible cycling stability after 6000 cycles (92.7% capacitance retention). To date, such a novel poly (ionic liquid)-graphene fiber supercapacitors would be a new platform in real-time flexible electronics. Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have been considered a means of energy storage in portable electronic devices due to their acceptable specific capacitance and power density, high charge-discharge speed, and great flexibility. In this review, the results of recent studies were categorized from the point of view of the method used in the synthesis of nanocomposites, morphological studies, and electrochemical results. The importance of getting to know more about the synthesis of graphene-based materials used in flexible supercapacitors electrodes becomes apparent when the goal of the research is industrialization and scaling up. In this regard, the more comfortable synthesis and the lower cost of the material used caused the lower price of our final product. As well as, analyses related to the investigation of morphology will be very important from two aspects, the possibility of obtaining a correct view of the structure of the proposed materials and their capability for flexibility. Finally, the specific capacitance, energy density, power density, and cyclic life of a flexible supercapacitor were determined through electrochemical tests such as cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials are widely explored as the active electrode materials for energy storage and conversion devices, especially supercapacitors (SCs). Their high electrochemically active surface area, hierarchical porous structure, excellent compressibility, and high mechanical stability, as well as excellent conductivity, are the critical merits for providing robust and facilitative channels for charge transport. Various studies have explored many possible ways to utilize the maximum potential of graphene-based SC electrodes, and graphene research is booming, given its exceptional charge storage properties. This review focuses on the class-specific electrode materials for different types of SCs, followed by the classification and critical review of graphene-based electrodes reported in the past five years. The current challenges in the field have also been discussed with a focus on promising pathways for future research.

Abstract:We present a novel approach for hierarchical fabrication of high-performance, all-solid-state, flexible supercapacitors from environmentally friendly all-carbon materials. Three-dimensional carbon nanotube/carbon cloth network (CNT/CC) is used as a conductive, flexible and free-standing scaffold for the electro-deposition of highly N/O co-doped graphene quantum dots to form the high-activity, all-carbon electrodes. The hierarchical structure of the CNT/CC network with high electrical conductivity and high surface area provides improved conductive pathways for the efficient activation of GQDs with high pseudocapacitance and electrical double layer capacitance. The obtained N-O-GQD/CNT/CC electrodes for all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors exhibit an ultrahigh areal capacitance of up to 461 mF cm (2) at a current density of 0.5 mA cm (2), while keeping high rate and cyclic performances. This work highlights the great potential of highly active GQDs in the construction of high-performance flexible energy-storage devices.(C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Flexible solid‐state supercapacitors (FSSCs) have garnered significant attention due to their advantages, including lightness, adaptability, enhanced safety, and extensive operational potential windows. These features make them highly suitable as energy storage devices for the next generation of portable and flexible electronics. The recent surge in the development and remarkable breakthroughs in novel wearable electronics have further propelled research into FSSCs. Nevertheless, several pressing issues need to be addressed in this field, including synthesizing flexible electrode materials with superior electrochemical energy storage capabilities, enhancing the physicochemical properties of solid gel polymer electrolytes, particularly in extreme environments, and ensuring effective contact between electrodes and gel electrolytes. This paper presents an overview of the latest advancements in FSSCs, focusing on electrode materials and electrolytes. Additionally, it delves into the current challenges and future prospects of FSSCs.

Abstract:Supercapacitors, with ultrahigh power density, superior rate capability, long-term cyclability, and exceptional safety, are regarded as one highly competitive candidate of electrochemical energy storage devices, filling the gap between batteries and conventional capacitors. Despite of tremendous effort, elaborated screening of high-performance electrode materials, e.g., graphene, is still intensively required. In this review, we describe the most recent progress in the research and development of graphene-based materials for high-performance and new-concept supercapacitors for the targeted applications in next-generation and smart electronics. First, the design and fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors, including electrical double layer capacitors, pseudocapacitors and hybrid supercapacitors, were summarized in term of the charge storage mechanism. Second, new-concept supercapacitors with multiple functionalities of high-voltage, fiber-shape, microscale and shape-diversity in order to fulfill the requirements of future electronics are reviewed. Accordingly, special emphasis is given to the structure-dependent-performance effects of pores, hybridization, dimensionalities of graphene-based materials on performance of supercapacitors, and tremendous potential of graphene-based planar micro-supercapacitors for the direct seamlessly integration with versatile micro-electronics. Finally, perspectives and challenges of graphene-based supercapacitors are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The emergence of flexible electronic devices has put forward new requirements for their power sources, and fabrication of flexible supercapacitors with excellent electrochemical performances will be a new approach to fulfill this demand. As promising candidates for high performance flexible supercapacitors, one-dimensional nanostructured materials have attracted increasing interest owing to their high specific area, efficient electron transport, and excellent mechanical strength, thus enabling them to be flexible supercapacitors with some remarkable properties, such as high energy densities, superb power densities, and great flexibilities. Moreover, based on their application demands, flexible supercapacitors can be designed into different structures, including sandwich-type, wire-shaped, and chip-type. In this regard, one-dimensional nanostructured material-based flexible supercapacitors exhibit great promise for next-generation flexible electronic devices. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in one-dimensional nanostructured material based flexible supercapacitors. The challenges and prospects of flexible supercapacitors are also discussed.

