Abstract:Automatic fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) have for a long time used only minutiae for fingerprint matching. But minutiae are only a small subset of fingerprint detail routinely used by latent examiners for fingerprint matching. This has generated a lot of interest in extended feature set (EFS) with the aim of narrowing down the gap between the performance of AFIS and latent examiners. Level 3 features constitute the most significant subset of extended features. Studies on level 3 features have reported significant improvement in the fingerprint recognition accuracy. However, these studies were based either on live-scan fingerprints or full (rolled or slap) fingerprints. As a result, the conclusions of these studies cannot be extended to latent fingerprints, which are characterized by small size, poor image quality, and severe distortion compared to full fingerprints. In this paper, we study the utility of level 3 features, including pores, dots, incipient ridges, and ridge edge protrusions, for latent matching. Automatic algorithms for extracting and matching these features are proposed. While most existing level 3 feature matching algorithms only consider the locations of features, the proposed method utilizes the topological relationship between level 3 and level 2 features, and is thus robust to nonlinear distortion and has high discriminative capability. Given the proposed algorithms and operational latent fingerprint databases, we identify the challenges in using level 3 features, and show the potential of level 3 features in improving latent matching accuracy. Further, by using simulated partial fingerprints, we highlight that level 3 features can indeed improve latent matching accuracy when i) level 3 features can be reliably extracted in both latent and full fingerprints and ii) latent fingerprints have only a small number of minutiae or the minutiae match scores are low. With the increasing adoption of 1000ppi fingerprint scanners in law enforcement agencies, it is becoming feasible and desirable to incorporate level 3 features into AFIS. We believe that the proposed algorithms and analysis will be useful in the design and development of next generation AFIS.

Abstract:Level 3 characteristics are increasingly important for fingerprint identification, particularly when the fingerprints are problematic and lack level 2 details. In practice, no reliable visualization methods for level 3 features are transferred into a course for the general public, forensic students, or investigators. Our group has reported the membrane/water technique and wet-membrane method as simple, instantaneous, high-resolution, and reproducible methods for visualizing level 3 features of latent fingerprints (LFPs). Herein, we designed a simple-to-operate laboratory course on sweat pore visualization and analysis via the two methods mentioned. Three modules are included, and students participate in different modular combinations according to their interests and specialties. Module 1, consisting of a 15 min lecture on fingerprint theory followed by a brief demonstration of visualization procedures, is designed for broad audiences ranging from primary school to college laboratories. In module 2, students explored the deposition force impact on level 3 features (for students majoring in forensic science). Module 3 customized for forensic upper-division undergraduates and postgraduates invites them to conduct Gaussian fitting of the pore area and adjacent pore distance. After discussion, students form their own opinions on the identifiable strengths of the above parameters in fingerprint matching. In a way, this experiment can be evolved into the elective course and specialized curriculum, where elective course containing module 1 can stimulate public interest in chemistry and specialized curriculum including modules 1–2 (or modules 1–3) may guide students to extract level 3 features and understand the role of level 3 features at a quantitative level.

Abstract:This review presents an overview on the application of latent fingerprint development techniques in forensic sciences. At present, traditional developing methods such as powder dusting, cyanoacrylate fuming, chemical method, and small particle reagent method, have all been gradually compromised given their emerging drawbacks such as low contrast, sensitivity, and selectivity, as well as high toxicity. Recently, much attention has been paid to the use of fluorescent nanomaterials including quantum dots (QDs) and rare earth upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials (UCNMs) due to their unique optical and chemical properties. Thus, this review lays emphasis on latent fingerprint development based on QDs and UCNMs. Compared to latent fingerprint development by traditional methods, the new methods using fluorescent nanomaterials can achieve high contrast, sensitivity, and selectivity while showing reduced toxicity. Overall, this review provides a systematic overview on such methods.

