Abstract:In this paper, based on model predictive control algorithm, a torque demand control approach is proposed to optimize driving energy consumption of battery electric vehicle, which consists of demand control approach and model predictive controller. The demand control approach is developed to compute the driving mode and the desired vehicle speed. For the design of control law, a novel driving dynamics model of battery electric vehicle is formulated into a set of differential equations by vehicle speed, the front and rear wheel speed. A model predictive control law is designed to compute the optimized torque of electric motor. The torque demand model predictive control algorithm is downloaded into vehicle control unit, which is equipped on the battery electric vehicle for experimental validation. The New European Driving Cycle is utilized to test the control law on the real road. The experimental results indicate that the proposed model predictive controller has a preferable performance in reducing energy consumption, which can improve 1.81% over the original control strategy in the urban road cycle and 1.67% in the city highway condition. It can be considered that the torque demand model predictive control approach is a good candidate for driving energy optimization of battery electric vehicle.

### Problems Addressed by the Paper The paper primarily addresses the issue of optimizing energy consumption in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) during driving. Specifically: 1. **Background and Motivation**: - With the depletion of petroleum resources and the intensification of environmental issues, battery electric vehicles have become a better choice due to their cleanliness and the excellent dynamic performance of electric motors. - However, the limited driving range of battery electric vehicles is the biggest obstacle to their further development. Therefore, improving energy utilization efficiency and reducing energy consumption to enhance energy economy is crucial. 2. **Main Objectives**: - Propose a torque demand optimization method based on the Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm, aiming to achieve minimal energy consumption through real-time vehicle control. - By incorporating the driver's driving intentions, control the vehicle in real-time to optimize energy consumption. 3. **Specific Methods**: - Established a linear vehicle driving dynamics model, considering vehicle speed, front wheel speed, and rear wheel speed as control variables. - Designed a model predictive controller to calculate the optimal motor torque. - Developed a demand control method that automatically identifies driving modes and calculates the desired vehicle speed based on the accelerator pedal position and its rate of change. - Downloaded the proposed torque demand model predictive control algorithm to the vehicle control unit and conducted experimental validation. 4. **Experimental Validation**: - Conducted experimental validation on a real battery electric vehicle platform, using the actual road performance of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) test control strategy. - Experimental results show that the proposed model predictive controller can significantly reduce energy consumption, improving by 1.81% under urban conditions and by 1.67% under urban high-speed conditions. In summary, the main purpose of this paper is to develop a torque demand optimization method based on the Model Predictive Control algorithm to reduce energy consumption in battery electric vehicles during driving.
