Abstract:We introduce an approach for numerically solving the Poisson equation by using a physical model, which is a way to solve a partial differential equation without the finite difference method. This method is especially useful for obtaining the solutions in very many free-charge neutral systems with open boundary conditions. It can be used for arbitrary geometry and mesh style and is more efficient comparing with the widely-used iterative algorithm with multigrid methods. It is especially suitable for parallel computing. This method can also be applied to numerically solving other partial differential equations whose Green functions exist in analytic expression.

Abstract:We present a systematic and efficient Chebyshev spectral method using quasi- inverse technique to directly solve the second order equation with the homogeneous Robin boundary conditions and the fourth order equation with the first and second boundary conditions. The key to the efficiency of the method is to multiply quasi- inverse matrix on both sides of discrete systems, which leads to band structure systems. We can obtain high order accuracy with less computational cost. For multi-dimensional and more complicated linear elliptic PDEs, the advantage of this methodology is obvi- ous. Abstract:A method based on cyclic reduction is described for the solution of the discrete Poisson equation on a rectangular two-dimensional staggered grid with an arbitrary number of grid points in each direction. Neumann boundary conditions are assumed in one direction and any boundary condition may be used in the other direction. The coefficients of the equation can be functions of the latter direction so that, e.g., non-equidistant grid spacings or non-Cartesian coordinates can be used. Poisson's equation with these boundary conditions describes, e.g., the pressure field of an incompressible fluid flow within rigid boundaries. Numerical results are reported for a FORTRAN subroutine using the method. For an M × N grid the operation count is proportional to MN log2 N, and about MN storage locations are required.

Abstract:An innovative, extremely fast and accurate method is presented for Neumann-Dirichlet and Dirichlet-Neumann boundary problems for the Poisson equation, and the diffusion and wave equation in quasi-stationary regime; using the finite difference method, in one dimensional case. Two novels matrices are determined allowing a direct and exact formulation of the solution of the Poisson equation. Verification is also done considering an interesting potential problem and the sensibility is determined. This new method has an algorithm complexity of O(N), its truncation error goes like O(h2), and it is more precise and faster than the Thomas algorithm.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a fast finite element method for the three-dimensional Poisson equation in infinite domains. Both the exterior problem and the strip-tail problem are considered. Exact Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN)-type artificial boundary conditions (ABCs) are derived to reduce the original infinite-domain problems to suitable truncated-domain problems. Based on the best relative Chebyshev approximation for the square-root function, a fast algorithm is developed to approximate exact ABCs. One remarkable advantage is that one need not compute the full eigensystem associated with the surface Laplacian operator on artificial boundaries. In addition, compared with the modal expansion method and the method based on Pad$\acute{\textrm{e}}$ approximation for the square-root function, the computational cost of the DtN mapping is further reduced. An error analysis is performed and numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:We present a fast and accurate algorithm to solve Poisson problems in complex geometries, using regular Cartesian grids. We consider a variety of configurations, including Poisson problems with interfaces across which the solution is discontinuous (of the type arising in multi-fluid flows). The algorithm is based on a combination of the Correction Function Method (CFM) and Boundary Integral Methods (BIM). Interface and boundary conditions can be treated in a fast and accurate manner using boundary integral equations, and the associated BIM. Unfortunately, BIM can be costly when the solution is needed everywhere in a grid, e.g. fluid flow problems. We use the CFM to circumvent this issue. The solution from the BIM is used to rewrite the problem as a series of Poisson problems in rectangular domains—which requires the BIM solution at interfaces/boundaries only. These Poisson problems involve discontinuities at interfaces, of the type that the CFM can handle. Hence we use the CFM to solve them (to high order of accuracy) with finite differences and a Fast Fourier Transform based fast Poisson solver. We present 2-D examples of the algorithm applied to Poisson problems involving complex geometries, including cases in which the solution is discontinuous. We show that the algorithm produces solutions that converge with either 3rd or 4th order of accuracy, depending on the type of boundary condition and solution discontinuity.

