Abstract:The scientific and societal importance of short-term changes in the thermosphere-ionosphere (T-I) system has highlighted the need to advance our understanding of short-term changes in the lower-middle thermosphere. This need has become increasingly important with the rapid increase in the number of low-earth-orbiting satellites. Geomagnetic activity can dramatically increase thermospheric temperatures and, almost equivalently, thermospheric densities and satellite drag. However, specification of drag during quiet periods may also be problematic when the number of satellites is large. While temperatures and densities at higher altitudes (>~250 km) have been extensively studied and modeled, there is a knowledge gap for densities at lower-middle thermosphere altitudes (< ~200 km). At these lower altitudes the primary sources of thermospheric density data, in situ and drag data from satellites, are rarely available. Remote sensing of temperatures and composition by NASA's Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission can help fill this gap The GOLD mission produces disk images of neutral temperature, which is key parameter for understanding neutral density in the lower-middle thermosphere. However, since disk images of the temperature have become available only since the launch of GOLD, some researchers may be unfamiliar with the current observational capability that is relevant to the data interpretation. Also, other temperature retrieval techniques than GOLD's have been published. Comparisons indicate that GOLD's technique gives the most consistent results and yields the lowest uncertainties. This paper discusses both temperature retrieval techniques and issues in interpreting GOLD's images of temperatures.

Abstract:After days of intense solar activity, active region AR3664 launched seven CMEs toward Earth producing an extreme G5 geomagnetic storm commencing at 17:05 UT on 10 May 2024. The storm impacted power grids, disrupted precision navigational systems used by farming equipment, and generated aurora seen around the globe. The storm produced remarkable effects on composition, temperature, and dynamics in the Earth's thermosphere that were observed by NASA's Global‐scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission and are reported here for the first time. We use synoptic disk images of ΣO/N2 and neutral temperature (at ∼160 km) measured by GOLD to directly link dynamics resulting from the storm with dramatic changes in thermospheric composition and temperature. We observe a heretofore unseen spatial morphology simultaneously in ΣO/N2, neutral temperature, and total electron content. Equator‐to‐pole temperature differences reach 400 K with high latitude peak neutral temperatures near 160 km exceeding 1400 K.

Abstract:Themospheric conditions during a minor geomagnetic event of 3 and 4 February 2022 has been investigated using disk temperature (Tdisk) observations from Global‐scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission and model simulations. GOLD observed that the Tdisk increases by more than 60 K during the storm event when compared with pre‐storm quiet days. A comparison of the Tdisk with effective temperatures (Teff, i.e., a weighted average based on airglow emission layer) from Mass Spectrometer Incoherent Scatter radar version 2 (MSIS2) and Multiscale Atmosphere‐Geospace Environment (MAGE) models shows that MAGE outperforms MSIS2 during this particular event. MAGE underestimates the Teff by about 2%, whereas MSIS2 underestimates it by 7%. As temperature enhancements lead to an expansion of the thermosphere and resulting density changes, the value of the temperature enhancement observed by GOLD can be utilized to find a GOLD equivalent MSIS2 (GOLD‐MSIS) simulation—from a set of MSIS2 runs obtained by varying geomagnetic ap index values. From the MSIS‐GOLD run we found that the thermospheric density enhancement varies with altitude from 15% (at 150) to 80% (at 500 km). Independent simulations from the MAGE model also show a comparable enhancement in neutral density. These results suggest that even a modest storm could impact the thermospheric densities significantly and GOLD data can be used to improve the empirical and assimilative models of the thermosphere.

Abstract:Spatially-resolved images of debris disks are necessary to determine disk morphological properties and the scattering phase function (SPF) which quantifies the brightness of scattered light as a function of phase angle. Current high-contrast imaging instruments have successfully resolved several dozens of debris disks around other stars, but few studies have investigated trends in the scattered-light, resolved population of debris disks in a uniform and consistent manner. We have combined Karhunen-Loeve Image Projection (KLIP) with radiative-transfer disk forward modeling in order to obtain the highest quality image reductions and constrain disk morphological properties of eight debris disks imaged by the Gemini Planet Imager at H-band with a consistent and uniformly-applied approach. In describing the scattering properties of our models, we assume a common SPF informed from solar system dust scattering measurements and apply it to all systems. We identify a diverse range of dust density properties among the sample, including critical radius, radial width, and vertical width. We also identify radially narrow and vertically extended disks that may have resulted from substellar companion perturbations, along with a tentative positive trend in disk eccentricity with relative disk width. We also find that using a common SPF can achieve reasonable model fits for disks that are axisymmetric and asymmetric when fitting models to each side of the disk independently, suggesting that scattering behavior from debris disks may be similar to Solar System dust.

