Abstract:From the study of long-range-interacting systems to the simulation of gauge fields, open-shell lanthanide atoms with their large magnetic moment and narrow optical transitions open novel directions in the field of ultracold quantum gases. As for other atomic species, the magnetooptical trap (MOT) is the working horse of experiments but its operation is challenging, due to the large electronic spin of the atoms. Here we present an experimental study of narrow-line dysprosium MOTs. We show that the combination of radiation pressure and gravitational forces leads to a spontaneous polarization of the electronic spin. The spin composition is measured using a Stern–Gerlach separation of spin levels, revealing that the gas becomes almost fully spinpolarized for large laser frequency detunings. In this regime, we reach the optimal operation of the MOT, with samples of typically 3 108 ́ atoms at a temperature of 15 μK. The spin polarization reduces the complexity of the radiative cooling description, which allows for a simple model accounting for our measurements. We also measure the rate of density-dependent atom losses, finding good agreement with a model based on light-induced Van der Waals forces. A minimal two-body loss rate 2 10 11 b ~ ́ cm s is reached in the spin-polarized regime. Our results constitute a benchmark for the experimental study of ultracold gases of magnetic lanthanide atoms.

Abstract:An extension of the Maxwell-Faraday law of electromagnetic induction to optical frequencies requires spatially appropriate materials and optical beams to create resonances and excitations with curl. Here we employ cylindrical vector beams with azimuthal polarization to create electric fields that selectively drive magnetic responses in dielectric core-metal nanoparticle "satellite" nanostructures. These optical frequency magnetic resonances are induced in materials that do not possess spin or orbital angular momentum. Multipole expansion analysis of the scattered fields obtained from electrodynamics simulations show that the excitation with azimuthally polarized beams selectively enhances magnetic vs electric dipole resonances by nearly 100-fold in experiments. Multipolar resonances (e.g., quadrupole and octupole) are enhanced 5-fold by focused azimuthally versus linearly polarized beams. We also selectively excite electric multipolar resonances in the same identical nanostructures with radially polarized light. This work opens new opportunities for spectroscopic investigation and control of "dark modes", Fano resonances, and magnetic modes in nanomaterials and engineered metamaterials.

Abstract:Controlling quantum materials with light is of fundamental and technological importance. By utilizing the strong coupling of light and matter in optical cavities (1-3), recent studies were able to modify some of their most defining features (4-6). In this work, we study the magneto-optical properties of a van der Waals magnet that supports strong coupling of photons and excitons even in the absence of external cavity mirrors. In this material - the layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr - emergent light-matter hybrids called polaritons are shown to significantly increase the spectral bandwidth of correlations between the magnetic, electronic, and optical properties, enabling largely tunable optical responses to applied magnetic fields and magnons. Our results highlight the importance of exciton-photon self-hybridization in van der Waals magnets and motivate novel directions for the manipulation of quantum material properties by strong light-matter coupling.

Abstract:We review recent theoretical developments on the nanoscale radiative heat transfer in magneto-optical many-particle systems. We discuss in detail the circular heat flux, the giant magneto-resistance effect, the persistent heat current, and the thermal Hall effect for light in such systems within the framework of fluctuational electrodynamics, using the dipolar approximation. We show that the directionality of heat flux in such systems can in principle be understood by analyzing the competing contributions to the heat exchange of the magnetic-field-dependent dipolar resonances of quantum numbers m = +1 and m = -1. Some potential applications of these effects to thermal and magnetic sensing are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Dynamic toroidal dipoles, a distinguished class of fundamental electromagnetic sources, receive increasing interest and participate in fascinating electrodynamic phenomena and sensing applications. As described in the literature, the radiative nature of dynamic toroidal dipoles is sometimes confounded, intermixing with static toroidal dipoles and plasmonic dark modes. Here, we elucidate this issue and provide proof-of-principle experiments exclusively on the radiation behavior of dynamic toroidal moments. Optical toroidal modes in plasmonic heptamer nanocavities are analyzed by electron energy loss spectroscopy and energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy supported by finite-difference time-domain numerical calculations. Additionally, their corresponding radiation behaviors are experimentally investigated by means of cathodoluminescence. The observed contrasting behaviors of a single dynamic toroidal dipole mode and an antiparallel toroidal dipole pair mode are discussed and elucidated. Our findings further clarify the electromagnetic properties of dynamic toroidal dipoles and serve as important guidance for the use of toroidal dipole moments in future applications.

Transient dynamics of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in the presence of transverse magnetic field

Abstract:Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation is studied under non-equilibrium conditions. The polarization rotation of linearly polarized light traversing a rubidium vapor cell is observed versus the time-dependent (swept) longitudinal magnetic field in the presence of static transverse magnetic fields. Presence of the transverse fields modifies the character of the observed signals. In particular, for weaker transverse fields, field sweep leads two-harmonic oscillation of the polarization rotation while crossing zero. Unlike the steady-state, it was found that two-frequency oscillations observed in the transient signals, are independent of the transverse-field direction. For stronger transverse fields, the oscillations deteriorate eventually reaching a situation when no-oscillating dynamic signal, with distinct minimum close to zero field, is observed. Experimental results are supported with theoretical analysis based on the density-matrix formalism. The analysis confirms all the features of experimental results while providing an provide intuitive explanation of the observed behavior based on angular-momentum probability surfaces used for density-matrix visualization.