Abstract:Fingerprints are the best form of personal identification for criminal investigation purposes. We present a line-scanning Raman imaging system and use it to detect fingerprints composed of β-carotene and fish oil on different substrates. Although the line-scanning Raman system has been used to map the distribution of materials such as polystyrene spheres and minerals within geological samples, this is the first time to our knowledge that the method is used in imaging fingerprints. Two Raman peaks of β-carotene (501.2, 510.3 nm) are detected and the results demonstrate that both peaks can generate excellent images with little difference between them. The system operates at a spectra resolution of about 0.4 nm and can detect β-carotene signals in petroleum ether solution with the limit of detection of 3.4×10(-9) mol/L. The results show that the line-scanning Raman imaging spectroscopy we have built has a high accuracy and can be used in the detection of latent fingerprints in the future.

Abstract:Fingerprints have long been and are still considered to be the gold standard for personal identification in forensic investigations. Developing or enhancing the visualization of invisible fingerprints, so-called latent fingerprints (LFPs), remains to be the core subject in forensic science. Moreover, the past few years have witnessed a renewal of research interest in the possibility that a fingerprint can provide additional information than just identification of individuals, such as personal traits, the presence of human metabolites with diagnostic values, and the evidence of contact with explosives or illicit drugs. Fingerprint analysis has manifested itself as a research area far beyond the scope of forensics, to which not only conventional fingerprint examiners but also researchers from chemistry, biochemistry, medical science, material science, and nanotechnology fields have made significant contributions in recent years. Beginning with a brief overview of the components present in LFP residue that essentially determines which method or reagent will give the best visualization result, this paper reviews the progress since 2007 on new reagents and methods developed for LFP visualization and simultaneous detection of specific chemicals present in the LFP residue, with an emphasis on the utilization of mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, nanoparticles, and immunogenic and nucleic acid reagents.
Visualization of Latent Fingermarks by Enhanced Chemiluminescence Immunoassay and Pattern Recognition

Abstract:Herein we report the combination of enzyme-linked immunoassay and pattern recognition analysis for extracting both chemical and spatial information from latent fingermarks (LFMs). The development approach basically involves two steps, namely, specific recognition of protein and polypeptide secretions present in the ridge residues of LFMs by horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled antibodies and the HRP-catalyzed chemiluminescent (CL) reaction between luminol and H2O2. The emitted light can spatially resolve the ridges, generating a bright image against the dark object surface for visualization of an LFM. Meanwhile, thanks to the molecular specificity of the immunoassay step, the emission also provides us additional information on the existence of specific substances in LFMs. The developed LFMs are further processed by a set of digital image processing procedures. Quantitative analysis based on minutia features shows that even poorly developed fingermarks can be matched successfully. This work offers the promise of facilitating cross-disciplinary studies between data-processing approaches and fingermark development techniques, such as the extraction of more information from LFM evidence, as well as the establishment of evaluation criteria for an enhancement technique.

Abstract:There is a high demand on a simple, rapid, accurate, user-friendly, cost-effective, and nondestructive universal method for latent fingerprint (LFP) detection. Herein, we describe a combination imaging strategy for LFP visualization with high resolution using poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride)-b-polystyrene (PSMA-b-PS) functionalized gold nanoparticles (GNPs). This general approach integrates the merits of both colorimetric imaging and photoacoustic imaging. In comparison with the previous methods, our strategy is single-step and does not require the signal amplification by silver staining. The PSMA-b-PS functionalized GNPs have good stability, tunable color, and high affinity for universal secretions (proteins/polypeptides/amino acids), which makes our approach general and flexible for visualizing LFPs on different substrates (presumably with different colors) and from different people. Moreover, the unique optical property of GNPs enables the photoacoustic imaging of GNPs-deposited LFPs with high resolution. This allows observation of level 3 hyperfine features of LFPs such as the pores and ridge contours by photoacoustic imaging. This technique can potentially be used to identify chemicals within LFP residues. We believe that this dual-modality imaging of LFPs will find widespread use in forensic investigations and medical diagnostics.