Abstract:An improved finite difference method with compact correction term is proposed to solve the Poisson equations. The compact correction term is developed by a coupled high-order compact and low-order classical finite difference formulations. The numerical solutions obtained by the classical finite difference method are considered as fundamental solutions with lower accuracy, whereas compact correction term is added into source term of classical discrete formulation to improve the accuracy of numerical solutions. The proposed method can be extended from two- to multi-dimensional cases straightforwardly. Numerical experiments are carried out to verify the accuracy and efficiency of this method.

Abstract:In this paper we propose the finite difference method for the second-order elliptic equation in the L-shape domain. The scheme is based on the non-overlap domain decomposition method. We use the coarse mesh difference scheme at the interface grids and fine mesh difference scheme at the interior mesh points. We derive the error estimate O(h2+H3) with mesh size h and coarse mesh size H. Then we discuss some iterative methods for our scheme and derive the upper bound of the convergent rate 1−H. Finally we present some numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel method for deducing high-order compact difference schemes for the two-dimensional (2D) Poisson equation. Like finite volume method, a dual partition is introduced. Combining Simpson integral formula and parabolic interpolation, a family of fourth-order and sixth-order compact difference schemes are obtained based on three different types of dual partitions. Moreover, several new fourth-order compact schemes are gained and numerical experiments are shown two of them are much better than almost any other fourth-order schemes which have been presented in others’ work. The outline for the nonlinear Poisson equation is also given. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the feasibility of this new method and the high accuracy of these fourth-order and sixth-order compact difference schemes.

Abstract:We present a new modified nodal cubic spline collocation scheme for solving the Dirichlet problem for Poisson's equation on the unit square. We prove existence and uniqueness of a solution of the scheme and show how the solution can be computed on an $(N+1) \times (N+1)$ uniform partition of the square with cost $O(N^2\mbox{log} N)$ using a direct fast Fourier transform method. Using two comparison functions, we derive an optimal fourth order error bound in the continuous maximum norm. We compare our scheme with other modified nodal cubic spline collocation schemes; in particular, the one proposed by Houstis, Vavalis, and Rice in [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 25 (1988), pp. 5474]. We believe that our paper gives the first correct convergence analysis of a modified nodal cubic spline collocation for solving partial differential equations.

Abstract:R-function method(RFM) is an effective method to construct an analytical function which satisfy the boundary condition of differential equation. Combined with the compactly supported radial basis function(RBF), a semi-analytical meshless method is established. Compared with direct RBF method, the support size of RBF is smaller and the coefficient matrix is more spare but numerical solution still keep the accuracy. Numerical experiments show the effect of the method.

Abstract: A nonoverlapping domain decomposition method is studied for the linearized Poisson--Boltzmann equation, which is essentially an interior-exterior transmission problem with bounded interior and unbounded exterior. This problem is different from the classical Schwarz alternating method for bounded nonoverlapping subdomains well studied by Lions in 1990, and is challenging due to the existence of unbounded subdomain. To obtain the convergence, a new concept of interior-exterior Sobolev constant is introduced and a spectral equivalence of related Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators is established afterwards. We prove rigorously that the spectral equivalence results in the convergence of interior-exterior iteration. Some numerical simulations are provided to investigate the optimal stepping parameter of iteration and to verify our convergence analysis.

Abstract:This work concerns with the development of fast and high order algorithms for solving a single variable Poisson's equation with rectangular domains and uniform meshes, but involving staggered boundaries. Here the staggered boundary means that the boundary is located midway between two adjacent grid nodes. Due to the popularity of staggered grids in scientific computing for solving multiple variables partial differential equations (PDEs), the planned development deserves further studies, but is rarely reported in the literature, because grand challenges exist for spectral methods, compact finite differences, and fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms in handling staggered boundaries. A systematic approach is introduced in this paper to attack various open problems in this regard, which is a natural generalization of a recently developed Augmented Matched Interface and Boundary (AMIB) method for non-staggered boundaries. Formulated through immersed boundary problems with zero-padding solutions, the AMIB method combines arbitrarily high order central differences with the FFT inversion. Over staggered boundaries, the proposed AMIB method can handle Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin or any combination of boundary conditions. Convergence orders in four, six and eight are numerically validated for the AMIB method in both two and three dimensions. Moreover, the proposed AMIB method performs well for some challenging problems, such as low regularity solution near boundary, PDE solution not satisfying the boundary condition, and involving both staggered and non-staggered boundaries on two ends.

