Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as a promising candidate in the chemoresistive gas sensor field to overcome the disadvantages of conventional metal-oxide semiconductors owing to their strong surface activities and high surface-to-volume ratio. This review summarizes the various approaches to enhance the 2D-material-based gas sensors and provides an overview of their progress. The distinctive attributes of semiconductor gas sensors employing 2D materials will be highlighted with their inherent advantages and associated challenges. The general operating principles of semiconductor gas sensors and the unique characteristics of 2D materials in gas-sensing mechanisms will be explored. The pros and cons of 2D materials in gas-sensing channels are discussed, and a route to overcome the current challenges will be delivered. Finally, the recent advancements to enhance the performance of 2D-material-based gas sensors including photo-activation, heteroatom doping, defect engineering, heterostructures, and nanostructures will be discussed. This review should offer a broad range of readers a new perspective toward the future development of 2D-material-based gas sensors.

Abstract:Abstract Gas sensors have been widely utilized penetrating every aspect of our daily lives, such as medical industry, environmental safety testing, and the food industry. In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) materials have shown promising potential and prominent advantages in gas sensing technology, due to their unique physical and chemical properties. In addition, the ultra-high surface-to-volume ratio and surface activity of the 2D materials with atomic-level thickness enables enhanced absorption and sensitivity. Till now, different gas sensing techniques have been developed to further boost the performance of 2D materials-based gas sensors, such as various surface functionalization and Van der Waals heterojunction formation. In this article, a comprehensive review of advanced gas sensing devices is provided based on 2D materials, focusing on two sensing principles of charge-exchange and surface oxygen ion adsorption. Six types of typical gas sensor devices based on 2D materials are introduced with discussion of latest research progress and future perspectives.

Abstract:The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with unique physiochemical properties and structure versatility has significantly boosted the development of gas sensing technology. This review paper explores recent advances in utilizing 2D materials, such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), black phosphorus, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), g-C3N4, MXenes, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), for field-effect transistor (FET) and chemiresistive gas sensors. In addition to the unique properties contributing to the sensing performance, the key aspects of synthesis methods, sensing mechanisms, and sensing performance of 2D materials are systematically elaborated. Furthermore, the review highlights recent progress in performance optimization through material functionalization, heterostructure design, and material systems hybridization. Potential solutions to the key challenges, including scalability, reproducibility, selectivity, and environmental stability, are addressed to unlock the full potential of 2D materials in gas-sensing applications. By comprehensively compiling state-of-the-art developments in 2D layered materials for gas sensing, this review provides critical insights into the evolving landscape of sensor technologies and inspires new strategies for addressing critical environmental and industrial challenges.

Abstract:It is necessary to develop efficient sensing materials, high-performance sensors and detailed mechanism study of chemiresistor gas sensors for applications in the fields of toxic gas monitoring, smart home, non-traumatic disease marker, wearable electronics, etc. Two-dimensional materials (2DMs), including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), black phosphorus (BP), graphitic carbon nitride ( g -C 3 N 4 ), MXenes, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), boron nitride (BN) and others, have proven to be attractive for fabrication of chemiresistor gas sensors due to their unique structure and remarkable characteristics. A major focus of this paper on advances and challenges in gas sensors based on 2DMs. Firstly, the electronic structure, physical and chemical properties and semiconductor properties of 2DMs are described. Secondly, the synthesis methods and gas-sensitive properties of 2DMs based gas sensors are introduced. In addition, strategies of improving gas sensors based on 2DMs are also discussed. Finally, the developments trend for 2DMs based gas sensors is presented from the following aspects: regulation of microstructure, contact between 2DMs and substrates, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based gas sensors and gas sensor arrays, flexible and wearable gas sensors, smart self-power and wireless gas sensors, theoretical calculation and in-situ characterization, influence of humidity on gas sensitivity.

Abstract:Meeting the increasing demand for sensors with high sensitivity, high selectivity, and rapid detection presents many challenges. In the last decade, electronic sensors based on field-effect transistors (FETs) have been widely studied due to their high sensitivity, rapid detection, and simple test procedure. Among these sensors, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial-based FET sensors have been demonstrated with tremendous potential for the detection of a wide range of analytes which is attributed to the unique structural and electronic properties of 2D nanomaterials. This comprehensive review discusses the recent progress in graphene-, 2D transition metal dichalcogenide-, and 2D black phosphorus-based FET sensors, with an emphasis on rapid and low-concentration detection of gases, biomolecules, and water contaminants.

