Abstract:By adopting the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology, elastic optical networks can provide the flexible and variable bandwidth allocation to each connection request and get higher spectrum utilization. The routing and spectrum assignment problem in elastic optical network is a well-known NP-hard problem. In addition, information security has received worldwide attention. We combine these two problems to investigate the routing and spectrum assignment problem with the guaranteed security in elastic optical network, and establish a new optimization model to minimize the maximum index of the used frequency slots, which is used to determine an optimal routing and spectrum assignment schemes. To solve the model effectively, a hybrid genetic algorithm framework integrating a heuristic algorithm into a genetic algorithm is proposed. The heuristic algorithm is first used to sort the connection requests and then the genetic algorithm is designed to look for an optimal routing and spectrum assignment scheme. In the genetic algorithm, tailor-made crossover, mutation and local search operators are designed. Moreover, simulation experiments are conducted with three heuristic strategies, and the experimental results indicate that the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm framework.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate and investigate high-speed passive optical networks (PON) in the O-band without using any digital signal processing (DSP) at the ONU side, meanwhile still adopting cost-effective low-bandwidth optics. We show that with commercial 10G-class optics including DML and PIN-TIA, 50Gb/s PAM4 PON with a power budget up to 29dB is achieved under the HD-FEC BER limit. We present the detailed design procedure of the DSP including the downlink Nyquist pulse shaping and pre-equalization and uplink post-equalization, and conduct a comprehensive study on this system including DSP complexity, DAC/ADC sampling rate requirement and tolerance to the response diversity of ONU receivers. We conclude that, 1) 55 and 35 taps are sufficient for downlink and uplink digital filters to approach the BER floor; 2) the minimum required DAC and ADC sampling rate are respectively 33.75GS/s and 32GS/s to achieve the optimal performance; and 3) with 1dB sensitivity penalty at the HD-FEC BER limit, the allowable response diversity of ONU receivers can be from -2.2dB/10GHz to 1.8dB/10GHz. Furthermore, we explore and demonstrate the suitable data rate based on on-off keying and duobinary modulation formats in this system and present corresponding results.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the network utility maximization problem with various user priorities via jointly optimizing user association, load distribution and power control in a load-coupled heterogeneous network. In order to tackle the nonconvexity of the problem, we first analyze the problem by obtaining the optimal resource allocation strategy in closed form and characterizing the optimal base station load distribution pattern. Both observations are shown essential in simplifying the original problem and making it possible to transform the nonconvex load distribution and power control problem into convex reformulation via exponential variable transformation. An iterative algorithm with low complexity is accordingly presented to obtain a suboptimal solution to the joint optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance than conventional approaches.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of routing and spectrum assignment for static connection requests in elastic optical networks (EONs) is studied. Two different ratios of blocking formations are adopted, and a global constraint optimization model is established to minimize the ratio of blocking in the network. First, we propose an availability index of the frequency slots in the path. Second, a strategy of routing is designed by considering the two indexes of path length and availability index to judge the quality of the path. Then, a greedy strategy, which can obtain the largest availability index in the path after the frequency slot allocated, is proposed for the sake of assigning the spectra effectively. Simulation experiments were carried out in two network topologies. The two different ratios of blocking are obtained for different sorting strategy for connection requests and the number of connection requests. The experimental results show that the routing and spectrum assignment scheme designed in this paper can get a small ratio of blocking.

Abstract:All-optical networks (AON) provide large bandwidth, high-speed switching, and quality of service (QoS). However, the emergence of recent applications generating flexible traffic demands affects AON resource utilization and QoS management. These concerns are handled by AON using core nodes with large wavelength converters (WC) and fiber delay line (FDL) spaces, resulting in a high cost of implementation and operation. This paper proposes a hybrid core node architecture, upgrading existing nodes with limited effective modification to minimize physical topology costs. This hybrid architecture increases WC and FDL availability and reduces wavelength utilization according to traffic behavior. These new node functions are enabled using an advanced algorithm integrating a novel cost formulation merging WC and FDL with lightpath deflection (LD). This algorithm activates resource availabilities using a flexible QoS scheme considering the required and real-time traffic loss and blocking delay. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach optimizes AON resources while guaranteeing required traffic demands compared to the existing techniques.