Abstract:Although fingerprints have been widely used in forensic investigations, low resolution and poor universality are still the main obstacles for the development of fingerprint visualization. In this paper, a facile and universal imaging protocol for latent fingerprints (LFPs) was developed by combining sandwiched SERS probes with the highly sensitive and selective recognition of aptamers. The embedded SERS probes (Au/pNTP/SiO2) successfully avoid the environment interference, ascertaining the stability and reproducibility of Raman signals, and simultaneously improve the efficiency of the fingerprint identification. This approach is operationally simple without complicated pre- or post-treatments. Moreover, the fingerprint images display the high resolution in which third-level details can be clearly identified. This is a general approach and can be used to detect various types of fingerprints, including sebaceous, eccrine, fresh LFPs, and aged LFPs on different substrates (such as smooth, scratching, semiporous, and porous surfaces).
Detection and Segmentation of Latent Fingerprints

Abstract:Latent fingerprints have been used by law enforcement agencies to identify suspects for a century. However, because of poor image quality and complex background noise, latent fingerprints are routinely identified relying on features manually marked by human experts in practice. A large number of latent fingerprints can not be treated in time due to lacking well trained experts, highlighting the need for "lights out" (fully-automatic) systems. In this paper, we propose a systematic algorithm for latent fingerprint detection, segmentation, and orientation field estimation, without any manual markup. Multiple potential latent fingerprints are detected using a sequential pose estimation algorithm. Then, the full orientation field and confidence map of each detected fingerprint are estimated based on localized dictionaries lookup. Finally, the boundary of each latent fingerprint is delineated by analyzing its confidence map. Experiments on a multi-latent fingerprint database and the challenging NIST SD27 latent fingerprint database show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The development of latent fingerprints on long-circulated RMB banknotes has been one of the challenging task in forensic science research. In this work, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) was used to perform chemical imaging of latent fingerprints on the surface of the substrate due to its advantages such as in-situ, quasi-nondestructive, high-throughput, simultaneous analysis of multi-components and high spatial resolution. The developing effect of TOF-SIMS was firstly compared with that of several traditional methods, and the reasons for the unique advantages of TOF-SIMS were discussed. Its applicability was further discussed from the perspective of universality, sensitivity and fingerprint three-level feature acquisition capability. Finally, exogenous substances in fingerprints were also analyzed by using this technology to detect the molecular ions (m/z 92.06) and fragment ion peaks (m/z 43.02) of glycerol in the moisture lotion and developed clear fingerprint images. Preliminary research results showed that TOF-SIMS technology could provide an effective method for the development of latent fingerprints on long-circulated RMB banknotes and was expected to be used for the detection of substances in fingerprints on the surface of various substrates.

Abstract:Fingerprints hold evidential value for individual identification; a sensitive, efficient, and convenient method for visualizing latent fingermarks (LFMs) is of great importance in the field of crime scene investigation. In this study, we proposed an aggregation‐induced emission atomization technique (AIE‐AT) to obtain high‐quality fingermark images. Six volunteers made over 1566 fingerprint samples on 17 different objects. The quality of fingermark development was evaluated using grayscale analysis for quantitative assessment, combining the fluency of fingermark ridges and the degree of level 2 and level 3 features. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed to explore the effectiveness of AIE molecule C27H19N3SO in developing fingermarks, its applicability to objects, and its individual selectivity. Additionally, the stability of the AIE molecule was examined. Comparative experimental results demonstrated the high stability of the AIE molecule, making it suitable for long‐term preservation. The grayscale ratio of the ridges and furrows was at least 2, with high brightness contrast, the level 2 and level 3 features were clearly observable. The AIE‐AT proved to be effective for developing fingermarks on nonporous, porous, and semiporous objects. It exhibited low selectivity on suspects who leave fingermarks and showed better development effects on challenging objects, as well as efficient extraction capability for in situ fingermarks. In summary, AIE‐AT can efficiently develop latent fingermarks on common objects and even challenging ones. It locates the latent fingermarks for further accurate extraction of touch exfoliated cells in situ, providing technical support for the visualization of fingermarks and the localization for extraction of touch DNA.