Abstract:We study the electromagnetic radiation by a fermion carrying an electric charge $q$ embedded in a medium rotating with constant angular velocity $\bf\Omega$ parallel or anti-parallel to an external constant magnetic field $\bf B$. We assume that the rotation is "relatively slow"; namely, that the angular velocity $\Omega$ is much smaller than the inverse magnetic length $\sqrt{qB}$. In practice, such angular velocity can be extremely high. The fermion motion is a superposition of two circular motions: one due to its rigid rotation caused by forces exerted by the medium, another due to the external magnetic field. We derive an exact analytical expression for the spectral rate and the total intensity of this type of synchrotron radiation. Our numerical calculations indicate very high sensitivity of the radiation to the angular velocity of rotation. We show that the radiation intensity is strongly enhanced if $q\bf B$ and $\bf \Omega$ point in the opposite directions and is suppressed otherwise.

Abstract:Magnetic -free nonreciprocal optical devices have attracted great attention in recent years. Here, we investigated the magnetic -free polarization rotation of light in an atom vapor cell. Two mechanisms of magnetic -free nonreciprocity have been realized in ensembles of hot atoms, including electromagnetically induced transparency and optically -induced magnetization. For a linearly polarized input probe light, a rotation angle up to 86.4 degrees has been realized with external control and pump laser powers of 10 mW and is mainly attributed to the optically -induced magnetization effect. Our demonstration offers a new approach to realize nonreciprocal devices, which can be applied to solid-state atom ensembles and may be useful in photonic integrated circuits. Abstract:It is well known that one can create a magnetic field by passing a DC or AC electric current through a coil of conductor (i.e., a wire); a phenomenon described by the Maxwell-Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. NMR or ESR (nuclear magnetic resonance or electron spin resonance) spectroscopies involve the interaction of a spin (nuclear or electron, respectively) with a magnetic field. Mathematically, these phenomena can be understood as the curl of the electric field (i.e., the current or spin) producing a (time varying) magnetic field or vise versa. Thus, one should also be able to induce a magnetic response in nano- and meso-scale materials by exploiting Maxwell-Faraday’s law of induction through the design of the structure, by employing an electric field with instantaneous curl or do both to produce an instantaneous circulating (or displacement) current. Here we employ cylindrical vector beams with azimuthal polarization to create an angular (cylindrical) electric field, and selectively induce a magnetic response in metal nanoparticle-based nanomaterials at optical frequencies. This time-varying magnetic field at optical frequencies is induced in systems that do not possess spin or orbital angular momentum. Moreover, with the vector beam spectroscopy we also selectively drive electric dipole modes by excitation with a radially polarized light, and show that the strength of the electric and magnetic modes can be equal in magnitude in individual metal nano-structures. This work opens new opportunities for selective spectroscopic investigation of “dark modes” and Fano resonances in nanomaterials, metamaterials and control of nanomaterial excitations and dynamics.
Emission of twisted photons by a Dirac electron in a strong magnetic field

Abstract:We study the spontaneous emission of a photon during the transitions between relativistic Landau states of an electron in a constant magnetic field that can reach the Schwinger value of Hc=4.4×109 T . In contrast to the conventional method, in which detection of both the final electron and the photon are implied in a certain basis, here we derive the photon state as it evolves from the process itself. It is shown that the emitted photon state represents a twisted Bessel beam propagating along the field axis with a total angular momentum (TAM) projection onto this axis l−l′ , where l and l′ are the TAM of the initial electron and of the final one, respectively. Thus, the majority of the emitted photons turn out to be twisted, with l−l′≳1 , even when the magnetic field reaches the critical value of H∼Hc . The transitions without a change of the electron angular momentum, l′=l , are possible, yet much less probable. We also compare our findings with those for a spinless charged particle and demonstrate their good agreement for the transitions without change of the electron spin projection even in the critical fields, while the spin-flip transitions are generally suppressed. In addition, we argue that whereas the ambiguous choice of an electron spin operator affects the differential probability of emission, this problem can partially be circumvented for the photon evolved state because it is the electron TAM rather than the spin alone that defines the TAM of the emitted twisted photon. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.036017 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:We examine one of the standard loci for studying electromagnetic wave emission—the radiation from an oscillating electric dipole—in a model in which the electromagnetic sector is modified to include novel CPT - and Lorentz-violating propagation effects involving a preferred axial vector background. We evaluate the vacuum-birefringent radiation fields, including nonperturbative terms where appropriate. In general, the energy momentum carried by the fields in this model is known to have a complicated nonperturbative structure, which cannot be captured by naive power-series expansions in the components of the preferred background vector. Magneto-Electric Response of Quantum Structures Driven by Optical Vector Beams