Abstract:The numerical simulation for the exterior problem of Poisson equation is considered. We introduced a polygonal artificial boundary Gamma(e) and designed a discrete artificial boundary condition on it by using the direct method of lines. Then the original problem is reduced to a boundary value problem defined in a bounded computational domain with a polygonal boundary. The finite element approximation of this reduced boundary value problem is considered and it is proved that the finite element approximate problem is well posed. Furthermore numerical examples show that the discrete artificial boundary condition is very effective and more accurate than the Neumann boundary condition which is often used in engineering literatures. Fast Poisson solvers for spectral methods

Abstract:Poisson's equation is the canonical elliptic partial differential equation. While there exist fast Poisson solvers for finite difference and finite element methods, fast Poisson solvers for spectral methods have remained elusive. Here, we derive spectral methods for solving Poisson's equation on a square, cylinder, solid sphere, and cube that have an optimal complexity (up to polylogarithmic terms) in terms of the degrees of freedom required to represent the solution. Whereas FFT-based fast Poisson solvers exploit structured eigenvectors of finite difference matrices, our solver exploits a separated spectra property that holds for our spectral discretizations. Without parallelization, we can solve Poisson's equation on a square with 100 million degrees of freedom in under two minutes on a standard laptop.

Abstract:We consider a class of nonlinear elliptic problems associated with models in biophysics, which are described by the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE). We prove mathematical correctness of the problem, study a suitable class of approximations, and deduce guaranteed and fully computable bounds of approximation errors. The latter goal is achieved by means of the approach suggested in [S. Repin, A posteriori error estimation for variational problems with uniformly convex functionals. Math. Comp., 69:481-500, 2000] for convex variational problems. Moreover, we establish the error identity, which defines the error measure natural for the considered class of problems and show that it yields computable majorants and minorants of the global error as well as indicators of local errors that provide efficient adaptation of meshes. Theoretical results are confirmed by a collection of numerical tests that includes problems on $2D$ and $3D$ Lipschitz domains.

Abstract:We consider problems governed by a linear elliptic equation with varying coefficients across internal interfaces. The solution and its normal derivative can undergo significant variations through these internal boundaries. We present a compact finite-difference scheme on a tree-based adaptive grid that can be efficiently solved using a natively parallel data structure. The main idea is to optimize the truncation error of the discretization scheme as a function of the local grid configuration to achieve second-order accuracy. Numerical illustrations are presented in two and three-dimensional configurations.

Abstract:Objectives . A finite-difference computational algorithm is proposed for solving a mixed boundary-value problem for the Poisson equation given in two-dimensional irregular domains. Methods . To solve the problem, generalized curvilinear coordinates are used. The physical domain is mapped to the computational domain (unit square) in the space of generalized coordinates. The original problem is written in curvilinear coordinates and approximated on a uniform grid in the computational domain.The obtained results are mapped on non-uniform boundary-fitted difference grid in the physical domain. Results . The second order approximations of mixed Neumann-Dirichlet boundary conditions for the Poisson equation in the space of generalized curvilinear coordinate are constructed. To increase the order of Neumann condition approximations, an approximation of the Poisson equation on the boundary of the domain is used. Conclusions . To solve a mixed boundary value problem for the Poisson equation in two-dimensional irregular domains, the computational algorithm of second-order accuracy is constructed. The generalized curvilinear coordinates are used. The results of numerical experiments, which confirm the second order accuracy of the computational algorithm, are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a robust and accurate numerical algorithm for solving the nonlinear Poisson–Boltzmann equation, based on the difference potentials method (DPM). First, we remove singularity by a simple regularization technique and employ Newton's method for linearizing the equation. Then we use the difference potentials method combined with a second-order finite difference scheme and curvilinear approach to solve the problem in the regions with a smooth general-shaped interface. Unlike many other methods, DPM does not need to treat the nonhomogeneous interface conditions resulting from the regularization and can handle discontinuity in the interface without loss of accuracy. In DPM the grid does not need to conform to the boundary or interfaces. This method approximates the resulting equation on a regular structured grid, which entails a low computational complexity, and does not face the challenge of reducing the order of accuracy near the nonconforming interfaces. Several numerical experiments are presented for illustrating the efficiency and accuracy of the developed numerical method.
