Landscape Ecology
Abstract:ContextAnimal movements influence the spatial heterogeneity of variously ecosystem processes. However, our understand of how movement in heterogeneous landscapes shapes ecological process were derived mostly from models assuming that landscape is static over time, which might mask more complex interactions and important consequences.ObjectivesWe therefore examined how the movement of foragers interact with spatio-temporally dynamic landscape to shape the population dynamics and affect the primary production and landscape heterogeneity in productive landscapes.MethodsUsing the movement of mud snails in a spatially patterned mudflat as a case study, we first performed an experiment in a microcosm landscape to explore the movement pattern of mud snails. We then combined a movement model with a dynamic model of landscape to predict changes in spatial distribution, population growth, landscape production and heterogeneity in response to movement pattern.ResultsWe found that local adjustment of movement speed to food density under different water cover regimes results in mud snails aggregation on the boundaries of food resource patches, such movement pattern increases the accessibility of food resources to snails, thereby leading to a high population density, and followed by low primary production and spatial heterogeneity of the mudflat.ConclusionsThe overall results provide insight into the underlying process of spatio-temporal population dynamics of mud snails and the response of spatial patterned mudflat landscape, but can also be extended to other systems which the dynamics of resource landscapes occurs at similar or faster pace than the population dynamics of consumers.