Abstract:Key advances in the generation and shaping of spatially structured photonic fields both in the near and far field render possible the control of the duration, the phase, and the polarization state of the field distributions. For instance, optical vortices having a structured phase are nowadays routinely generated and exploited for a range of applications. While the light-matter interaction with optical vortices is meanwhile well studied, the distinctive features of the interaction of quantum matter with vector beams, meaning fields with spatially inhomogeneous polarization states, are still to be explored in full detail, which is done here. We analyze the response of atomic and low dimensional quantum structures to irradiation with radially or azimuthally polarized cylindrical vector beams. Striking differences to vortex beams are found: Radially polarized vector beams drive radially breathing charge-density oscillations via electric-type quantum transitions. Azimuthally polarized vector beams do not affect the charge at all but trigger, via a magnetic vector potential a dynamic Aharonov-Bohm effect, meaning a vector-potential driven oscillating magnetic moment. In contrast to vortex beams, no unidirectional currents are generated. Atoms driven by a radially polarized vector beam exhibit angular momentum conserving quadrupole transitions tunable by a static magnetic field, while when excited with azimuthally polarized beam different final-state magnetic sublevels can be accessed.

Abstract:We show that under the presence of a static magnetic field the photon eigen-frequencies of a circular gyromagnetic cylinder experience a splitting that is proportional to the angular momentum density of light at the cylinder surface. Such a splitting of the photonic states is similar to the Zeeman splitting of electronic states in atoms. This leads to some unusual decoupling properties of these non-degenerate photonic angular momentum states, which are demonstrated through numerical simulations.

Abstract:Within the context of spin-related optical phenomena, near-field directionality is generally understood from the viewpoint of the quantum spin Hall effect of light, according to which the transverse spin of surface or guided modes is locked to the propagation direction. Most previous works have been focused on the spin properties of circularly polarized dipolar sources. However, in near-field optics, higher-order multipole sources (e.g., quadrupole, octupole, and so on) might become relevant, so a more in-depth formulation would be highly valuable. Building on the angular-spectrum representation, we provide a general, analytical, and ready-to-use treatment in order to address the near-field directionality of any multipole field, particularizing to the electric quadrupole case. Besides underpinning and upgrading the current framework on spin-dependent directionality, our results may open up interesting perspectives for engineering light-matter coupling at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Abstract A magnon, the collective excitation of ordered spins, can spontaneously radiate a travelling photon to an open system when decaying to the ground state. However, in contrast to electric dipoles, magnetic dipoles by magnons are more isolated from the environment, limiting their radiation and coherent communication with photons. The recent progresses in strongly coupled magnon-photon system have stimulated the manipulation of magnon radiation via tailoring the photon states. Here, by loading an yttrium iron garnet sphere in a one-dimensional waveguide cavity supporting both the travelling and standing photon modes, we demonstrate a significant magnon radiative damping that is proportional to the local density of photon states (LDOS). By modulating the magnitude and/or polarization of LDOS, we can flexibly tune the photon emission and magnon radiative damping. Our findings provide a way to manipulate photon emission from magnon radiation, which could help harness angular momentum generation, transfer, and storage in magnonics.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the transient behavior of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in a 87 Rb vapor cell. Our focus is on optimizing the optical rotation signal by identifying influential factors. We investigate the impact of cell temperature on alkali atom density and consider characteristics of the light field, such as polarization direction, frequency, intensity, and beam diameter. Low scanning magnetic field rates produce the usual absorption signal, whereas high rates show an asymmetric transient response with oscillatory decay. To further investigate this phenomenon, we evaluate signal amplitude and resonant peaks along the x -, y -, and z -axis directions. Notably, we establish a one-dimensional quadratic equation that describes the relationship between magnetic field scan rate and signal amplitude/peak value. Our findings facilitate the quick evaluation of cell performance, provide insights into the dynamics of ground-state coherence generation, and have potential applications in detecting transient spin coupling or monitoring magnetic fields.

Abstract:The possibility of coherent radiation by molecular magnets is investigated. It is shown that to realize the coherent radiation, it is necessary to couple the considered sample to a resonant electric circuit. A theory for describing this phenomenon is developed, based on a realistic microscopic Hamiltonian, including the Zeeman terms, single-site anisotropy, and dipole interactions. The role of hyperfine interactions between molecular and nuclear spins is studied. Numerical solutions of the spin evolution equations are presented.

Modification of multipole transitions by twisted light

Abstract:A theoretical analysis is presented for the excitation of single many-electron atoms and ions by twisted (or vortex) light. Special emphasis is put on excitations that can proceed via several electric and magnetic multipole channels. We argue that the relative strength of these multipoles is very sensitive to the topological charge and kinematic parameters of the incident light and can be strongly modified with respect to the plane-wave case. Most remarkably, the modification of multipole transitions by twisted radiation can be described by means of a geometrical factor. This factor is independent of the shell structure of a particular target atom and just reflects the properties of the light beam as well as the position of an atom with respect to the vortex axis. An analytical expression for the geometrical factor is derived for Bessel photons and for a realistic experimental situation in which the position of an atom is not well determined. To illustrate the use of the geometrical factor for the analysis of (future) measurements, detailed calculations are presented for the $3s3p \, ^3P_1 \to 3s 3p \, ^1P_1$ excitation in neutral Mg.
