Abstract:The rise of deep neural networks has effectively improved the performance of optic disc and cup segmentation, relying on the assumption of shared data distributions between training and testing. Clinical settings, however, yield images from diverse institutions, which causes domain shifts from scanner and patient disparities, thus hampering model performance. To address this problem, we introduce a low-frequency amplitude fusion consistency learning (LFAFSL) method for multi-source domain adaptation in medical image segmentation. Specifically, we propose bidirectional low-frequency amplitude fusion for augmenting source and target domain images, aligning styles while preserving content. Four consistency losses constrain the network predictions before and after low-frequency amplitude fusion across domains, mitigating domain shifts and extracting domain-invariant features. We evaluate LFAFCL on three public fundus image datasets for optic disc and cup segmentation under three different multi-source domain settings. LFAFCL surpasses other competitive multi-source domain adaptation methods on optic disc and optic cup segmentation tasks, which demonstrates that the proposed LFAFCL tackles multi-source domain adaptation challenges, enhancing robustness and generalization of segmentation model across diverse domains, thus achieving promising improvements in real-world clinical settings with varied data sources.