Abstract:Sensors, capable of detecting trace amounts of gas molecules or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are in great demand for environmental monitoring, food safety, health diagnostics, and national defense. In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data, the requirements on gas sensors, in addition to sensitivity and selectivity, have been increasingly placed on sensor simplicity, room temperature operation, ease for integration, and flexibility. The key to meet these requirements is the development of high-performance gas sensing materials. Two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals, emerged after graphene, have demonstrated a number of attractive properties that are beneficial to gas sensing, such as the versatile and tunable electronic/optoelectronic properties of metal chalcogenides (MCs), the rich surface chemistry and good conductivity of MXenes, and the anisotropic structural and electronic properties of black phosphorus (BP). While most gas sensors based on 2D atomic crystals have been incorporated in the setup of a chemiresistor, field-effect transistor (FET), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), or optical fiber, their working principles that involve gas adsorption, charge transfer, surface reaction, mass loading, and/or change of the refractive index vary from material to material. Understanding the gas-solid interaction and the subsequent signal transduction pathways is essential not only for improving the performance of existing sensing materials but also for searching new and advanced ones. In this review, we aim to provide an overview of the recent development of gas sensors based on various 2D atomic crystals from both the experimental and theoretical investigations. We will particularly focus on the sensing mechanisms and working principles of the related sensors, as well as approaches to enhance their sensing performances. Finally, we summarize the whole article and provide future perspectives for the development of gas sensors with 2D materials.

Abstract:Chemiresistive gas sensors have gained popularity in various fields including industry, agriculture, medical treatment, and the environment, thanks to the advancements in nanoscience and nanotechnology. To produce high-performance gas sensing devices, it is crucial to develop new sensing layers. Among zero to three-dimensional nanostructures, one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures have attracted significant attention due to their large surface-to-volume ratio, stretchable charge channels, and favorable assembly environment. This review aims to systematically discuss recent advances in novel sensing materials based on 1D nanostructures such as nanorods, nanoribbons, nanowires, nanofibers, and nanotubes. The 1D sensing materials encompass metal oxide semiconductors, metal-organic frameworks, conducting polymers, carbon-based materials, and complex composites. The review also delves into the design ideas, preparation methods, the relationship between structure, morphology and performance, and enhanced sensing mechanisms. Finally, the review summarizes the current state of the art for chemiresistive gas sensors based on 1D nanostructures and provides a brief outlook on future development perspectives.

Abstract:The detection of specific gas components under various working conditions while at the same time realizing other functions with the same devices has emerged through great efforts due to these devices’ superior energy-saving and high-efficiency properties. Although so-called multifunctional gas sensors have been fabricated with various novel materials, two-dimensional (2D) materials with unique physical and chemical properties used in multifunctional gas sensors have not yet been well studied. In this review, we summarize up-to-date multifunctional gas sensors based on different 2D materials, including graphene and its derivatives, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), MXenes, etc. The progress of machine learning and artificial intelligence used in emerging powerful sensors is introduced. Their sensing abilities and mechanisms are discussed, and further smart devices equipped with IoT platforms and 5G communication are expected for future electronic use.

Abstract:Monitoring harmful and toxic chemicals, gases, microorganisms, and radiation has been a challenge to the scientific community for the betterment of human health and environment. Two-dimensional (2D)-material-based sensors are highly efficient and compatible with modern fabrication technology, which yield data that can be proficiently used for health and environmental monitoring. Graphene and its oxides, black phosphorus (BP), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), metal oxides, and other 2D nanomaterials have demonstrated properties that have been alluring for the manufacture of highly sensitive sensors due to their unique material properties arising from their inherent structures. This review summarizes the properties of 2D nanomaterials that can provide a platform to develop high-performance sensors. In this review, we have also discussed the advances made in the field of infrared photodetectors and electrochemical sensors and how the structural properties of 2D nanomaterials affect sensitivity and performance. Further, this review highlights 2D-nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors that can be used to check for contaminations from heavy metals, organic/inorganic compounds, poisonous gases, pesticides, bacteria, antibiotics, etc., in water or air, which are severe risks to human wellbeing as well as the environment. Moreover, the limitations, future prospects, and challenges for the development of sensors based on 2D materials are also discussed for future advancements.

