Abstract:The generation of large electrostrain in piezoelectric ceramics is usually ascribed to microstructural changes, including electric field-induced phase transitions, defective dipoles, and polar nanoscale regions. Nevertheless, the key mechanisms underlying large strains are complex and controversial. Herein, a composite piezoelectric ceramic was fabricated by combining bismuth ferrite-barium titanate (BFO-BT) with barium titanate (BT). A giant electrostrain of 1.06 % was achieved in the (BFO-BT)- x BT composite ceramics. The formation of numerous heterogeneous structural interfaces in the composite ceramics, resulting from chemical heterogeneity and hybrid domain structures between the BFO-BT and BT phases, change the local stress and internal bias electric field, thereby leading to a giant electrostrain. Our findings suggest that, in a manner analogous to the defective dipole design, the heterogeneous structure also play a non-negligible role in the generation of large strains via alternating the internal bias electric fields in piezoelectric materials.