Abstract:We design green TDM-WDM hybrid PON networks to satisfy the increasing demand on broadband access. We develop a novel model and propose an effective strategy to minimize the cost and hence to save the cost of the upgrading PON networks. Mixed integer linear programming model is designed to upgrade the capacity of the networks by optimizing upgrading line-rates, add new wavelengths and the optimal splitter location based on the locations of the ONUs and the OLT. The studied case shows the attractive properties of our effective strategy.

Abstract:Optical wireless networks have appealing features such as very high broadband data rates and cost effectiveness. They represent a potential alternative to the last mile (first mile) wireless access problem. However, they are also highly vulnerable to external disturbances such as adverse weather and building sway. In this paper, we develop robust and efficient methods for outdoor optical wireless networks by jointly considering topology optimization and survivability strategies. We propose linearized congestion minimization schemes with working and protection paths (LCM-WP), in which a mixed integer linear program is formulated to choose the optimal working and protection paths for every OD pair such that the network congestion is minimized. In particular, the objective is to minimize the maximum amount of traffic on the links. To solve realistically sized problems, we consider a restricted version of the LCM-WP, in which only limited sets of candidate working and protection paths are considered. A simple algorithm is developed to find candidate working and protection paths for each origin-destination (OD) pair. Implementation of our LCM-WP schemes demonstrates the efficiency of our approach in terms of the number of constraints and solution time. It also shows that our approach is applicable to realistically sized networks.
Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for Elastic Optical Networks using Convex Optimization

Abstract:We propose a two-stage algorithm for energy-efficient resource allocation constrained to QoS and physical requirements in OFDM-based EONs. The first stage deals with routing, grooming and traffic ordering and aims at minimizing amplifier power consumption and number of active transponders. We provide a heuristic procedure which yields an acceptable solution for the complex ILP formulation of the routing and grooming. In the second stage, we optimize transponder configuration including spectrum and transmit power parameters to minimize transponder power consumption. We show how QoS and transponder power consumption are represented by convex expressions and use the results to formulate a convex problem for configuring transponders in which transmit optical power is an optimization variable. Simulation results demonstrate that the power consumption is reduced by 9% when the proposed routing and grooming algorithm is applied to European Cost239 network with aggregate traffic 60 Tbps. It is shown that our convex formulation for transponder parameter assignment is considerably faster than its MINLP counterpart and its ability to optimize transmit optical power improves transponder power consumption by 8% for aggregate traffic 60 Tbps. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of adaptive modulation assignment and transponder capacity on inherent tradeoff between network CAPEX and OPEX.

Abstract:The fundamental performance limits of coherent optical transmission systems can be observed by a simple optimization between the linear noise and the nonlinear noise generated within the system. Optical Phase Conjugation (OPC) is considered to be one of the promising techniques to compensate for optical fiber’s dispersion and nonlinearity that cause crosstalk between signals traveling through long-haul optical transmission systems, nonlinearity compensation can lead to significant information capacity and distance reach expansion of optical fiber transmission links. To get the full benefit from the deployment of OPC in optical transmission systems, a few considerations must be taken into account, such as: power profile symmetry, fiber’s dispersion slope and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). In this contribution, we will present our simplified theoretical predictions of optical fiber transmission systems performance that deploy mid-link OPC and multiOPC and we will show that the introduction of multi-OPC in an optical transmission system will minimize the impact of uncompensated/nondeterministic signal-signal nonlinear interactions due to fiber’s PMD and signal-noise interactions. We will show wide range of simulation and experimental results that validate the theoretical predictions of system’s performance for various types of links: dispersion managed, dispersion unmanaged, discretely amplified systems and distributed Raman amplified systems. Also, we will present an extensive experimental study shows that the deployment of mid-link OPC can provide a significant reach improvement in asymmetric lumped optical fiber links when optimizing the span length.