Abstract:The evolutionary success in information technology has been sustained by the rapid growth of sensor technology. Recently, advances in sensor technology have promoted the ambitious requirement to build intelligent systems that can be controlled by external stimuli along with independent operation, adaptivity, and low energy expenditure. Among various sensing techniques, field-effect transistors (FETs) with channels made of two-dimensional (2D) materials attract increasing attention for advantages such as label-free detection, fast response, easy operation, and capability of integration. With atomic thickness, 2D materials restrict the carrier flow within the material surface and expose it directly to the external environment, leading to efficient signal acquisition and conversion. This review summarizes the latest advances of 2D-materials-based FET (2D FET) sensors in a comprehensive manner that contains the material, operating principles, fabrication technologies, proof-of-concept applications, and prototypes. First, a brief description of the background and fundamentals is provided. The subsequent contents summarize physical, chemical, and biological 2D FET sensors and their applications. Then, we highlight the challenges of their commercialization and discuss corresponding solution techniques. The following section presents a systematic survey of recent progress in developing commercial prototypes. Lastly, we summarize the long-standing efforts and prospective future development of 2D FET-based sensing systems toward commercialization.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The creation and enhancement of gas sensors with exceptional performance are of paramount importance for the rapid and effective identification of hazardous and noxious gases in both production and daily life. At the core of gas sensors are the gas-detecting components. Among the various materials for gas sensing, ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) materials offer numerous advantages, such as a large specific surface area, appropriate lattice distortion, an abundance of surface pendant bonds and strong in-plane chemical bonds, making them an ideal platform for gas sensing. This article provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art synthesis techniques and surface-interface electronic structure tuning for ultrathin 2D materials, including transition metal oxides (TMOs), layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), transition metal carbides, transition metal carbonitrides and nitrides (MXenes), and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) & covalent organic frameworks (COFs). These materials are used to create gas sensing platforms capable of achieving selective, rapid, and sensitive detection of target gases. The techniques used to improve gas sensors based on ultrathin 2D materials are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the article outlines future challenges and opportunities for the development of efficient ultrathin 2D materials for intelligent and portable gas sensors. We believe that this review will inspire innovative ideas and strategies for the development and design of new gas sensors, shifting the focus from industrial concerns to applied research and scientific issues.

Abstract:<p>2D materials are gaining great attention owing to their superior electrical, optical, and mechanical characteristics. In recent decades, 2D materials have demonstrated significant potential for the identification of disease‐related biomarkers based on semiconductor gas sensors. Herein, the recent progress of semiconductor gas sensors fabricated by 2D materials covering graphene, black phosphorus, transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, metal‐organic frameworks, metal oxide nanosheets, etc. is clearly described. First, the basic attributes of 2D materials are described, and their gas‐sensing mechanisms are also summarized. Second, the ability of 2D material‐based sensors in the detection of disease‐related gas molecules is also highlighted. Finally, some effective methods for enhancing the gas‐sensing performance of 2D materials are discussed, and the opportunities and challenges accompanying are also presented. This work could provide new avenues for material synthesis, sensor development, medical diagnosis, and the related fields.</p>

Abstract:With a series of widespread applications, resistive gas sensors are considered to be promising candidates for gas detection, benefiting from their small size, ease-of-fabrication, low power consumption and outstanding maintenance properties. One-dimensional (1-D) nanomaterials, which have large specific surface areas, abundant exposed active sites and high length-to-diameter ratios, enable fast charge transfers and gas-sensitive reactions. They can also significantly enhance the sensitivity and response speed of resistive gas sensors. The features and sensing mechanism of current resistive gas sensors and the potential advantages of 1-D nanomaterials in resistive gas sensors are firstly reviewed. This review systematically summarizes the design and optimization strategies of 1-D nanomaterials for high-performance resistive gas sensors, including doping, heterostructures and composites. Based on the monitoring requirements of various characteristic gases, the available applications of this type of gas sensors are also classified and reviewed in the three categories of environment, safety and health. The direction and priorities for the future development of resistive gas sensors are laid out.