Abstract:Identification of endogenous and exogenous chemicals contained in latent fingerprints is important for forensic science in order to acquire evidence of criminal identities and contacts with specific chemicals. Mass spectrometry has emerged as a powerful technique for such applications without any derivatization or fluorescent tags. Among these techniques, MALDI (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization) provides small beam size but has interferences with MALDI matrix materials, which cause ion suppressions as well as limited spatial resolution resulting from uneven distribution of MALDI matrix crystals with different sizes. LAET (Laser Activated Electron Tunneling) described in this work offers capabilities for chemical imaging through electron-directed soft ionization. A special film of semiconductors has been designed for collection of fingerprints. Nanoparticles of bismuth cobalt zinc oxide were compressed on a conductive metal substrate (Al or Cu sticky tape) under 10 MPa pressure. Resultant uniform thin films provide tight and shining surfaces on which fingers are impressed. Irradiation of ultraviolet laser pulses (355 nm) on the thin film instantly generates photoelectrons that can be captured by adsorbed organic molecules and subsequently cause electron-directed ionization and fragmentation. Imaging of latent fingerprints is achieved by visualization of the spatial distribution of these molecular ions and structural information-rich fragment ions. Atomic electron emission together with finely tuned laser beam size improve spatial resolution. With the LAET technique, imaging analysis not only can identify physical shapes but also reveal endogenous metabolites present in females and males, detect contacts with prohibited substances, and resolve overlapped latent fingerprints.
Colorimetric visualization and SECM imaging of latent fingerprints on food surfaces

Abstract:Fingerprints have long been and are still considered to be an important evidence for personal identification in forensic investigations. Food surfaces are commonly encountered at crime scenes, so it is vital to visualize the latent fingerprints deposited on them (LFPs/food). In this work, nitrocellulose (NC) membrane and fruit juice were used to lift and enhance LFPs/food, respectively. First of all, different fruit juices were chosen to develop the LFPs left directly on the NC membrane (direct-LFPs/NC). A high-resolution pattern of the developed fingerprint could appear just in a few seconds with only one step. Furthermore, the LFPs lifted by NC membranes from different food surfaces (lifted-LFPs/food-NC) were developed with pitaya juice to demonstrate the generality of this method. The physical colorimetric images show that this method is well suitable for both the direct-LFPs/NC and the lifted-LFPs/food-NC, which can provide high-resolution level 2 and level 3 features. Moreover, juice-developed LFPs/NC could further be electrochemically imaged by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) with even higher spatial resolution. The dual physical and electrochemical images of LFPs/food have been successfully achieved, which can complement each other to get more accurate fingerprint information. As it is simple, fast, general, safe, cheap, convenient, and sensitive, the developed methodology demonstrates great potential in personal identification related fields.

Latent Fingerprint Matching: Fusion of Manually Marked and Derived Minutiae

Abstract:Matching unknown latent fingerprints lifted from crime scenes to full (rolled or plain) fingerprints in law enforcement databases is of critical importance for combating crime and fighting terrorism. Compared to good quality full fingerprints acquired using live-scan or inking methods during enrollment, latent fingerprints are often smudgy and blurred, capture only a small finger area, and have large nonlinear distortion. For this reason, features (minutiae and singular points) in latents are typically manually marked by trained latent examiners. However, this introduces an undesired interoperability problem between latent examiners and automatic fingerprint identification systems (AFIS); the features marked by examiners are not always compatible with those automatically extracted by AFIS, resulting in reduced matching accuracy. While the use of automatically extracted minutiae from latents can avoid interoperability problem, such minutiae tend to be very unreliable, because of the poor quality of latents. In this paper, we improve latent to full fingerprint matching accuracy by combining manually marked (ground truth) minutiae with automatically extracted minutiae. Experimental results on a public domain database, NIST SD27, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Fingerprints have been used as an indispensable tool for personal identification in forensic investigations since the late 19th century. At present, fingerprinting technology has moved away from its forensic roots and is incorporating a broader scientific range, e.g., material science, spectroscopy and spectral analysis, and even in vitro diagnosis. After a brief introduction to latent fingerprints, this mini-review presents the pioneering progresses of fingerprinting technologies including (i) material and electrochemical techniques, and (ii) spectral and spectroscopy imaging techniques and immunological techniques capable of both the visualization of a fingerprint and the detection of chemicals present in it. Finally, perspectives on this rapidly developing field are discussed.
Development of latent fingermarks by unbalanced magnetron sputtering deposited ultra-thin metal film