Abstract:Routing and spectrum allocation for connection requests in elastic optical networks are investigated.Considering the influence of physical nodes on the security,a global constrained optimization model is established,which is with the requirement of meeting the minimum security level as the constraint and with the maximum sequence number of frequency slots in networks as the optimization goal.In order to solve the constrained optimization model effectively,a global optimization algorithm is presented.The connection requests groomed are sorted according to a specific sorting policy.K paths,which satisfy the minimum security level requirement,are selected for every connection request.To minimize the maximum sequence number of frequency slots,the improved genetic algorithm is employed to determine the optimal routing and spectrum allocation scheme.In order to verify the validity of the proposed algorithm,simulations are conducted in different network topologies,and the results show that the efficient spectrum allocation can be achieved by the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Increasing bandwidth requirements have posed significant challenges for traditional access networks. It is difficult for intensity modulation/direct detection to meet the power budget and flexibility requirements of the next-generation passive optical network (PON) at 100G and beyond considering the new requirements. This is driving researchers to develop novel optical access technologies. Low-cost, wide-coverage, and high-flexibility coherent PON is emerging as a strong contender in the competition. In this article, we will review technologies that reduce the complexity of coherent PON (CPON), enabling it to meet the commercial requirements. Also, advanced algorithms and architectures that can enhance system coverage and flexibility are also discussed.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new scheme to support an all-optical virtual private network (VPN) in orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access passive optical networks (OFDMA PONs). In our scheme, VPN communications among optical network units (ONUs) are concurrent, where each ONU can simultaneously transmit/receive different VPN traffic to/from other ONUs. Therefore, VPN communications between any two ONUs can be achieved at any time. The bit rates of VPN traffic can be also flexibly adjusted by using dynamic OFDM subcarrier-allocation technique. The proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated with 5-Gb/s downlink, 2-Gb/s uplink, and 2-Gb/s VPN OFDM signals. Error-free performances are obtained for all these signals after 25-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission.

Abstract:High-capacity communication networks are built to provide high throughput and low latency to accommodate the growing demand for bandwidth. However, the provision of these features is subject to a robust underlying network, which can provide high capacity with maximum reliability in terms of the system's connection availability. This work optimizes an existing 2D spectral–spatial optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) passive optical network (PON) to maximize connection availability while maintaining desirable communication capacity and capital expenditure. Optimization is performed by employing ring topology at the feeder level, which is used to provide a redundant path in case of connection failures. Furthermore, high transmission capacity is ensured by utilizing a pseudo-3D double-weight zero cross-correlation (DW-ZCC) code. The analysis is performed with Optisystem simulations to observe the performance of the system in terms of bit error rate (BER), received power, and eye openings. It is observed that the introduction of ring topology at the feeder level of the PON does not impact the overall transmission capacity of the system. The system can still support maximum transmission capacity at receiver sensitivities of up to −19 dB. Reliability analysis also shows that the optimized ring-based architecture can provide desirable connection availability compared to the existing system.

Optimized Parallel Transmission in Elastic Optical Networks to Support High-Speed Ethernet

Abstract:The need for optical parallelization is driven by the imminent optical capacity crunch, where the spectral efficiency required in the coming decades will be beyond the Shannon limit. To this end, the emerging high-speed Ethernet services at 100 Gbps, have already standardized options to utilize parallel optics to parallelize interfaces referred to as Multi-lane Distribution (MLD). OFDM-based optical network is a promising transmission option towards the goal of Ethernet parallelization. It can allocate optical resource tailored for a variety of bandwidth requirements and that in a fundamentally parallel fashion with each sub-carrier utilizing a frequency slot at a lower rate than if serial transmission was used. In this paper, we propose a novel parallel transmission framework designed for elastic (OFDM-based) optical networks to support high-speed Ethernet services, in-line with IEEE and ITU-T standards. We formulate an ILP optimization model based on integer linear programming, with consideration of various constraints, including spectrum fragmentation, differential delay and guard-band constraints. We also propose a heuristic algorithm which can be applied when the optimization model becomes intractable. The numerical results show the effectiveness and high suitability of elastic optical networks to support parallel transmission in high-speed Ethernet. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to investigate the parallel transmission in elastic optical networks to support standardized high-speed Ethernet.