Abstract:Gas sensors are frequently used for detecting toxic gases and vapors for environmental control, industrial monitoring, and household safety. Semiconductor conductivity can be modified by doping or fine-tuned by applying an electric or magnetic field in an ultra-wide range (10-7 S/cm to 102 S/cm). The conduction of semiconductor is significantly raised or reduced upon the exposure to external conditions, such as temperature variation, light, heat, mechanical stress, or chemicals. Thus, semiconductors are excellent materials for sensors and the device structures are critical for sensing performance. The commonly used semiconductors materials include Si, Ge, III-V, and metal oxide semiconductors. Recently carbon-based materials gain signification attention due to their unique electrical, optical and mechanical properties. There are two major semiconductor gas sensors: resistor-based and FET-based sensors. In this review, the semiconductor materials, sensor device structure as well as gas sensing mechanisms will be systematically categorized, described and explored, with the focus on metal oxides, GaN, SiC, 2D-TMD and carbon-based gas sensors. The recent progress in new semiconductor gas sensors will be thoroughly reviewed and summarized, with a hope to show the trend in semiconductor gas sensor technology.

Abstract:The significance of two-dimensional (2D) materials including graphene, and transition metal dichalcogenides has been escalating in gas sensor technology owing to detection of gases at room temperature (RT) and good mechanical flexibility. The operation of gas sensors at RT removes micro-heater from traditional gas sensors and also ensures miniaturization with extremely low power consumption to meet the requirements of advance applications. Recent significant progress in the growth of 2D materials via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology allows industrial production of 2D materials-based gas sensor devices. In this review, we focus on the recent progress in RT gas sensors by employing CVD-grown 2D materials' nanostructures. First, fundamentals and growth mechanisms of the CVD-grown different nanostructures (0D, 1D, 2D and 3D) are elaborated to get a profound understanding of growth on rigid and flexible substrates. Second, we thoroughly discussed strategies toward novel RT gas sensing properties of CVD-grown 2D materials. The newly introduced peculiar sensing properties by the different nanostructures are extensively elucidated with addressing structure-property correlations. Third, state-of-the-art research endeavors to directly build gas sensors on emerging flexible and wearable sensing platforms are discussed. Finally, we highlighted current challenges and future outlook of the 2D materials-based gas sensors by employing a mature CVD technology of the electronics industry for practical sensing applications.

Abstract:During the last few decades, the microelectronics industry has actively been investigating the potential for the functional integration of semiconductor-based devices beyond digital logic and memory, which includes RF and analog circuits, biochips, and sensors, on the same chip. In the case of gas sensor integration, it is necessary that future devices can be manufactured using a fabrication technology which is also compatible with the processes applied to digital logic transistors. This will likely involve adopting the mature complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication technique or a technique which is compatible with CMOS due to the inherent low costs, scalability, and potential for mass production that this technology provides. While chemiresistive semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors have been the principal semiconductor-based gas sensor technology investigated in the past, resulting in their eventual commercialization, they need high-temperature operation to provide sufficient energies for the surface chemical reactions essential for the molecular detection of gases in the ambient. Therefore, the integration of a microheater in a MEMS structure is a requirement, which can be quite complex. This is, therefore, undesirable and room temperature, or at least near-room temperature, solutions are readily being investigated and sought after. Room-temperature SMO operation has been achieved using UV illumination, but this further complicates CMOS integration. Recent studies suggest that two-dimensional (2D) materials may offer a solution to this problem since they have a high likelihood for integration with sophisticated CMOS fabrication while also providing a high sensitivity towards a plethora of gases of interest, even at room temperature. This review discusses many types of promising 2D materials which show high potential for integration as channel materials for digital logic field effect transistors (FETs) as well as chemiresistive and FET-based sensing films, due to the presence of a sufficiently wide band gap. This excludes graphene from this review, while recent achievements in gas sensing with graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), phosphorene, and MXenes are examined.