Abstract:Thin metal films with thickness above 50 nm have been successful used for developing level 1 features of latent fingermarks. In order to easily show the level 2 and level 3 features of the fingermarks, thinner films are needed to be fabricated. Three kinds of metal films including cooper, chromium and aluminum with film thickness ranging from 5 nm∼30 nm were deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The efficacy of film thickness and metal type on developing latent fingermark was investigated. The most clearly developed fingermark was obtained by films with thickness of 10–20nm. Cooper films exhibit better effects on showing Level 2 features than chromium and aluminum films with the same thickness. The optical contrast of fingermark ridges and valleys was influenced by the morphology difference of film deposited on ridge and valley areas, which were related to shadowing effect affected by film thickness and metal type determined re-emission effect.

Abstract:Latent fingerprints are acquired from crime places which are utilised to distinguish suspects in crime inspection. In general, latent fingerprints contain mysterious ridge and valley structure with nonlinear distortion and complex background noise. These lead to fundamentally difficult problem for further analysis. Hence, the image quality is required for matching those latent fingerprints. In this work, we develop a model, which needs manually marked region of interest latent fingerprints for enhancement and matching. The proposed model includes two phases: i) latent fingerprints contrast enhancement using intuitionistic fuzzy set; ii) extract the level 2 feature (minutiae) from the latent fingerprint image. This technique is functioned depend on minutia points which investigate n number of images and the Euclidean distance is applied for calculate the matching scores. We tested our algorithm for matching, using some public domain fingerprint databases such as fingerprint verification competition-2004 and Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology-latent fingerprint, which indicates that by fusing the proposed enhancement algorithm, the matching precision has fundamentally, moved forward.
On Matching Latent Fingerprints

Abstract:Latent fingerprint identification is of critical importance to law enforcement agencies in forensics application. While tremendous progress has been made in the field of automatic fingerprint matching, latent fingerprint matching continues to be a difficult problem because the challenges involved in latent print matching are quite different from plain or rolled fingerprint matching. Poor quality of friction ridge impressions, small finger area and large non-linear distortion are some of the main difficulties in latent fingerprint matching. We propose a system for matching latent images to rolled fingerprints that takes into account the specific characteristics of the latent matching problem. In addition to minutiae, additional features like orientation field and quality map are also used in our system. Experimental results on the NIST SD27 latent database indicate that the introduction of orientation field and quality map to minutiae-based matching leads to good recognition performance despite the inherently difficult nature of the problem. We achieve the rank-20 accuracy of 93.4% in retrieving 258 latents from a background database of 2,258 rolled fingerprints.
TOF-SIMS study of latent fingerprints on challenging substrates with the aid of transfer films.

Abstract:Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) has been applied in forensic science for fingerprint detection. However, due to limitations of the instrument, it is not always possible to directly sample fingerprints on certain substrates. In this report, we indirectly sampled fingerprints using transfer films. First, we optimized the experimental conditions and identified transfer films with better results. We then explored the feasibility of revealing fingerprints after transfer and successfully transferred and revealed the detailed features of fingerprints on several common objects that could not be directly sampled. Fingerprints transferred from smooth surfaces yield clearer feature details in ion images. Additionally, we analyzed the substances in the transferred fingerprints and detected components of morphine and MDMA(3,4-methylenedioxy--methylamphetamine). By combining feature details with identified chemical components, the identity of a person can be determined, linking suspects to the crime scene. This work provides a new approach for sample introduction in instrumental analysis, enabling TOF-SIMS to be applied in more scenarios.