However, the model underestimates the compositional changes. GOLD observation show a &#931;O/N2 column density ratio enhancement of ~ 80 % near the totality, but the model predicts ~ 10 % enhancement. This indicates that there are inadequacies in current modeling capabilities for thermospheric changes during an eclipse. GOLD&#8217;s thermospheric measurements provide an important, new test of the models. We will present detailed data-model comparisons of measurements versus modeling results for the July 2nd eclipse.

Abstract:The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) has excelled in imaging debris disks in the near-infrared. The GPI Exoplanet Survey imaged 24 debris disks in polarized H-band light, while other programs observed half of these disks in polarized J and/or K1 bands. Using these data, we present a uniform analysis of the morphology of each disk to find asymmetries suggestive of perturbations, particularly those due to planet–disk interactions. The multiwavelength surface brightness, disk color, and geometry permit the identification of any asymmetries such as warps or disk offsets from the central star. We find that 19 of the disks in this sample exhibit asymmetries in surface brightness, disk color, disk geometry, or a combination of the three, suggesting that for this sample, perturbations, as seen in scattered light, are common. The relationship between these perturbations and potential planets in the system is discussed. We also explore correlations among stellar temperatures, ages, disk properties, and observed perturbations. We find significant trends between the vertical aspect ratio and the stellar temperature, disk radial extent, and the dust grain size distribution power law, q. We also confirm a trend between the disk color and stellar effective temperature, where the disk becomes increasingly red/neutral with increasing temperature. Such results have important implications for the evolution of debris disk systems around stars of various spectral types.

Abstract:Circumstellar disks are not only a byproduct of star formation, but are also the place where planets form and migrate. The dominant gas-phase constituent of disks early in their evolution is H2, and its lifetime in the disk limits the time available for gas giant planet formation and migration. A number of mechanisms have been proposed to remove gas, including photoevaporation in the presence of the stellar X-ray, EUV, and FUV radiation field, but the relative importance of these different components and the point in disk evolution where they become significant remain uncertain. Some models predict enhanced evaporation of gas in the outer disk once the inner portions of the disk have begun to clear. One such system is the T Tauri star GM Aur which hosts a large disk with an r=20 AU central cavity. We have carried out the first high-contrast FUV imaging of this star+disk using HST ACS/SBC and report the detection of the inner 1 (140 AU) of the disk in the FUV and the discovery of a roughly cylindrical structure 90 AU in radius and extending 200 AU orthogonal to the disk, aligned with the previously reported red, polar lobes. The structure is brightest at wavelengths where there are numerous fluorescent molecular hydrogen transitions, both in our imagery and in an archival HST/STIS long-slit spectrum. The cylinder is marginally detected in the ACS/SBC F165LP band indicating that there is some sub-0.2 micron-sized dust entrained in it, but is not detected in ACS/SBC F122M imagery. The radial scale of the footprint of the cylinder on the disk and the absence of atomic emission lines associated with the structure exclude a conventional jet, but are consistent with a photoevaporation-driven outflow. We compare the properties of this outflow with predictions of X-ray, EUV, and FUV-driven disk winds.

Spiral excitation in protoplanetary disks through gap-edge illumination: Three-temperature radiation hydrodynamics and NIR image modeling

Abstract:The advent of high-resolution, near-infrared (NIR) instruments such as VLT/SPHERE and Gemini/GPI has helped uncover a wealth of substructure in planet-forming disks, including large, prominent spiral arms in MWC 758, SAO 206462, and V1247 Ori. In the classical theory of disk-planet interaction, these arms are consistent with Lindblad-resonance driving by companions of multiple Jupiter masses. Despite improved detection limits, evidence for massive bodies like this in connection with spiral substructure has been inconclusive. In search of an alternative explanation, we used the PLUTO code to run 3D hydrodynamical simulations with two comparatively low planet masses (Saturn mass and Jupiter mass) and two thermodynamic prescriptions (three-temperature radiation hydrodynamics, and the more traditional beta -cooling) in a low-mass disk. In the radiative cases, an $m = 2$ mode, potentially attributable to the interaction of stellar radiation with gap-edge asymmetries, creates an azimuthal pressure gradient, which in turn gives rise to prominent spiral arms in the upper layers of the disk. Monte Carlo radiative transfer post-processing with RADMC3D revealed that in NIR scattered light, these gap-edge spirals are significantly more prominent than the traditional Lindblad spirals for planets in the mass range we tested. Our results demonstrate that even intermediate-mass protoplanets, which are less detectable, but more ubiquitous than super-Jupiters, are capable of indirectly inducing large-scale spiral disk features, and underscore the importance of including radiation physics in any efforts to reproduce observations.