Abstract:1D nanomaterials are promising sensor materials for healthcare, industrial and residential environment monitoring, aerospace, defense, food quality control, and agriculture applications. Recent advances in addressing the challenges of 1D nanosensor scale up and real‐world use are reviewed. The material types include both the common ones in R&D development such as metal oxides and carbon nanotubes as well as metal and charge‐transfer complex nanowires. There is rapid growth in the global gas sensor market driven by new regulations for industrial emission control and residential environments and increasing demand for portable devices. Nanosensors promise to be the next generation gas sensors for the direct detection of chemical species due to their ultrahigh sensitivity, fast response, ultralow weight, and low power consumption. However, transitioning nanosensors from basic research or prototype projects to commercial products encounters two major technical challenges: difficulty in scale up and inability to demonstrate real‐world use in changing humidity and temperature conditions. The advances in addressing these two technical challenges in recent literature are surveyed. The most common 1D nanomaterials in R&D for gas sensing, metal oxides, and carbon nanotubes, as well as less common metal nanowires and psudo‐1D crystals made from charge‐transfer complexes (CTCs) are included. This review delves into the specifics of each of these 1D nanomaterials for gas sensing applications, their synthesis and deposition, sensing performance, and commercial development in the last 5 years. It highlights the scalability of one‐step electrodeposition of CTC nanowires on prefabricated electrodes, at room temperature, and from solution in making gas nanosensors.

Abstract:<p>While numerous types of gas sensors have been developed for various industries and applications such as the automotive industry, environmental monitoring, and personal safety, nanoscale chemiresistive gas sensors have gained significant research interest due to several advantages such as high sensitivity, low power consumption, and portability. An essential component of these gas sensors is the sensing material where metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) materials are the most prevalent sensing material. Since the adoption of nanoscale synthesis methods for sensing materials development, such as electrospinning and hydrothermal synthesis, many novel 1D MOS-based nanostructured sensing materials have been demonstrated to enhance gas sensing performance. Overall, nanoengineering approaches and mechanisms for enhancement of gas sensing performance of 1D metal oxide-based sensing materials are systematically discussed and categorized into several overarching strategies, such as tuning of materials dimension, morphology, and composition. Furthermore, integration of 1D sensing nanomaterials into sensor devices are discussed from the perspective of different chemiresistive sensor architectures and device fabrication methods. Finally, this review also discusses use of 1D MOS materials for emerging and novel electronic nose applications.</p>

Recent Advances in Engineering of 2D Layered Metal Chalcogenides for Resistive‐Type Gas Sensor

Abstract:The design of 2D layered metal chalcogenides for the state‐of‐art gas sensors from the surface to interlayer in spatial. Engineering concepts are summarized and classified into three types: surface modification, lattice substitution, and interlayer intercalation. Key advances in recent development are systematically discussed to comprehend the benefits of surface chemical effect, electronic properties, and structure features. 2D nanomaterials have triggered widespread attention in sensing applications. Especially for 2D layered metal chalcogenides (LMCs), the unique semiconducting properties and high surface area endow them with great potential for gas sensors. The assembly of 2D LMCs with guest species is an effective functionalization method to produce the synergistic effects of hybridization for greatly enhancing the gas‐sensing properties. This review starts with the synthetic techniques, sensing properties, and principles, and then comprehensively compiles the advanced achievements of the pristine 2D LMCs gas sensors. Key advances in the development of the functionalization of 2D LMCs for enhancing gas‐sensing properties are categorized according to the spatial architectures. It is systematically discussed in three aspects: surface, lattice, and interlayer, to comprehend the benefits of the functionalized 2D LMCs from surface chemical effect, electronic properties, and structure features. The challenges and outlooks for developing high‐performance 2D LMCs‐based gas sensors are also proposed.

Abstract:Gas sensors that exhibit high sensitivity and possess astonishingly low detection limits are appealing for a wide range of practical applications, such as real-time environmental monitoring, exhaled breath diagnostics, security, medical diagnosis and the quality of food analysis. 2D tungsten disulfide/selenide is extensively investigated as a viable material for the fabrication of chemiresistive gas sensors due to its low price, high stability, high sensitivity, distinct electronics, and catalytic characteristics. To improve the performance parameters of the sensor, such as response, sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability, the sensing material layer of 2D-WS 2 and WSe 2 is modified by decorating it with different metal nanoparticles that form heterojunctions or composites of 2D material or semiconductor and carbon derivatives. In this article, we presented an in-depth review of current advancements in WS 2 and WSe 2 -based chemiresistive gas sensors, with particular prominence on the role played by the various noble metal-decorated 2D materials and composites for high performance characteristics, including enhanced response, faster response and recovery times, reduced operating temperatures, and extremely low detection limits. We also talk about the difficulties that 2D-WS 2 and WSe 2 chemiresistive sensors face and their potential in the future.
