Overview of Natural Fiber-Based Packaging Materials

Abstract:One of the key elements of sustainability of humankind is the usage ratio of nature-based materials as opposed to synthetic products. This is very significant in the field of packaging materials, as people use and consume increasing amount of packaging materials every day. Packaging materials are usually produced from petroleum-based sources using non-degradable materials however, this has a negative impact on sustainability and the environment. It is important to replace them with natural-based materials, therefore cellulose is receiving more and more attention as a raw. Much research has been done for developing new nature-based packaging materials and technologies for replacement of synthetic materials. Recent articles review much research for developing methodologies, materials and composite materials for reducing environmental pollution. This paper reviews how natural-based packaging materials have spread and how it is used in many areas thanks to their favorable environmental effects. It summarizes the raw materials, additives and coatings of natural-based packaging materials, and it also addresses end-of-life options. The paper concerns also the most sensitive area of packaging is food packaging. What problem does this paper attempt to address?

This paper mainly discusses packaging materials based on natural fibers, aiming to address environmental protection and sustainability issues. With the increasingly significant negative impact of plastic packaging materials on the environment, people have begun to seek biodegradable and renewable alternatives. Cellulose, as a natural material, has received more and more attention. The article reviews the development of natural packaging materials, including fiber and paper-based packaging, and highlights their potential in reducing environmental pollution. In addition, the paper also discusses the raw materials, additives, coatings, and disposal options for these materials. In particular, the paper mentions the application of smart packaging in food packaging, which is a promising field that can replace artificial materials and provide additional functions. Finally, the article discusses different types of natural fiber sources, such as agricultural waste and non-wood fibers, and their applications in papermaking, while also pointing out challenges faced when using these materials, such as mechanical performance and biodegradability issues.