Abstract:We describe the target selection algorithm for the low latitude disk portion of the LAMOST Pilot Survey, which aims to test systems in preparation for the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. We use the PPMXL astrometric catalog, which provides positions, proper motions, B/R/I magnitudes (mostly) from USNO-B and J/H/Ks from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) as well. We chose eight plates along the Galactic plane, in the region 0 degrees < alpha < 67 degrees and 42 degrees < delta < 59 degrees, which cover 22 known open clusters with a range of ages. Adjacent plates may have some small overlapping area. Each plate covers an area of 2.5 degrees in radius, with its central star (for the Shack-Hartmann guider) brighter than 8th magnitude. For each plate, we create an input catalog in the magnitude range 11.3 < I-mag < 16.3 and B-mag available from PPMXL. The stars are selected to satisfy the requirements of the fiber positioning system and have a uniform distribution in the I vs. B - I color-magnitude diagram. Our final input catalog consists of 12 000 objects on each of eight plates that are observable during the winter observing season from the Xing long Station of the National Astronomical Observatory of China.

Abstract:Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, impacting planet formation within the disks. We report JWST and Atacama Large Millimetere Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula. Emission lines are detected from the PDR; modelling their kinematics and excitation allows us to constrain the physical conditions within the gas. We quantify the mass-loss rate induced by the FUV irradiation, finding it is sufficient to remove gas from the disk in less than a million years. This is rapid enough to affect giant planet formation in the disk.

Monte Carlo radiative transfer (MCRT) post-processing with RADMC3D reveals that in near-infrared scattered light, these gap-edge spirals are significantly more prominent than the traditional Lindblad spirals for planets in the mass range tested. Our results demonstrate that even intermediate-mass protoplanets -- less detectable, but more ubiquitous, than super-Jupiters -- are capable of indirectly inducing large-scale spiral disk features, and underscore the importance of including radiation physics in efforts to reproduce observations.

Abstract:The gaseous mass of protoplanetary disks is a fundamental quantity in planet formation. The presence of gas is necessary to assemble planetesimals, it determines timescales of giant planet birth, and it is an unknown factor for a wide range of properties of planet formation, from chemical abundances (X/H) to the mass efficiency of planet formation. The gas mass obtained from traditional tracers, such as dust thermal continuum and CO isotopologues, are now known to have significant (1 - 2 orders of magnitude) discrepancies. Emission from the isotopologue of H2, hydrogen deuteride (HD), offers an alternative measurement of the disk gas mass. Of all of the regions of the spectrum, the far-infrared stands out in that orders of magnitude gains in sensitivity can be gleaned by cooling a large aperture telescope to 8 K. Such a facility can open up a vast new area of the spectrum to exploration. One of the primary benefits of this far-infrared revolution would be the ability to survey hundreds of planet-forming disks in HD emission to derive their gaseous masses. For the first time, we will have statistics on the gas mass as a function of evolution, tracing birth to dispersal as a function of stellar spectral type. These measurements have broad implications for our understanding of the time scale during which gas is available to form giant planets, the dynamical evolution of the seeds of terrestrial worlds, and the resulting chemical composition of pre-planetary embryos carrying the elements needed for life. Measurements of the ground-state line of HD requires a space-based observatory operating in the far-infrared at 112 microns.

A thermodynamic criterion for the formation of Circumplanetary Disks

Abstract:The formation of circumplanetary disks is central to our understanding of giant planet formation, influencing their growth rate during the post-runaway phase and observability while embedded in protoplanetary disks. We use 3D global multifluid radiation hydrodynamics simulations with the FARGO3D code to define the thermodynamic conditions that enable circumplanetary disk formation around Jovian planets on wide orbits. Our simulations include stellar irradiation, viscous heating, static mesh refinement, and active calculation of opacity based on evolving dust fluids. We find a necessary condition for the formation of circumplanetary disks in terms of a mean cooling time: when the cooling time is at least one order of magnitude shorter than the orbital time scale, the specific angular momentum of the gas is nearly Keplerian at scales of $R_{\rm{Hill}}/3$. We show that the inclusion of multifluid dust dynamics favors rotational support because dust settling produces an anisotropic opacity distribution that favors rapid cooling. In all our models with radiation hydrodynamics, specific angular momentum decreases as time evolves in agreement with the formation of an inner isentropic envelope due to compressional heating. The isentropic envelope can extend up to $R_{\rm{Hill}}/3$ and shows negligible rotational support. Thus, our results imply that young gas giant planets may host spherical isentropic envelopes, rather than circumplanetary disks.