Abstract:Increasing power and energy demands for next-generation portable and flexible electronics such as roll-up displays, photovoltaic cells, and wearable devices have stimulated intensive efforts to explore flexible, lightweight and environmentally friendly energy storage devices. Flexible solid-state supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted increasing interest because they can provide substantially higher specific/volumetric energy density compared to conventional capacitors. Additionally, flexible solid-state SCs are typically small in size, highly reliable, light-weight, easy to handle, and have a wide range of operation temperatures. In this regard, solid-state SCs hold great promise as new energy storage devices for flexible and wearable electronics. In this article, we review recent achievements in the design, fabrication and characterization of flexible solid-state SCs. Moreover, we also discuss the current challenges and future opportunities for the development of high-performance flexible solid-state SCs.

Abstract:The rise of personalized flexible electronics has promoted the rapid development of flexible supercapacitors due to their long service life, fast charging-discharging rates and safe operation. Different from the traditional flexible supercapacitors, the all-in-one integrated flexible supercapacitors are more resistant to deformation and lower interface resistance, which have a broader application prospect in the field of flexible electronics. This review briefly summarizes the preparation methods and electrochemical properties of some typical all-in-one supercapacitors, represented by planar and fibrous structures in recent years. Firstly, the basic understanding of traditional flexible supercapacitors and all-in-one integrated flexible supercapacitors, and the key parameters of the performance of flexible supercapacitors are introduced. Subsequently, the hydrogel matrix all-in-one supercapacitors with different functional characteristics (stretchable, self-healing and compressible) and the nonhydrogel matrix (separator, flexible membrane) all-in-one supercapacitors are discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and future development of flexible supercapacitors are considered.

Abstract:Flexible solid-state supercapacitors are of considerable interest as mobile power supply for future flexible electronics. Graphene or carbon nanotubes based thin films have been used to fabricate flexible solid-state supercapacitors with high gravimetric specific capacitances (80-200 F/g), but usually with a rather low overall or areal specific capacitance (3-50 mF/cm(2)) due to the ultrasmall electrode thickness (typically a few micrometers) and ultralow mass loading, which is not desirable for practical applications. Here we report the exploration of a three-dimensional (3D) graphene hydrogel for the fabrication of high-performance solid-state flexible supercapacitors. With a highly interconnected 3D network structure, graphene hydrogel exhibits exceptional electrical conductivity and mechanical robustness to make it an excellent material for flexible energy storage devices. Our studies demonstrate that flexible supercapacitors with a 120 μm thick graphene hydrogel thin film can exhibit excellent capacitive characteristics, including a high gravimetric specific capacitance of 186 F/g (up to 196 F/g for a 42 μm thick electrode), an unprecedented areal specific capacitance of 372 mF/cm(2) (up to 402 mF/cm(2) for a 185 μm thick electrode), low leakage current (10.6 μA), excellent cycling stability, and extraordinary mechanical flexibility. This study demonstrates the exciting potential of 3D graphene macrostructures for high-performance flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based hydrogels have attracted great interest for applying in supercapcacitors electrodes, owing to their intriguing properties that combine the structural interconnectivities and the outstanding properties of graphene. However, the pristine graphene hydrogel can not satisfy the high-performance demands, especial in high specific capacitance. Consequently, novel graphene-based composite hydrogels with increased electrochemical properties have been developed. In this mini review, a brief summary of recent progress in the research of the three-dimensional graphene-based composite hydrogel for flexible supercapacitors electrodes materials is presented. The latest progress in the graphene-based composite hydrogel consisting of graphene/metal, graphene/polymer, and atoms doped graphene is discussed. Furthermore, future perspectives and challenges in graphene-based composite hydrogel for supercapacitor electrodes are also expressed.
